Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2001 BMW X5

Today on this 2001 BMW X5 we are going to install part number 119190. We are also going to use part number 118151 and that is going to be the install kit. The first step is to get inside the vehicle because that is where the wiring harness is and basically what we are going to do next is remove the interior panel before we can get to the wiring itself. We are going to take out the two side panels. The first thing we are going to do is find a wire harness that actually goes directly into the tail light and there is a socket that goes into it so disconnect that, there is a little tab right in the middle. 00:35

The first thing we will do is test for the functions of the wire. We are going to do one circuit at a time. First off we will start with the running light circuit and we are going to test on the inside of the plug and we will see which color does what. It looks like it is going to be the gray and purple wire so we are going to take our running light wire from the modulite which will be brown and we are going to connect that to the wire. We will be using the quick splice to do that with and that will be part number 564. 01:05

We will move on to the next circuit. The left turn looks like a green and blue wire so the left turn for the module is going to be yellow and we will hook it up the same way we did before. Next we will look for the stop light wire. Off, on, off. It looks like the brake signal is going to be brown and black. Our stop light wire on the module is going to be red. Reinstall the wire harness back into the tail light and take the white wire and ground it to the body. Use a ring terminal to do that with. Next we will deal with the green wire and that is going to go to the right turn signal so take the green wire and route it over to the right side of the vehicle along the factory wire harness. We are looking at the passenger side and disconnect the tail light harness. Just like before we will test for the right turn signal. The right turn looks like the blue and brown wire. We can reinstall the wiring back into the tail light. Back over on the driver side of the vehicle we will hook up the black wire coming out of the modulite and basically we are going to take our wire from the 118151 kit and we are going to connect the two together and the black wire is going to be ran to the battery. Leave that wire alone for now and lets mount our module up somewhere inside the vehicle. There is a nice spot right here and they do not come with the kit but we will use a couple of cheap ones just to hold everything in place. 02:59

To get access to the battery we are going to have to remove the spare tire. Take this and roll it off to the side and now we have access to the battery. What we will do now is take the black power wire to see how much length we need to go down to the battery. We did not use much but we will cut off our excess and we will follow this a little bit like the green wire, that will be about right, and on the end of the black wire we will install the fuse holder. In one side we will add the ring terminal and the other side we will add the butt connector. Add this to the black wire and now take the ring terminal and we are going to add this to the positive side of the battery. Sneak the lead underneath the structure right here however I think we will put a notch right next to the plastic case because we will run the wires straight out that way we have easy access to the fuse if you ever change it. Now we are going to install the 15 amp fuse 118151 kit comes with a 10 amp fuse and that will be replaced with by this 15. We will take come zip ties now and zip tie the wires safe and out of the way. At this point we can reassemble the interior of the vehicle. To use the wire harness pull a little bit of it out and shut the door on it because the seal is thick enough where it will not hurt anything when you shut the lid. Just to make sure you stay away from the latch, pull out what you need to go out to your hitch. With that that will finish our install of part number 119190 and part number 118151.

Average Customer Rating:  4.8 out of 5 stars   (19 Customer Reviews)

I installed the trailer wiring connector in about an hour and a half and it has worked well. I store the coil of the pig tail coiled in the tire inflation pump, floor compartment, until needed. I used it in my 2021 Ford Ecosport that I also installed a receiver hitch under. Easy to install and much, much cheaper than having the dealership install their version.

by:

Twenty feet of wire wasn't quite enough to make the entire run from the ModuLite to the battery in my 2000 Ford Econoline Van. It could have used another butt connector to attach the wire to the Modulite. These were very small problems as I had other wire and a connector on hand to complete the installation. Four stars for the product.

Five stars for etrailer's website and expert advice online in the form of videos, descriptions for installation, and Q&A section!

Thanks a lot!

Wonderful! Trailer lights bright!

by:

Having just bought a new Kia Soul with LED tail lights, I needed to be certain to get the correct products to properly wire my vehicle without damaging the electrical system. Local installers in my hometown were going to simply tap into the rear tail light wiring and go straight to the trailer lights.

Thanks to you guys and your helpful videos, you advised me to use the #118151 Modulite Installation Wiring Kit in conjunction with with the #119176 Wiring Harness. By doing so, the power wire to operate the trailer lights comes directly from my vehicle battery, and alleviates and/or prevents possible damage to the tail light system of my car.

I advise anyone to get in touch with the "EXPERTS" at etrailer.com for excellent advice and superior products to get the job done!!!!

Thanks,

Wayne

  • Installation of Auxillary Trailer Lighting On a 16 Foot Landscape Trailer, Behind a 2006 Ford F-150
If you have installed a separate battery for the LED lights that you installed then you will need to use a inline fuse to protect the LED lights and battery from shorting out. I would recommend the Modulite Installation Wiring Kit, item # 118151, which has the inline fuse needed and wire for wiring the power to the lights. You will need to ground the trailer battery to the trailer frame and the lights can then be grounded to the trailer frame. I would use a 6 gauge or larger wire and...

  • Troubleshooting the 12 Volt Power Circuit of a Factory 7-Way Connector on a 2009 Chevy Silverado
It sounds like there is an issue with the battery charge wire circuit that connects to the fuse block under the hood of your 2009 Chevy Silverado. I attached a link below to a page that shows how these connections are made. It is also possible that the fuse is blown on this circuit too, you should check your vehicle owners manual to determine which fuses pertain to the 7-way at the rear of your vehicle.

If your 7-Way is not factory installed then you will need to make sure the blue and red wires under the hood at the power distribution box are connected. The red wire has a ring terminal and goes to the closest positive post in the power distribution box with a 30 amp fuse installed in the fuse location nearest the positive post, for power to the brake controller. The blue wire has a plug on it that you will need to remove. You will need to run a length of Jacketed 2 Wire, 10 Gauge, #...

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Doesnt work With Brake Pedal of 2003 GMC 2500HD Sierra
This is a super common problem for GM trucks around the age of your 2003 GMC 2500HD Sierra. Check the third brake light fuse of the truck. This fuse blows very easily in your truck and when that circuit is dead it takes out the circuit needed to activate a brake controller with the brake pedal. An easy way to check this is to press the brake pedal and see if the brake light above the truck bed activates. If so, then this is the problem.

  • Activating Power to a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500
You are correct, there are some connections that will need to be made under the hood of your 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500 in order to make the brake controller and possibly the 7-Way trailer connector fully functional. We actually have a detailed FAQ article covering the connections that need to be made. I have included a link to the article for you to view. You will want to look at Step 2 - Under the Hood. Basically, you will remove the top cover of the power distribution box, the closest...

The only trailer wiring harness I recommend for your 2006 Mercedes C230 is the ZCI harness # 119250KIT with installation kit # 118151. This harness does not require splicing into the vehicle wiring so your vehicle's sensitive wiring and electrical system will be protected. There isn't a plug and play type of harness for this vehicle so the ZCI harness is your best option.

I believe I know what is going on with your brake controller on your 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. But first a note on brake controllers. Brake controllers are not vehicle specific. Some trucks do have an option to plug a brake controller in directly and the harnesses used are vehicle specific. But the brake controllers themselves are not. When a brake controller works with the manual override but not with the brake pedal that indicates an issue on the red wire. Use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 and test the red wire. It should show power when you step on the brake pedal. If it does not, then the first thing I would check is the position of the red wire in the connector that plugs into the truck. It should be positioned like in the picture I have provided. If it is in another location, then move it to the proper location. If...
