  • Replacement Electric Drum Trailer Brakes for a 10,000 Pound Wells Cargo Trailer
The brakes on your Wells Cargo trailer could just be in need of adjustment. On drum brakes you will adjust the brakes so that there is a slight but constant drag of the pads on the drum when you turn the wheel. To see how to manually adjust trailer brake assemblies check out the video I attached, fast-forward to the 4:35 mark of the video. If the trailer has 2 axles then you likely have de-rated 6K axles (5200 pound axles). This size would be 12x2 inches. they mount to a 5-hole mounting...

  • Can Brakes Be Added to a Farm Wagon Used on Steep Terrain
It is possible in some circumstances to add either electric or hydraulic (surge) brakes to a trailer that does not have them, so it is theoretically possible to do something similar on a farm vehicle. This process will be quite involved and will depend on availability of compatible parts that will work with your existing axles and spindles. It may be necessary (and even easier) to replace the entire axle/spindle assembly with a new one rated suitably for your load requirements that has...

  • Difference Between etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes And Dexter Electric Trailer Brakes
The differences between the Electric Trailer Brake Kit w/ Dust Shields # AKEBRK-10 and the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly # 23-450 are the different manufacturers and that the # AKEBRK-10 have dust shields, and the # 23-450 does not. Also # 23-450 is just the driver side brake assembly, where # AKEBRK-10 includes the driver and passenger side brake assemblies. If you wanted the Dexter Kit you would need the Dexter Electric Brake Kit # 23-450-451 which includes both brake assemblies. Both...

  • Electric Brake Assemblies for a Trailer with Dexter 10,000 Pound Axles
It is likely that Dexter brake assemblies # 23-450 and # 23-451 are correct for your 10K Dexter axles. These brakes mount with either a 5 or 7 bolt pattern. And they do have the correct measurements; 12-1/4 x 3-3/8. Take a look at the picture I have included showing the spacing between the mounting holes for this bolt pattern to determine if these brakes will fit.

  • Replacement Electric Brake Assemblies For a 2018 Big Tex 22GN Trailer With 10K Dexter Axles
The Dexter Electric Brake Kit # 23-450-451 are the brakes you will need for your 2018 Big Tex 22GN with the 10,000lb Dexter axles. These are sold per axle so you will need 2 sets to replace all 4 of your brake assemblies. They are also sold individually as the Left # 23-450 and Right # 23-451 if you have a need to only replace one in the future. With self adjusting brakes like these it is more common for them to all wear evenly and need replaced at the same time.

Yes, the Dexter Electric, Right Hand Side, Trailer Brake Assembly, # 23-451, is manufactured by Dexter in the USA. For the left hand side trailer brake assembly and hardware, you will need part numbers # 23-450, # 7-5, # 38N, and # 38LW.

  • Electric Brake Assembly Recommendation for a Dexter 10k Axle
Yes, you can replace the hydraulic brake assemblies of your trailer with electric ones. It would just be a matter of removing the hubs, removing the old assemblies, installing the correct size/rated ones, and then wiring the assemblies back up to the trailer connector. I attached a help article that covers everything on adding brakes to a trailer as well as a picture of where to measure on your hubs so that you can pick out the correct size assemblies. Since you mentioned that you have...

You mentioned a 12-1/2 inch drum, but Dexter only list a 12-1/4 inch X 3-3/8 inch drum. The parts that I am recommending are for the Dexter Hub and Drum, # 8-218-9, which is the 12-1/4 inch X 3-3/8 inch drum. I have the complete brake assemblies for the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum - 8,000 lbs Axles - 8 on 6-1/2, # 8-218-9. Yes, you can convert the hydraulic drum brakes to electric drum brakes on your gooseneck trailer. I have included the link to all of our electric brake assemblies for a 10,000 lb axle. Just use the filters on the page to see if we have one that will work for you. I do recommend replacing your hub/drum assembly as well because not all hub/drum assemblies will work with both hydraulic and electric brake assemblies. • Width of Brake Pads on 28 Foot Gooseneck Trailer With Dexter 10K Axles
To determine which brake assembly you need, measure the width of your brake linings, as shown in the photo I edited for you. • Are there 12 x 3-3/8 Inch Electric Trailer Brakes
Like you said we have 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 inch brakes but no 12 x 3-3/8 inch brakes. When measuring though measure the inside diameter of the drum and not the diameter of the brakes. I have included a picture showing what I mean. If you measure the drum and get 12-1/4 inches then you can use 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 inch brakes such as # 23-450. But if you are measuring the inner diameter of the drum and are getting 12 inches then we will not have brakes that match the specs you need.

  • How to Determine The Axle Weight Capacity On A 20 Foot Stock Trailer
The trailer will have a plate or sticker on it that will list the VIN number. The weight rating of the axle should be listed on that same plate or sticker. Also, the axle could have a tag or plate on it that will list the weight capacity. You can also tell the weight capacity of the axle by measuring the diameter of the axle. A 3,500-lb. axle will have a diameter of 2-3/8 inches and a 6,000-lb. to 7,200-lb. axle will have a diameter of 3 inches. I am sending a link to an FAQ page on trailer...

  • Availability of Brake Installation Kit with Spindles
Changing spindles on a trailer axle requires specialized jigs and is best left to a qualified experienced welder. Any deviations from perfect concentricity of the spindle and brake flange will result in bad performance and/or damage to the components. If you have the equipment and skills to do this that's great, but if not I urge you not take that on yourself. We do not offer kits with just spindles, brake assemblies and hubs, but we do sell axles with hubs, brakes, bearings, seals etc....

So I was able to pull up some information on your Dexter Axle and based on the 008-232-05 number you listed it looks like you have a 9k rated axle. So for Dexter 9k brake assemblies you would want the part # 23-451 for the right side and part # 23-450 for the left side. These assemblies are 12-1/4 inch by 3-3/8 inch and are self adjusting. These also use a 6 lug bolt pattern to attach to the spindle of the trailer. Check out the review video I attached as well.
