Secure, Interlocking Two-Piece Jaw

A16 Two-Piece Interlocking Jaw

Unlike slide-bar models, the rounded, interlocking, two-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

Three-Point Indicator System

A16 Color Indicator System

Get peace of mind with Curt's color-coded lock indicator. Just look at the indicator - either the one on the handle or the one on the hitch itself - to determine whether the jaw is in the correct position to uncouple (red), couple (yellow) or tow (green).

R16 Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' and 6-1/2' beds, this roller helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a roller to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Non-Binding Design

The round-tube design of this slider allows for relatively uninhibited movement of your fifth-wheel hitch. Because your hitch can glide smoothly and easily along the rods, there is less chance of binding.

With straight, flat contact points, as found with square-tube sliders, tension can build between the slider and the hitch when your truck and trailer are somewhat out of line or are on uneven ground. As a result, it can be difficult to properly activate the slider when your truck and trailer are not in a straight line.

With a round-tube slider, there is more give between the contacting surfaces, allowing better mobility of the hitch system. Fewer corners means less tension buildup. Activating a round-tube slider is easier, and operation as a whole is smoother.

Curt rebranded this fifth-wheel trailer hitch by changing its name from Q16 to A16 in 2016. All features and specifications remained the same.

Video Transcript for An In-Depth Look at the Replacement Head Unit for Curt A16 and Q16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches

Hi everyone, Aidan here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at this replacement fifth wheel head for your A16 or your Q16 fifth wheel hitches from Curt. So if you're getting this as a replacement head it's gonna function just like your old one. You can see right away It's got the same torsion system that's acting as a sort of cushioning system. When we're hooked up to our trailer it's gonna help us create a smoother ride going down the road with that side to side, front to back and even on the diagonal movement, all absorbing that shock but also helping us with the hookup process by moving and meeting the kingpin as we're guiding it back. The dual jaw system here, they overlap with each other to create really solid contact on the kingpin 360 degrees around.

And if we move over to the side here those jaws can be controlled by the handle secured in place by a pin and clip that can be swapped out for a padlock if you want that security aspect, pulling the handle out and back, we'll open up those jaws or in the coupling mode I've got a dummy king pin here that will slide back in. The open flare here will guide it into position and then as it backs up, we're hooking up to our trailer. The handle will snap back into place fully locked in and we can just resecure it with our pin and clip. Now a good way to know if we're fully coupled is the indicator on the back. You can see it's green right now which means we're positively coupled and good to go.

But if I undo that handle here, partially you'll see it switched to that red and in the fully open position it'll switch to yellow letting us know we're ready to back up to our trailer. And then as we back up that kingpin slides in, it'll swing past that red and when it's fully latched in, go back to green. With the positioning of this, it's easy to see from the cab of the truck so you don't have to get out to check on it. You can just look back there and see if you've got a good couple. With the fifth wheel head here we are gonna have a weight capacity.

It can handle 16,000 pounds of gross trailer weight rating. That's how much weight it can pull and has a vertical load limit, that downward pressure of 4,000 pounds. Be sure to check whether it be the leg kit, the slider base or your truck and go by the lowest rating component in the system but know that that's what the fifth wheel head can handle. You've got your three different points of height adjustment on the side. Again, depending on whether you're using the slider base like we are today or the just regular legs that are fixed, that height may change but you do have three different options for the adjustment.

What I can tell you though is that the whole spacing is 2" apart for each interval of that height adjustment. So just take that into account whenever you're setting this up for your truck and trailer combination. The whole fifth wheel head is gonna be a steel construction with a carbide black powder coat finish over top of it to help it resist rust and corrosion over time. Now with any sort of finished scratches and scuffs can be a danger to it because if you scratch away the finish it's way more susceptible to rust and corrosion over time. It does come included though with a lube plate which will sit between the head of the fifth wheel and your pin box with the kingpin right in the center here and reduce that metal on metal contact to make sure that the finish hopefully lasts a lot longer, keeping your whole fifth wheel looking like new. Speaking of keeping things operating like new you do have two zerk fittings on that dual jaw design here. So you can apply grease regularly to keep them operating smoothly. If you don't wanna leave this in your truck bed full-time and you want to take it out, it can be pretty heavy but you can separate the head into two pieces by taking out that first pin and clip and this large pin that runs through the center of the fifth wheel head. And that will allow us to actually separate the head from the body of the fifth wheel here. So it makes everything a lot lighter and easier to get in and out. And with it out you can see the rubber isolators that are located inside. That's part of the torsion system that we're talking about earlier. And what helps cushion the whole movement here and keep everything operating nice and smoothly as well as reducing noise. Being able to break it down really helps with the installation process because you can do it all on your own relatively easily. So let's go ahead and walk through that process with you now. Now since this is a replacement head you could be replacing it on a standard fifth wheel rather than this slider kit that we're doing this with in which case you'll be needing to use the hardware that came with your fifth wheel originally that bolt, lock washer and flat washer that threads into the legs on your A16 hitch. With that being said, if you are missing these, you will need to get new hardware because the hardware that comes with the replacement head is going to be that bolt and nut. Getting this installed, it might be a little easier to have a second set of hands, but if you can grab it by the center and get one of your bolts started just to help hold it in place on either end, that would be ideal and then we can get the nuts installed later after repeating this on both sides. Now at this point you wanna take your wrench and socket and actually start to tighten these down in all four corners and then we can torque it to the specifications found in our instructions. For the torque wrench, it's pretty easy to rent these out or borrow them but if you wanna get your own you can find those here at etrailer. Just make sure to find the proper torque spec and your instructions and repeat that for the other three bolts. With everything torqued down we can take the head unit and drop it down into place, securing it with the large pin going in through the back of the whole assembly and securing out front with our smaller pin and retaining clip. And that's really all there is to it for the installation process, it's gonna be a very basic easy to use replacement for your A16 or your Q16 fifth wheel hitches. Just deep in mind that if you're replacing one with the standard legs that you do have the appropriate hardware either reusing the old one or getting new hardware. And if you're gonna be dropping it in place in a situation like this with the S20 slider, know that the hardware it comes with is gonna be exactly what you need. But that'll do it for our look at this replacement fifth wheel head for your A16 or your Q16 hitches from Curt. Thanks for watching.

Love the hitch, slider's OK, my truck hates them though. It'd probably be fine in a different vehicle but The "acceptable play" in the slider mechanism is at a resonance to my truck and camper creating a vicious front-back oscillation hitting rough surfaces. After addressing several other issues and the problem persists. Finally, I 3D Printed bushings to eliminate the play which almost completely eliminates the oscillation. On the bright side, Curt and etrailer are working with me on it.

1st off, customer service was Awesome, the ladies Ashley & Kim knew what they were talking about when helping me order my hitch.
Installation was fairly easy, would help if you had a 2nd person but I got it done.
The 1 thing that might be an issue is the height of the hitch when added with the height of the mount. I am hoping the new trailers kingpin will adjust low enough so the trailer rides level.
For the hitch itself, I like it so far, can't wait to see how the full wrap around jaws works.
I would recommend etrailer to anyone that needs a hitch.
Gave ot 4 stars only for the fact I have not pulled with it yet.

The Curt A16 5th wheel w/ R16 slider is a great looking hitch. I received the hitch on May 11, 2023, replacing an older Reese 15K hitch with a slider lock bar. It was easy to finish the assembly and install. I immediately took my fifth wheel out, using the new hitch with the dual jaw locking system. The ride was amazing. The RV, which weighs approximately 10,000 pounds, loaded, did not buck or rattle, and responded perfectly to the turns, acceleration and deceleration with no issue. It was if there was nothing behind me.
The only issue with the Curt A16 is the height. At its lowest setting, the nose of the trailer was up too high. However, by raising the tongue of the RV to its highest setting, I was able to remedy most of that issue. I am looking forward to my trips this year with the new hitch!

So far it works great. Only pulled in a short distance and backed it up into my driveway. Make sure you have help lifting this. Very Very heavy. Directions were average but got the job done. Love the extra turning radius on my short bed F250. Make sure all the parts are there. The handle to release the king pin off the hitch was not in the packaging. The box that the hitch and slide came in were all in tacked and looked good. Emailed etrailer and within a few hours they sent were processing the order for the handle. Arrived in 2 days. That's great customer service.

The hitch works great for us pulling our 5th wheel camper.

Ram 2500/3500 fit issue. If you purchase this slider hitch and Curt OEM puck system rails (which is a package recommended on the website), this hitch will sit nearly at the same level as your bed rails at the lowest height setting. This makes the front of the 5th wheel sit quite high. I tried adjusting my pin box to make this work, but no luck. This setup won’t work for my Ram 2500. Due to restock fees and having to pay for return shipping costs, it’s not worth trying to return.

On a positive note etrailer.com is a great place to purchase truck and trailer parts, so don’t hesitate to purchase from them once you find the right hitch for your Ram.

by:

This is a solid hitch. I pulled my 34 foot 5th wheel last weekend and really liked it. I had the Pullrite auto slider before. not a fan of that hitch. One thing i did notice with this hitch on top the Ram adapter for the puck system is my RV sits up 1 1/2 to 2 inches higher. With the ISR that is lower. Other than that i love it.

by:

Have not gotten to tow yet but everything went together fairly easy. One major disappointment was the shipping and the packages were dumped in my driveway.

by:

First off I just got done installing the hitch and I hooked on my 35ft fith wheel trailer and went for a ride with windows down sun roof open and not a single rattle , clank , or noise from the bed of the truck with this hitch . It was easy to assemble but I did have one spot where the paint got chipped on the slider during shipping so I just touched it up . Very satisfied with hitch it latches automatically when you back in to it and the slider part works like it should .

by:

Upgraded from TT to fifth wheel. Once I learned the basic operation I have had mo problems with this hitch. Rides a little high because of adapter for factory puck adaptor but still fits my tonneau cover which I also bought from etrailer.

by:

Everything works very well, quality built. Only issue I had was the pins to lock the fifth wheel hitch to the spider arms. The pins were too large in diameter for the holes when I used the isolation pads. So you may need to find slightly smaller diameter pins at the hardware store, I was in a hurry and used the grinder to allow them to fit, but later found smaller pins to use.

by:

Looks like a received a returned hitch. All my hardware is missing. And still waiting on one box. The sliding rails. Starting off to a bad start.

by:

The Curt system is really high quality. No issues at all putting the system in. One thing I do like is the position of the plate handle. It does not stick upward and is even with the plate. By designing the handle that way I can still cover my bed with my tonneau cover where other manufactures the handle was higher than the bed rail. The price was excellent and dealing with customer service was the same.

by:

Great product. Easy to assemble and fits perfectly in standard bed rails on 22” center. I have coupled up with it but have not towed with it yet. Have a short trip of about 400 miles coming up in about 2 weeks. So far I am very happy with the way it couples and slides. Unlike my old square tube slider this one is very smooth and the price was right . Ordered late afternoon on Thursday and it delivered on Monday. Great shipping time. I like everything about it especially the fact that when you uncouple it is automatically set to recouple.

by:

Very happy with this hitch. Installed it myself with the installation instructions and trailer videos. Mush easier to operate than my old hitch.

by:

I am very pleased with my 5th wheel hitch.the install of the rails went well, and the assembly of the hitch itself also went well.first time towing 5th wheel no problem. I thought it was great that it was delivered promptly to my home no charge freight, that I believe saved me a lot money. I look forward to doing more towing this summer knowing the hitch is quality . Thank you for the follow up,I would recommend e trailer to anybody shopping for trailering equipment.

by:

Great hitch and great value. Our trailer is 2000lbs on the hitch and 12000lbs loaded, so not a huge rig. My favorite feature on this hitch is the locking jaw system, it makes coupling and un-coupling very smooth. The slider (when rarely used) is very smooth as well. Most of our towing is in the Colorado mountains and I feel very safe using this hitch. Lastly, I know this is just aesthetics, but it's a nice looking hitch.

by:

We love our Curt A16 5th Wheel Hitch W/r16 Slider that we purchased last year through etrailer.com. This hitch is a top quality, well-made hitch. It's very easy to hitch and unhitch. We couldn't be happier.

by:

I called etrailer.com & spoke to a representative. After telling him which truck I had & the RV I was purchasing, he made 2 suggestions. I went with the Curt sliding 5th wheel hitch. With the hitch at it's lowest setting & the kingpin box at it's highest setting, the RV continues to sit 4 inches higher in the front compared to the back. When I called etrailer.com, I was told by the rep to speak with someone higher. I left a message on his voicemail. That was 2 days ago & still no call.
Needless to say I am disappointed.

by:

This is my first fifth wheel. I have a short bed so I got the package deal with the hitch and the slider. Took me about 5 hrs to install with the custom mounting brackets and rails for my 2015 chevy 2500 HD. Everything went as the instructions said without any issues. I have only pulled my RV with it one time just to try it out. Felt very smooth no rattles or pops as I have herd with other hitches. So far I like it a lot.

by:

Great hitch used it on a few trips already driven over 3,000 miles. Love the dual jaws and the adjustability, my truck sits a bit higher and I was able to adjust this down to get it where it needed to be- even with the Reese adapter plate(see photo). The polyurethane is also a nice touch, makes the ride a little more cozy then a standard hitch. Use with the provided lube plate

by:

Could not be happier. ...shipping arriving on time as scheduled, with other options available to your needs.
Shipping boxes little tore up but
exspected as it is heavy, but product boxes undamaged along with the items..
Assembly easy with directions included, and a video to help if needed. ..or staff to call to get you through.
Had existing rails to mount into, with the side mounting right in...head assembly fit into the slide without any issues. You will have to make your height adjustments depending on your needs for your application as I did..
First pull I made from last hitch was a 100% noticeable difference. Hook up and disconect with ease without any issues.
I will HIGHLY recommend etrailer for any needs to anyone they may have or products needing.
Thanks etrailer. ..you will be hearing from me down the road if needed for any of my RV needs

I recently installed the Q16 Slider Hitch on my 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. I have used it a couple of times now pulling my 5th wheel and have had no issues with it at all. I used the slide feature twice and both times it worked very easily and had my truck and trailer at a 90 degree angle with plenty of room to spare. Great product, was delivered in a very timely manner with no issues.

by:

The product shipped and was received in a timely manner. The installation went very good, took me about 3 1/2 hours to install. Instructions were easy to understand. The installation kit came with many extra parts so I wasn't worried about missing parts. Items are very heavy so be careful lifting. The drillbit needed for the holes is 17/32 which is an uncommon bit to find at a hardware store. It would've been nice if the drillbit was included in the kit. I did find one at a local hardware store for $6.35. By the time I was done drilling my last hole the drillbit is now useless, burned the tip out and last hole was hard to finish. When I first started my measurements I didn't realize the truck model at the top of the page and initially measured for a GMC, but I own a tundra. I was thankful my wife came in and was talking with me and disrupted the job. After she left is when I realized I measured for the wrong vehicle. Double check everything before drilling. Very good product and would definitely recommend it to another person.

by:

I neeeded to replaced my 15 year old hitch, shopped around, did my research, decided on the Curt A16. LOVE this hitch! On the old hitch I couldn't see the king pin when backing up, old plate sat high in front, this one stays level so you can see the pin and it's highth easily. When the hitch locks around the pin you get a green indicator on the front of the hicth, nice feature. You can easily see that the pin is locked in by double checking the back of the hitch. This is a slider hitch, mechanism works smoothly and trouble free. Like anything else, clean it, lubricate it, maintain it. Would recommend this hitch, would buy it again. Nicely priced at Etrailer. One more thing; Instalation and assembly were easy, basic nuts and bolts.

  • How To Determine if Curt A16 Slider Hitch will Fit Rails in Bed of 2013 Toyota Tundra
If the rails in the bed of your family member's truck like what come with the Curt kit # C16304-200 that you referenced and are 22 inches apart on center your Curt 16k slider like part # C16521 will fit and work well. These are industry standard rails which are by far the most common design of rails which nearly all manufacturers match the design of. This allows most hitch and rail kit brands to be able to swap between each other.

For the 8 foot long bed versions of the 2016 Toyota Tundra Curt recommends the fifth wheel rail kit # C16304-200 as the correct fit. The # C16468-204 fits the 6-1/2 foot long bed versions of the truck only. For a hitch the Curt A16 part # C16120 is a really great option. It has a jaw design that wraps tightly to the king pin of the trailer for a smooth ride and a head that pivots quite a bit to allow for easier connection/disconnection of the hitch.

The Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Bracket Kit # C16448 that you referenced is not a fit for your 2007 Toyota Tundra with 8-foot bed, but this type of custom under-bed bracket does avoid the need to drill into a vehicle's frame. Such custom-fit brackets use existing holes in the vehicle's frame as their attachment points. For your Tundra we do offer both custom and semi-custom 5th wheel install kits. For example, Reese offers a custom bracket kit # RP50084-58 that will not require you to drill...

If by 'long bed' you mean an 8 foot bed, no you will not need a sliding fifth wheel hitch to tow your Cougar 27sab Xlite. I'm assuming you have adapter rails like # C29BR in your Ram 2500 puck system which are industry standard rails. If that is the case then yes, you can install the Curt A16 # C16521 on the same rails. You can also swap out the head. The Curt R16 # C16560 is the base for both the E16 and A16. The A16 replacement head is the # C16520 and you will also need the head mounting hardware # C35UR.

  • Will The B&W Patriot Slider 5TH Wheel Hitch Fit The Demco Rail Adapter For a 2024 Silverado 2500?
While the Sliding B&W Patriot 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVK3270 will not fit on the Demco 5th Wheel Rail Adapter # DM6333 I would recommend going with the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3775. If you prefer a more economical option as you already have the rail adapter check out the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16521.

  • How to Determine Clearance for Towing a Fifth Wheel with 2016 Ram 2500 Short Bed with Factory Kit
To determine if you're going to have clearance you're going to have to do some measuring. Since you have the factory rail kit on your 2016 Ram 2500 with the 6 foot bed, you can find the center point between the pucks in your truck bed. This will be where the jaws of the fifth wheel hitch will be. With your tail gate open, measure from this point to the end of your tail gate, and measure on your trailer from the king pin to the body of the trailer. This will tell you if you have the distance...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for a 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 w/ a Short Bed
Since your 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 has a short bed, you would need either a rotating pin box, if your bed is 5-3/4' in length, or a sliding fifth wheel hitch, if your bed is 6-1/2' in length. These options would allow for enough turning clearance to prevent the nose of the trailer from coming into contact with the cab of your Silverado when making tight turns. If your 2017 Keystone RV Cougar X-Lite 29RES comes with a Lippert Turning Point or Reese Sidewinder pin box then you'll need...

  • How to tell if 5th Wheel Rails in Bed of 2008 F250 Short Bed are Compatible with Curt E16 Hitch
The Curt E16 fifth wheel hitch # C16115 uses industry standard fifth wheel rails. The slots in the rails that the E16 would use are 21-1/2 inches center to center when measured side to side and 22 inches center to center when measured front to back. I've showed these dimensions on the diagram I've edited for you. For a short bed truck, in order to prevent the rear of the cab from colliding with the front corner of the fifth wheel during turns, you'll need to use a sliding fifth wheel hitch....

The underbed rail system we have for your 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 with a 6-1/2' bed is the B&W Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1019-5W which you would then pair with the Companion Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3400-5W. If you're wanting more of a standard kit then you need the Curt Custom Installation Kit # C65KR but this is an above-bed system. At this time a kit like the Under-Bed Rail Kit # RP30868 doesn't exist for your truck. If you want an above-bed kit then the hitch I recommend is the Curt...

  • Is the Curt X5 5th Wheel Base Rails Adapter for Curt EZr Double Lock Offered with Offset
The Curt X5 5th Wheel Base Rails Adapter part # C16210 is not offered with an offset. If you need additional turning clearance then it can be used with a sliding fifth wheel hitch like the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16521 which is what I recommend. • 5th Wheel Install Kit and Slider Hitch Recommendation for 2015 GMC Sierra Duramax Diesel Short Box
A fixed 5th wheel hitch cannot be used in your 2015 GMC Sierra Duramax diesel with 6.5-ft box. Short bed trucks like yours must use a sliding 5th wheel hitch in order to have enough clearance for tight turns. In terms of an installation kit I recommend a custom type since this will reduce overall install time and eliminate the need to drill into the truck's frame for the under-bed brackets. These will mount to existing holes in the frame. I suggest the Curt # C16411-204. For a sliding...

The easy way to tell if your hitch is an EZr or a double lock is to look at the sides of the hitch ball. If there is a slot that runs between the ball holes it's EZr (see first picture. If there is only two holes it's a double latch (second picture). Then you can install a fifth wheel hitch like the A16 slider part...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch for 2002 Silverado 2500 HD with 6-1/2-foot Bed
The best type of truck to pull a larger 5th wheel trailer such as a 39-foot Jayco is a 1-ton long-bed. Long beds avoid the issue of too little turning clearance and 1-tons will have the power needed to pull a heavy trailer without strain. They also avoid the need for slider hitches which usually require you to get out of the truck to release the slide before making a tight turn in a campground. Trucks with a 6-1/2-foot bed will require you to use a sliding type hitch unless the trailer...
