Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the Redarc Encapsulated Power Diode for Tow-Pro Brake Controllers

Jeff: Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at the REDARC Encapsulated Power Diode for the Tow-Pro Brake Controllers. Now this diode will prevent feedback to ensure correct operation of your REDARC Tow-Pro trailer brake controller and your vehicles brake lights. The diodes designed to fit in the trailer stop lamp feed to support the installation of the Tow-Pro Electric Brake Controller on vehicles inaudible 00:00:25 of the 12 volts may interfere with the vehicle system. So when this is installed correctly, this diode will ensure correct trailer braking and stop lamp operation on the vehicle brakes or the Tow-Pro manual overdrive issues. This is a totally encapsulated construction.

Has nice sealed connections. So when this is plugged in, you can see that it seals all weatherproof. Power draw on this is seven amps. Application voltage is 12 to 24 volts. But that should do it for the review on the REDARC Encapsulated Power Diode for the Tow-Pro Brake Controllers..

Awesome product! I installed this in my 2021 Subaru Outback Onyx XT, along with the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/Universal Wiring Harness - Item #RED52VR. This is an absolute requirement in order to tap into the third brake-light circuit so you have full brake function: Manual Braking and Adaptive Cruise Control System braking. Pretty simple install, only need to connect two wires, the Orange and one Red. I provided more details of my installation in my review of Item #RED52VR.

Continues to function flawlessly!

If you install the Redarc on a Toyota it may generate a “collision avoidance” error message when you press the button to manually brake the trailer because of 12v feedback. This diode, when installed inline with the brake trigger signal, will correct that and it works. Ideally this part would be mentioned or shown when ordering the Redarc as a needed item but it’s not. Not on the Redarc page or in several videos involving Toyota Highlanders. Regardless, if you get that message buy this part. It’s well made and sealed so it will withstand the elements.

by:

I could not find a installation video which would have made for better understanding and quicker install,

by:

Diode helped us fix the Pre-Collision System Malfunction error code which in turn disables the cruise control as well on our 2019 Toyota Highlander Limited Platinum AWD.

by:

Quality part. Looks like it would even hold up well outside the vehicle. Great way to protect the expensive modules in modern vehicles.

Still works great. No electrical issues in the truck.

by:

It works. The install of it was tight under the dash of my 2020 Subaru Outback with adaptive cruise control. I cut the brown wire with coming out of the brake pedal plunger, and connected the orange wire of the EPDK to it, and the EPDK red wire to the cut brown wire going into the wiring harness. (Of course the other red wire goes to the brake controller.)

by:

I am sure it is a quality product, but not sure I needed it. It was recommended in Q&A's, but my controller works fine without it and some say I did not need it. So maybe I wasted $xx ?

Thank you for your review. This prevents feedback on the brake signal wiring. Unless you are wiring a separate third brake light, no diodes are needed.

With all of the products that I have ordered, etrailer has never "fallen short" of being first rate.

  • Is The Redarc Encapsulated Power Diode # RED34FR Needed On a 2016 Toyota Highlander W/ Redarc Elite?
The Redarc Encapsulated Power Diode # RED34FR is only needed on vehicles with certain advanced safety systems like the Adaptive Cruise Control, Assisted Emergency Braking and Autonomous Emergency Braking. If your 2016 Toyota Highlander has these features the Diode will need to be installed into the harness for the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller # RED44FR. I have included an image with the wiring that will need to be connected.

  • Where to Find Stoplight Circuit for Install of Redarc EPDK Diode on 2020 Subaru Outback
The best place to find the stoplight circuit on a vehicle like your 2020 Subaru Outback is going to be at the brake pedal switch. You'll need to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test all of the wires till you find the circuit that only has voltage when pedal is pressed. This will be the circuit to install the Redarc Encapsulated Power Diode # RED34FR onto when you install the Redarc Tow Pro Liberty # RED24FR.

  • Brake Switch Signal Without Tapping into Factory Wiring On 2021 Toyota Highlander For Brake Control
We currently do not have any installation videos for the Redarc Encapsulated Power Diode # RED34FR being used to install the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR with the Harness # RED69FR and Panel # RED48FR for any vehicles or your 2021 Toyota Highlander. I have included an image of the wiring for the Diode below which shows you are simply connecting to a brake light signal wire to feed the diode. Another way we find very helpful to resolve not taping into the brake switch...

  • Is Encapsulated Power Diode Needed to Install Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty on a 2020 Subaru Forester
The Redarc Encapsulated Power Diode # RED34FR shouldn't be needed for installing the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR and Pigtail # RED69FR on your 2020 Subaru Forester. The answer page you're referring to didn't have us telling someone to install it, rather that person asked how it installs and our expert gave them insight on how to install it. Aside from that we haven't recommended the Power Diode for any other Subaru vehicles.

  • Troubleshooting Difficulty Calibrating The Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty
We have never encountered a case of a 4Runner needing a diode in order to use the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR. If you suspect voltage is low you could always go in and test with a volt meter. The Redarc Encapsulated Power Diode # RED34FR is generally only needed on vehicles with certain advanced safety systems like the Adaptive Cruise Control, Assisted Emergency Braking and Autonomous Emergency Braking. Since you are using the plug-and-play pigtail # RED49FR you should not need any...

  • Does a 2024 Toyota Highlander Need the Redarc Encapsulated Power Diode for a Brake Controller
Hey Danial, thanks for the follow up question! Your 2024 Toyota Highlander will just need the 7-Way Kit # ETBC7 along with the Curt Echo In-Line # C79DR. With this setup you won't be splicing into the stop light switch on your Highlander so even if your vehicle did need the Redarc Encapsulated Power Diode # RED34FR (which it doesn't), the Curt Echo In-Line doesn't tap into that function.

  • How Does Redarc Encapsulated Power Diode RED34FR Get Wired To 3rd Brake Light?
There sure is! The Redarc Encapsulated Power Diode for Tow-Pro Brake Controllers # RED34FR you were looking at gets wired as shown in the included diagram. One of the red wires goes to the red brake output wire on your trailer brake controller, the orange wire gets connected to the input wire going from the vehicle wiring to the third brake light, and the other red wire gets connected to the wire going to the third brake light. I included a video of the products mentioned for you to...

  • Where To Connect Red Wire Of Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty To 2016 Kia Sorento W/ Adaptive Cruise Control
I would be happy to help! You are correct that on vehicles like your 2016 Kia Sorento you will not want to get the brake light signal directly from the stop light switch. Picking up the signal there will only activate the trailer brakes when you press the brake pedal, and not when the adaptive cruise control you have applies the brakes. Instead to install the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR you were looking at you will need to route the red wire to the 3rd brake light of your Sorento...

  • Redarc Tow Pro Liberty Install 2019 Ford Ranger
Yes it will. According to Redarc, Ranger models equipped with the adaptive cruise control can be difficult to obtain a stop lamp signal from. The stop lamp switch will only get input from the driver, not the adaptive cruise. I'm told that instead of the stop lamp switch, the brake signal should be obtained from the CHMSL, (a/k/a the third brake lamp). Also, a diode like # RED34FR will prevent the brake signal from feeding back into the vehicle wiring.

  • Best Way to Wire the Redarc Brake Controller on 2020 Ford Ranger Without Tow Package
Thanks for the pictures you sent! It looks like you don't have the right plug under your dash which is due to not having the factory tow package on your 2020 Ford Ranger. That's ok, since there's still a solution to adding brake controller wiring to your truck. Ford USA offers the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR with their own wiring kit included so it's confirmed that this controller is compatible with the 2020 Ford Ranger. I talked with Redarc and they explained how to wire your Ranger...

  • Installing Redarc Tow-Pro Elite On 2022 Toyota Highlander
Hi Pete; the # RED44FR installation video doesn't actually show the typical connection to the brake light trigger using the red wire since they ran extra wire and routed it to the back. You can follow the video or you can identify the cold side of the stop light switch to connect the red wire. We don't know what the wire color is so you will have to use a tester # PTW2993 and find the wire that only has 12V power when the brake pedal is pressed. Your 4-way will function the same way as...
