Video Transcript for Roadmaster Even Brake 2nd Vehicle Kit Installation - 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Hey, everyone Shane here with etrailer.com. Today I have a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We're gonna walk through how to install an Even Brake 2nd vehicle kit. The second vehicle kit is gonna be designed, so that if you have the even brake already, you already have and even brake and you're planning on towing a second vehicle within your family. You could even brake second vehicle kit allows you to use that main breaking system in each of the vehicles. One thing to keep in mind is depending on which model even brake you have will depend on the kit or the second vehicle kit that you would need.

There's going to be two kits. If you're even brake has a black wire, it's going to be, it's going to need one kit. If your even brake has a blue wire, it's gonna need a different kit. So make sure when you're hooking it up, look at the serial number that's on your even brake setup and use that serial number to get the proper kit for your second vehicle. As far as the installation process, pretty simple and straightforward.

It is gonna require for this vehicle, it is going to require a 12 volt outlet, for the braking system, because for the 2013 Grand Cherokee does require the battery to be shut off, which shuts off all power to any 12 volt outlets that are currently on the vehicle. You can find those here at etrailer. The second vehicle kit is gonna come with your breakaway switch and your tether as well as the cable that go from your breakaway switch inside to the transmitter. Keep in mind, running the wire from the breakaway switch inside the vehicle is not really a good way to do it. There's not really...

Grommets or factory wiring that are easy to get to. So, I found the easiest way to do it is on the passenger side. If you pull down the cardboard panel, right up in the corner, you'll see the power wire coming from the battery outside to the jumpstart post that's on, on the passenger side, under the hood. Right above it is all open, drill a small hole. And that's where you can feed your wires through.

Now we've gone over some of the features. Let's walk through how we got it installed. Start your installation. As I mentioned earlier, it's a good idea to have the fascia removed. It's gonna make it a lot easier or do it while you're installing your base plate. Your ICX transmitter is gonna be have to be mounted on the driver's side, so that the cable coming off of your braking system can plug into it. The green wire that's coming from your stoplight switch is gonna plug into the male spade connector and number one. So if you look on the opposite side where you have the red or the power and a ground wire, there's going to be a male spade connector there. The green wire coming off that is going to have to plug that again, power and ground. I routed these straight underneath the dash here, the center console, because my battery is underneath my passenger seat. Ran them underneath the carpet, and then added a ring terminal and then mounted them on the positive side of my post. And then I grounded the ground wire to the side of the, the battery compartment with a self tapping screw. Breakaway switches here. It's gonna come with the mounting hardware, your base plate, it's gonna have a bracket that you're gonna install during the base plate installation. That gives you a hole to mount your breakaway switch. And then all you have to do is run your cable. The cable that was inside is one piece, that has two, a plug on each end. One end is gonna plug into your breakaway switch. The other end is gonna plug into your transmitter. How I ran mine was from here, this factory wiring on our bumper beam, straight across. I zip tied it all the way here, went straight up behind my, past your head light, to here. And then inside the vehicle. You have, the power wire that runs right up to here, right up above it I drilled a small hole and I cut one of the plugs off, left a little bit of length, cut the end of the plug off. So that I only had to drill a small enough hole, or a big enough hole to get the wire through. And then I re-spliced the plug onto the end. Very simple it's going to have black and white wire in it, just connect the two back together once you're, once you've got your wire through. Now that we're in. All we have to do is mount the unit, up underneath the dash. We're gonna have a wire that we need to route from a brake light switch over to hook into it. And then your power and ground. Your kit is gonna come with a brake light relay. However, on this vehicle, we cannot use the relay because you can't tap into the factory brake wire. So we had to put a stoplight switch on it. A Stoplight switch is gonna have two wires coming off of it. It's gonna come with a green wire and a red wire to attach to one of those two wires. A red wire is gonna be full power. Green wire is going to be routed over to wherever you mount this. And you're gonna add a spade connector and it's gonna plug in right there. The other two wires on this unit, are gonna be your power and ground. This is gonna be for your breakaway switch. We can go ahead and plug in our breakaway switch. Just like that. We're probably run some tape around that just to make sure that it doesn't come disconnected. And then because our battery is underneath our passenger seat, I went ahead and extended my red wire and my white wire, because what I'm going to do is I'm going to route the wires underneath the carpet, along the inside edge and then over to the battery. Once we get to the battery, we'll have a fuse, fuse holder, add onto the positive side of the battery, and then basically put everything back together. We're gonna go ahead and extend my white wire as well, as I mentioned, I got my wires running underneath the carpet to my battery compartment here. And the way I did it, is I just used an airline tube that I had laying around. You can use wire hanger, anything that I'll go from here down into the box. I cut my white wire down, added the ring terminal. I'm just gonna take a self tapper and go right into the side of the box, in the sidewall and mount my ground. Added my fuse holder to the end of my red wire, ring terminal on the end, we wanna make sure that our fuse is not in the holder. When we attach it to the positive side of the battery, once we get it attached, we can go ahead and insert our fuses and make sure it's turning on. Once you have everything hooked up in the Jeep. You're gonna take your braking system, your even brake braking system, and it's going to have to be programmed to the new transmitter. Those instructions should be in your manual for your braking system. Next, we're gonna test out our system with our transmitter. I have my monitor for my motor home plugged in here. I don't have the pattern, the power completely disconnected here in the vehicle, just so I can test it out and make sure it's working together. There are blue wire coming from our braking system, plugged into the port on the bottom of the transmitter. We'll take our 12 volt plug for the system. We'll plug it into 12 volt outlet. We're gonna hit the test button. And what our system is doing is actually building up air pressure inside of the unit. You can see we've got a green light on our monitor for a motor home, it says testing is good, system is ready. We're all set up. Once you have all that done, you're ready to go. To look at and installation on the Even Brake 2nd Vehicle kit on a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee..

The written instructions were pretty good. I also used the 21 minute video on the etrailer site and it was great. Took me about 5 hours. I used a electrical knock out to place the two holes, 1 1/4", in the left and right frames. I. Really pleased with how things turned out.

by:

Hooked up pretty easy. I have a 17 F150 and i already had a Hopkins brake light relay installed so didn't need to splice into the wiring like the directions had on here. Little confusing on the brake pedal wiring needing to hook into the ICX transmitter. I did it but I don't think it did anything in my install. I also ran a power wire all the way to the battery rather than fiddling with the fuse tap.

It has worked without failure for the several times I have used it

Works great

by:

This wired into my Mini Cooper easily enough. The Breakaway Switch works as it should, however the brake assist does not work as the brakes in the motorhome are applied. Apparently the brake assist works from the "powered" brake switch relay and the switch in the Mini is not powered without the key on. I do not have brake lights or turn signals from the Mini either. I use remote magnet lights for turn and brake lights. I suppose that I could figure out how to make this work but with a 2.500 pound car it seems that I have enough brake power in the motorhome without the assist of the brakes in the Mini.

A year now. Got to use it ony one time But, everything great so far.

by:

The same product offered other places but at a lower price than most. It was slightly higher than the lowest price I found but with free shipping it beat everyone else by far. It arrived when stated. Communication between e-trailer and me was good. The instructions that came with the 2nd car kit was confusing but called Roadmaster direct and was helped to get the install done correctly. The product is of high quality. Good Job.

by:

Works great to flat tow our wrangler using the the d- ring mounts

great kit, has everything needed to install an even brake unit on my 2012 Jeep Liberty. The etrailer install video was very helpful

by:

A good kit but overpriced. I would like to see the remote included, the full kit for a new setup is way over priced as well.

by:

I have not installed product as of yet but I am sure it will be great. I have purchased from etrailer before and have never been not satisfied. Keep up the good work.
Merry Christmas and GOD Bless.

by:

Just received and not yet installed. Instructions ok, but some of the wiring and connections are not included, a manufacturing deficiency, not etrailers. Also, mfg web site had very little info for my model of auto for locating brake switch wires. Have to find it on my own.

by:

This was fantastic. Everything I needed to wire factory lights on my Jeep to the trailer plug on my RV. Quality products at a good price and prompt delivery. NICE!

by:

Well packaged product for shipment. Arrived on time and was sold by etrailer at a good price.

by:

Product was spot on ..no instructions on brake light relay switch...had to download it from roadmaster ..etrailer shipped fast but used surepost but it was free.. also etrailer has some good videos of install.

by:

The order went smooth. Said they would ship asap. Said if all goes right I'll have my order Monday. Low and behold all went so right I got stuff the Saturday before. Thanks for the help and service. Great as always. Kelly R

by:

In the end it is 5 stars but I gave it 4 stars because a cable was missing. However, eTrailer instantly replaced it so I'm completely satisfied and the cable works fine.

by:

Always excellent customer service and product Information, i.e. written instructions and how to videos. I have ordered multiple times and products, and their service is always excellent.

by:

Called and spoke to a representative and got everything I needed to set up my GMC Acadia for dingy towing. Great knowledgeable staff. I always can count on them.

by:

Very easy install on my 1998 Jeep Wrangler. No issues at all

by:

Will follow up if any issues with install (but I doubt there will be). Quick delivery, excellent help from William B. Still waiting on some products to arrive, which I was expecting thanks to the great service I already mentioned. Product came well packaged with instructions and follow up email containing more helpful information. Recommend this company.
