Video Transcript for Review of the Heavy Duty Shocks for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the Heavy Duty Shocks for the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer. It is for a quantity of two shocks. Now, this pair of heavy duty shocks will upgrade the factory shocks on your 78 inch Rack and Roll Trailer, which we sell separately on our website. That trailer part number is Y08107.

Basically, these shocks will increase the weight capacity by a hundred pounds. The factory shocks have a 250 pound capacity. These will raise it to a maximum load capacity of 350 pounds. And it is required, these should be used if you're hauling more than 200 pounds on the trailer. Now, these will also work on the smaller 66 inch Rack and Roll Trailer, which is part number Y08106.

But you do need to add the 78 inch Cross Member Kit, which is part number Y08111. Now, this will give you four inches of vertical movement to cushion and protect your cargo. And as we mentioned, it is for a quantity of two shocks. Application, again, it's for the 78 inch Rock and Roll Trailer. And the trailer capacity after adding these is 350 pounds.

And the last thing to give you is the measurement from the center eye. The center eye is gonna be 12 and seven eights inches. But that should do it for the review on the Heavy Duty Shocks for the Yakima Rock and Roll Trailer.

Shocks held up well given 7000 mile road trip to Alaska but did incur damage due to their exposure to road debris and rock chips. Trailer scaled at 400#’s.

by:

This is a great trailer that keeps exceeding expectations. With these shocks I’ve has 1500lbs on it (which I do not recommend and it definitely bottomed out the suspension. But it is used at least once a month and it is really great!

by:

We upgraded to the heavy duty shocks when we bought our Rack and Roll 78 ten years ago. What we failed to do was proactively replace them along the way. When one broke on a recent trip it dropped the load onto the tire and chaos ensued. We replaced them with a new set from etrailer and notice a bit of a design change. Installation was a breeze. Many thanks to etrailer for having the parts and their fast service.

by:

Arrived in plenty of time. Take photos of the original installation before swapping to the new ones. Lots of washers involved. Adding years to my Yakima trailer.

by:

In addition to my wildy a.t.a.k. kayak, along side it, I mounted a large rectangular rod box (it’s a Yakima, I don’t recall the exact model name but they only build one thing in this class). That gets loaded with 4-8 rods, some med and small boxes, kayak anchor, etc so I was worried about the factory standard jobs being up to snuff, particularly if I had to drag the trailer thru some interesting terrain. The HD shocks have held up well with zero problems to date. Very pleased

by:

Easy order, fair price, quick delivery. Slight damage to exterior carton, but not a mark on the shocks. Very pleased.

Installation was straightforward, no problem removing the old shocks. Seem to ride about the same with two 14 kayaks. Rarely carry any load approaching 300-350 lbs, but nice to know I could. First standard shocks lasted over 10 seasons, these should outlast me.

by:

Arrived well-packed and quickly once available. They were super easy to install, and have enhanced our trailer's load capacity and ride. Highly recommend. NOTE: There were supply issues for these and other Yakima parts that were out of eTrailer's control, resulting in a very long wait time, but their staff were very responsive and attentive to the problem, following up multiple times with periodic updates on their expected arrival - thanks!!

by:

The shocks arrived on time and in good condition. I was concerned that it would be hard to figure out how to take the original shocks out and put the heavy duty shocks in, but the documentation that came with them was very straightforward and the trailer design made the change pretty easy. Getting the cotter pin out of the main shock pin took me a while; I ended up using a wooden wedge to get the cotter pin open enough to get it around the main pin and take it out.
Note that the nut and the bolt for the main shock bolt (referred to as the "second mounting point" in the documentation) are different sizes; I could use my 21mm socket on the bolt, but had to use an adjustable spanner for the nut, because it was bigger than any socket or wrench I had.

by:

Installing the heavy duty shocks onto the Yakima Rack and Roll trailer was so fast and simple. The included instructions tell you to remove the wheels but that is totally unnecessary. After removing the bottom shock pin just use a piece of wood or a cardboard box to hold the wheel and it’s axel up and out of the way to allow you to get an open box end wrench on the head of the top mounting pin of the shock. It is located in the fender well. Using this approach, both new shocks can be mounted in about 20 minutes total. Tip, do one side at a time so you can always look at the other side for reference if needed.

Shipment and delivery was fast and per their estimate.

by:

Super fast shipping! The heavy duty yakima shocks are worth the investment. I used them to carry 2 18ft kayaks and 4 bikes fork down with tire carriers. The kayaks had all the gear stowed inside, like the rescue equipment, life jackets, paddles etc and some bike equipment like helmet, shoes, tools. The extra weight was worth the shock investment, no kicks from the trailer just smooth ride over bumps. Also, the trailer is worth the investment since it significantly reduces drag and increases gas mileage.

by:

Nice heavy duty upgrade. Working well.

by:

Shocks were exactly as ordered and shopping was very prompt! Customer service is excellent! I had to return 1 box of shocks only because of my mistake in not realizing there were 2 in a box, but etrailer was very gracious in processing the return. I would totally buy from them again!

by:

I have not installed yet but the customer service at etrialer is always excellent! Only had one small issue and it was handled very quickly and professionally. I will use them when ever I can. Thank you!

by:

I got Lots of boxes with items well packed . Assembly - take your time - manual is good and answers each step well. Parts are high quality and finished build is very satisfying. After I use it for a while I can say more.
I talked to several long term owners and both said No problems and satisfied.

by:

Great staff, right product. Yakima had good instructions

by:

Just the extra support your trailer needs to carry that extra load. Easy to install.

  • Will Heavy Duty Shocks Fit Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer 66" Trailer
According to Yakima, the Heavy Duty Shocks for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08110 should only be used if you add the 78" crossmember kit # Y08111. They didn't have an exact reason for this, but it sounds like the concern is people will attempt to overload the trailer if they only add the heavy duty shocks. The shocks alone won't increase the capacity of the # Y08106 which is 250 lbs with the standard or heavy duty shocks. We don't have any direct reports of customers using these on...

  • Recommended Rack and Roll Trailer for Kayaks and Bikes
The Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer - 66" # Y08106 or 78" # Y08107 ride very well at highway speeds on long trips. These 16 inch wheels work very well at any posted highway speed in favorable conditions. Just like any trailer, you want to slow down in conditions with excessive water, snow or ice, and extreme wind. We have had very happy customers with these trailers as you can see in the customer reviews and have not had any issues with the tires. This trailer has been on the market for...

  • Can Heavy Duty Shocks be Put on the 66 Inch Rack and Roll Trailer
The heavy duty Rack and Roll shocks, part # Y08110, can only be used on 66 inch Rack and Roll if you upgrade it with the 78 inch crossmember kit. The crossmember kit is part # Y08111. The 66 inch trailer is rated up to 250 pounds so as long as you're under that capacity there really isn't a need to upgrade it. It would just give you some peace of mind.

  • Should Yakima Rock and Roll Trailer Upgrade to Heavy Duty Shocks
While there isn't a life expectancy, per se, of the shocks on the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer - 66" # Y08106 and 78" # Y08107, upgrading to the HD shocks is absolutely a good idea if your gear weighs around 200 llbs and certainly anything above that. The Heavy Duty Shocks for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08110 do increase the capacity of your trailer from 250 lbs to 350 lbs so if you need that extra capacity, the HD shocks are what you'll need. That said, if you are just in the 100...

  • When Should the Heavy Duty Shocks for the Yakima Rack N Roll Trailer Be Adjsuted
You'd only need to adjust the Heavy Duty Shocks for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08110 if you're hauling a heavy load that is causing your shocks to bottom out. These shocks have 4" vertical adjustability to combat that, so you'd need to adjust according to your load.

  • Removing Bushing to Install Heavy Duty Shocks for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer
I checked with Yakima and they told me to have to have you clean and lubricate the bushing and then try to pull it off with a pair of pliers. Force isn’t an issue because if they can’t get the bushing off we will need to replace the trailer side rail.

  • Are The Heavy Duty Shocks And The 66 Inch Yakima Rack And Roll Trailer Compatible?
I reached out to my contact at Yakima and they confirmed that the Heavy Duty Shocks for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08110 will fit on the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer - 66 inch # Y08106. However the 66 inch trailer is not able to carry more than 250 lbs unless you add the 78 inch crossmember kit # Y08111 which will allow you to carry up to 350 lbs. The 66 inch crossmember limits that trailer to 250 lbs.

  • What Size Ball Is Needed For The Yakima Rack And Roll Trailer?
The Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08106 has a 2" coupler, so your ball mount will need a 2" ball like the Curt # 40038. At the stock set up, you will have 66" crossbars and 250 pounds of carrying capacity. This can be upgraded to 350 pounds by by adding the 78" crossmember kit # Y08111 and HD shocks # Y08110. You will not need to upgrade the ball to do this though.

  • Are the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer Crossbars Plastic or Metal
The Yakima Rack and Roll trailer # Y08106 uses metal crossbars. Plastic bars would not be able to handle the 250 pound capacity the trailer is rated for. Please note to reach the 250 pound capacity it is recommended to upgrade the trailer with heavy duty shocks, # Y08110.

  • How Long Do the Wheel Bearings Last in the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer
Since we have started carrying the Yakima Rack and Roll trailer # Y08107 I have not heard any complaints regarding the wheel bearings failing and only a few instances where people wanted to replace the wheel assembly. If you need to replace your bearings you'll need to source them since Yakima doesn't carry any and we don't carry the proper size bearings that fit. • What Tool Is Needed To Adjust Heavy Duty Shocks # Y08110 For a Yakima Rack & Roll Trailer?
You are correct that the Heavy Duty Shocks # Y08110 for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer should be adjusted using a spanner wrench. While we do not carry this tool you should be able to find it at a local motorcycle parts store. The tools found at automotive stores are typically going to be larger than what you will need. A 38-42mm spanner wench is the size you will need.

The best trailer we offer for your two Titan Propel 12 Kayaks is the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer part # Y08107 paired with the Heavy Duty Shocks for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer part # Y08110.
