Video Transcript for Checking Out the Demco 12 Volt Outlet Kit

Hi there, do-it-yourselfers. Today we're gonna be taking a look at Demco's 12 volt outlet kit. Demco's 12 volt outlet kit is gonna give you everything that you're gonna need to be able to hook up a 12 volt outlet in your vehicle, and you have the options to wire it however you like, whether you want this outlet to be powered all the time or only powered on under certain conditions, like when the key is in the accessory or run position. Oftentimes, these are used for other accessory components. In this instance, we're using it for a flat tow setup so we can power our supplemental braking system but it could be used for other items as well, potentially for monitor light systems. It could be used in flat tows for that to power up things in a vehicle behind you.

Maybe you're just wanting to use it for other accessories. Maybe you have like a GPS or something that you're wanting to use and you don't have enough outlets to power it. You could add an additional one in. So there are a lot of options for where this could be utilized for various different applications. So we just saw the outlet on the inside.

Here on the outside, you can see the wiring. It's nice, thick, I believe that's 12 gauge wire. So it is very heavy duty, easily capable of carrying the 20 amps that the outlet is rated for. So I really like the wiring. I like that it's this nice duplex sheathed wiring that's gonna help protect it and ensure that it lasts a long time.

So it comes with some fantastic wiring. You get your butt connectors and ring terminals as well as a fuse harness so you've got proper fuse protection. One of the things I did wanna point out though, while it does come with everything you need to get it installed, there are a couple of things that I would recommend. First off, the butt connector that you see here is not actually the one that comes in the kit, that is one that we replaced it with. This is the one that comes in the kit and this will work but the problem with this type of butt connector is that it doesn't have any sealing properties.

Once you get this on the wire, water and other moisture could enter in on the ends and cause corrosion on your circuit. So I would recommend replacing that with a heat-shrink butt connector. That way it seals up the ends, protecting your wiring from the various elements. Another thing that I also recommend picking up is some cable ties, 'cause it doesn't come with any cable ties and routing your wiring to help make it nice and neat you're gonna wanna likely put a few of those in place to hold your wiring. But other than that, I really like this kit. We've been installing the RoadMaster 12 outlet volt kit for a long time and that is a fine kit as well, but there are a few things that I dislike about that kit. I don't like the mounting bracket that holds the outlet. The Demco one here seems much, much more firm in its holding of the connector. I don't really personally like the actual outlet that comes in the RoadMaster, 'cause there's no cover. It's just kind of exposed. And I don't like the way it fits again in the bracket. This one's got a nice cover to plug it up so that way you can prevent anything from falling down in it. Now we've got ours mounted upside down so nothing's gonna fall in there. But depending on the orientation you put it in, a penny or anything like that could fall in there and short it out. So having a cover when you're not using it is pretty nice depending on that orientation. And lastly, the thing that I really like about this kit over the RoadMaster, for me it's probably the selling point, is the fuse harness that it comes with. The RoadMaster has one that's built in line with it so you don't have to add it like this one here. Takes a little more work, but you do get all the parts you need with this kit. But this is a more traditional style of fuse, uses your just traditional ATX style fuses versus the RoadMaster's gonna use kind of the old school glass tube fuses which are becoming more and more difficult to obtain. And they're harder to read to make sure you've got the right amperage value, and stuff like that. So I highly recommend this one over the other one. Again, the RoadMaster kit, we've used it a lot. It does function fine, but after putting this one on this is I think the one I'm gonna be recommending from here on forward. And that completes our look at Demco's 12 volt outlet kit..

Exactly what I ordered. The only thing I didn't use was the metal trailer plug holder since I went with the wireless version for my new truck.

Looks well made. Ended up not needing it. Will go in a drawer as not worth the cost and effort of shipping it back from Canada.

Works well. Mounted underside of t.t. cabinet Runs my 500W inverter to power the TV and bd player. Well made socket , I do recommend holding onto the housing when you or pull out the plug. The wiring patched into the existing trailer wiring.

  • Is The Demco LED Light Bar For Towed Vehcles DOT Approved And Legal For Use
Hi Chris, Yes, the Demco LED Light Bar for Towed Vehicles w/ Wireless Transmitter # DM36MV is approved and legal for flat towing your vehicle. It's designed to attach to the rear window with a suction cup and face rearward so that others on the road can clearly see your light signals. There could be separate laws depending on the area you're traveling through so you'll need to check with those municipalities but you really shouldn't have an issue unless your rear window is dirty and not...

  • Is It Possible To Power a Cooler Off a 4-Way Trailer Connector?
The only adapter we will have with a 12-volt connector for your cooler is the Hopkins Multi-Tow Trailer Connector Adapter # HM47675 that connects to a 7-way connector. There is not a connector that connects to a 4-way since the 4-way is powered by the tail lights on your vehicle. This wiring is not capable of carrying the power for your cooler and the only time the wiring has power is when lights are being used. You can run a dedicated 12 Volt Outlet Kit # DM83FR to the rear of your vehicle...

  • Can the Demco LED Light Bar Be Connected to a Splitter
Hey Steve, so in regards to your first question I don't see anything wrong with using a splitter and an extension cord with the Demco LED Light Bar for Towed Vehicles w/ Wireless Transmitter # DM36MV as long as it's getting 12V, and your cords are protected, it doesn't matter. For your second question, there is not really a way to tell but since your Jeep does not have to have it's battery disconnected to flat tow, you shouldn't end up with a dead battery. If it turns out you need to...
