Video Transcript for The Low-Down on the Dexter Electric Brake Assembly w/ Cast Backing

Today, we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12-1/4 inch right-hand self-adjusting electric trailer brake assembly for 15,000-pound axles. Electric brakes are a lot easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. They basically require only an electric brake controller. We do sell that separately on our website. There is no actuator hydraulic lines necessary.

This one is a self adjusting design, which will keep your shoes properly aligned for longer lasting brakes. That requires less maintenance. There's no manual adjustments required. The way you can tell it's a self adjustment, if you look at the cable here, goes around the pulley, attaches to a lever right down here at the bottom that'll control the adjustment gear, so it automatically will adjust the brakes. This one does use the cast backing plate. If I turn this over, you can see the whole cast backing plate right here.

Does use a seven-bolt mounting flange bolt pattern. The mounting hardware to install this to your axle is sold separately. The application again on this is 15,000 pound axles. The dimension on this brake assembly is a 12-1/4 inch diameter by 5 inches wide. What those measurements will be is the diameter would be measured from this edge of the shoe all the way over to that edge.

If we take a ruler and put it on there, that'll get your 12-1/4 inches. The 5 inches would actually be the width of the pad on the shoe. Again, edge to edge, right at 5 inches. This is a right-hand passenger side assembly. The way you can tell that is, besides the label on here, when you get a new assembly, it'll have a label on there, but if that label wasn't on there, the easiest way to tell is look at the length of the pad on the shoe. This one, you can see starts all the way up here, goes all the way down to here.

On this side, it starts right here and goes down to here. This is a shorter pad. Basically, the shorter pad is the primary shoe that'll always face the front of the trailer. If you put it that way, that means this is a right-hand passenger side assembly. This brake assembly is designed to use 12-1/4 inch brake drums. These are electric brakes, so they do require the two wires in the back to be connected. You can see here's your two blue wires. You connect one to a ground, the other to the brake feed for power. Because they're both blue wires, you can use either wire for either function. That should do it for the review on the Dexter 12-1/4 inch right-hand self-adjusting electric trailer brake assembly for 15-pound axles.

  • Is Dexter 12-1/4 x 5 Brake Assembly # 23-446 Compatible with Dexter Hub/Drum Assembly # 8-285-11UC3
I did not find any purchase history for you but the electric drum brake that you referenced, Dexter # 23-446, is a left-hand 12-1/4 x 5-inch-wide brake. Its matching right-hand part is # 23-447. The hub/drum you referenced, Dexter part # 8-285-11UC3, is a 12-1/4 diameter x 4-1/2-inch-wide hub. These parts do not work together. The brake is rated for 15,000-lb axles while the hub/drum is rated for 8000-lb axles. Both their sizes and weight ratings are incompatible with each other. You will...

  • Trailer Brake Assemblies are Upside Down and on the Wrong Sides of the Axles
No problem, we can get this sorted out. The first thing I want you to look at are the centers of the axles. Round trailer axles have a bow in them so the centers of the axles should be higher than the ends. When weight is put on them they straighten out. That is part of how they get their capacity. If the axles on your trailer are upside down then the bows would be pointed down. It is possible the previous owner literally flipped the axles and that could be why the brakes are upside down...

  • Replacement Axle Recommendation for a Mobile Home Trailer To Install Trailer Brakes
You will need to replace the axles on your mobile home trailer if you plan on installing electric brakes. Mobile home trailers use non-standard spindles and we do not offer hub and drums that would fit them. For a replacement axle that comes with brake assemblies and hub and drums you would want the Axle part # e43SR. The contractor you are using to build the trailer should have no problem using this axle on your trailer. These are 3,500 lb axles. If you needed more capacity you could...
