The unique free-backing design, patented by DICO, lets your trailer move in reverse without actuating the brakes. When you begin backing up, the brake shoes are firm against the drum, as in a braking situation. As you continue in reverse, however, the shoes turn with the drum until the lining pressure is released and you are able to back up freely.

These brakes are designed to eliminate friction between the shoes and drum when you are driving in reverse. A trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle when backing up.

etrailer Corp.Great service, quick shipping, proper fit and they care about there customers. With that said a picture is worth a thousand words.

by:

I purchased a StarCraft Islander and couple years ago and the hydraulic surge brakes on the trailer never worked. Needing to get the brakes working I inspected what I had and what the problems were. The springs were rusted, with some broken, the wheel cylinders were seized and the pads looked to be in rough shape. I ordered the left and right Titan Galphorite Free-Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly from etrailer and just a few short days later they were on my door step. Installation was a breeze and afterwards I have great working trailer brakes again. Etrailer is the only way to go. Shipping is fast and their prices are very good.

by:

The brake assemblies were not individually boxed like the last time I bought these, but thrown in a box all together where they were free to bang and scrape against each other during shipment. This resulted it the anti-corrosion coating being scraped off in many places.

by:

Great deal. my original order was not going to be in for 2 weeks. I was notified of this and choose other drums. was able to track all the way, I liked that. I received them yesterday and they are now installed. My 2nd time working with etrailer and i will continue.

Still working great. They work very well.

Excellent product at a good price. etrailer was only souce I found that had it in stock.
Stock was important as backing plate anchor failed on my trailer & I was scheduled at a tournament in 10 days when I discovered the problem.
Got it quickly & installed the same day received so I was able to make the tournament. Thanks etrailer!

by:

Brake installation and bleeding process was easy. I had never performed a brake install before. Happy with the coating on all the parts as this is a boat trailer. Free wheel backing seems to be working well. Old brake solenoid had evidently seized up so this was a good fix but also an upgrade with coating and free wheel backing.

by:

After 25 years of using my utility trailer, it is in need of new backing plates & brake assemblies. Your parts arrived in record time & the parts look to be perfect replacements for the road-weary rusty brake assemblies. The tail light lens also fit perfectly. Thank You for the quality products.

by:

Backing plates and bearings were perfect match. For the price, it is well worth purchasing the assembly as all you have to do it bolt it on....

Not sure why there was a bolt and locking nut (loose) through the front brake pad flange onto the post flange, maybe for shipping, but it is not necessary and a pain in the butt to remove with the springs installed. If it is there for shipping purposes, then maybe use a zip tie or something easier to remove.

by:

Perfect fit and good price. Disassembled and painted over original finish for more salt protection before install. Almost corrosion free after a year and no mechanical problems. Second set I have purchased for 18 year old trailer so I am more than satisfied with salt water performance.

by:

Awesome product, working very well on my trailer. Of course system is flushed with fresh water after each use.$

by:

I purchased the left side and right side from sales woman Donna P. she was very helpful and knowledgeable. It took an hour per side 4 bolts and brake line ,bleed line put hub back on and set bearing all done. Everything fit perfect. By the way there are videos that my be helpful for beginners.

by:

Exactly as stated. Quality for a good price. etrailer provides excellent customer service. Fast shipping, great price and excellent communication with the buyer A+++++++ I will do business with them again

by:

This assembly saved me time on the order and installation. It was a direct replacement for my 30 year old Titan brake assembly. It is a quality part, delivered quickly with great service!

by:

product fit was spot on, installation was straightforward and the performance since installation, over 2500 miles of driving, has been flawless.

by:

Excellent prices, exact fit to my trailer. Highly recommend etrailer.com.

by:

Great transaction and the brake assemblies fit perfectly. I initially got the wrong size and they reimbursed me accordingly and had four new assemblies mailed out immediately. I will use etrailer in the future for all towing and trailer needs.

by:

Parts installed easily, at least as easily as parts install on an old rusty trailer. Work well once adjusted.

by:

Haven't installed everything yet but was really impressed with delivery and follow-up. Ordered Sunday (with confirmation of order and shipment), received Tuesday (with notification). Given other reviews, I expect the install to be equally efficient. Thanks etrailer!

by:

All the parts fit perfectly on my Shorelandr trailer

by:

This complete assembly will make it a lot easier to re do my brakes on my boat trailer

by:

I wished that the brakes had come with bolts to attach. Now I have to some bolts that are rated for this set of brakes.

I love the fact that they are all assembled! Keeps me from screwing it up.

by:

These are replacements on a boat trailer. Construction and materials seem to be top-notch. Easy installation and adjustment. Time will tell but they should provide years of dependable service.

by:

Brake assembly performing as expected.Good price.

by:

Great product, made my trailer new agai n.

by:

Great product for the price. Super fast shipping. Only complaint was that item was all scratched up when I recieved it so I had to touch it up with paint to make sure it didn't rust.

  • Can I Re-Use DICO-15638 Hubs with New Electric Brake Assemblies?
Some hub/drum assemblies can accept either electric or hydraulic brakes and some can only accept one or the other. It has to do with the size or in your case how the drums are cast. Some drums have uneven castings and you need a smooth inside of your drum with electric brakes so the magnets can make full contact and engage the brakes. The difference between the Titan Galphorite Uni-Servo Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly part # T4445300, and the Titan Galphorite Free-Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly part # T4423500, is that that part # T4423500 is a Free-Backing brake assembly. It will not apply brake pressure when the trailer is in reverse. So which brake assembly to choose is your choice on whether you want to have brakes on the trailer while in reverse, the part # T4445400, will allow you to have brakes in...

The hydraulic drum brakes that are good for marine applications are going to be the galvanized models like # 40716 as an example. Others, like the Galphorite coated assemblies, like # T4423400, also offer excellent corrosion resistance. Any assembly that does not have a special coating and/or is not galvanized then that would indicated it is powder coated steel, like # 23-312, and is not ideal for marine applications. • Do Hydraulic Free Backing Trailer Brakes Resist Being Reversed
Sounds like you are fine. Free backing plates will resist backing up for a second but then they release and allow the wheels to turn. If you are trying to turn things by hand with the trailer in the air that's why things seem more difficult. 5 clicks back from lock up by hand should be about right. It should feel like there's a noticeable drag as you turn them by hand but they should still be able to spin.
