Video Transcript for Review of Yakima Replacement Parts - Chain-Style Rubber Bike Straps - 8890221

Today, we'll be taking a quick look at the replacement chain straps for Yakima bike carriers. These are going to fit your older style Yakima carriers. It's going to be a direct replacement for those rubber chain-style straps. They're still going to have a little bit of stretch that allows you to get your bike mounted up and stay secure on your Yakima rack. We'll get three straps in one, or three straps total. Those are each going to have the same measurements, which'll be about nine inches long from the very end to the very top.

The distance from that first hole to our handle portion, that's about eight inches from the center of that hole. The diameter of each of the mounting holes is about half an inch. Holding that up so you can see it there. Half an inch for the diameter. The outermost portion of our strap measures about an inch and a quarter wide.

And they're about a quarter of an inch thick. This is going to fit the Yakima BigHorn, the BuckHorn Elite, and the Yakima SuperJoe and KingJoe series trunk-mount racks. This'll get you back out on the road enjoying your Yakima rack and keeping all of your bikes secure at all those points for the cradles. If you need any other replacement parts for your Yakima bike rack, check out etrailer.com. We have a lot of options available for any of your replacement part needs. That's going to do it for our look at the replacement chain straps for Yakima bike carriers..

Would it be possible to send a picture of the bike rack? Yakima has made several different 4 bike carriers in the past.

I am in Arizona for the winter the rack is in Illinois. I did previously send you all pictures of the rack and the saddles. I will check to see if I still have the pictures.

I did hear back from Yakima who believes that you have the double down 4 model 8002424. Which means that the chain straps should have worked for you. Can you tell me in more detail what happened when you tried to use them?

by:

Great replacement for swing daddy

by:

Fit just like an original part. Easy replacement. Thank you etrailer

by:

When Yakima discontinued my bike rack, they also discontinued supplying the straps. Luckily, etrailer still had the straps in stock so I didn't have to go without or ad lib replacements just to keep using the rack.

This replacement strap was about 4-6" shorter than the Yakima part I needed to stretch all the way over the bike forks. I'll need to figure out a work-around.

You mentioned that the straps were 4 to 6 inches shorter than the strap you needed. I wanted to ask you a few follow up questions. Do you know the model name of the bike rack that you have? How long is the strap that you want to replace?

Jeff

2/1/2022

Yes, it is the Yakima HangOver 6-Bike Hitch Rack. Here are pictures of the rack and the straps that are used. Im not near the rack right now, but I can get the measurements later this evening.

Etrailer Expert

Jenny N.

2/1/2022

Great! - You do not need to measure as knowing the model is very helpful. I do have one more question though. Was your Hang 6 bought before or after August 2020?

Jeff

2/1/2022

Before August 2020.

Etrailer Expert

Jenny N.

2/1/2022

It turns out that I do not have the strap on our site currently. I am having it added and once it is I can let you know the part number and lead time. The strap for models made before August 2020 are different then the straps made after 2020

8890221 Replacement Chain Straps

I ordered 3 of each, and they were just what I was looking for. Thank you Etrailer, for your reasonable prices, and shipping costs. Etrailer kept me informed via email on my order. Very satisfied! Highly recommend Etrailer!

by:

I ordered the Yakima bike rack straps because most of mine had cracks in them as they were probably older than 7 years . The product arrived promptly during the covid 19 pandemic. They are strong and safely secure my bike on my bike rack. I am pleased with the product and such prompt shipping.

by:

Excellent straps. I use them to secure our bikes in the bed of the pickup. Although intended specifically for a Yakima rack, their design lends itself to more universal applications. The shipping from etrailer.com was very prompt, and overall I was very pleased with my experience. Therefore I will shop again from etrailer.com in the future.

by:

I purchased straps for my "old" Yakima bike rack. The company kept me up to date on tracking when my purchase would arrive. They arrived when they said they would and fit my bike rack perfectly. Great Quality, price for the produce and customer service.

by:

My older style yakima bike carrier required these 5 hole style straps. Emailer delivered quickly. Installation was A snap. Project complete. I ordered 6 pairs (12 straps) as my yakima has 4 bike holders times three straps each

by:

Beware that these replacement straps are quite a bit shorter than the originals, at least on my rack. If you can't get your present straps to fit in the first 6 holes, these are probably too short, as you won't have enough to grip while trying to put them around your bike. Unfortunately, according to Yakima, they have discontinued the longer straps. If you have small tubes on your bike, they may work. My bikes are probably slightly oversize, but certainly not large tubes.

  • How to Replacement Chain Straps for Yakima Bike Carriers Work
The Replacement Chain Straps for Yakima Bike Carriers # 8890221 are actually attached to the cradles and are used to secure your bike to the bike rack. The word "chain" is just talking about the style of strap this is. I've attached a photo of where these straps would be located on a Yakima bike rack.

  • Availability of Replacement Straps for Rhode Gear Bike Rack
I recommend taking a look at the Yakima Replacement Rubber Chain Straps # 8890221. This replacement strap is not specifically designed for Rhode Gear Racks, however Yakima used to actually own Rhode Gear so there's a good chance these will work well. There is no longer a direct replacement strap available for the Rhode Gear bike racks. In order to see if this will work, I recommend taking a couple quick measurements on your existing strap. This replacement measures 9 inches from end to...

The holes will be slightly smaller but will still stretch to fit.

  • Replacement Straps For An Older Rhode Gear Bike Rack
Yes, we have found that the Replacement 8-Hole Rubber Chain Straps # 8890221 will indeed work on the Rhode Gear bike rack. The strap itself is 9" long, and the holes are 1/2" in diameter. So the holes may be slightly smaller than your old straps, but you will easily be able to stretch them to fit. Yakima used to own Rhode Gear back in the day, so you will find these straps to be extremely similar.

  • Replacement Rubber Cradle Strap for Rhode Gear Spare Tire Mount Bike Rack
Thank you for providing a photo of the RhodeGear bike cradle strap you are looking to replace. The Yakima replacement rubber strap you were looking at, part # 8890221, is a set of three straps. Overall length tip-to-tip is 9 inches and hole diameter is 1/2 inch.
