Video Transcript for Review of Roadmaster Tow Bar Braking Systems - BrakeMaster BrakeAway Kit - RM-8600

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff for etrailer.com. Today, we'd take a look at this Roadmaster BrakeAway kit, for the Brakemaster Supplemental Braking Systems. Now, this will add a little extra security to your towing experience. With the installation of this BrakeAway kit to your tow vehicle. This BrakeAway kit worked with the Roadmaster's Brakemaster System.

To ensure that your tow vehicle comes to a controlled stop should it ever separate from your motorhome. Basically, uses the air pressure in this air cylinder, to apply the brakes during a breakaway. Now, this kit will include everything I laid out here on the table. Comes with this air reservoir, the air line tubing. The rubber mounting clamps, to hold this cylinder in place.

The BrakeAway switch itself. The BrakeAway cable, and all the installation hardware you need to install it, with a nice set of instructions. How does this install in your tow vehicle The BrakeAway switch right here, is what is installed to the front of the tow vehicle. With this BrakeAway cable, being attached to the pin right here. And then, the other end goes to the motor home.

The air cylinder is mounted in the engine apartment, and supplies air to the tow vehicle's brake pedal for application of brakes. So basically, what happens if your tow vehicle would come detached from your motorhome, the cable, that was connected to your motorhome into this pin, it will pull that pin out of the switch, which will then activate the air pressure in this cylinder. To apply the brakes to the brake pedal in your tow vehicle. Now, this BrakeAway kit does come standard in the Roadmaster BrakeMaster kits Part # RM - 9060 and Part # RM - 9160. Both of those kits we do sell separately on our website.

This parts are made in the USA, but that should do it for the review on the Roadmaster BrakeAway kit, for the BrakeMaster Supplemental Braking Systems..

  • Cylinder Dimensions of Breakaway Kit for Roadmaster BrakeMaster
For the Roadmaster Brakeaway Kit for BrakeMaster # RM-8600 the length is 12" inch and at the widest point where the mac valve is located is 5" inches and the cylinder is 2 1/2" diameter. We have a similar kit designed for use with motorhomes that have air brakes with the Demco SBS Air Force One part # SM99243.

  • Can BrakeMaster Breakaway Kit be Easily Removed from One Vehicle to Another Vehicle
Whether you have the Roadmaster BrakeMaster Braking System for RVs with Hydraulic Brakes # RM-9060 or the Roadmaster BrakeMaster System for RVs w Air or Air Over Hydraulic Brakes # RM-9160 you need to keep your breakaway system install on the Jeep Wrangler if you plan on still flat towing that vehicle. I reached out to my contact at Roadmaster who said that the breakaway kit is pressurized and so it needs to stay in a secured location and shouldn't be mounted on the air cylinder. If you...

  • Is a Supplemental Braking System and Breakaway Required for Flat Towing in the United States
Yes, pretty much all states (with the exception of Missouri for some reason) and Canadian provinces require that a towed vehicle have a supplemental braking system and most all supplemental braking systems come with a breakaway unit. The most economical is the BrakeMaster # RM-9160 which works with RVs that have air brakes or air over hydraulic braking systems. Otherwise I recommend the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251. In either case these are proportional systems that apply the same amount...

  • Does Reservoir of RoadMaster BrakeAway Kit for BrakeMaster Have Specific Mounting Location
It is definitely a smart idea to use the BrakeAway Kit # RM-8600 with your Roadmaster BrakeMaster although there is not necessarily a recommended spot we can offer to install the reservoir in a 2016 Ford C-Max. We have not had a chance to install this specific part in this specific vehicle, but I took a look at the owner's manual and since the air lines do need to be two feet away from a heat source like the engine, your best bet is off to the right (if you are facing the front of the car)....

We have several replacement parts that are compatible with the Roadmaster Brakemaster Systems, like # RM-9160. If you look in the parts break down in the included instructions link, you can see the parts in the Brakemaster system. The RM-9160 did not come with a compressor, but the RM-9060 did. It can be obtained in the RoadMaster BrakeMaster Second RV Kit for Hydraulic Brakes, # RM-98300. The Brakemaster # RM-9160 had a break away kit that included some parts that looked like an air tank...

  • Supplemental Braking System That Operates Off of Motorhome Air Brakes
It sounds like you are describing the Roadmaster BrakeMaster Braking System for RVs w/ Air or Air Over Hydraulic Brakes # RM-9060. It operates the brakes in your towed vehicle proportionally with the air brakes from your RV. It will press the brake pedal at the same time and with the same intensity as you do in your RV. It also comes with an LED display that mounts in your motorhome so you know exactly when the brake pedal on your towed vehicle is being pressed. You will need to use a...

  • BreakAway Kit for RoadMaster BrakeMaster 9000 System
Certain models of the Brakemaster 9000 Series included a break away system. If there is not one with the unit you purchased, it will need to be added separately. I recommend the RoadMaster BrakeAway Kit # RM-8600. This kit is designed to work with the BrakeMaster supplemental braking system and will work to bring your towed vehicle to a stop in the event of a separation.

  • Does a Vehicle Being Flat Towed Need a Breakaway System
When flat towing a vehicle the supplemental braking system being used will have a specific breakaway switch that goes with it. Supplemental braking is required by law in most states so if you are not using one you will want to look into getting one. The breakaway switches will not work with vehicle brakes directly because they are hydraulic and the switches work with electric systems. If you have a braking system, let me know which one it is and I can explain how a breakaway system gets...

  • Roadmaster BrakeMaster Will Not Release After The Break Away Pin Was Pulled Out
From what you are describing, you have one or two things that could be going on, but odds are it is the switch that is causing the issue. One way to test this will be to connect the 2 wires in the back of the actual switch. This will complete the circuit, which the pull pin should be doing, and will tell you immediately if it is the issue. If the brakes are now working properly, you will need to replace it with the Replacement Breakaway Switch # RM-650898. The removal of the pull pin can...

We do have the 3-Way Mac valve solenoid for the BrakeMaster braking systems which does sound like the issue. It is # RM-450420. For the switch you can use any breakaway switch such as # HM20010 as an example because all it does is complete a circuit once the pin is pulled.

  • What Would Cause Roadmaster Brakemaster Kit to Drain Vehicle Battery
The problem is definitely the breakaway pin being pulled out. When that's pulled it allows current to pass through it to push the brakes. Have you tried replacing that to see if the problem persists or goes away? Your fuse holder and fuse seem to be in good working order and would not need to be replaced.
