Roadmaster Accessories and Parts - RM-766

  • Tow Bar Wiring
  • Auto Battery Disconnect
  • Roadmaster

Conveniently disconnect the battery of your vehicle so you can flat tow it behind your RV per manufacturer instructions. Provides a charge for the breakaway switch and other accessories without draining the battery. For gas engine vehicles only.

Features:

  • Disconnects your battery with the flip of a switch so that your vehicle can be towed behind your RV
  • Eliminates inconvenience and the potential danger of pulling your battery cable
  • Provides a positive current source for the breakaway switch and other accessories without draining the battery
  • Operates with included switch
  • Includes a corrosion-resistant, marine-grade solenoid with 200-amp constant duty and 600-amp surge
    • Comes pre-assembled for easy installation

Specs:

  • Application: only for vehicles that require the battery disconnected for flat towing - consult your owner's manual
    • Works with almost any 12V battery
    • For gas engine vehicles only

Notes:

  • Not for use with diesel engine vehicles; due to the high compression ratio of diesels, the engine can surge up to 10 times that of a gasoline engine at start up and can cause the solenoid to fail.
  • Disconnecting the battery, whether manually or with the Roadmaster automatic disconnect, will affect your vehicle's electronics. You will need to reset various electrical components in your vehicle following use of this product.
  • A charge line kit (RM-156-25 - sold separately) is recommended if you have a braking system that is using power from the towed vehicle's battery while it is disconnected.

Fairly easy install. Routing the wiring is the most time consuming part. I would've liked to have had heat shrink terminals sent instead of just crimp terminals but overall its a great product so far!

(Also, I would recommend using a brown wire to link the lighting together in the rear as opposed to the white wire that is recommended in the instructional video, to keep everything clear for anyone who may work on it in the future)

by:

I had a little difficulty finding a good location for the solenoid, but finally found a spot on the radiator bulkhead. Since the photo was taken, I have added silicone boots over all of the solenoid connections.

by:

This was very easy to install on my 2022 GMC Canyon. I installed the button on the side of the dash, between the driver door and dash side. This way it is hidden out of view. I did the installation this way to avoid any modification to the lower dash support panel.

by:

The first one was damaged in shipping and they sent a new one out as soon as I called at no cost to me! Great customer service! If you follow the directions it’s a fairly simple installation. It works great. One note of caution the actual plug on the disconnect buttons can be inserted two ways but will only work one way.

by:

The battery disconnect works flawlessly and makes hooking up the towed vehicle so simple. Highly recommend!

Battery disconnect was bad. Waiting on replacement for 5 days now.

I checked with Roadmaster and I know that they are working on a replacement for you.

by:

Overall an easy 5 star rating. I read the instructions multiple times and still managed to hook up the cables backwards. Switched them and everything works fine. I really appreciated everything that you would possibly need being included - instructions said to bolt the unit in place but it worked out better for me to use the INCLUDED self tapping metal screws. Shrink wrap, protective cable looms, zip ties - you name it and it's in the box.

I installed this in my 2022 Chevy Colorado which requires the battery to be disconnected before flat towing.

by:

The battery disconnect installation instructions were clear and the installation went well in my 2018 Chevrolet Colorado ... in spite of the kit missing a few pieces like a second star washer for connecting the two battery cables and the second piece of protective tubing. I covered the exposed energized solenoid terminals with electrical tape to prevent an potential inadvertent short in the future when working under the hood. Works as designed so far.

I towed the Colorado from Maine to Arizona last winter and the battery disconnect worked well for the entire trip. It made preparing the truck for towing and driving very easy!

by:

I received the Roadmaster remote battery disconnect in a timely manner and had it installed in my 2016 Chevy Colorado by a local RV dealer. I used it for the first time this week and it worked like a charm. I didn't lose any of my preset radio stations or any other data that I know of. Pushing a button on the dash is a lot easier than disconnecting and reconnecting battery cables.

Still working just fine.

by:

The RM-766 is a solid piece of hardware and comes with absolutely everything required for the install, right down to the "Tow" and "Drive" stickers for the switch. I use it to disconnect the battery in my 2016 Ford Edge 3.5L AWD, to help make it flat towable behind my RV. It works great and I do not have to open the hood and mess with battery cables while travelling. I like it.

There have been absolutely zero problems with this switch so far. Works like a charm.

by:

This product works great for our 2018 Ford Explorer. It works perfectly for our application and allows us to easily disconnect the vehicle battery when we are preparing to tow the Explorer.

by:

Excellent product. Good instructions. Works perfectly after a full year.

by:

I have a 2014 Silverado that I wanted to tow with my RV. In order to tow GM calls for the battery to be disconnected. This was the only product that I fond that would do what I wanted. It is slightly over priced in my opinion but it does the job. I have attached it to my aftermarket air box and ran the switch under the hood release. This way I can use the remote to unlock the doors when I am ready to unhook.

by:

works great and the instructions were easy to follow

by:

I ordered a complete set up for flat towing my chevy truck you guys were so helpful with all the parts and your tech service was excellent as well,thank-you so much

by:

Not installed yet but this is a integral part of my plans for this fall camping season and getting it on time adds to the optimism for a great season this year

Easy to install. My wife gets our tow vehicle ready to roll. She would not disconnect the battery cable. Now all it takes is a flip of the switch! Happy with this battery disconnect product.

  • Will Roadmaster Battery Disconnect Fit 2019 GMC Sierra
It looks like the fuse block installs directly on top of the battery for your 2019 GMC Sierra but there still should be a terminal that the positive post of the battery connects to whether it is directly to the positive post or a different location in the fuse block. I reached out to my contact at Roadmaster who confirmed that the Automatic Battery Disconnect # RM-766 will fit and suggested that you have your mechanics inspect the fuse block for a place where there is a terminal.

  • Can Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect RM-766 Be Used On 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Being Flat Towed?
I reached out to my contact at Roadmaster, and the Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect with Switch for Towed Vehicle w/ Supplemental Braking System # RM-766 can only be used on the positive terminal of the battery as that is what the polarity of the solenoid is designed for. My contact mentioned that nearly every owner's manual mentions disconnecting the negative terminal, but using their disconnect and disconnecting the positive terminal accomplishes the same thing. The # RM-766 is the correct part to disconnect the battery on your 2015 Ford Edge and I do recommend this part for an easy way to protect your vehicle without needing to move wires each time. This disconnect makes it as easy as a flip of the switch on your dash to make your vehicle drivable or towable. This also will put a maintenance charge on the battery too as you drive. Ford states to disconnect the negative side so that's what we recommend sticking with. You should verify this with...

  • Will the Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect Fit a 2013 Honda Fit Sport
Yes, the Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect with Switch part # RM-766 will fit your 2013 Honda Fit Sport. The reason you do not see it listed as a fit is because the owner's manual does not specify that the battery needs to be disconnected while in tow. However, the battery disconnect has a very universal design and I see no reason as to why it wouldn't work for you. I have attached a sample install video.

  • Installing Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect with Switch RM-766 on 2018 GMC Sierra 1500
According to Roadmaster, the reason GM says that the negative side of the battery must be disconnected is a standard shop procedure. If you use hand tools (wrench) and start by removing the clamp on the positive side of the battery, then you might accidentally touch the wrench to a grounded component (frame, engine block, etc) on the truck and create a short circuit. Sparks will fly and the battery could be damaged. However, with the Roadmaster battery disconnect system, there are no such...

I reached out to my contact at Roadmaster because I have not heard of this particular issue happening before with the Automatic Battery Disconnect # RM-766. • Why Does Battery of 2017 Ford Focus Need to be Disconnected to Flat Tow
The reason a vehicle has to have the battery disconnected when being flat towed like with your Ford Focus is that the ignition has to be in a specific position for the steering wheel to unlock which turns on several circuits which would drain the battery of the tow vehicle if it was left on. So the solution is to disconnect the battery so that you can unlock the steering wheel without draining it. That what's nice about the Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect # RM-766 is that it does...
