Hi there heavy haulers. Today we're going to be taking a look at Reese's friction sway control ball mount bracket. This is available for either two inch hitches or one and a quarter inch hitches. This is just the bracket to mount onto your ball mount to allow you to mount the friction sway control pivot ball, that mounts on your vehicle side. If you need a friction sway control, you can purchase that in a kit that comes with everything you need to get it installed on your trailer. Sway can be caused by a lot of different things.
One of the most common things that causes sway is an improperly loaded trailer. So before you look at getting a sway control, I highly recommend that you check your tongue weight on your trailer and then ensure that you're putting about 10 to 15% of whatever the total weight is of your trailer on the tongue. So for example here, my trailer is just under 3,000 pounds. So ideally I would have around 300 pounds of tongue weight up here because that puts me between 10 and 15%. If you need to take your tongue weight, we have plenty of scales available here at etrailer.com. I'd highly recommend our own brand of tongue weight scale personally tested it.
And it's a very accurate scale. So you can verify your tongue weight first. Now let's say you did verify your tongue weight and everything is good. You're within that 10 to 15%, but you're still experiencing sway. Some of the other things that can cause that are heavy cross winds, especially if you've got a taller trailer that collects more of that wind or potholes. If you're on a road surface, it's got a lot of potholes that can cause the trailer to dip and it wants to move this way and then all of a sudden it's swaying back and forth.
And one of the things you want to remember is that if you do start to experience sway, you don't want to speed up you want to slow down. Speeding up it's just going to make it worse. And the last thing that can cause sway is an unexpected evasive maneuver. You go one way, you come back the other way. And if you over correct any of your trailers within, because of the momentum of the truck is going from left to right, once you get back straight again on the truck, the trailer may not want to go straight. It's going to continue to sway.
Friction sway control is going to help minimize that so that way the trailer's not going to just get out of control. It's going to gradually bring itself back due to that friction that's being applied there, helping keep the trailer going in the same line as your vehicle.Included with the kit you'll get the ball that mounts in the plate, the friction sway control as well as the ball and mounting plate on your trailer side. The reason the mounting plate is sold separately from the friction sway control is because the manufacturer doesn't know what kind of ball and ball mount you're going to be using to haul your trailer. Since there are two different plates available, there's a two inch and a one and a quarter inch. The manufacturer left the mounting option up to you so you can match yours properly. Additionally, if you tow your trailer with a couple of different vehicles and those have different size balls and ball mounts that you want to use on those, you can get the appropriate plate for that ball mount and be able to use your trailer with either along with your friction sway control. It also could just be a replacement plate for a rusted or damaged old one.It is a solid steel construction with a black powder coat finish to resist against rust. Our plate will have two holes in it. One for your friction sway control ball and it also have a hole that will allow you to pass your ball through the plate and your ball mount and get it clamped and tightened down. The opening on our two inch friction sway control mount here is going to be for one inch ball shanks. If you're using the one and a quarter inch mount, then the opening for your ball is going to be three quarter inches diameter. So if you're looking to get your friction sway control up and running, this is going to be a necessary part. Whether you're installing a new one on your trailer, or if you purchase a trailer that has an existing one on it, this will get you hooked up on your vehicle side.Curt also has ball mounts available with brackets pre welded on them to mount the friction sway control ball. And that's nice cause you really don't have to do anything. You just buy the ball mount, put your ball on it and you're ready to go. The thing that I don't like about that is you're restricted to using that ball mount. With this plate, we can put it on many different ball mounts. Like my truck here to get my trailer level, I needed a four inch drop. So I was able to choose the appropriate ball mount with drop, get my bracket on it and now I'm up and running and my trailer's level. With the Curt option, you're just stuck with what you get.To get it installed, if you already have an existing ball mount you'll need to remove your ball so we can get it in place. The place designed to work with a ball that has a one inch shank in diameter. And you also need to keep in mind that the length of the shaft needs to be long enough to go all the way through the plate, your ball mount, and then have the nut fully tightened on with some threads sticking through on the bottom. So you need to make sure you have a ball mount that has a long enough shank. I already tried doing this with a ball mount that had a two and a quarter inch shank, and that wasn't long enough. I'd recommend something that has at least a two and three quarter or maybe even a three inch shank. The one we're using here is a three and a half inch. So it's a little bit longer than we need, but we know that for sure it's going to give us plenty of threads to get it tightened down. You also want to keep in mind that the distance between the opening here is two and five eighths of an inch. So that way you can be sure that it fits over your ball mount. Because there are some ball mounts out there that are a little bit wider that this may not fit on. Now we've got all the measurements that we need and an idea of how long meet them. We'll set our plate on top of our ball mount like that, lining up the holes and then we'll take our ball and we're going to put it through those. So we'll take the nut off and the washer slide it down through, slide it down through on the bottom side, we'll place the lock washer and the nut. I recommend you use a vise to finish getting it tightened down. Most of your balls feature flat spots on them to be clamped in a vise. You'll then want to torque your ball to its specifications. Usually when you purchase a ball, there will be a tag on it with the specifications for it. The most common torque spec for a one inch diameter shank is 250 foot pounds, but you always want to verify with the manufacturer's literature before torquing it. You'll notice that our bracket here has a small hole. This hole is where you would install the ball that comes included with your friction sway control kit. Now, for me, I'm installing this on my ball mount here because I recently purchased a trailer that has a friction sway control on it, but I don't have the ball in for my ball mount to hook it up. So I only needed to purchase a replacement ball, which we have available here at etrailer.com and the bracket to get everything up and running. We'll take our ball, slide it through the hole, place the lock washer on it and then the nut. We can then move our ball over to the vise. Let put it like this, to get us the most surface area, holding our ball. And then we're going to tighten the ball into the vise to keep it from spinning. Well then torque the balls to the specifications found in your sway control instructions. If you no longer have the instructions for your sway control because you just purchase a trailer, kind of like I did, you can find the instruction links on the sway control website for the manufacturer, as well as on the product pages here on our website. With everything torqued down, we've got our ball mount assembled and everything is ready to go. So we're ready to put our ball mount into our trailer, hook up our trailer to the back of our truck and then get our sway control connected. With our plates installed hooking up our sway controls, nice and easy. We'll attach one end to the one on our trailer. And then on the other end, we'll hook it to the ball on our new plate. We can then tighten down our sway control and we're now ready to hit the trail. And that completes our look at Reese's friction sway control ball mount bracket.

Hey? for the price I couldn't hand fabricate, weld drill one of these , very nice product, it took all of 5 minutes to put together, now to get ( purchase) a sway control bar, in all! These hitch parts came early in the post, well packaged, well known brand , phone calls, e mail correspondence was exceptionally fantastic, staff, extremely knowledgeable, I highly recommend this business, reckon I will send in some photos at some time in the future, maybe professional video, as I am a photographer,

FAST SERVICE AND EASY. THANK YOU
This product works great for adding an additional ball mounted anti sway bar. I only wish it had another hole on the opposite side to add a second additional ball. Great product!
I would have given this purchase a 5 rating, but the down grade was based on customer service/shipping. I've ordered about 6 times from etrailer and customer service has always been great, this time it was just above average. I did not have a follow-up email on Monday after a weekend order, so I called. After a 30 minute hold I got to a live person. He followed up and I got the order on time. If I had not called I would not have gotten the my order on time even though it was an expedited order. At the end of the day I got the correct order when I needed, just had to put a little extra effort into it on my part. I'll certainly use them again.
Haven't traveled with it but did mount it. Have a concern that there is a gap on each side allowing it to turn under the ball ramming into ball mount. Will have to figure out how to lock it down.
I installed the sway bar on my trailer. It preformed good very happy with the way way to install . To it for a drive made adjustments my trailer sway was reduced to a minable and vibration disappeared. Will try it loaded at an another time.
At this point it looks very nice. I have not pulled the camping trailer the unit is designed to use as a stabilizer with the 1" ball.
I have found your representatives most courteous and helpful.

Needed to add sway control to stock trailer. This product solved the problem.
Plate will not fit on my receiver. I'll have to cut the plate to fit. Hole for ball is to small. I should have just made my own plate.
