Disc Brakes
More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.
Integral Hub-and-Rotor Assemblies
The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage. Furthermore, machined disc brakes minimize the chance of contamination between the hub and rotor, resulting in excellent performance and long life.
Calipers
Kodiak calipers are constructed of stainless steel to prevent flexing and rust. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.
Mounting Brackets
Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant dacromet that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

These things are massive. They weight 11 lbs each side more than the ones they replace. Let's hope they last longer. They look well made. The instructions are so minimal as to be useless. I've assembled them by trial and lots of error. The person I spoke with at etrailer didn't know anything about them so I called Kodiak twice but no one answers or returns my call.
eTrailer service is good, the price was fair and shipping was fast.

Jenny N - 02/22/2022I did get them installed, as I said with a lot of trial and error. The instructions are very vague. It was not clear if the caliper bracket was installed first, then the hub rotor and then the caliper - which is what I did - or if the caliper was installed on the bracket, the hub rotor installed and then the bracket with caliper. That really did not make sense because it was very heavy. Also the bracket was stamped on one side outside but I wasnt sure if outside was away from the wheel towards the flange on the axle or the other way. I got it after installing it the wrong way. My remaining question is, when it comes time to do maintenance on the caliper or change the brake pads, is the caliper removed by taking off the caliper bolts? Sounds like a silly question but they had thread locker -blue- on them, which is supposed to be removable but my experience is that its really hard to get the loose. My previous brakes you had to take the bracket off to remove the caliper because the bolts were not removable.
-- Robert - 02/22/2022The way that you had installed the disc brakes was correct. To install the mounting brackets, the hub with the rotor, then the brake caliper. The outide on the mounting bracket means to install it facing out of the trailer. To answer the question on replacing the brake pads you will need to remove the caliper bolts and remove the caliper to change the disc pads. I have good video that shows how that you can see below.

I installed these as part of a disc brake retrofit for a tandem axle boat trailer that came from the factory without brakes. They bolted up fine to the factory axle flanges and bleeding the lines wasn’t any harder than any other brakes. These stop my truck better with an empty trailer than just the truck itself, and make it feel like my 4000-5000 lb loaded trailer isn’t even there. I’m very happy with the performance.
The rotors develop light surface rust on the contact surface when sitting for a while, but it burns off the first time you use the brakes again, similar to car brake rotors. I’ve only only use the trailer in fresh water since putting these brakes on.
Due to my wheel and tire size I had to use integrated hub rotors, so it was a good opportunity to also replace and freshly pack my bearings. If you don’t have the flange bolts, this set does not come with them so be sure to order them separately or plan to source from a local hardware store.

I have not installed them yet, when the weather becomes better I will. I have had Tie Down Disc brakes on my boat trailer. They do not last don't waste your money and your time. I have installed Tie Down Twice the first was the 1st gen then the vented G5s you will regret buying Tie Down. Kodiak from what I see is made better. We shall see.... I have no issue I know they will work..

Very pleased with the service and quality of product. Placed order on Monday and received on Friday enabling me to complete the installation over the weekend. All components were shipped and installation was very smooth. Time will tell how the Dacromet resists corrosion. I also ordered the rubber break line kit, replacing everything from the master cylinder back (tandem axles). Would have preferred to keep the oil bath hubs vs going back to grease and bearing buddies. This is my 4th trailer and the oil bath hubs were superior. No leaks/seal failure in 5 years of use.

The Kodiak brake kit was delivered intact. When installing it , i found that you can not install this brake set on a Road King aluminum I bean trailer. the calipers will hit the frame rails. no matter where i put the caliper, unless all the way on the bottom, which isnt good . So i will have to eat this purchase. Installed the tiedown stuff that wont last 2 years in salt water. I wish there was some information about the Kodiak system needing more clearence between the caliper and the frame.I rated it a good for its not the problem of the brake manufacturer, but the trailer manufacturer for spacing the wheels so close to the frame.

I just spoke to my contact at Kodiak about the clearance issue you have and he informed me that as long as your bleed the brakes with the bleeder valve pointed up you could then install the calipers in the 6:00 position and they would work just fine.
-- comment by: Jameson C - 05/23/2014I did sellinstall this brake set on a loadrite trailer and there was plenty of clearence, As stasted before , the road king trailer that i was trying to install this set of brakes on didnt have the clearence needed. The caliper would contact the frame as the suspetion would travel. As with all factory rep replies it allways seems to be the installers fault that it will not work. I bet that rep dosent have 40 years of repair service under his belt. After that coment on the 6 oclock position, yeah it would work but who wants the have the caliper on the bottom? Typical for a factory rep. Add and inch to the axel on each side and things would clear just fine.

Good quality parts, far superior to the Tie Down brakes I’m replacing. Would suggest improving packing, as shipper managed to throw it around enough that the boxes holding the rotors were basically destroyed. Outer box still held, but a few more miles of transit could have dinged up the rotors pretty well.

The stainless steel calipers look great. nice finish. Rotors are well made. One suggestion to the manufacture, chamfer the seal pocket, it would make installing the seal much easier.

I am having issue's with this product. When I mounting the first one I could not get the caliper mounted and later found out the mounting plate had a bolt hole that was not threaded from the factory. I talked to Caleb and in less than 2 days I had a replacement in my hand. Caleb spent a great deal of time making sure I got it and fast. Caleb helped me a lot with my install.
The other issue I am currently dealing with is the outside brake pad is rubbing the face of the rotor on both of the left side axles. I am going to call Kodiak today for suggestions. I will be buying all my stuff from Etrailer because IF you do have a issue one phone call to them and they will take care of it. THANK YOU Caleb

The brake pads and stainless calibers are doing great. However the dacromet coated integral rotorsdisc are not. The rotor portions are fine but the disc section where the pads wear off the coating are corroded. Had to turn them down but probably have to get stainless ones soon. This trailer is used quite a bit in salt water.

I've never changed brakes before and this was way easier than I thought it would be (the hardest part was getting the old rusted calipers off the trailer). I did end up needing to order new grease seals. I can't imagine why I would reuse old grease seals on new hubs, so I'd recommend that you order these with the package (and recommend that eTailer include them, or at least suggest that you should order them).

Recently I decided to put new hub/rotors and SS caliper on my trailer that has double torsion axels. I knew that the old ones were Kodiak 10" hubs and calipers. Found etrailer online and compared prices and shipping charges. Found them to the best. Online system was easy to use and placed the order. A few days later I received the parts. I had ordered a hub/rotor combination but one set was accidently shipped as a rotor only. It was an honest mistake since the park numbers were almost identical. Called them up and sent some photos and a few days later I had the new kit and I sent the other ones back with the USP shipping label that they sent me. Nice people and easy to work with. I will order my next trailer parts from them as well!

This product worked great. I'm so glad there is a kit that has all this together. The hoses are much higher quality than what I took off the trailer. I wish there had been an option to pay a little more to get stainless clamps as I launch in salt water 90% of the time. I will buy this kit again when the time comes.

These are a great upgrade from the rusty, frozen tie down brakes my trailer came with. The instructions are good and the product was fairly easy to install.
