Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Worked great . Used force meter to test output . Clean in stall. Unit appears to always be powered. Hot in summer heat so will only connect to power when using

by:

Installation was relatively easy for the brake controller and the adapter cord allowed me to place the controller in the middle of the dash just underneath the AC/Heat control system for good visibility. As always etrailer comes through again! Thank you! John

Perfect fit match up with OEM pre-wired tow package

I’ve had the Timbren suspension enhancement system for a year now on my ‘99 Dodge 1500 4x4. I purchased this product because I had to tow my bumper pull three horse trailer from South Carolina to N. Central Montana. With a camper top, the bed loaded and the trailer loaded the truck sagged really bad. With the Timbrens on the sag went away completely. Making for a much safer less stressful experience while towing.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This etrailer part "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" is a PERFECT fit for my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Tekonsha P3 brake controller.

After a LOT of research I discovered that in the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ series (1999-2004) the 2001 model with "factory installed tow package", was the only year that did not have the 'the tucked away blue wire running back to the 7-pin trailer connector at the rear of the car. Instead a prewired connector was installed. According to the Jeep WJ users site, the Mopar part #56020142AB (wire harness with the appropriate connector for 2001 Jeep GC) had been discontinued, but Tekonsha Corp. (brake controller manufacturer) had a suitable replacement part. The page link on WJ Jeeps to the correct part at Tekonsha was broken and a search of Tekonsha's website produced no wiring that would even remotely help.

After crawling under my dash and removing the electrical fuse cover I found a blue connector. I took a photo of the connector so that I hopefully could find a connector that would help me avoid a complete engine compartment to rear bumper wiring installation.

Here on etrailer I found the brake controller I wanted and started looking at what I needed to make it operational. I tried everything I could think of (including writing the etrailer tech) to find out if the "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P would work for my 2001 Jeep. No one was certain.

Sooo... I decided that at a cost of $14.99 it was worth it to buy - try - and return if necessary. I also figured if 'worst-came-to-worse' I may want to cut off the Dodge connector and use this shielded wire set instead of Tekonsha's wire harness by snipping off the Dodge connector.

5 minutes out of the box my Tekonsha P3 was lit up and a test light confirmed I had power to the factory installed 7-pin trailer connector at the rear using this etrailer part. It snapped into both connections perfectly.

The 30" length sounded adequate, but looked short out of the box. It turns out I have many mounting options with this length. Although it may not be mounted for a day or 2, I've decided to mount it on the left side of the steering wheel column. That's well out of the way of my long legs and yet in easy reach for manually engaging the trailer brake with the hand lever on my brake controller while driving.

I would recommend "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" for ANY brake controller installed in a 2001 Jeep GC with the factory installed Mopar/Dodge connector. Just cut off the Tekonsha connector and butt connect the harnesses: BLUE to trailer connector * WHITE to ground - * RED to BRAKE switch (or recommended brake pedal connection point) * BLACK to battery +

Attached photos: original Mopar brake controller harness for factory installed tow package 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee; etrailer's photo of the dodge connector for Tekonsha controller for visual comparison; a photo of the connector found under my dash; a photo of etrailer part #3020-P connected to my underdash connector; a photo showing the reach of the cable for a possible dash mount; and a photo showing the possible reach for a hidden ash tray mount.

2006 Dodge Durango

This adapter worked perfectly for plug-and-play use in my 06 Durango 5.7 Limited. Very happy with the quality, the braided sleeve over the wires prevents rubbing and removes risk of shorting out wires. The actual plugs themselves are made from good quality plastic, and are not cheap or easily broken.

by:
2001 Dodge Durango

Purchased the wiring harness for my 2001 Dodge Durango and installed the brake controller. It was very easy, as my vehicle had a tow package installed already. Only took 20 minutes to hook up. Recommend this harness for similar suv's. Tested out perfectly. The price was better than all local sources. Trailer pic attached.

This product was a very easy install and initial setup. Only complaint is lack of option when trailer is not hooked up. I would like to present set my boost settings and break output and save them before actually getting hooked to my trailer. Then custom tune it once hooked up. Other than that, everything seems to be top notch.
When it came to the install, I chose to stray away from the typical mounting location and go with a point closer on the center console. If not for that the installation of the P3 would have taken less than 5 minutes from start to finish. Truly plug and play.

by:

Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Electric brake controller was easy to install on my 2007 Ram 2500 diesel. I purchased the factory connector from e-trailer and snapped right in place. At 1st couldn’t find connector on vehicle but after going on e-trailer FAQ I found it. Picture included. Customer service was outstanding

by:

The cable arrived and we'll be camping tomorrow knowing the trailer brakes will be working thanks to your quick shipping and nicely constructed cable for my brake controller. It took 5 minutes to install.

by:

Made installing my brake controller a snap. Simply plugged one end in the plug under my dash and the other end into my controller. Use some zip ties for wire management and DONE. If your vehicle is already wired for a brake controller and you want to put in an after market controller then spend the extra few bucks and get the pre-made wire from etrailer. Well worth it!

by:

Bought it for my 05 cummins with the harness for the year make and model, plug and play mounted well works awesome

by:

Extremely easy to install.... True plug and play.

No issues.

Couldn't be happier

by:

Brake controller works great and was easy to install with the wiring
that was available on site.

by:

Installed easily and now trailer brakes better with truck with no lock ups and is easily adjustable to road conditions while in motion. It is very nice to look at display and see the trailer plug is or is not connected.

by:

Super simple to plug n play.

2005 Dodge Ram Pickup

I purchased the Tekonsha P3 proportional brake controller and the Plug-in Wiring adaptor for my Dodge Ram Diesel 2005. It shipped promptly and arrived on schedule. I plugged it into the under-dash socket in about 30 seconds and tried it out before installing it; it powered up immediately and everything looked good. It took a few minutes to install the P3 bracket to the dashboard just to right of the steering column and about the level of my knee. The adaptor has enough length to put it left or right of the steering column, but not very high on the dash. The adaptor made the installation quite simple – gathering the tools and deciding controller placement took 20 minutes out of the total 30 minute installation time. The actual installation was to drill 2 holes and screw in 2 screws to the dash and 2 screws to the pocket bracket, then tying the cord to other wiring behind the dash. Settings for electric brakes and other info into the unit took under 2 minutes.
Wow! What a difference - the braking was strong, smooth and uniform. I can only compare on my vehicle to braking without a controller unit engaging the trailer brakes, but it showed me how important those brakes are to an easy and safe stop. I have driven other people’s trucks with loaded horse trailers, and their controller units did not give anything like the constant readout of trailer brake voltage and other information this one gives you. This is obviously a high quality unit with everything I need and more. My priority is horse safety on the road and that includes smooth, proportional braking. I like the ability to monitor the voltage of the vehicle system, the volts and amps to the trailer, and troubleshooting capabilities.
I spent 6 or 8 hours reading everything on brake controllers before ordering this one, and compared it to several other highly-rated units. While it is available for similar pricing from eBay and other sites, I found etrailer.com's website to make things very easy, such as finding the exact Plug-in Adaptor for my vehicle, finding videos about various controllers, and finding instructions for installing the unit. Thanks to the etrailer.com website, I was able to check under my dash to verify the brake controller plug was there waiting to be used, and I had a very realistic idea of the installation procedure in advance. Getting the Plug Adaptor in the same shipment was important too, and let me install it immediately. I was glad I ordered from etrailer.com and would not hesitate to order from them again.

This review was so helpful after all my own research that it helped me feel cofident in my decision to try this connector on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the factory tow package. Like she said. It takes longer to decide where to put it than it did to take it out of the box, plug it in and tie the cable neatly in place. One thing that she didnt say is that the sheathing around the 4 wires keeps the bundle as neat and clean as Ive ever seen in a wiring harness.

Still working great. I have not even used all the diagnostic features lately. Trips as far as Orlando to Dallas to Houston and back. No issues, and I have put it on and off about 10 times, ie unplugged it when trailer not hitched. Easy to adjust the boost on the brakes.
Janine P - 12/10/2015
This part made it easy to install, and I have unplugged the controller each time I unhitch the trailer, then put it back in, clipping the plug-in adapter to the back and snapping the unit into its bracket, probably 10 times this year. Clicks in great each time, unit works perfectly and I use different boost when horse is not in the trailer, due to change in weight.

I ordered the Tekonsha P3 and a wire harness for my 2006 Dodge 1500. The harness matched perfect and took about 10 minutes to attach it and zip tie it down. The P3 bracket took about 15 minutes and I was ready to go. Thank you all at etrailer for having the right info and the right set up for my vehicle. I say that due to getting the wrong wire harness on items I've ordered elsewhere. If I need anything else for my trailers I will use you all again!

All fuses and breakers needed for the operation of your brake controller should already be in place. You can check your owner's manual for the location of the fuses that manage the tow package. All you should have to do is plug in one end of the wiring adapter, part # 3020P to the port next to the emergency brake, then attach the other end to the brake controller.
