Video Transcript for Yakima HoldUp EVO Platform Rack Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Yakima HoldUp Evo two bike platform rack for two inch hitches, part number Y02479.The Yakima HoldUp Evo enables it to carry up two bikes at the rear of your vehicle with an option of four if you we're to get the additional add on. With this particular one, I like because you can actually tilt it away with both bikes still attached to get rear hatch access. Which may be difficult with your hatch style. Also you don't have to lift the bike up over your head to put it in place like you would for the roof style. Which can be a little taxing especially with a taller vehicle like this.As I said earlier, this can tilt away with both bikes still attached. What makes it different from the previous HoldUp, normally you would have like a red knob on the other side here that you would have to pull out.

And that can be a little awkward when you're trying to tilt it away, especially if you we're to have four bikes on this. What makes this a little bit easier is, we have this handle up at the front, which is going to make it a little bot more simpler for us to move this back.So holding onto the bike rack itself, and then coming up to our handle here. We'll push forward then let it tilt away. And now we have full hatch access. And there's plenty of space in between the hatch and the bike rack itself. And now we'll lift this back into position.

This can be a little bit tough especially when you have some heavier bikes on here. But just lift it back up until you hear that click and then you're ready to go.The HoldUP Evo has a lot of modifications to it. One being it's already fat bike ready and can carry E-Bikes up to 50 pounds. Also this bike rack features little to no bike to bike contact thanks to this spacing between the arms themselves. Now when you have hanging style bike racks, that might be a little bit harder to do especially once you get to the three to four range where you're trying to spread everything apart evenly. And should there be contact between the pedals or something like that.

We do have two bolts on either side in this slot here, so you can adjust this back and forth as necessary too. And of course on the end here, we do have Yakima bottle opener which comes equipped on most bike racks. This is a bike rack that grips your bikes by the front wheel here. And that's going to enable you to carry a wide variety of bikes without the need for any bike adapter bars or anything like you would have for say hanging style bike racks. And also for additional security, it does have these cable locks that are integrated into the arms themselves. And this is to help lock your bikes to the bike rack and these are going to be keyed alike with the hitch lock, which we'll get to later. The wheel arms feature a ratcheting arm, which makes it very easy to put on and take off.

Just push it down into place and when it's ready, push the button in to release it.It holds the rear tire in place with this strap here, as well as this cradle. Both the front cradle and the rear cradle can hold a wide variety of tires from 20 to 29 inches in diameter and width up to five inches. And the rear cradle's also movable to accommodate bikes of different lengths. And then to fold it up, you again come to that handle up at the front and just push it up against your vehicle. And this is going to be for those close quarter situations such as parking or putting it in your garage. Pull towards you and push up.Another improvement on this bike rack is the pedal system. We'll have this kick start pedal system here. You push down on it with your foot to be able to fold it down into place to get ready to load up your bikes. While before again, you would have that knob at the front, which could be a little trying to get to from time to time. One of the nicer things about this rack which is shared with a lot of other Yakima racks. Is that it has a tool free installation into your hitch. And by that, you simply slide it into place, push the gray knob pin in like so. Then we have this anti-rattle knob at the end, you turn to the right to tighten it up. That's going to take the shake and play out of the shank. And on top of that, it locks into place and this is keyed alike with your cable lock. So it'll just free spin and it can't be removed from the hitch and it's secure. And it also has this dust cover to keep out the road dirt and grim while you travel.Just to give you a quick measurement. From the center of the pin here to the start of the bike rack here is going to be about four and 1/4 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the bike rack, that's going to be about eight inches when it's folded up. From the furthest point out, that's going to be about 17 and 3/4 inches. With it folded down, that's going to be about 34 inches to the edge here. And the closest point to the center of the hitch pin hole when it's folded out, that's going to be about 13 and 1/2 inches. The weight of the carrier's going to be 50 pounds and the weight capacity of the bike rack is going to be 50 pounds per bike. So always keep that in mind when loading. When comparing this with other bike racks, one that comes up is going to be the Rocky Mounts Monorail two bike rack for two inch hitches. One of the major differences between these two racks is going to be the actual carrying capacity. With the Rocky Mounts Monorail having a carrying capacity of 60 pounds per bike and the Yakima HoldUP Evo having a 50 pound per bike weight capacity.Another difference be these two bike racks is how it installs into the hitch. With the Rocky Mounts having an anti-rattle bolt and lock and of course the Yakima HoldUP having a toolless install. Also when it comes to ease of access or ease of use. While the HoldUP does have the foot pedal as well as the handle that makes it easier to tilt away from the vehicle. With the Rocky Mounts Monorail, the handle is right at the end of the bike rack, which you can easily grab with your hand to tilt it away. Now that we've gone over some features of the HoldUp Evo, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. It's very easy. Simply lift it up and slide it in to the shank of your hitch. You want to line up the pin hole like so. Then we'll take our push pin here with the gray knob and just push that in place. Then we'll come to out anti-rattle knob here to start tightening that up. And as you tighten this up you may need to move it around a little bit. It's going to help it tighten up just a little bit better. Get it nice and snug. You see all that play there as we're tightening it down back and forth. Now you see all that shake and play is gone. So we'll take our included key. Lock that in place and now it just free spins, so it can't be loosened up and now it's secure. To fold down our bike rack, it's very simple. There's a pedal here at the front, you just push down with your foot and let come towards you. Wait til you hear that click and then we'll fold everything out. We'll start by folding out our wheel cradles. And then we'll fold out our hook arms as well. Next we'll loosen up our wheel straps here. You push in the gray tab and that'll release it. We'll keep them in the open position. We'll do this on both. And now we can grab our first bike and set it in place. Then we'll bring our hook up. You want to have it about an inch or less from our forks or from our frame here. And then push it down nice and tight. And then we'll strap up the rear wheel. With our rear strap here, we just want to make sure we're not damaging the spokes once we install this. Our final step before we install our second bike is we're going to secure our bike at the rear here in place. We'll wrap around our lock and make sure it wraps around the frame. Then we'll bring it back up front. Then we'll take our included key. And now it's secured to our bike rack. Now we can install our second bike and repeat this process. Now a quick note when loading up bikes. You always want to put the heaviest bike towards the vehicle. You don't want that hanging off the rear here. Now with our front bike here, we're not going to have enough length to get back by going through the frame. But you can fix that by going through the frame in this portion here instead and that's just as good. With everything installed, now we'll take it out on our test course and show you how it looks. First we'll take it onto our slalom course. This will show you the side to side action such as making turns or evasive maneuvers. Now we're at the solid speed bumps, which simulates going into your driveway or parking lots. And there you have it for the Yakima HoldUp Evo two bike platform rack for two inch hitches, part number Y02479.

2-Bike Add-On for Yakima HoldUp EVO for 2" Hitches - Y02482

Average Customer Rating:  4.0 out of 5 stars   (5 Customer Reviews)

Add-on lets you convert your Yakima HoldUp EVO 2-bike carrier for 2" hitches (Y02479) into a 4-bike rack. The add-on bolts easily to the base of your original rack with included hardware.

Unfortunately this add on didn't work that well. The connection is poorly done and it sags a lot! Even with light weight bikes (XC Carbon race bikes) it would sag down and bounce. If you have a large truck with a very high hitch, this may work for you but the bounce is really unnerving.

We sold the whole rack and went with a 1UP rack that we are very happy with.

Great add on to carry two more bikes. Fast shipping and great price.

I needed this rack extension for four bikes and could not find it anywhere. I ordered from etrailer even though it was backordered. etrailer kept me in the loop on my order and got it to me asap.

We needed the bike rack before the weekend. They prepared the order and got it ready to ship late Sunday and it was delivered on Wednesday. Thank for the quick turn around.
