Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12 inch left hand, driver side hydraulic drum brake assembly for up to 7,000 pound axles. Now hydraulic drum brake assemblies are designed for use with surge type trailer brake actuators. This one happens to be a duo servo. You can see right here it's a duo plunger design, and this will deliver the same amount of braking when you're driving either forward or in reverse. Now this assembly is a manual adjustment brake. You can see right down here is your adjustment gear.

So you do have to do a periodic manual adjustment. What's nice on this if you notice, there's an access hole here that you'd put your tool through to adjust your brakes, and they do include the adjuster plug. It's a nice rubber adjuster plug, which covers that access hole. Helps keep the dirt and grime out of the assembly and off the brake shoes. Now this is the left hand driver side brake assembly. It does come with the mounting lock washer nuts to install this on your mounting flange.

Now on 12 inch size brake assemblies, the bolt is already on the brake mounting flange so all you need is the nuts that has the lock washer included. A few specs on this. This is a 12 inch by 2 inch size brake assembly. Now the 12 inch is the diameter, which is measured from this brake shoe all the way over to this brake shoe. So if we put a ruler on there's your 12 inch diameter.

The two inch wide is the width of the pad on the brake shoe. So again if we put the ruler on it, there's your two inches wide. Again, this is designed to put on a brake mounting flange bolt pattern of five bolts. It does require the use of 12 inch brake drums. The wheel size that would be used on this assembly is anywhere from 14.5 inches to 15 inches, and 16 inches.

Again this is designed for axles that are rated up to 7,000 pounds. Now this is a left hand drives side assembly. Now the way you can tell that, now on the new assembly of course you'll have a sticker that will tell you that, but if the sticker wasn't there the easiest way to tell is just look at the length of the pad on the brake shoe. This pad goes from here to here. This runs all the way from here to here. This is a longer pad. This is a shorter pad. The shorter pad is the primary shoe. That will always face the front of the trailer. So that will tell you it goes this way. That would mean that this is the left hand driver's side brake assembly.
