Video Transcript for Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Assembly Feature Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12 inch right-hand passenger side free backing hydraulic trailer brake assembly for 7,000 pound axles. This hydraulic drum brake assembly is a uni-servo design, which is used on trailers with surge type trailer brake actuators. The uni-servo means it has one plunger right here. This is a free backing brake assembly. The free backed design is designed to let you back up without engaging the trailer brake even if you're actuator is activated. You can tell a free backing design by they always have one shoe that has sort of a "D" shape to it, and that's this one right here. The size on this is a 12 inch by 2 inch passenger side trailer brake assembly.

Where they get the size from is the 12 inch would be the diameter which is measured from this shoe all the way over to this shoe. If we put a ruler on it, there's your 12 inch, and the 2 inch would be the width of the pad on the shoe. If we put a ruler on that, you can see there's your 2 inch width. This is a right-hand passenger side assembly, and the way you can tell that, now of course on a new brake assembly like this one, it'll have a sticker that'll say "right-hand side", but if that sticker wasn't on there, the easiest way to tell is you need to look at the length of the pad on the brake shoe. If you see, this pad goes all the way from here to here. This one goes from right here, right up to here, so this is the shorter pad length, this is the longer.

The shorter shoe or the pad length is a primary shoe, that'll always face the front of the trailer, so that means it'll go this way and that'll tell you this is a right-hand passenger side assembly. These brake shoes are lined with a nice automotive-grade friction material and it is fully bonded to the shoe, it's not riveted so it gives you a lot longer life, more braking torque. These are manual adjustment brakes. Here's your adjustment gear right here, so it does require a periodic manual adjustment. The backing plate on this has a nice heat coating to it to give you excellent corrosion resistance. The other thing I want to mention, if you notice, it does include this adjuster plug, and what that is, you pop that out and there's a hole there, it allows you to put your brake adjustment tool through there to adjust your brake gear there at the bottom.

Then you can put the plug back in. It's nice to have that because that keeps dirt from getting into your brake assembly and on your shoes. Again, the specs on this, it is a 12 inch by 2 inch size brake assembly. The mounting flange bolt pattern you can see is a five-bolt pattern here. Does include the mounting nuts that have the integrated washers on them already to install it. These are designed for axles rated up to 7,000 pounds, and they do require the use of 12 inch drums. That should do it for the review on the Dexter 12 inch right-hand passenger side free backing hydraulic trailer brake assembly for 7,000 pound axles..

  • Replacement Hydraulic Drum Trailer Brakes for Dexter 8-201 Brakes on a Towable Man Lift
If the brakes in the picture are 12 x 2 inch brakes then yes, you can use # 23-324 (left hand side) and # 23-325 (right hand side). These brakes are rated for 5,200 pound axles and use the 5-bolt mounting pattern as the brake in your picture. The new brakes are also uni-servo just like the one brake in your picture. Something else in your picture is interesting. I believe the brakes on there now are free backing brakes. These brakes would allow you to back up without the brakes engaging....

  • Replacement Hub and Drum and Hydraulic Brakes for a Cronkite Tandem Axle Trailer
Trailer hub and drum assembly # 8-201-5 does match your bearings. I am fairly certain you have 5,200 pound axles and not 3500 pound axles since all of the parts you need are for higher rated axles than 3500 pounds. The races come already pressed into the hub. If your wheels have a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern then this is the hub for you. This hub and drum takes 12 x 2 inch brakes. The brake assemblies that fit and that are also rated for 5200 pound axles are # 23-324 for the left and # 23-325...

  • Replacement Hydraulic Trailer Brakes for a 16 Foot Cronkite Utility Trailer
Since you have Dexter hubs and you have the 5-bolt pattern to mount brakes, you can replace them with new Dexter hydraulic brake assemblies. For 3500 pound axles though you would not have a 5-bolt pattern and the assemblies would be smaller than 12x2 inches. So I do not think you have 3500 pound axles. If you can tell me the bearing numbers you have that will help me determine the axle capacity and the correct hub. The Dexter brake assemblies you mentioned, # 23-342 for the left and #...

  • Is There A Difference In Weight Capacity On Brake Mounting Flanges
Thanks for providing the photo. That really helps when we are trying to provide information for customers. It looks like you have a 5-bolt brake system. We offer one 5-bolt brake mounting flange, part # 4-44-1. It is designed for 3 inch axles that range from 3,500 to 7,200 lb axles. These brake flanges are welded in place, so if you are going to replace them you will want to have the work done by a certified professional. These need to be concentric and square or the brakes will not wear...

  • Replacement 12 X 2 Hydraulic Brakes Duo-Servo and Uni-Servo, Plus Replacement Bolts and Washers
We do not sell the wheel cylinder only - you would have to purchase the Dexter # 23-337 hydraulic brake assembly for right hand side or Dexter # 23-336 for left side. For Uni-Servo Free Backing brakes, 7000 pounds, order the Dexter 23-342 for left hand, and 23-343 for right If you want new mounting bolts order the Redline # 7-5 bolts, and for split washers order Redline # 38LW washers.
