Friction-style sway control system uses a telescoping bar with friction pads to fight trailer sway. Adjustable tension lets you set the right amount of resistance for your setup. Attaches to your trailer and weight distribution system or ball mount.

  • Friction-style sway control effectively fights trailer sway after it begins
    • Reduces side-to-side movement caused by winds, passing traffic, curving roads, or sudden maneuvers
  • Bar unit houses the sway control mechanism
    • Interior arm telescopes in and out as your trailer moves
    • Friction pads rub against each other to create resistance
  • Adjustable tension lets you set the perfect amount of control and resistance
    • Tension-adjustment screw easily turns in 1/4" increments to fine-tune tension
    • Built-in lever lets you disengage the system to completely release tension
  • Trailer-mounted ball lets you connect the bar unit to your trailer frame
    • May be mounted to either side of your trailer
    • Bolt-on installation with included self-tapping screws
  • 1-1/4" Hitch ball mounts on weight distribution system head to provide attachment point for sway control unit
    • Included adapter bracket can be welded to system head if there is no ball mount platform
  • Easy to remove - simply unclip the bar unit from each attachment ball using the included safety clips
  • 1-Year limited warranty

Note: Not for use on trailers with surge brakes. It is recommended that you remove this sway control unit before backing up/reversing and before towing in slippery conditions such as on wet, icy, gravel, or snow-covered roads.

When installing this sway control system, follow the included instructions and measure 24" straight back from the center of the coupler along the frame of the trailer to determine the location of the spacer plate and trailer-mounted attachment ball. To achieve proper alignment, the spacer plate may not be necessary in every application.

Curt Sway Control on Trailer Frame

One friction-style sway control can be used for trailers with up to 6,000-lb GTW. If your trailer's GTW is between 6,000 lbs and 10,000 lbs, you will need 2 sway-control units, 1 on either side of the trailer. You will also want to use 2 units if your trailer is 26' or longer.

The sway control kit I ordered went on the receiver of my travel trailer easily and fits well. I tested the turn radius to see how sharp of a turn it would make without "hitting" and it performed perfectly. I haven't had the chance to take it on the road yet but don't anticipate any problems.

Im so glad I ordered the sway control kit. Ive used it several times when pulling my travel trailer and it has made all the difference.
Justin - 03/17/2019

I've been running a single sway bar for the last couple years on our 2500 and it was working well.

We recently downsized to an F150 and needed the second sway control. I'm certain it's going to help emencely.

Good price compared to other similar products. Easy site to use. Have purchased several products from etrailer and every purchase was easy, quick delivery, and exactly what was ordered.

the shipping was fast but the packaging sucked, it was all in one box and the brake controller and wire package was smashed from the 100lb weight distribution kit. I'll return the brake controller if it dose not work.

The "anti-sway bar" as I call it works as advertised. I've used this product for several decades on several applications including both the towed, and towing vehicles. It can make the difference in your comfort level on windy days. A note of caution: on some applications you'll need to remove it before backing up or you run the risk of breaking the ball.

This is a replacement for one i didn't hook up and left it on the trunk of the trailer and never found it after I got
This one was a direct replacement for my 06 model and it works great.
As usual etrailer had what I needed and at a good price!

Happy to report that after using this for a year it still works like new. Im very happy with the product
Lee T - 05/19/2021

Haven’t had a chance to use the new products yet but they are exactly what I need. I have an identical friction sway control bar on my camper and it works so well that I wanted to put one on my multi purpose trailer. etrailer kept me informed on the status of my order and delivery. Very pleased customer

Fast shipping. Technician was able recommend thus item as compatible with the weight distribution kit that I purchased prior.

The sway bar works well. The retaining clip sometimes fall out of the tow vehicle end which could be a problem. I use 2 clips at that end.

I pull a travel trailer with a Audi Q7 TDI and it is a unibody car and in the owners manual it states not to use a WDH. My trailer takes about 250 lbs. off of the front axle so the steering input is just a bit light. With this sway control bar by Curt the car and trailer feels as one and the control of the trailer is great.

Received my anti-sway bar to add to my weight distribution hitch in less than a week. Fastest service I’ve ever had. Installed it and it works great! I could only go 57 mph before and now can keep up with everyone else on the freeway! etrailer is a great place to get anything trailer related. Have always had great service and will buy from them again. 5 stars

Works like a dream! Easy to use and install. I would recommend this to anyone looking for one.
John B - 07/13/2020

This is my first time purchasing from etrailer and I have to say the experience couldn't have been better. I purchased this sway bar and other items for my new tow vehicle. After trying to piece together everything I needed for towing on a couple of other websites, and not having much luck, I went to etrailer. I was able to find everything I needed, very detailed product information, easy to navigate website, quick shipping, GREAT communication from customer service, and a price that was equal to or better than the other websites. Hands down a happy etrailer customer!

No problem with the sway bar, BUT the Curt ball mount with sway bar mount looks like it has twisted. I only pull a Casita travel trailer 3500lbs behind my half ton pickup and havent put any unusual stress on it. Kind of disappointed...
Brian - 07/24/2019

If it has twisted then I would advise discontinuing using it. As called out in the instructions if this sway control bar or any of the components come into contact with the trailer while in a jack knife position it is recommended to remove the sway control bar while backing up.

-- Etrailer Expert Rachael H - 8/7/2019

Easy to install and worked well on neighborhood test drive. Will not go on trip until May that is when it will get a good workout.

took the sway right out of my custom tag along trailer!

Everything came packaged nicely and I added it to the trailer with no issues. I can't wait to test it out on a windy day.

Worked well for my light camper. Make sure to get extra pins in case you lose one.

Curt Weight distribution hitch assembly including dual Curt 17200 sway control bars for our heavy 30 foot RV. Purchased through Etrailer Corp. the information from Etrailer was fantastic on which hitch assembly was best for my application, the hitch, bars, sway arms were delivered exactly on time with no scratches or damage. My light weight 2010 pick pulled well and was level and handled winds and passing semi trucks in the wind a pleasure! Unfortunately I don't have pictures to show because I have recently bought a new F-350 and a new 40' -5th wheel trailer and from Etrailer purchased a Demco 18K Hijacker Auto Slide 5th wheel Hitch that works fantastically.
Thank you Etrailer for best prices and service!

Super fast shipping and great products

The two units I ordered appear to be well made. I am somewhat disappointed with the loose fit between the ball and socket on both ends. There is about 0.070 inches clearance in each joint.

Looks good but have not installed it yet

Been using for a year now, works excellent, stops sway in side wind and traffic. I am using with a single axle camper that weighs 3300 lbs. and it handles it well.

Unit works as intended. The problem i had with these sway control devices is that there is no instructions on how tightly you have to clamp them down to get the desired results. It took lots of trial and error to find the correct amount of sway control for my application. And part of the problem was a video i saw on youtube where a man tightened them down too far and it pulled the small ball off of the a-frame on his trailer. If i could afforded it, I wish I would have bought a newer style WD hitch with built in sway control instead of these slides.

Very well made and solid!
It meets beyond
my expectations.

The anti sway bar works well and well worth buying and installing. There are 3 things I would say about it.
1. It has a 4 bolt mounting plate instead of 6. Disadvantage: poorer force distribution, Advantage: less drilled holes to weaken frame.
2.Could use better instructions on how to set it. It really is quite useless if you set it too loose.
3. Watch out for the front clip. Mine came off but the sway bar stayed attached (that's a good thing). I put a safety wire around the safety clip now.

Great product. Installation instructions were clear and easy to follow. Everything pictured was in the package. I paired mine with the Curt ball mount receiver w/sway control tab 2" hitch item ID D320. Products work perfectly together to stop the sway. I would highly recommend this system to anyone looking for sway control.

Great product, great sales service, great delivery.

  • Are 2 Sway Control Bars Needed for a 27 Foot StarCraft RV Trailer
You are correct, adding a second sway control bar, like the Curt Friction Style Sway Control, # 17200, is recommended for trailers over 26 feet long. I might start out conservatively if the sway you are experiencing is not too bad, and order one sway control bar. A second can always be added if needed. If the sway you are experiencing in high winds or passing large trucks is causing the trailer to push you around quite a bit, you should go with two from the start. If you are experiencing...

  • What Angle Should the Curt Friction Sway Control System Be Installed in Relation to the Trailer
Typically, friction sway control systems like the Curt Friction Sway Control System # 17200 that you referenced will be centered on the trailer frame when installed and that will yield a level installation in relation to angle of the trailer frame and hitch ball. But this all depends on the trailer, I would try to get the sway control system to be at the same angle as the trailer frame for best results. Check out the installation instructions I attached for this product for you to check...

  • Will Installation of Curt Friction Sway Control System # 17200 Affect Strength of Trailer Tongue
To install the Curt Friction Style Sway Control System, part # 17200, to your trailer will require drilling holes in the trailer frame. Drilling the few holes that are needed in the side of the tongue for installation of the sway control will not weaken the trailer tongue. I am including a link to the instructions on the friction sway control system. I would recommend to check with the trailer manufacturer to determine if the drilling of the holes in the frame will void any warranty.

  • Installation Instructions for Curt Friction Bar Style Sway Control 17200
The spacer plate and ball plate on the Curt friction sway control # 17200 need to be mounted to the side of the trailer frame at a specific measurement so the unit can work properly. If you measure from the center of the cavity in the coupler where the hitch ball would go back along the frame rail 24 inches, that is where the center of the ball on the spacer plate will need to be. The images in the instructions show a lot of top-down views to give you a better look at how the measurement...

  • Purpose of Spacer Plate Included with Curt Friction Sway Control Unit # 17200
I spoke with my contact at Curt Manufacturing, and was told that the spacer plate you describe is typically used if you are planning on bolting the ball to the trailer frame (instead of using the self-tapping screws). The ball would be stacked on top of the spacer plate then bolted to the trailer frame. It is not necessary to use the plate, you can use the self tapping screws to attach the ball directly to the trailer frame, or you can weld the ball plate to the trailer frame if you wish...

  • Can the Curt Friction Style Sway Control Bar be Used on the Left or Right Side of a Trailer
You can use the Curt friction style sway control, # 17200 on the left or right side. You will need to loosen the handle and the other bolt below it, pull the inside arm out, flip it over, then reinsert it. You will then need to unscrew the handle on top and the nut. Completely remove them both and the mounting plate. Then rotate the plate 180 degrees and put the handle where the nut was and the nut where the handle was. Then, when you flip the unit over to use on the other side of the...

The handle is actually the on/off switch for the unit and the bolt under the handle is the tension adjustment bolt. You will need to turn the On/Off handle clockwise (tighter) until the handle will stay firmly in place parallel with the main body of the sway control. Start out setting the sway control by testing with the adjustment bolt at the factory preset level of friction. You will need to perform a series of road tests with the loaded trailer. • How to Adjust a Friction Bar Sway Control on a 2000 Timberland SKY28 Towed by a 2007 Nissan Armada
One sure way to know is if the bar, # 17200, bends while you are towing. Also, it you cannot turn the handle by hand, it is too tight. But adjusting a friction sway control bar like this one requires a lot of trial and error. I would start out with it relatively loose and then tow the trailer. If you experience sway tighten it some and start towing again. Keep doing this until the trailer ceases to sway. Also, you will want to make sure that you have the proper tongue weight on the trailer...

  • Is There a Factory Preset Amount of Tension the Curt Sway Control has to Start With
There really isn't a preset amount of tension that would have to be used as a starting point for setting up the # 17200. What I would do is install it on your trailer and then get it moderately tight by hand. No need to really torque it, and then take it for a test drive and adjust as needed.

  • Does the Curt Friction Sway Control Have to Be 24 inches from Coupler to Bracket
You really want to get the distance between the coupler ball and the mounting bracket on the mounting plate to be right at 24 inches. Otherwise the warranty would be voided. The only other option I can think of would be to try the other side of the trailer frame. There might be more room there to allow for the kit to be installed. I attached an install video for a very similar sway control kit to the right for you to check out.

  • Why Is Sway Control Not Used On Wet Roads
Sway control is used to prevent the trailer from moving around when in high winds and passing vehicles, and helps keep the trailer in line on dry pavement. When towing in slippery road conditions like snow, ice, or wet roads, It is recommended to turn the sway-control unit off or counterclockwise until all of the tension is removed from the unit. Failing to do so could cause a trailer that may be sliding to pull the rear end of the towing vehicle and create a dangerous situation.

  • Using Sway Control in Slippery Conditions, Wet, Icy or Snow Covered and Gravel Roads
It is not recommended to utilize sway control when towing in slippery conditions - such as on wet, icy, or snow-covered roads or on loose gravel. It's recommended that you turn the on/off handle of the sway-control unit counterclockwise until all tension is removed from unit. Failure to do so could prevent the tow vehicle and trailer from turning properly. The Curt # 17200 you referenced, is a friction style sway control. For an example, as soon as your trailer begins to move out of line,...

  • Why Can't a Trailer with Friction Sway Control be Backed Up
If you are backing up in a straight line or with only slight turns then you can back up when using friction sway control such as # 17200. But on unlevel terrain or if you have to make tighter turns while backing up (which at some point you will) then you have disengage the system or it can damage it. It also makes backing up easier since the vehicle doesn't have to fight the friction sway system (backing up is sort of a simulated low speed sway event only with more torque on the system...

  • Is It Necessary To Disconnect Sway Control When Towing On Wet Pavement
The instructions included with the Curt Friction Style Sway Control System, part # 17200 state that when you are towing in wet, icy, gravel, or snow-covered roads, the sway control MUST be removed. I am only passing on the information included with the products we offer. The reason is that the sway control can make the system too stiff when you face road conditions like those mentioned, and if traction was lost for the trailer it would push the towing vehicle and be very dangerous. • Can Two Friction Sway Control Units Be Used on a Camper Trailer
You can install friction sway control on both sides of a trailer like the part # 17200. The only recommendation I would make is to be aware that when backing the trailer in tight situations you should probably remove the sway controls. This would be true for one as well as two sway controls. Typically we recommend two sway control units when the trailer is over 26 feet long. I would like to point out that your best defense against sway is proper trailer loading. Sway is usually caused...

  • Bent Friction Sway Control Bar After Taking a Turn While Towing a Trailer
If the tension was set aggressively then the sway bar cannot move well and that could cause it to bend. Also, if the turn made was when backing up that could have caused it as well. With friction sway bars like # 17200 they really need to be disconnected when backing up. If the metal is stressed then I do not recommend continuing to use it. Even if it appears to be fine I strongly recommend replacing the entire unit.

  • How Does Bar Style Friction Sway Control Work
A friction sway bar such as # 17200 manufactured by Curt, does not exert any force on the trailer. The trailer will be putting force on it and transfer it to the tow vehicle. But ultimately, the amount of force is dependent on how you have the unit adjusted (Newton or foot pound range is not provided). I would not say there is any bending force being applied or enough to actually bend the trailer frame. But yes, the force is not a straight line due to the 50 degree angle of most A-frame...

All you need to do is loosen the handle of the # 17200, remove the inner piece, rotate it 180 degrees and then reinsert and it would be setup to be used on the the left side of the trailer. Typically the best way to combat sway is proper trailer loading. If you can move as much of the weight in pop up to the front of the trailer you would be better off.

  • Which Side of Trailer Frame Should Friction Sway Unit Be Installed On
It doesn't matter which side the friction sway unit is placed on, it will work equally as well on the driver's side as it would on the passenger side of the trailer. For trailers 26 feet or longer in length, we recommend using two units, one on each side.

  • How Tight Should Curt Friction Sway Control # 17200 Be Adjusted
A friction type sway control unit like the Curt # 17200 should be adjusted so that it is not easy to move by hand, but still can be moved by the greater force from the moving trailer. You will need to do some road testing to find the correct adjustment for a given trailer load. Trailer configurations and loading, road and weather conditions, towing speed, tire condition and pressure, and center of gravity of trailer all affect towing. • Sway Control Recommendation for a 30 foot Bumper Pull Trailer
The Curt Friction Sway Control part # 17200 that you referenced would be an excellent choice for your trailer. Since it is longer than 26 feet you would want to run a unit on either side of your trailer. The best way to fight sway is proper trailer loading though. Sway is usually caused by having too much or too little tongue weight on the trailer. If you can get your tongue weight to be between 10 and 15 percent of the total trailer weight the trailer shouldn't sway under normal circumstances.

  • How Tight Should Curt Bar Style Friction Sway Control Be
How tight to make a friction sway bar such as # 17200 is going to depend on the trailer. Some trailers require more tension than others. The only way to know is to test it out and adjust as needed. If it is too tight and you make a sharp turn then the system will not have enough give and it can lead to problems like you have experienced.

I spoke to my contact at Curt and he informed me that there really isn't a factory preset tension that the # 17200 will have. From there tighten it two complete revolutions and you will have a great starting point.
