brakes work great but the instalation wasn't the best calipers rub on the rim and nobody had any advise to get it to work. Even though it says that it fits a 16 inch rim but thay don't but I got it figured out no help from the compinies that make or sell the item. and when the packages showed up the boxes were all smashed up and the calipeers and brakes were all scratched so the e coating is worthless but there was nothing anyone could do. And one of the caliper bolts had fell out and i had to order a new one because they couldn't figure out how to send a bolt that fits. very disappointed

Always great and timely service. Correct parts in a very quick turn around. I've been doing business with etrailer for years and have bought many items from them because of their great service and quick delivery. With all the incompetence these days, it's nice to deal with true professionals.

by:

Nice upgrade from electric drum brakes to disc brakes. Clearance on calipers to my 16” steel trailer rims was tight. May upgrade to 17.5” rims in the future.

Product was used and works fine I had to cut 1/4 inch line to run it as I wanted to bothsides and teed it infront of drivers side to across to curbside for othere wheels which I ran a 3/16 line to each wheel. I had to buy extra fittings but all worked out brakes work as designed.

I had to upgrade my fifth wheel to a motorhome do to my wifes disability how ever every thing worked out just fine fo the short time I used it.

I recently ordered a complete hydraulic disc brake kit for my horse trailer, as I wanted to change out the worn out electric drum brakes with something better. I worked with Carla on getting all of the right parts to make this changeover. She was very helpful and made sure that I got all of the necessary parts on order. I received everything in one shipment and set out to install the brake kits on all four wheels.

I ran into a problem with the brake line kit that was supplied by HydraStar...they didn't include the brake lines and fittings for the second axle as was specified in my order, so I had to make a special run to my local auto parts house to get the lines and fitting at an additional cost. I placed a call to eTrailer to let them know what happened and they said that they would have a tech from HydraStar give me a call. NEVER GOT A CALL FROM THEM!!!!!! Anyway, the installation proceeded and all went smoothly after that. It took me two and a half days to do this entire installation myself and I am very happy with the results. I just got back from a 2000 mile trip with the trailer and everything worked perfectly. Thank you Carla and eTrailer for your help and providing good quality products.

by:

I changed out my electric drum brakes on my Montana fifth wheel with this hydraulic brake actuator and Kodiak discs rotor system . What a difference this new brake system has made. I can now lock down the trailer tires if needed and drive much more relaxed on the highway knowing I can stop on a dime.

by:

Have not installed items at this time, but service has been GREAT so far. Waiting for a few more parts.

working great

by:

Everything was very quick and arrived on time. Did get 2 damaged caliper fittings but customer service was awesome and is going to send me replacements. I would suggest that better packaging for the calipers.

by:

etrailer as always has what I need, ships fast, and product is "as advertised"!
A pleasure to talk to the tech's when I have questions and even go as far as calling manufacturer to verify equipment selections.
Keep up the GREAT work.

  • Installing Hydraulic Disc Brakes on a 5th Wheel Trailer
I can help you correctly run hydraulic lines on your trailer. Adding disc brakes is a great idea, but the reason you are having such difficulty finding a schematic is because hydraulic brakes are rarely installed on 5th wheel trailers and they are typically installation specific. I have made a diagram of a typical setup on a trailer for you to look at. In this diagram I have run the main line down the driver's side frame of the trailer so the shorter lines are needed to the driver's...

  • Is There Advantage to Using Hard Brake Lines or Flexible Brake Lines on Trailer
There really isn't an advantage to using hard brake lines over flexible ones. It really comes down to whichever will be easier for you to install. I would recommend the flexible brake line kit part # HS496-252 as it will be easier to install. While they lines are flexible they do not bulge or expand from brake pressure. This brake line setup would work really well with the Hydrastar actuator # HBA16 you mentioned as well as the Kodiak disc brake conversion kit you are going with.

  • Recommendation on Switching Vacuum Over Hydraulic Brakes to Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes
Since the braking power is still hydraulic, you should have no issues converting from a vacuum over hydraulic system to an electric over hydraulic (EOH) system. The electric over hydraulic actuator will take the place of the vacuum that pressurized the existing brakes. Now, since you have disc brakes already installed on your trailer, I recommend the HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes - 1,600 psi, # HBA16. The HydraStar actuator will allow you to apply the brakes...

  • Brake Line Kit Recommendation for Use with HydraStar Actuator part # HBA16
The HydraStar Actuator part # HBA16 that you referenced has a kit specifically designed for it that includes a 1/4 inch feed line. For that you'd want the HydraStar kit part # HS496-252 which comes with a 25 foot long feet line.

  • Can Kodiak Hydraulic Brake Line Kit # 24TA-BLKIT Handle 1,600 psi Brake Actuator
Yes, the Kodiak Hydraulic Brake Line Kit # HS496-252 that you referenced can handle 1,600 psi like what disc brakes are rated for. This will work great with the HydraStar 1,600 psi actuator part # HBA16 that you also referenced.

  • Is Larger Diameter Brake Line Required when Switching from Drum to Disc Trailer Brakes
You would only need to switch to a larger diameter brake line if the braking response was slow. You can go to a larger line if you wanted but it won't be necessary. We have 1/4 line kits such as # HS496-251 for single axle trailers, # HS496-252 for tandem axle trailers, or # HS496-253 for triple axle trailers.

  • Longest Brake Line Kit For A Tandem Axle Trailer
I took a look at what we have, and the only thing I was able to find was the Hydrastar Hydraulic Brake Line Kit # HS496-252, which measures 25' long. I also took a look at your 2019 Heartland Torque Travel Trailer Toy Hauler, and wanted to inform you that your brake line is only going from your farthest axle to the actuator or the coupler, not from the back of the trailer. At it's longest, I'd suspect that it is around 18', in which # 18TA-BLKIT would be perfect.

  • Do Trailer Brake Lines Need to Run On the Inside or Outside of a Trailer Frame
If you can route the brake lines of the part # HS496-252 on the inside of your trailer frame that's what I would recommend since it will give the lines the most protection as possible. Otherwise running them on the outside is fine too, but just try to set the lines up so that they are out of the way of moving parts.

  • Recommended Hydraulic Trailer Brake Lines and Hoses

  • How To Confirm Fit of HydraStar Hydraulic Brake Line Kit for 24 Trailers HS496-252
The HydraStar Hydraulic Brake Line Kit part # HS496-252 is a universal kit that is designed for tandem axle trailers who's length is no more than 24'. If your trailer meets both of these criteria then it should work just fine. In regards to kit components, it comes with everything needed so you won't have to worry about needing any extra unions etc. I have installed this kit myself and the rubber hoses make things very easy.

  • Triple Axle Brake Line Kit that Uses 1/4 inch Main Feed Line
Having the slightly larger main feed line of 1/4 inch is a a great idea for plumbing up your triple axle trailer. We have the HydraStar kit part # HS496-153 which is designed for that. This kit uses 1/4 for the main feed line to the first tee fitting and then from there reduces to the smaller 3/16 inch size but this kit was designed for heavier trailers like yours so it will still work really well and you won't have any issues with brake performance. I attached a diagram that shows how...

  • Troubleshooting HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Drum Brakes
I was unable to find an order number for you so I don't know the exact set up you used to install the HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Drum Brakes - 1,000 psi # HBA-10, but the issue doesn't seem to be the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller # 90885. The issue is almost certainly the wiring or brake lines you are using, and it is strongly recommend you use 10 gauge wire # 10-1-1 for the power lead of the actuator. If you would like to replace all of the lines from master cylinder to brakes, take a look at HydraStar Hydraulic Brake Line Kit, # HS496-252. I can help you install new hydraulic brake lines on the trailer. The Titan Zinc-Plated Actuator part # T4750620 is a surge brake actuator so you need hydraulic brake lines. The kit you need depends on how long the trailer is that you are installing the lines in and how many axles the trailer has. • How to Convert Trailer Drum Brakes Over to Disc Brakes
There is a good way to get the check valve out of your current actuator and save some money. What you will need to do is remove the large snap ring from the front of your actuator where the brake line attaches, pull the spring out, and at the end of the spring there will be a metal check valve. If you remove that check valve and reassemble the brake assembly without it you will be ready to use disc brakes. Or a less invasive way is to puncture the check valve, basically you would just...
