Today, we're going to be taking a look at Reese's replacement ball for the friction sway control system. Now, if you're like me and you recently purchased a trailer and it had a friction sway control already on it, you may only need the bracket for your ball mount and the ball to get it all hooked up. With this replacement ball, all we have to purchase then is the ball in the bracket, and we're good to go.You can purchase the mounting plate here at etrailer.com. There's two different sizes available, one for two inch hitches and also one for one and a quarter inch hitches. Or if you did purchase a new friction sway control, it does come with the ball, but you only get one. So if you have multiple vehicles and ball mounts that you use to haul your trailer, you may want to consider purchasing another. For example, if you've got maybe an SUV that you pull your trailer with, or sometimes you use your truck and your truck sits higher, you may need a ball mount that has a drop on it. For my truck here, in order to tow my trailer level, I needed a ball mount with a four inch drop.
So I can purchase these components here to get a ball mount specifically set up for this vehicle to pull this trailer.Sway can be caused by a lot of different things. One of the most common things that causes sway is an improperly loaded trailer. So before you look at getting a sway control, I highly recommend that you check your tongue weight on your trailer and then ensure that you're putting about 10 to 15% of whatever the total weight is of your trailer on the tongue. So for example here, my trailer is just under 3000 pounds. So ideally I would have around 300 pounds of tongue weight up here, because that puts me between 10 and 15%. If you need to check your tongue weight, we have plenty of scales available here at etrailer.com.
I'd highly recommend our own brand of tongue weight scale. Personally tested it and it's a very accurate scale. So you can verify your tongue weight first. Now let's say you did verify your tongue weight and everything is good. You're within that 10 to 15%, but you're still experiencing sway. Some of the other things that can cause that are heavy cross winds, especially if you've got a taller trailer that collects more of that wind.
Or potholes. If you're on a road surface that's got a lot of potholes, that can cause the trailer to dip and it wants to move this way. And then all of a sudden it's swaying back and forth. And one of the things you want to remember is that if you do start to experience sway, you don't want to speed up. You want to slow down, speeding up is just going to make it worse. And the last thing that can cause sway is an unexpected evasive maneuver.
You go one way, you come back the other way. And if you overcorrect any, your trailer's whipping because the momentum of the truck is going from left to right. Once you get back straight again on the truck, the trailer may not want to go straight. It's going to continue to sway. Friction sway control is going to help minimize that so that way the trailer's not going to just get out of control. It's going to gradually bring itself back due to that friction that's being applied there, helping keep the trailer going in the same line as your vehicle. The ball is a durable chrome steel. So it's going to be resistant against corrosion. The ball is also the correct diameter to work with our friction sway control. So it simply slides on and pins into place. And this will allow our friction sway control to operate and pivot as it needs to, to go in and out and provide us with that anti-sway.To help minimize the wear on the socket and ball, you can grease your ball here and that'll also help protect the chrome finish. Now, if you're like me and you just purchased a trailer that already has a friction sway control on the trailer, but you don't have the ball mount side, you need to purchase a bracket and install on your ball mount, and then you can take your replacement ball and install it onto that mount. Take the ball, remove the lock washer and nut, slide the ball in from top down, we've got our ball on upside down so it looks like the opposite there. Place the lock washer on it and then the nut. We can then move our ball over to the vice like this to get us the most surface area holding our ball. And then we're going to tighten the ball into the vice to keep it from spinning. We'll then torque the ball to the specifications found in your sway control instructions. If you no longer have the instructions for your sway control, because you just purchased a trailer, kind of like I did, you can find the instruction links on the sway control website for the manufacturer, as well as on the product pages here on our website. With everything torqued down, we've got our ball mount assembled and everything is ready to go. So we're ready to put our ball mount into our trailer, hook up our trailer to the back of our truck and then get our sway control connected. With our ball installed, hooking up our sway control is nice and easy. We'll attach one end to the one on our trailer. And then on the other end, we'll hook it to the new ball. We can then tighten down our sway control and we're now ready to hit the trail. And that completes our look at Reese's replacement ball for the friction sway control system.

Replacement ball works with Reese friction-style sway-control system by attaching to the weight-distribution head or sway-control bracket on ball mount.product arrived in good time, the tracking was spot on.
the plate did arrive with a couple of small chips in it but it fit the hitch perfectly and looks like it will work very well.
Solid and stable, fits the ball mount perfectly. Customer service was very helpful pre-sale and this is exactly what I needed.
I added the Reese friction sway control system to my single axle 7 X 14 foot motorcycle trailer. I then pulled it over 3,000 miles with my Honda Goldwing on the trailer. The trailer never swayed once, even with some rapid lane changes. This system works on my R.V. an it works on my motorcycle trailer. Glad I had it. The service from etrailer was as good as it gets.
installing parts together very easy.

I have had nothing but good experiences with etrailer. Quick shipments, great products, competitive prices. Their package tracking system is simple and better than any out there.
Ordered to use with drop hitch. Much easier than lifting large hitch with load levelers which I don't use.
Ball is for the sway bar hitch. Mounted easily. Haven’t used it well, but seems like it’s going to work as expected.
I have placed several orders with the folks here at etrailer.com. I've always had great service with very good product choice at competitive prices. I will continue to use them.
Easy installation and works as described.
Had a slight slip with order, but after a 30 minute hold to find out what was going on with my order it got corrected. Received the correct item when I needed it, just had to put in some extra time on my end. I'll use them again. I've ordered about 6 times from etrailer and this is the first mishap and it was a small one.
Just what I needed in order to use the sway control. Somehow the original was among the missing, a quick online search found what I needed. Fast shipping too.
