Video Transcript for Breaking Down the Hopkins 12-Volt Power Socket with Power Wire and Fuse Assembly

Today we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Hopkins 12-volt power socket with power wire and fuse assembly. Part number is HM5515. Now this can easily be mounted anywhere we need a 12-volt power source. It's great for emergency use, camping or tailgating, but a lot of our customers like to use it as a power source for their supplemental braking system. That's the application we're going to be showing you today, but it installs the same regardless of what you're using it for. This is what our kit's going to look like when we get it out of the package. Here's what we're after: a 12-volt power supply.

This is going to be connected directly to our battery. Whether your ignition causes all the outlets in your vehicle to turn off, or whether you're adding this to a different application, whatever the case may be, this is going to give us constant power. Got a nice dust cover there that's going to prevent things from getting in there. We've got a surface-mount setup here, so we've got a piece of foam tape on the back that's going to help mount it to our surface. We've also got an area on each side where we can put in just a small self-tapping screw to give us a little extra security. The red wire is going to go out to our power source, which is going to be our battery.

The white wire we're going to ground somewhere underneath our dashboard. Now the first thing we need to take care of for our installation is getting our 17-foot length of power wire from inside of the vehicle outside of the vehicle. We're going to be mounting our outlet right here so it's convenient and easy to get to. If we go straight back from there, we've got a grommet on the firewall. Let's use that grommet to pass our wiring through.

We're just going to make a very small slit in the grommet. That should give us plenty of room. Now I'm using just a piece of airline tubing here but you can also use a coat hanger or a stiff piece of wire. Now I'm just going to use some electrical tape here and tape my wire right off to my pull wire or my airline tubing, whatever you're using. Now we're going to leave a little bit of extra wire here on the inside, but we're going to snip off what we don't need. We'll strip the end of that back.

You can see we've already got a butt connector on the end of our outlet there, so we'll just have to stick it in there. Then we can get it crimped down. Now to attach my ground wire I'm going to go to the stud that's located right here. This is the bracket for the emergency brake cable. There's a stud that goes right into the firewall right there. Want to remove that nut. We're going to place the ring terminal right on that stud and replace our flange nut. Now we're going to mount right up here. Got a nice area with nothing located behind it so we don't have to worry about anything we might drill into. We'll pull cover off of that adhesive, get it up in place nice and level. You can see I ran my wires out of the top there. That's going to make it a little bit easier to get everything tucked away. We're just going to use a couple of self-tapping screws that have a round head so they'll fit in properly here. Now we just grab a couple of zip ties and bunch up any excess wire that we might have here. Just make a nice little bunch. This is going to give us excess wire in case we ever need to make any changes or any repairs. Then we'll zip tie it off right up here to a factory wire loom. Now we're just going to route our power wire just down and out of the way. We'll bring it right over here. We're going to be going to the positive side of the battery. Just use a little zip tie there, get it held in place. Anywhere else you think you can get one in to help just keep the wire from moving around is a great plan. Now on our fuse holder here, see we've got our fuse in place. We want to get that out of there, set it aside for now. We'll replace it in just a minute. Since we're making a connection here on the outside of the vehicle, I like to get rid of the standard butt connectors. I'm going to strip that back and what I'm going to add is . this is a heat-shrink butt connector. This is going to provide us with superior moisture protection in the event that water we're to get up in here and stuff like that, we won't have to worry about any corrosion. We'll cut off just a little bit extra. That way, if we ever need to change it or make any repairs, we'll have some extra wire to do so. Get that other side stripped off there. That's going to go right into our fuse holder. Give it a good pull, make sure it's solidly connected. Then we can just use a heat source. I'm using a lighter. You can also use a heat gun. You could use a little mini-torch, whatever you've got handy. You'll see how that shrinks down. There's actually a little bit of gel that comes out of that end. That acts as a sealant or as a glue to keep our connection free of any moisture that might want to try to get in there. Now we'll pop the cover off our battery. You see we've got a little open hole right here. Some of them will have a stud that's already in place. This one doesn't, so what I'm going to do is just use a small screw, place that on, place my screw down through. Then on the other side I'm going to thread on my nut. That's nice and secure. Pop that cover down closed and now our excess wiring. We'll tuck that right underneath and we'll use a zip tie to secure it. Let's take our fuse here, slide it in place. Then we'll go in and test that outlet and make sure it's working. Now to test it out we just want to pop our cap off. I'm going to use just a charging port. It's got a light on it. If we've got 12-volt power, we'll have a green light come on. Working as it should. That's what we're looking for. That's going to complete our look at the Hopkins 12-volt power socket with power wire and fuse assembly, part number HM55115.

This outlet is working great. I installed it on the outside of trailer by the rear bumper to power a 12 volt macerator pump. This enables me to empty black and gray water tanks into sink drain at home. Puts 12 volt power outlet where it is needed, with quick safe weather tight connect/disconnect.

12Volt External macerator pump I use at home to empty black and gray tanks makes travel trailer cleanup much easier. I put the 12V outlet location near the tank outlet for quick set up and drain. The outlet has worked well, no issues. Sure beats running long wires to battery located at other end of trailer.

I would not recommend this product. Didn't last two months. Door fell off. Adhesive didn't stick. Wire came off of internal connection. The wire coming off was the last straw. Trashed it and went with a different brand. Zero issues with the new plug....

Didn't last two months. Door fell off. Adhesive never really stuck. Wire came off of the internal connector. The wire coming off was the last straw. Trashed it and went with a different brand which has held up with no issues.

Installed this item in the back of my pick-up truck mainly to power a refrigerator for a road trip, but have also used it a few times to charge cell phones for overnight camping trips. So far the unit has work flawlessly and the installation was relatively easy, even though the wiring harness was a little too short for my purposes, so I had to splice it to make the full run.

Just what I needed, it is well made and will work great with my supplement braking system I use when pulling my jeep with the RV. As always E trailer sent it quick, and knew what I needed.

Still working great and looks like it just came out of the box.

Used this to add a 12 volt power outlet for my RVi Tow Brake System in the overhead console of my Winnebago View for the remote monitor. I have a 2016 Winnebago View and there was no good place to put the RVi plug in monitor on the dash console. This worked great!

by:

Put this on dash panel of our Sprinter 3500 frame class A RV for a plug-in on our new wireless towing device sync box to vehicle brake box. Easy to install on dash could set power socket were I could see information on wireless box and plenty of wire and fuse link to be able to hook up direct to RV batteries not the main vehicle battery.

Got it in the mail this afternoon. I will get to installing later. The foam on the bottom had to be cut so the wires would fit flat and allow the unit to mount to the truck bed. Will start installation when it quits raining.
For a more speedy review the request could have been made the day before it was delivered!!

by:

easy to install with included wire in k it.

The power socket arrived quickly and came packaged as advertised, installed easily in our camper. A simple product that will add much convenience to our camping. Just installed so we don't know the long term reliability of this product yet.

the main product was excellent...extra wire was too small a gauge for a 12 volt socket but was solved by Mark at etrailer....thanks..Mark

  • Troubleshooting A 12v Outlet That's Melting When Charging An Igloo Iceless Cooler
Resistance causes heat build up so it's within reason that the while the body of male plug is super tight in the outlet the contact on it isn't making a good connection with the contact in the female socket, causing the burn out. Have you tried using anything else with a similar connector to see if it's just the cooler or if it's the outlet itself having the issue? It also wouldn't hurt to use a clamp meter and check the actually amp draw. The manufacturer lists it at 4.65 amps too but...

The best option I have to install a 12 volt power outlet in a truck bed would be to use the Hopkins 12-Volt Power Socket with Power Wire and Fuse Assembly part # HM55115 and wire this directly to the battery.
