Secure, Interlocking Two-Piece Jaw

Three-Point Indicator System

A20 Color Indicator System

Get peace of mind with Curt's color-coded lock indicator. Just look at the indicator - either the one on the handle or the one on the hitch itself - to determine whether the jaw is in the correct position to uncouple (red), couple (yellow) or tow (green).

Video Transcript for Ultimate Overview of the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch

Today we're going to take a look at the Curt A20 dual-jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch with a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now, this fifth wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so that you can tow your fifth wheel trailer. It uses the interlocking two-jaw system right here, which provides a nice 360-degree jaw-to-kingpin contact, and because of that it'll give you less rattle, more security than your slide bar models. Also, on the front of each jaw, over here and over here, you can notice there's two built-in grease zerk fittings, which will give you easy lubrication of the jaws. This hitch does use a fully articulating torsion head for controlled coupling and a nice stable, quiet ride. It will self-align for easy hookup, and helps suppress road shock to reduce any bothersome towing noise. The handle right here is a lockable handle.

It's a very short-throw single-handle operation. The nice thing about it, also, it does self-reset to the ready-to-couple position after uncoupling. Now, when you put this together, when you mount the crossmember to the legs, there's three rows of holes on the crossmember, so it actually will give you a four inch hitch height adjustment. The hitch height would be measured from your truck bed to the top of the hitch head, and you want that to be as close as possible, so when you're towing your fifth wheel with your tow vehicle, you want those level. It gives you three choices, anywhere from thirteen inches of hitch height adjustment up to seventeen inches. One of the nice features on this is the three-point indicator system. It'll tell you what position the jaws are in.

What's nice about it is that it's color-coded. Let me just swing this around so you can be able to see. If you notice, right under the hitch head, right here, you'll notice right now it's showing solid green. That means the jaws are completely closed. If we had a kingpin in there, the green would mean you're ready to tow.

This color coding will tell you if the hitch is ready to uncouple, couple, or tow. What's nice about those colors and looking, if you're in the cab, the cab would be right here, you can turn around as you're hooking up or uncoupling and watch the color, and when it changes, it tells you the position of the jaws. Basically, the green, like it is now, the jaws are locked closed; it's safe to tow. If it goes to yellow, let me just unhook this and pull out the handle. You can see right now, because I opened the jaws, it's showing yellow. Yellow means the jaws are ready to couple.

It's safe to back in the truck to couple up to your fifth wheel. It if would show red there, that means the jaws are locked open, and it's safe to pull your truck away. When it's red, you do not want to couple. Also, this has a nice fast one-pin head removal, makes it very easy for one person to remove the hitch. Back here, there's a clip you can pull out, and then you can pull this large pin out, and that'll allow you to take the head out of the crossmember so you can take it apart in pieces, which makes it easy for one person to remove the hitch. Also included with this . Let me roll this around here. There we go. Included with this, I have laid out, comes with the plastic loop plate right here. This plastic loop plate will go onto your kingpin and lets the kingpin glide smoothly into the hitch during hookup. Also comes with, you can see, the pins and clips for attaching the legs to your base rails. This is a simple installation with base rails and an installation kit. Now, the base rails and the installation kit we do sell separately on our website. I would recommend to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show you the correct base rails and installation kit for your application. This fifth wheel hitch is compatible with B and W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley above-bed base rails. This is a sturdy steel construction with a durable carbide powder-coat finish. Again, the specs on this. The gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds. The vertical load limit or pin weight capacity is 5,000 pounds. We had mentioned the hitch height adjustment from thirteen inches to seventeen inches. What I'm going to do now is, we already have the jaws open, ready to couple, showing yellow, so what I want to do is here's an example. This is what a kingpin would look like on your fifth wheel. When you go to hook up, your kingpin would slide in between the two jaws, just like this, and once you get it far enough, your jaws will completely wrap around the kingpin. You notice the handle automatically slides up. The holes line up, so you just take your pin and clip, drop your pin into the hole, clip it, and that'll lock the handle. Now, the hole is large enough, you could actually put a padlock on there if you wanted extra security. It does come with this attached pin and clip. With the handle locked, you look back here at the color, it's showing green. That means you're all ready to tow. Again, to uncouple, you just pull your pin out, open it back out, and go, be able to back right out. That should do it for the review on the Curt A20 dual-jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch with the 20,000 pound weight capacity.

great hitch.

by:

Install was easy and the hitch performs perfectly. I have ZERO complaints. Even a year later, it performs great.

by:

The hitch has been flawless.
To date
I have asked customer service to explain how I can separate the upper section from the lower section after pulling the connection pin with no definitive response. I have have very similar models in the passed and they have come apart with ease. Not this Curt though. Any help is greatly appreciated.

by:

Love it. Easy to take apart and move! The instructions were very clear on how to assemble. I pull a 43ft camper and have yet to have any problems! Well worth the $$

by:

I have towed with the Curt A20 for a few thousand miles. I really like this hitch. The visual hooked versus unkooked indicator is awesome. It operates flawlessly. I do get some chucking over bridge expansion joints. However, it seems like most people have this problem. On normal roads it pulls great.

by:

I am pleased either the hitch. Like the design that allows you to separate the hitch from the base simply by pulling a pin. Makes it a lot easier for 1 person to install and remove it from the bed of the truck. Very prompt shipping from etrailer

by:

Hitch slid into existing rails after a very minor adjustment. Took my son and I about 25 minutes to assemble, torgue bolts and adjust rails in the bed of my truck. we have used it twice already and camper did not bang and pop like it did on old worn out receiver.
The ordering process was also very smooth. Kelsey took the time to explain the differences in the hitches before I made my decision!
I Would recommend both etrailer and this hitch if you are looking to change out!

by:

Hitch came packed well even though the box looked banged up. Everything was still undamaged and in good usable condition, just minor scuffs. I think this unit will have more when I get done with it. Watched a you tube video from curt on installation and had little trouble installing the hitch following the enclosed guidelines. Everything lined up according to plan. I think the hardest part was getting access by the heat shield. Tough spot to work on but I had help from a younger, more adapt helper who was able to manage just fine. A creeper for underneath was super handy and a 6 foot ladder to climb in and out of the bed made it a whole lot easier. Really did not need to use a lift. Would have made it a bit harder to work in the bed. My truck is quite high which allowed nice working space underneath.

by:

I already had a curt goose neck frame mounted in truck so I used the Curt adopter plate # 16220 an the A 20 curt 5 wheel hitch assembly was very easy with no issues looking forward to putting it to work with my G M C 3500 also purchased a curt bumper dual ball adjustable hitch

by:

The product shipped and was received in a timely manner. The installation went very good, took me about 3 1/2 hours to install. Instructions were easy to understand. The installation kit came with many extra parts so I wasn't worried about missing parts. Items are very heavy so be careful lifting. The drillbit needed for the holes is 17/32 which is an uncommon bit to find at a hardware store. It would've been nice if the drillbit was included in the kit. I did find one at a local hardware store for $6.35. By the time I was done drilling my last hole the drillbit is now useless, burned the tip out and last hole was hard to finish. When I first started my measurements I didn't realize the truck model at the top of the page and initially measured for a GMC, but I own a tundra. I was thankful my wife came in and was talking with me and disrupted the job. After she left is when I realized I measured for the wrong vehicle. Double check everything before drilling. Very good product and would definitely recommend it to another person.

by:

Excellent hitch, took two of us 10 minutes, during a rain storm lol, to put together and install! As far as towing our Redwood 5th wheel it performed flawlessly, easy to hook up and the ride was super smooth and no noticeable bucking!

by:

Very nice piece!Arrived sooner than expected. I have the A16 version, that I used for a 10k Lbs 5th wheel and that handle very well but now I'll be towing a 16k tow hauler so I know this a20 will do just fine. And I love the locking jaw versions. I feel these are most secured in any type of towing.

by:

Love this hitch, the Double jaws around the king pin is great,

by:

Seems like a good hitch, installed but haven't used it yet. The way the hitch is packaged is terrible. Even the bolt and bracket kit for the rails wasn't packaged very well. Heavy objects in a box flying around. Box was ripped open but luckily didn't lose any parts. Installed on a 2007 dodge 3500.

by:

Shipping was extremely fast and all the extra information that can with the products I purchased made the entire experience that I would return for and refer friends to.

by:

Exactly what I ordered. Now I feel comfortable towing my 5er

by:

This Curt hitch A20 is by far the easiest to install and awesome to hookup and unhook. Money well spent!!!!

by:

Very nice product.....had some initial installation parts issues that etrailer quickly resolved....I've got 18K pounds on this hitch and all is well, including a few steep grade up and downs.....trailer rides nicely in hitch with virtually no chucking....hitch height just fits under the bed cover and I can remove the hitch
from the rails in two pieces by myself.... really satisfied....I'd recommend this product

by:

This hitch works very well. No lurching bucking or noise when braking or accelerating. Unit is heavy but the head removes from the body easily and makes it more manageable. Overall I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

by:

Bought this as an open box item. I called on a Saturday to confirm a few details on the item and got my questions answered in just a few minutes! Thanks Brett! Was repacked great so arrived in great condition. etrailer has excellent service!

by:

I did call for etrailer customer board for help upgrading my ride pulling my fifth wheel . After many questions on how was ride was at the present he coke up with the curt A20 trailer hitch.
I am not a experienced driver but feels the difference now, and etrailer customer service not only got my drive better but save me money buying the right equipment.
Thank you guys

by:

Very good hitch, I'm pleased with durability and ease of use. I didn't give it 5 stars because of the base locking pins that are slightly smaller than the holes they fit in and make the trailer "clunk" when taking off or stopping.

by:

I did my research & saw excellent reviews for the Curt products. I was looking for a 16 locally but none were in stock & none could be available before I left to get our fifth wheel. So I had a 20 shipped to our destination which arrived a day earlier than expected. We had it installed & drove it back home—almost 2000 miles. It handled rough roads, construction zones & road work, and unexpected snow storms with ease. I am very happy with our unit & would strongly recommend Curt products.

by:

I'm happy with the performance of the hitch. The color indicator is added piece of mind that I'm doing things right. It did come with a few minor scratches from shipping and a few scratches most likely came from the factory. Like most 5th wheels they're heavy, so you won't want to carry it far without a dolly. I'm sure the poor UPS guy got a work out. The 7 blade in the box, above bed rails, and hitch were in in 3.5 hrs, but I have a hoist, which helps but not needed to get things installed. I can't express how helpful the installation videos were.

by:

Overall we are very happy with the hitch. We had a learning curve and it took a while for the product to sort of break in but it has worked well for us. The reason for 4 stars vs. 5 is: We were very unhappy with the way it was shipped. It was damaged but not so we could not use it. The packaging was destroyed and the product was dented and had to be painted due to all the scrapes. It arrived pretty beat up. Recently the safety pin chain broke and will have to be replaced. Braided cable might be a better option. The chain given was pretty weak for the abuse that it has to take.

  • How To Determine if Curt A16 Slider Hitch will Fit Rails in Bed of 2013 Toyota Tundra
If the rails in the bed of your family member's truck like what come with the Curt kit # C16304-200 that you referenced and are 22 inches apart on center your Curt 16k slider like part # C16521 will fit and work well. These are industry standard rails which are by far the most common design of rails which nearly all manufacturers match the design of. This allows most hitch and rail kit brands to be able to swap between each other.

The Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Bracket Kit # C16448 that you referenced is not a fit for your 2007 Toyota Tundra with 8-foot bed, but this type of custom under-bed bracket does avoid the need to drill into a vehicle's frame. Such custom-fit brackets use existing holes in the vehicle's frame as their attachment points. For your Tundra we do offer both custom and semi-custom 5th wheel install kits. • Fifth Wheel Rail Kit Part Number for 2016 Toyota Tundra Long Bed
For the 8 foot long bed versions of the 2016 Toyota Tundra Curt recommends the fifth wheel rail kit # C16304-200 as the correct fit. The # C16468-204 fits the 6-1/2 foot long bed versions of the truck only. For a hitch the Curt A16 part # C16120 is a really great option. It has a jaw design that wraps tightly to the king pin of the trailer for a smooth ride and a head that pivots quite a bit to allow for easier connection/disconnection of the hitch.

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendations for 2007 Toyota Tundra Long Bed
If by 'long bed' you mean an 8 foot bed, no you will not need a sliding fifth wheel hitch to tow your Cougar 27sab Xlite. The non-sliding version of the E16 is part # C16115. This being said, the E16 uses a slide bar type jaw that will allow the fifth wheel's king pin to rattle and bang around in the hitch. A LOT. This hitch, similarly to your Curt Q20, is rated for 20,000-lbs. If you let me know the size of your bed and if you have the OEM prep...

  • Correct Curt 5th Wheel Install Kit for a 2020 Ram 3500
The correct Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for a 2020 Ram 3500 is part # C16430-204. The Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit is a custom bolt-on fit with no cutting or drilling required into the frame. If you don't already have a fifth wheel hitch, the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16140 is my recommendation because of the interlocking dual jaw system which has a tight grip on the king pin and works to reduce chucking and jarring.

  • Comparing Curt A20 and Curt Q20 5th Wheel Hitch for 2020 GMC Sierra 3500
The difference between the Q20 # C16130 and the A20 # C16140 is the design of the head. The A20 is the newer design that has the more standard dual pivoting head allowing front to back and side to side movement. The Q20 has a spherical axial bearing that allows 360 degree movement for a quieter ride. Customers have also at times had issues with easily connecting to their trailer because the head can move in all directions. My recommendation for you is the A20 and if you have the factory...

  • Is a 2500 Truck Capable of Towing a 5th Wheel Trailer
To determine the maximum trailer weight you can tow with your truck, you will need to find both the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) and the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). These figures can be located on the information tag inside the drivers door jamb. If you subtract the GVW from the GCWR, that will give you the maximum gross trailer weight (GTW) you can safely tow. With that being said most 2500 or 3/4 ton trucks will be more than capable of towing a 5th wheel trailer with a GVWR of...

  • What is Difference Between Curt A20 and Q20 Fifth Wheel Hitches
The Curt A20 # C16140 and Curt Q20 # C16130 are very similar 5th wheel hitches with the A20 being the more recent and improved version. The major difference is the A20 has interlocking jaws to further secure your king pin as opposed to the Q20 jaw locking system that do not interlock. This interlocking design is intended to give you more king pin contact on all sides for less jarring and chucking. The 360 degree head design that the Q series had didn't offer as much of a difference in...

  • Can Curt A20 5th Wheel Head Unit Replace Curt Q20 Head Unit for Use With Sidewinder
I reached out to Curt about this, and what they told me was that the Q20 and A20 use different legs with different mounting, so the Head Unit for Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16540 will not fit on the Q20 legs. Neither one will work with a Reese sidewinder, so you'll instead want to go with something like the Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Slide Bar Jaw - 16,000 lbs # C16115 which fits standard 5th wheel rails like you should have. To use this with a rotating pin box, you'll...

  • Best Kind of Truck and Hitch to Tow a 5th Wheel Trailer
To start the best trucks for 5th wheel or gooseneck trailer towing are going to be 1-ton long bed trucks. So I do recommend removing the adapter that is on it and using...
