Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Integral Hub-and-Rotor Assemblies

The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage. Furthermore, machined disc brakes minimize the chance of contamination between the hub and rotor, resulting in excellent performance and long life.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Video Transcript for Kodiak Trailer Brakes K1HR78D Review

Today we're going take a look at the Kodiak dacromet disc brake assembly with the 13 inch hub and rotor, eight on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern, for 7,000 and 8,000 pound axles. Now this brake assembly will make it easy to upgrade from drum to disc brakes for better performance, gives you more consistent stopping even at highway speeds, and dramatically shorter stopping distances. Also, the maintenance costs are lower than for drum brakes because you have fewer moving parts you need to maintain, repair, or replace. Now these parts are all have a dacromet plating on them, provides superior corrosion resistance for fresh water or salt water use. And they do meet a 300 to 400 hour salt spray rating. The hub and rotor is one piece. It's all an integral hub and rotor assembly.

This will help minimize lateral run out, prevent warping, provides a nice smooth ride with the balance hub and rotor. Does use the industry standard bearings, races and seal, which is all included, and it also is vented, so it does prevent heat related damage with the vented design. It helps dissipate the heat better. The caliper itself as a cast iron caliper, it is self adjusting for smooth, equal braking. The cast iron construction does not flex like aluminum. It is a low drag design, so it does retract the piston on it further than other calipers for a cooler running brake.

And the piston is a stainless steel piston, which is 2-1/2 inches in diameter. And that's about 30% larger than other brands, so it'll give you more braking torque than the competition. Also comes with the high performance ceramic brake pads included in the caliper, you can see there. Does come with the two stainless steel caliper mounting bolts also. Now the mounting bracket, it's a ductile iron construction, provides strength and durability. It is a side support design, ensures that the load is placed on the whole bracket, not just the bolts.

Gives you extra embossing for additional thread contact to ensure a tight, secure mounting for the caliper guide bolts. And if you notice it is fits a five bolt brake flange mounting configuration. Now this kit will include everything laid out here on the table. It's one full brake assembly, the dacromet plated cast iron hub and rotor assembly, the dacromet plated cast iron caliper with the brake pads, and the two stainless steel caliper mounting bolts, one dacromet plating ductile iron caliper mounting bracket with the mounting hardware, the bearings, inner and outer bearings. Now the races are pre installed in the hub already. The oil seal, grease cap, and then eight of the 1/2 inch wheel lug nuts.

Now hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines are required for these brakes to be activated. We do sell those separately on our website. For the disc brakes, it does require a PSI rating of at least 1,500 psi. These parts are made in the USA.Specs on it, again, axle capacity is for 7,000 to 8,000 pound axles with the number 42 spindle. The wheel size you can use on this is 16 inches and larger. Bolt pattern is eight on 6-1/2 inches. Wheel stud diameter is half an inch. Rotor diameter is 13 inches. And again, we mentioned the brake mounting flange configuration of five bolts. But that should do it for the review on the Kodiak dacromet disc brake assembly with the 13 inch hub and rotor eight on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern for 7,000 and 8,000 pound axles.
