Video Transcript for Trailer Breakaway Switch Installation

Today on this old horse trailer we are going to replace the break a way switch. And we are going to be replacing with part number 420000 Tekonsha, the first thing we need to do is remove the old switch. Its rib bitted into place so the first thing we need to do is drill out the rib bits and remove it, and also disconnect the wiring. The wiring underneath is a junction point here, and also a junction point, and heres our second one in the harness, what we will do is go ahead and disconnect it right here and we will put in new connectors at these points. We will use our old switch as a pattern to drill out holes for our new switch. Now we will go ahead and drill out our pot holes for that.

We will go ahead and run our wires through our metal bracket, and then through the frame. We use two self tapping screws to attach it back to the frame, these are number 14 screws. Okay we will take these two wires, one wire will go to the splices that we had before, doesnt matter which one in this case. Lets go ahead and cut it to length, and we will use a butt connector as a junction for the three wires. Pair those two together, and put a butt connector in place.

We will go do the other wire and make our splice there. Okay connections are made, now lets go ahead and use some electrical tape to seal them up. Our cable comes with a cable looped in, a good idea to connect this to your vehicle, we got a quick link, we will be using a 3/8 one right here. It is over kill but we may need that to get over steel, and there are different style hitches with different style tow loops and thicknesses, so best to go large and work with that. Alright and there you have it for the replacement of our break a way switch on this old horse trailer..

etrailer products and service are excellent! With their helpful videos and staff (plus a little help from Curt Manufacturing and our teardrop trailer manufacturer (CampInn)) I was able to install electric brakes on the trailer, and a controller in my vehicle by myself. I had never installed electric brakes before. Everything works perfectly!

Purchased this switch to replace old rusty unit on our cargo trailer. I checked function with volt meter prior to installation and it works as advertised. Quality seems to be very good. • Breakaway Switch Diagram for Installation on a Dump Trailer with Trailer Mounted 12 volt Battery
I attached a diagram showing how a breakaway switch, like part # 420000, would be wired to a trailer mounted battery like the one on your Loudo dump trailer. With this type of setup you would not want to pull the breakaway switch with the trailer connected to the vehicle, to avoid a short circuit situation which could damage your brake controller. When testing the breakaway switch just be sure to disconnect the trailer connector from the truck, as it would be in a breakaway situation. The...

  • What Does a Trailer Breakaway Kit Do
Yes, what you described is the correct purpose of a trailer breakaway braking system. If for some reason the hitch and the safety chains were to fail and the trailer was to be completely unattached from the tow vehicle the breakaway kit would activate the trailer brakes so that it would stop as soon as possible. You would want to ensure that the length of the cable is enough so that under normal situations the pin would not get pulled while the trailer is still safely connected to the...

  • Can the Pin On a Tekonsha Breakaway Switch Be Removed To Replace Steel Wire
Yes, the pin can be pulled off and you can then replace the wire. Make sure that everything is disconnected so you do not accidentally set the breakaway kit off.

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Only Works with Override Lever
Sounds like your brake controller will apply your trailer brakes if you apply the manual override lever but not when you press the brake pedal. This is a fairly common problem and the solution is the red wire of the brake controller. Make sure it is connected to a circuit that only sees voltage when the brakes are applied and none when released. Most likely the connection is the issue and just reconnecting the circuit will cause the controller to work again.

  • Solution for Lost Plunger for Esco Model 2010 Breakaway Switch
The easiest solution I can provide is to just replace the entire switch with the part # 420000 that you referenced. Trying to replace just the plunger can be challenging and since all of the switches are basically universal it's just easier to replace the whole thing.

  • Can Replacement Breakaway Switch # 420000 Be Used with Any Breakaway System
For the most part, all breakaway situations work the same way. There are a few exceptions but they are not common. If your existing system used 2 wires like # 420000 then you can use it or any similar switch. I have included a link to all of the breakaway switches we carry.

  • How Does Replacement Breakaway Switch Wire into Circuit
I don't have a specific way to recommend wiring the part # 420000 to a dump trailer but essentially this switch wires into a circuit by just cutting the wire and splicing it between the two wire ends. Whenever the plug of the switch is inserted the circuit is dead and then when the pin is removed the circuit is active. I attached an install video for you to check out as well.

I wish we carried that but we do not. One solution we can provide is to replace the entire switch with part # 420000. This will be the easiest solution and will work well as the switches are universal.

  • Should a Rusted Trailer Breakaway Switch be Replaced
The pin that keeps the contacts inside a break away switch is plastic or otherwise a material that does not conduct electricity. As long as the contacts on the inside are not rusted the switch will continue to work. There is a way you can test it and I have linked an FAQ that shows how. Given that rust spreads it sounds like it would be a good idea to replace the switch. You can use any switch, like # 420000, that you have referenced. If the wiring to and from the switch is removed then...

  • Identifying a Trailer Breakaway Switch with ESCO Printed on the Switch
ESCO actually stands for Elkhart Supply Corporation, that is the brand of your breakaway switch. Most likely it is part number LBS48-16. If you are looking for a replacement switch the Hopkins Replacement Break-Away Switch # HM20014 should work well for you. I attached a couple FAQ articles on breakaway switches for you to check out as well.

  • Replacing Breakaway Switch On a Trailer with ESCO Breakaway System
You likely can use any replacement switch since all they do is complete a circuit when the pin is pulled out. One wire on the switch should be connected to the positive battery terminal on the trailer. The other will tee into the wiring leading from the trailer connector to the brake magnets like in the diagram I have included. Just follow the wires on the old switch to where they are connected and remove them. I have also included a link to the right that should help.

  • Are There DOT Regulations on the Pull Pin Lanyard of a Breakaway System
That we or Tekonsha are aware of there aren't any restrictions on the cable used on breakaway system. Typically in towing situations the restrictions aren't that specific. They will say you need a breakaway system that functions, but they won't get down into the materials used of the system in question. For more information on breakaway systems check out the link I attached.

  • Breakaway Battery Causes Trailer Breaker to Pop When Connected Troubleshooting
Sounds like you have at least a few wiring problems going on with your setup. Instead of trying to troubleshoot each issue you have I think it would be smart for you to inspect all of the trailer wiring you have starting with the 12 volt circuit from your tow vehicle to the battery and breakaway system to see if you can find any shorts or exposed wire and fix as necessary. I attached a diagram and an FAQ on breakaway systems for you to check out. I also attached an FAQ on trailer wiring...

  • Bedroom Circuit Breaker and Main Breaker Trip on a 1998 Four Winds Travel Trailer
It sounds like a possible short caused by a damaged or corroded wire. This would cause an overdraw and trip the circuit breakers. You would have to examine the wire in question and look for pinched areas or frayed and exposed copper strands. I do not have access to a wiring schematic for the trailer. Your best option for that would be the trailer manufacturer.

  • Troubleshooting Wiring Issue of Trailer Breakaway System
Most likely the problem is not insufficient amperage if the fully charged breakaway battery won't apply the brakes. You can test this however by running a jumper wire from a car battery to see if the much higher amperage of that battery does the job. I would be very surprised if the problem wasn't the wiring. Electric stuff can be frustrating to diagnose, but if you go over all of the connections and compare the setup to the diagram I attached you should be able to find the problem.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Electric Brakes and Breakaway Kit Installation
If you just put new brake assemblies on your dump trailer, the brake magnets have two wires and it doesn't matter which one gets the brake controller output voltage and which one is grounded to your trailer. You do want to make sure the one grounded to your trailer has a bare metal to metal connection free of rust, corrosion, or debris. If you cut the wiring of the switch and bypassed it like you mentioned and could hear the brakes hum that would mean that the switch is the issue that's preventing the system from working properly. • Wiring a Trailer Breakaway Kit on a Bigfoot Travel Trailer
In order for a break away system to power electric trailer brakes, it will need a 12 volt power source (a battery mounted on the trailer). The battery has to provide a full 15 minutes of braking power to comply with DOT regulations. On the trailer connector there is a wire that goes back to the trailer brakes. This wire may be black or blue depending on the specific system. Attach one wire from the switch to the wire that goes to the trailer brakes. There should be another wire, usually...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Breakaway Switch and Grounding Wire On 14-Foot EZ-Dump Trailer
After speaking to my contact in the electronics department at Cequent, I have discovered what could be the source of the problem. If the ground is disconnected, the breakaway battery ground is disconnected, and if the trailer is not attached to a tow vehicle, the 12-volt current you are detecting in your trailer frame is the current that should be going to your ground. Try the test again with these issues resolved and the problem should take care of itself. If you continue to have the...

  • Trailer Breakaway Switch Smoked/Melted When Trailer Was Unattended
The Tekonsha Replacement Trailer Breakaway Switch # 420000 that you referenced should work fine as a replacement part for your trailer's breakaway system. As for the cause for a smoking/melting switch, my first thought is a malfunctioning breakaway battery charger. If this unit failed it might have taken out the switch with it. We offer the Tekonsha Battery Charger for Trailer Breakaway Systems # 1024, whose installation is shown in the linked diagram.

Yes, the brake magnets should engage when pulling a properly wired breakaway switch pin. If the brakes aren't locking up on your trailer when pulling the pin then I recommend making sure the power source (battery) for the switch is fully charged and that everything is properly connected. When testing the switch I don't recommend having the trailer hooked up to the tow vehicle just so you can avoid any potential damage to the brake controller or wiring on the vehicle.
