Video Transcript for Performance Tool Trailer Brakes W80630 Review

Today, we're going to take a look at the Performance Tools universal offset brake adjustment spoon. This tool is for adjusting drum brakes, has the angles blades, one on each end for confined areas. This will adjust the star adjuster and the screw adjuster type brakes very quickly and easily. It's made of a drop forged steel and has a chrome plating to it to help resist corrosion. I just want to try to show you what it's used for. Here's a typical drum brake that has the star adjuster right at the bottom, so on the very back you will access to adjust that through the access hole right here. This tool is made to be able to go through that access hole and reach that adjustment gear and adjust your brakes.

Depending on how much clearance you have, you might have to use the 90 degree angle. It's part of this smaller angle one. That should do it for the review on the Performance Tools universal offset brake adjustment spoon.

A must have for drum brakes! Get one!

by:

Great tool. Works as promised and much better than trying to use screwdriver that doesn’t fit properly. Perfect brake adjusting tool.

by:

If you don't have one of these and have drum trailer brakes you need this.

by:

helped on adjustments.

by:

This is a MUST for adjusting trailer drum brakes. Makes it so much easier to reach in and set the brakes. Don't even have to remove the wheel to do it! The drums I have are Item #AKEBRK-6

by:

Truly makes installing the brake controller a snap... two snaps actually.

by:

Just the tool I needed.

by:

Great quality product

by:

Everything arrived but I was surprised that small parts weren't lost because one cardboard box (brake drum) had split open and the inner bag (lug nuts, etc) was ripped.. I would encourage the packers to make sure packages are sturdy enough for the trip.

by:

really is helpful in adjusting the brakes after new adjusters were installed.

by:

This order along with various orders on the past have been handled excellently, pricing is good and delivery is efficient.

I ordered 2 sets of trailer brakes on monday at maybe 530 and received them on thursday. And The fellow i dealt with emailed me to let me know he shipped them that night !!! You just can't beat service like that. These guys are good!

The brakes are ok except 1 of them fell apart inside. I had to open it up and remove the debri as it was making all kinds of raquet and i thought it was going to seize up. But no big deal i have 3 still working . Thanks Russ

Thanks for the follow up Russ, depending on which parts fell apart we do have some replacement items available for example the replacement shoe lining kit is available as part # AKBRKR-S-10, the replacement magnet is available as part # AKBRKR-M10, and we have 2 replacement spring options, part # AKBRKR-SP, and part # AKBRKR-AS-1012

Perfect and better than my screwdriver!

by:

My brakes were not working right on my trailer. So I bought new trailer brake kits from etrailer. The kits came fast and I installed them The only think I did not like is the wires from the magnets on the brakes are very thin wire. I wish they would have used thicker wire with a heavier coating.

by:

I have ordered multiple times from etrailer. Always fast shipping. Will continue to order parts and accessories as needed.

by:

I was extremely surprised with the positive response with their customer service, error on my part ordering the wrong part. Extremely quick delivery exchange (2days) living on the Canadian West Coast.
The brakes are doing their job great, easy installation using etrailer tutorial videos. Great company will use again.

by:

The only reason I do not give you 5 stars is because your web site. When internet ordering, it should instantly state when a part is out of stock. Even nicer would be expected restocking dates. The parts received were exactly what I ordered for my electric brake conversion from surge brakes at far less expense than reparing the internally rusted surge brake system. There was a plethora of information on your web site to assist me in ordering the correct parts for the conversion. Plus there were videos to see how to complete the conversion and how parts were installed and adjusted. Customer service was excellent.

by:

I have two trailers on which I adjust the brakes about once a year, and I find it worthwhile to spend a little bit on this tool. It works better than a screwdriver, but crusty brakes will fight you when adjusting through the backing plate regardless of the tool you use.

by:

must have gadget for drum brakes

by:

I was initially concerned about finding the right parts as the trailer was fairly old. etrailer had just what I needed. The website is so elegant. I was able to find the right parts quickly and with comparative options to make a final selection. The how-to videos are great. This made installation a little more comfortable. Especially when you do not perform this type of work every day. The parts were of high quality and are working as expected. I highly recommend etrailer for any of your trailer needs.

by:

Nice tool to have but not worth getting if you get the never adjust brakes. The design stops you from using this.

Needless to say it’s a tool a still keep in the trailer just in case

by:

I'm overhauling a 20 year old boat trailer and etrailer.com was the ONE and ONLY site on the internet that had both the necessary parts for this old trailer, but also instructional videos and hints on what to order and how to complete the job with a minimum amount of mistakes. This particular order (2 hyd. brake assemblies, hardware and brake tool) qualified for free shipping, but I didn't expect the above average delivery time also (2 days). I'm not finished with this project, but am sure I'll be doing more business with etrailer. Thanks for the great website and exceptional service.

So Disappointed!! This is a review of my order experience, not the product. I needed to replace the brake assemblies on my camper before we could go on vacation. I call to see how long it would take to receive and was told 2 days. I placed the order and received as told. I was about to be impressed until I opened the box. They not only sent the wrong brand, but also the wrong size. I called customer service and had to wait 45 minutes for someone answer. She agreed it was their mistake. I told her I only had two more days to get them on and still go on vacation. I asked for next day delivery. She was able to do that, but said it would ship that day and go 2nd day. The next day, the order had not shipped and the tracking number I was given doesn't even register on UPS. I don't when or if I will receive the correct product. Very disappointed that they would not step up and make it right.

by:

Brake assemblies were just the ticket to getting my cargo trailer brakes back to new working order. Shipping was great and fast. I needed them quick, as my old brakes had worn out and broke up. This caused damage to the internal works. A super way to replace you brakes and worn out pieces. I would urge anyone with internal brake problems to give these a try!!

by:

Brake back plates, shoes, seals, etc. were exact fit and very rapid change out in just a few minutes. Connections for brake magnets and of course cleaning took the most time. Adjusted brakes to Dexter instructions and worked perfect.

  • Troubleshooting Weak Electric Brakes on New R-Pod Trailer
It's certainly possible to replace the electric brakes on your newly purchased R-Pod trailer, but it's hard for me to know if this will resolve your issue, as it's still possible (and more likely) that there is something else going on that is causing the weak braking. You did mention checking the wiring and brake controller, along with the brake assemblies themselves for any grease or oil, but it sounds like they might not have been adjusted. When weak braking occurs, more times than not...

  • Troubleshooting Hydraulic Drum Brakes that are Running Too Hot
It definitely sounds like there was just an adjustment issue with the brake assemblies on your trailer. This is pretty typical, especially right after installing new brakes. We can likely also rule out bad bearings as the cause since they were recently inspected and repacked as well. The 160 degree temperature you are getting now is much closer to normal, although they might benefit from running a bit cooler. There is not really a "normal" temperature that brakes should be at after use,...

  • How Tight To Set Manual Adjust Trailer Electric Brakes
Sounds like you are asking about how tight to adjust your trailer's manual-adjust, electric, drum brakes. You will adjust the brakes using that wheel until there is a slight but constant drag of the shoe pads on the drum. I have included a link to a video and at about the 4:39 mark our installed begins adjusting the brakes. You can turn using a flat head screw driver or brake adjusting tool # W80630.

  • Troubleshooting Electric Manual Trailer Brake That Matches But Hums Without Actuating
It sounds like you may need to adjust your brakes to get them to fully engage. I recommend using a Brake Adjustment Spoon like Item # W80630. Remove the plug at the bottom of the backing plate. After removing the plug, you should see a star gear which is used to adjust the brake. Use a flat-head screwdriver or Item # W80630 to turn the star gear until it becomes difficult to turn the hub and drum. Rotate the wheel up which will press the brake shoe against the drum. • Troubleshooting One of the Trailer Wheels Locks Up When Applying the Brakes
Since, all the other wheels on the trailer seem to be in proper working order, we can assume that the brake controller is working correctly. Sounds like you might have a brake assembly that is out of adjustment. Using a Brake Adjustment Spoon # W80630, or a flat head screwdriver, you can adjust the star wheel that can be accessed at the back of the brake backing plate. At the 3:00 minute make of the attached video, our technician will explain how to adjust the trailer brakes. If the...

It sounds like either your brake controller is on a higher braking setting (most likely) or your brakes themselves might need some adjusting. If you need to adjust your brakes, you can use a tool like a Brake Adjustment Spoon, Item # W80630, or a flat blade screwdriver to adjust the setting of the star wheel. I have attached a video that should help and you would start around the 3-minute mark.

  • Troubleshooting Locked Up Trailer Brakes Even When Unhooked From Battery
If the brakes are locked up even when there is no power being delivered to the brakes, the issue is mechanical and not electrical. If you have a breakaway kit installed, the breakaway pin may be removed and causing the brakes to be applied. Make sure the breakaway pin is in all the way and not causing the issue. I have attached a drawing of the wiring for a breakaway kit installation. Check the brake assemblies out and look for any signs of debris or if any springs or other components...

  • Troubleshooting Electric Brakes on Trailer that Stopped Working
It sounds like you may just need to adjust the brake assemblies in question on your trailer. To adjust the brake shoes, you will access the brake adjuster from the back of the assembly. You will want to adjust it just until you can no longer turn the trailer wheels by hand, then back off about 10 clicks for the ideal placement. I have attached a video demonstration for you to check out. At the 4:35 mark in the video, you can watch how the brakes are adjusted. If this is not the issue,...

You can use a flat head screwdriver or we also carry an adjustment spoon, part # W80630. Have you tested for power all the way to the brake magnets? • How To Adjust Electric Brakes On Camping Trailer
To adjust the brakes, you will need to raise the trailer and secure it on adequate capacity jack stands. Check that the wheel and drum rotate freely. Do not lift or support trailer on any part of the axle or the suspension system. Remove the adjusting hole cover from the adjusting slot on the bottom of the brake backing plate. With a screwdriver or standard adjusting tool like part # W80630, rotate the starwheel of the adjuster assembly to expand the brake shoes. Adjust the brake shoes...

  • Direction of Rotation of Drum Brake Star Wheel
Drum brakes' star wheel adjusters have directional teeth that will let your adjustment spoon # W80630 (or flat-blade screwdriver) catch those teeth better in one direction than another. The direction that provides the better grip of the blade on the wheel is for tightening. As you look at the brake from the outside of the trailer rotating the star wheel upwards spreads the pads, making them tighter against the drum surface.

  • How are Electric Trailer Brakes Manually Adjusted
On electric drum brakes there is a star wheel at the bottoms of the assemblies that you can turn using a flat head screw driver or brake adjusting tool # W80630. Turning the wheel one way will bring the shoes closer in and turning it the other way pushes the shoes out more. You will adjust the brakes using that wheel until there is a slight but constant drag of the shoe pads on the drum. I have included a link to a video and at about the 4:39 mark our installer begins adjusting the brakes.

  • Troubleshooting New Brakes on 2004 Newmar Mountain Trailer that are Weak
Since you said the assemblies are brand new I can almost guarantee that the issue you are experiencing is just that your new assemblies aren't adjusted properly. I checked your order notes and I can't see any newer orders than one placed in 2011 but if you ordered self-adjusting brake assemblies what you'll want to do is apply the brakes with the manual override lever of your brake controller several times while at a slow, parking lot type speed and they will eventually tension themselves...

  • Do Electric Brakes Included With Dexter Axles Need To Be Adjusted
The brakes that are included with the Dexter axles will need to be adjusted when you install the axles. You will keep turning the wheel until the pads lightly, but consistently, drag on the drum.

  • Why Would One Wheel of Trailer with Self Adjusting Brakes Drag More than the Others
First thing I'd check is to see if the spindle nut is on too tight. If the brakes are tensioned properly and there's still more drag on one when than the other most likely somebody tightened the spindle nut too much. The spindle nut needs to be pretty loose actually and not torqued down. The hub is placed on the spindle, making sure the inner and outer bearings are correctly seated. The spindle nut is then run down until you start feeling resistance. At that point, spin the hub and check...

  • What Does the Brake Spoon # W80630 Do
The brake spoon part # W80630 that you referenced is designed to adjust the tightness of brake assemblies so that they operate as they should. It sounds like you may just need to adjust the tension on the brakes on the front axle. A tool like Brake Spoon # W80630, shown in the linked video, or a flat blade screwdriver can be used to rotate the star wheel adjuster which is under the magnet. The brake shown in the video is hydraulic but the adjustment star wheel and the process are the same for electric drum brakes. • Potential Causes for Excess Heat Build-Up in Hubs/Drum
Properly-adjusted trailer drum brakes should apply enough drum pressure to put some noticeable drag on the hub as you rotate the wheel by hand. You should hear and feel drag but still be able to rotate the tire. Self-adjusting brakes require an initial manual setting, after which they will automatically TIGHTEN as needed but they will NOT automatically loosen if the initial setting was too tight. Odds are your one brake was simply set too tight at the start. You can use a brake spoon tool...
