Video Transcript for Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera Extension Cable Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins extension cable for the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera in the 5-foot length, part number HM3100504060, also available in 25-foot length, part number HM3100504061. Here's our cord and this is what it's going to look like when we're got it laid out. Here you can see we've got both ends that have the arrows so that we can line it up properly to plug it into the existing wiring so that we can extend it and get it to our monitor. This extension is going to be a great solution if you think you may not have quite enough cable for your truck. If you're got a long bed truck this definitely may come in handy. As you can see, we've got a full 5 feet of length. Now that we've got over some features, let's show you how to utilize it.

As you can see, this cable here we've got routed from the back of the truck, but we don't have quite enough to reach up to the dash where the monitor is mounted. This is where our 5-foot extension can come into play. We'll line up the arrows on the corresponding plug of our extension, plug that together. Then we've got 5 more feet to route up towards our dash, so now I'll have problem reaching it and we can mount it on either side of our steering column. that's going to complete our look at the Hopkins extension cable for the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera in the 5-foot length, part number HM3100504060..

I chose to locate the monitor next to the rear view mirror, and after reading reviews on this site and others, bought the additional cable and installed monitor first. Then I ran the cord back toward the tailgate, and installed the camera and ran the cord toward the front. Stashing the extra cord someplace safe was easy. When ever I felt uncomfortable about what I was doing, I would watch the video showing my concerned area and then move on. I figured I could install in less than one hour and a half. Didn't make it as my assistant slowed me down. (See picture)

I purchased 2 camera units about 6 months ago and postponed the review until I had used them for awhile. 1 camera a 2000 Silverado 4 door extended cab/6 ft bed and 1 for a 1987 F700 dump truck with a 16 ft bed.
I also purchased the 5 ft and 25 ft extention cables. For the Silverado the main cable was about 3 ft. short so the 5 ft cable was required and as expected, short for the Ford dump truck. On both trucks I ran the camera wire under the carpet/mat thru the floor board {driver side}.. The required hole size for the cable grommet is too small for the cable end to pass thru, so I purchased a 3/4" grommet to complete both installations.
My first attempt hitching my trailer was amazing for it was dead on and all I had to do was lower the tongue onto the ball...THESE CAMERAS ARE GREAT!

by:

I bought this camera system for my wife's Honda Odyssey and all we can tell is we love it. I wanted to conceal the cable pretty good so the extension cord is a must. It doesn't have an OEM look but all we needed was a good backup camera system with sensors and this one filled all my expectations. I highly recommend this system.

Delivered on time. Installation took about 3.5 hours on my 2005 F150. With the extended cab F150 I did not need any wire extensions. The standard wiring was long enough with a foot or so to spare.

The unit works great. Very clear image on the monitor. Beeper warning is handy and accurate for distance. Instructions were fine with the online video which I recommend. I have the factory tow package so the plug into the trailer hitch wiring was simple. I found the standard monitor settings fine and did not need to adjust contract brightness or color. I highly recommend this set up.

by:

Great product for the intended purpose. I still had a TON of extra wire left. I routed the wire from the back bumper through the firewall, up the A-pillar and into the roof center console on 2011 Tundra long bed extended cab. I needed about an extra 3 feet or so more than the kit supplied. I just ended up coiling the extra and stashing it above the console. Works great. I’m the only one who knows it’s a bit ugly up there

by:

I bought this extension for my backup camera. I mounted the camera to the rear of my fifth wheel camper so I could back into a camping site without a helper directing me and it works great!
One year and several thousand miles later and still working great.

by:

Excellent product, the screen could be a little bigger, but works great when backing up to my trailer, I had to buy the extra 25' cable because I installed this on my 40' diesel pusher.

Comments
Its working great I wired it up to help me hitch up my trailer and so I can monitor my trailer as Im going down the road.

by:

The wire extension allowed me to easily install the backup camera on our 2013 Tahoe. The added wire was needed to reach from the license plate on the tailgate to the camera on the dash.

by:

fast shipping and work out for what i needed . will come back to etrailer in the future.

Product is working fine. Mounted the camera on the back of my travel trailer, since my f150 has a backup camera on the truck. Works great, wish I could get rid of the backup lines on the monitor.

Did what I wanted it to do. Took me a while as I wanted it to be secure, safe, and permanent. All units work well, and very satisfied with quality.

So far, Im happy. I have a ground problem I cant rectify. Lights on trailer are not as bright as tow vehicle. Turn signals are slow and dim. Tried to locate flasher, but dealer said the flasher SHOULD be adequate. Still didnt find it. Dont think its in the coupler, I think its in the ground to trailer or tow vehicle. Ill find it, Just need time and better weather. Thanks. If you have a suggestion, feel free to relay it. Mark

Product came and works great... Also the customer service consultant was very good and worked with me on getting the product using the least costly expedited shipping rate before going out of town. I will continue to use etrailer for my vehicle and towing needs. Representative on the phone was great.

good product but not needed Hopkins will send Free Of Charge any Additional cable you need. If you have a SUV with the plate in the rear hatch you will need an extra 5 feet .

by:

Works just as I expected it to. I only wish it came in shorter lengths since I only needed about 2 feet.

Thanks for the great review and rating, Todd. I forwarded your comment on to the Towing department. Hopkins appreciates your business.

Unfortunately a year later, the camera has stopped working. Now, whenever I have my vehicle in reverse, all I see on the screen is blue and the sensors havent been working for some time. My guess is that the winter weather took its toll on the camera. Im saddened because I really feel that this is a good product but the weatherproofing needs to be improved.

by:

As usuall, etrailer is awesome.

by:

Did not need it but I will save it for my next installation.

by:

Needed more cable to install camera on my motor home. Got me there with cable to spare.

  • Would the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera be Long Enough for a 2013 Chevy Silverado Extended Cab
I do not know for sure that the cable would be long enough as we have not tested it, but I can tell you that the cable is 19 feet 7 inches long. If you measure from the rear of your vehicle forward and its more than that to get near the cab of the truck then you will most likely need the Extension Cable for Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera # HM3100504061. This product will give you an additional 25 feet to work with which should be more than plenty

  • Could the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera # HM50002 be Installed at Rear of a Trailer
You could install the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera # HM50002 at the back of a trailer if you wanted to. Basically all you would really need is the Extension Cable # HM3100504061 which measures 25 feet. The connector for the camera that would be at the coupler of your trailer would be an easily connected/disconnected wire so it would be just another connection you would need to make when connecting to your trailer that would be similar to standard trailer wiring.

There wouldn't be a significant enough of a voltage drop when using multiple extension cables like part # HM3100504061 with the # HM50002 to prevent it from working properly. For what you are looking to do you would be fine with the setup you mentioned.

If you wanted to install the Hopkins backup camera part # HM50002 on a longer vehicle you would just need an extension cable like the # HM3100504061 for an additional 25 feet. I attached an install video that shows the camera being installed in a similar Ford truck.

The Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System # HM50002 that you referenced would install easily and would work well on your 2013 Ram 1500. The cable that comes with this camera is 19 feet, 7 inches long so I doubt you would need the extension. But to be sure you will need to measure from your vehicle's T- connector that plugs into the 7-way plug at the rear of your vehicle to the spot where you want to mount your monitor to determine whether you will need an extension...
