Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the Blue Ox Hitch Extender for Tow Bars

Today we're taking a look at the Blue Ox Hitch Extender. This hitch extender moves your receiver opening back to provide clearance for rear-mounted accessories. The unit's made from a sturdy steel construction, it's a really nice design. It has a corrosion-resistant black powder coat finish all the way around, so that protects it from the elements, keeps rust and corrosion away from the extender. It does come with a pin and clip, that's a 5/8 inch diameter pin. This is designed to fit into a two-inch by two-inch trailer hitch receiver, and as you can see here it has two pin holes at the back of this area right here, so it actually offers to different extension links. From the center of this pin hole right here to the center of this pin hole is about 12 1/2 inches.

From the center of this pin hole to the center of this pin hole is 14 1/2 inches. Those are your extension measurements. It has a maximum gross towing capacity of 10,000 pounds and a maximum tongue weight capacity of 1,000 pounds. The overall length of the unit, measuring very front to very back, is about 18 1/8 inches long, and from the front of the receiver opening right here to the center of the pin hole measures about 2 1/2 inches. That's from this portion here to the center of that pin hole. Now, please note this hitch extender is designed for using hitch-mounted accessories or for flat towing only. Do not use to tow a trailer, using this extension will also reduce your hitch's tongue weight capacity by 50%, so please keep those items in mind. That's gonna do it for today's look at the Blue Ox Hitch Extender..

I was looking for an extender to tow my new ATC STO400 trailer. I looked at several with 500Lb TW capacity and then I found Blue Ox unit. This thing is a beast, machined from solid steel. The TW is rated at 1,000Lbs with only a 1/3 hitch capacity loss!

by:

The Blue Ox Avail was a perfect tow accessory for us to tow a F-150 or a 2009 Honda Fit behind our 40’ Motor Home. It is easy to connect and disconnect. It is sturdy and functional. Great product for towing a vehicle!

Great service

by:

Its one of the best hitch extensions out there. Super heavy duty

by:

Fast delivery and good quality

by:

Heavy duty. Very well made.

by:

Very well constructed, fits properly and is rated for 10,000 lbs.

by:

Ordering parts is easy and straightforward. I look forward to putting my e-bikes on the back of my Rv and use this extender to make space between my Rv and truck.

by:

I have received the hitch extension and it appears to be well made and heavy duty. I will be towing my travel trailer for a one hour weekend trip this Friday and will use it then.

Well, Hubert P., what is your opinion of it after using it? Thanks

It went well. The extension is rated for 10,000 lb and will give me the space I need to have my 4 wheeler in the back of my truck and pull my travel trailer with the tail gate down for the hunting seasons. With the hitch extension you need chain and electrical cord extensions as well.

During the hunting season I moved my camper several times with your product and have no complaints

by:

This extension is specifically recommended for the HydraLift motorcycle lift, when towing with a motorcycle on the lift. The extension is rather short, only 12 inches of extension, which seemed to me to not be enough, but that is what Hydralift recommended I use. I saw many cheaper / less expensive options, but only the Blue Ox was based on a solid slug insert with a sleeve around the solid hitch insert. This thing is super sturdy! All others were constructed of squared tubing inside larger squared tubing. This thing is a solid steel billet inside the outer squared tubing that makes the 2 inch hitch insert. One note, this is heavy! It is not going to bend. I believe the weight rating, some of the others, I would not trust.

by:

The hitch extender is very heavy and we anticipate that it will work great for camping.
The product description for measurements was really good.

We used the hitch extension for towing our boat and it worked real well.

by:

Use this in conjunction with a bicycle rack to carry our bikes between the coach and towed. This is a 10,000 pound extension that I don’t have to worry about when towing my 4,600 pound towed.

I just wanted to give you a heads up that using the # BX88264 Blue Ox Extender or any hitch extender, for that matter will lower the tongue weight capacity of your hitch receiver by 50 percent. Using an extender moves the downward force exerted on the hitch accessory further away from the hitch itself, which exerts additional stress upon the hitch and its attachment points to the vehicle, which can cause the hitch to fail. Which would be bad.

by:

Product works as described. I have a ramp system in the bed of my truck I use to carry my Harley in the bed while I tow my camper. Need to be able to drive and maneuver with the tailgate down on my F250. This product allows me to do that. Trailer is a 2017 Forest River Vibe 288rls with a 750lb tongue weight.

by:

Looks and feels very strong

by:

An excellent product for extending the trailer hitch and being able to pull the trailer and travel with the end gate down and side by side in the truck box.

by:

Exactly as expected and described. I'm anxious to load my truck camper, pop in my extension and load up my hitch cargo carrier then hit the road. I tried asking around for suggestions but ended up just doing the math. Although using an extension cuts the tongue weight by 50% I have a 2,000# tongue weight so in using this I can only plan on 1,000# and the maximum weight I can carry on the cargo carrier is 600# so I'm in excellent shape. No more struggling to load/unload all my outdoor cooking gear... Thank you Etrailer!

by:

the trailer im pulling has a short tongue, this extender lets me make sharp turns with out damaging my bumper. its made for straight towing but with my class 5 hitch rated at 1800 lb. minus 50% tongue weight its works great for my needs. add the super fast shipping and this product gets 5 stars.

by:

Its alot heavier than I thought. I have a 12 foot flab bed dually truck and when we bought our camp trailer they sold us a longer hitch but if you have to doba sharpbturn it still hits the steel bed corner. Hopefuly this is makes it long enough! Going on a trip in a few days can't wait

by:

Incredible service...communication with me every step of the way. Product was here in a matter of days. Haven't used yet to tow but it extends my hitch the perfect amount and is heavy duty. No worries that it won't be able to handle my trailer. Cheers.

by:

Have ordered from e trailer before and will continue. This 10K hitch extension is just what I needed. Fast everything on order!

by:

I have an 8 ft. camper on a short bed pickup. I needed the extension to tow my race trailer. It is perfect in every way. Very heavy duty and high quality. It will last a lifetime.

by:

I had to Search, but etrailer was the only one at any price to have this extension....not the length but the strength. I had an issue with the shipping not being evident and etrailer contacted me and made sure I received it when needed. I think they need to update site to include shipping/delivery dates. But excellent service. Not the first order and will not be the last.

by:

Built tough, to last.

by:

Got my 12 inch Blue OX hitch extension. Heavy duty, time to put it to work!

by:

Really fast shipping, Really quality equipment. This hitch extender is solid steel up to just behind the second hole on the extension part. It also comes with a pin and key.

  • Recommended Extended Shank for a Weight Distribution System
David, instead of a hitch extender, which will cut your capacity in half and add another possible point of failure, I recommend using a longer shank. You'll want to check out the Equal-i-zer Weight Dist Shank # EQ90-02-4600 which measures 18" long, which should give you plenty of clearance, will work with 2" receivers, and has a tongue weight range of 600 to 1,400 lbs.

  • Available Weight Rating of 2-Inch Hitch Extensions
We do have hitch extenders for 2-inch hitches that can help with clearance needed when the truck has a slide-in camper in the bed and is towing a trailer. These are shown on the linked page and they come in various lengths and weight ratings. The longest extension that carries a 10K rating is the 12-inch Blue Ox # BX88264. The Curt extension # C45796 that you referenced is rated for only 3500-lbs. If your truck were equipped with a TorkLift SuperHitch you could use their 24-inch extension...

  • Does the Blue Ox Hitch Extender item # BX88264 Reduce My Hitches Capacity?
The Blue Ox Hitch Extender item # BX88264 will reduce your hitches capacity by 50%. Your F-350's 2,500 tongue weight should be high enough that this reduction won't stop you from carrying your dirt bikes because you will still have a 1,250 lbs capacity. I do recommend checking with your carriers manufacturer to make sure the carrier is rated to be used with hitch extenders.

  • Is Hitch Extender Needed With Blue Ox BX8870 KarGard Towed Vehicle Protector
According to Blue Ox, users of the Blue Ox # BX8870 KarGard typically don't need an extender to increase the distance between the motorhome and the towed vehicle because the KarGard will sit pretty close to the vehicle being towed (about 1 foot). If you should find you need an extender, Blue Ox tells me that it's acceptable to use the # BX88264 for 12 inches of extension or # BX88265 for 6 inches of extension, but the tow bar will need to be within 3 inches of level. They go on to say...

I spoke with my contact at Blue Ox and she confirmed that extender # BX88264 can used to flat tow your 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 as long as you are within the capacities of the unit. • 1000-lb Tongue Weight Hitch Extender Recommendation
I have a solution for you- the Blue Ox Hitch Extender for Tow Bars # BX88264 which has a 1000-lb tongue weight / 10000-lb towing weight capacity and will also provide a 12" extension for your hitch. This is the only hitch extender we currently offer with that tongue weight capacity that does not required the use of a weight distribution hitch. This extender would only be able to be used to flat tow and we do not currently have hitch extender that can be used for regular towing applications...

Your best option is to use an extra long weight distribution shank, like the Curt # C17122, which is will extend your hitch pin hole out an additional 14 inches and offer a 1,500 lbs tongue weight capacity. We do offer many trailer hitch adapters that will extend the hitch receiver on your 2016 Ram 2500.
