Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Brake Controller 20059 Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're taking a look at the replacement mounting bracket for the Draw Tite Activator or I-Command brake controller. This is a really nice design. It's a direct replacement. It's made from a durable steel construction. Has nice finishing on it, so it's going to be protected from scratching, and chipping, and rust, and coercion. We have the elongated holes right here, so that gives us some adjustability when we're choosing our mounting location.

Typically, these get mounded underneath the dash of the vehicle, and then the brake controller slides into this position here and secures with the mounting positions on the side of the bracket. It does come with all the hardware needed to get it installed and to attach your brake controller to the bracket. One bracket's included, and again mounting hardware is included. Again, this is a direct replacement, and it's designed to work with the Draw Tite Activator, part number 5504 or I-Command brake controller, part number 5535. That's going to do it for today's look at the replacement mounting bracket for the Draw Tite Activator or I-Command brake controller.

  • Replacement Fairlead to Possibly Fit Badlands Winch
All replacement winch fairleads we offer are shown on the linked page. These come from Bulldog, Comeup and Superwinch brands and are application specific for particular winches they make. The nearest size mount we offer to your 6-3/4-inch hole spacing (or 171.4 millimeters) is part # BDW20059 which has mounting hole centers spaced at 165mm (6.49-inches). You may be able to make this item work but for an exact replacement you'll be better off contacting the manufacturer of your Badlands winch.

  • Wiring 3-Wire Breakaway Switch as Replacement for 2-Wire Switch
You can absolutely wire up a 3-wire breakaway switch like the Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch with 7" Lead Wires # HM20059 to replace your 2-wire switch; the difference is that the 3-wire switch has a dedicated ground wire while the 2-wire switch grounds through its mounting hardware. The Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch # HM20059 has the white ground wire, a blue wire which will splice into the brake wire coming out of your trailer connector and a black wire which will connect to the breakaway box.

  • Can Trailer Breakaway Pin be Easily Substituted If Broken On Trip
Breakaway plungers are pretty unique so you won't be able to easily substitute something to get you back on the road. I could tell you to cut the wire on the switch so that the brakes would release so that you could get home to order a new switch like with the part # HM20059, but since that's not safe I really can't recommend that as an ideal solution...

  • LED Status on Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch
For your Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch part # HM20059 the led indicator should only be lit when the breakaway pin is pulled, and should be solid. When the pin is inserted and the trailer hooked up it should not be on at all. If you do not have the breakaway system wired correctly, the brakes may not be getting the signal from the breakaway box. It sounds like there may be a wiring issue with the breakaway switch. I recommend that you check all your connections, specifically check the white/ground...

  • What Material Is Used For Bulldog Winch Fairlead Rollers To Rotate?
I reached out to the manufacturer and confirmed that the Bulldog Winch Roller Fairlead for Powersports - 165 mm Mount # BDW20059 uses nylon/plastic bushings. My tech contact said he doesn't know of any fairleads that have bearings whether plastic or steel.

  • Re Inserting Pin into Breakaway Switch
The piece of the switch that pulled out is keyed, so that it can only be inserted back into the switch one way. Try rotating the piece, eventually you will find the position in which it will go in. You will also want to make sure that the pin was not damaged.

  • Replacement Breakaway Kit Switch Recommendation for RV Breakaway System
Put the pin back in and check the wiring of the switch to make sure nothing was damaged. Nothing should be reset but the switch could have been damaged or the wiring as well. For a replacement switch though we have the Hopkins kit part # HM20059 which would work well as a replacement.

  • Where Does 3rd Wire On 3-Wire Breakaway Switch Get Connected To?
The 3rd wire on a 3-wire breakaway switch like the Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch with 7" Lead Wires # HM20059 gets grounded to the trailer frame or tied in to the main ground on your trailers tongue. The only difference between a 2-wire and 3-wire switch is the 3-wire switch has its own ground wire. I included a wiring diagram of the # HM20059 for you to take a look at.

  • Replacement Breakaway Pin for Landa ECOS Trailer
If you can provide me with the brand and model of the breakaway system that is used on your Landa ECOS Trailer then I can go about seeing if we have a replacement breakaway pin for you. However, the breakaway pins are not all universal. Unfortunately, I don't have any information as to what the brand and model is for your trailer. Therefore, the only option we can currently offer you is a new switch and pin, the Tekonsha Trailer Breakaway Kit part # 2005-P for two wire systems or the Hopkins...

  • How To Wire Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch Part HM20059
In regards to the Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch part # HM20059; the white wire is ground, the black wire is for 12 volt power, and the blue wire is for electric brake output. If you have a two wire switch, the above will work but the Hopkins Replacement Break-Away Switch part # HM20010 would be better since there are less connections but you can use either. The Replacement Break-Away Switch grounds though the mounting hardware which is why an additional ground is not needed.

  • Trouble Re-Installing Breakaway Pin Back In Switch
The majority of breakaway pins are keyed which means they can only be inserted back into the switch one way like the Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch part # HM20059 for example. Therefore, most likely you just don't have the pin in the correct position. That said, if the pin is damaged or there is foreign objects inside the switch that could cause issues as well. Please note, it does take a fair amount of force to remove and reinstall the pin back inside the switch. That said, there isn't...

  • How to Turn Off LED Indicator on Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch
In order to turn off/deactivate the LED indicator light on the Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch # HM20059 referenced in your question, you simply will not connect the white ground wire on the unit. If the white wire is not grounded, the LED indicator will not function but everything else will work like normal. For a non-LED version, you can also use the Hopkins Replacement Break-Away Switch # HM20010.

  • Can a 3-Wire Breakaway Switch Be Substituted for a 2-Wire Breakaway Switch
Yes, you can use a 3-wire breakaway switch like part # HM20059 in place of a 2-wire breakaway switch like part # HM20010. The connections will be the same and the only differences is that the 2-wire switch grounds through the mounting hardware whereas the 3-wire switch grounds with a single wire. The blue wire on the switch will connect to the electric brake wire coming from the trailer side connector. The black wire goes to the breakaway battery. If it turns out it is not the switch...

  • What are the Functions of the 3 Wires on Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch, # HM20059
You are correct, the Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch, # HM20059, does have 3 wires. The white wire is the ground wire and should be attached to the trailer frame. The blue wire on the switch will connect to the electric brake wire coming from the trailer side connector. The black wire goes to the break away battery. This part is just a switch, if you need a new system, I recommend Engager Trailer BreakAway Kit with Charger and Tester, # 20099. I have included a link to the installation details...

  • No Brakes On Trailer When Pin Is Pulled On Breakaway Switch
I have attached a couple of helpful articles that explain how to install and test breakaway systems. I spoke with my contact at Hopkins and they told me that the light should not illuminate unless the cable has been pulled. Since you said the light is blinking when hooked up, it sounds like there may be a problem in the wiring. You can also test the battery to make certain it has a full charge. If you do not have the breakaway system wired correctly, the brakes may not be getting the signal...
