Video Transcript for Comprehensive Review: Yakima HullRaiser to HullRaiser Aero Conversion Kit

Ellen: Hey everybody, I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com. And we're going to be taking a quick look at the conversion kit for your Hull Razor kayak carrier. So if you have the Hull Razor, the original one, it only had the attachment point to your round bars, the old school Yakima bars. The world has moved on. We're now using arrow style bars, but that J-style carrier still should be working just fine. Yakima makes good products.

No reason why you can't still use it for years to come until the thing falls apart. This is going to allow you to convert that mount to being able to wrap around any style bar. You could use it on round bars, square bars, arrow bars, and also any factory roof rack system. Pretty simple to get it installed. This also works as replacement hardware for the Yakima J-hooks, another J-style carrier.Unfortunately, we don't have it anymore here at etrailer.com.

It's no longer available. So I don't have one to show you how this goes together but I'm going to do my best to walk you through what it should look like. So the carrier that we're talking about is again, the Hull Razor. So it should look like that guy right there. This is going to wrap around that bottom portion of the cradle.

So you do have to pop off that gray covering that goes at the base of the cradle where your kayak would actually sit. There's some little plugs in there too, that they say that they're one use. I think they're just a little push pins, so you can probably carefully pop them out and reuse them. But if they break or anything like that, we do have replacements for those here at etrailer.com. And we also have replacements for that gray piece as well.

Those are both parts that are listed on the page here for the conversion kit. So you can see those in the description. But once you pop off that gray piece, then the metal bracket here on the kit is going to go in its place. So this is going to wrap around those two tubes that form the J. So if your J is going down and coming towards you, this is going to go over it. So the front of your vehicle would be going this way, the back in the vehicles going that way. Just to give you the lay of the land here. It's pretty simple. This metal piece just goes over the top of that and then you use the hardware to attach it to this bottom bracket that wraps around your bar. Now there's two different styles of bolts. One is the little T-bolt, the other one is a carriage bolt. And there's two different lengths. That's why you have two sets. So they suggest using the shortest length first. And if you don't have enough lengths, you can go to the longer one. The reason why they're different or they have different heads there, let's see those a little bit better, is because one side of this has a quick disconnect. So that little T-bolt, you can just turn it whenever it's loose enough to the side and then release. So that can swing around and it saves you some time whenever you're taking the rack on and off. So that's just the quick release method. When they made this bolt, it's like a little tight. There's a little rolled piece of metal. So that's why it's not wanting to go through all the way or is super easy. But it doesn't really impact the actual functioning of the rack.Anyway so whenever you're actually getting this installed, you just want to make sure that that T-bolt is fully seated in that sideways position so that it doesn't fall out. So pretty simple overall. It should tighten nicely around your bolt. One thing to keep in mind though Yakima really stresses that whenever you're tightening this down, you don't want to see any of the threads coming through the top. If you do, then they suggest that you switch to the shorter bolt. And I don't think that you would have an issue with that on the shorter bolt either. But that's just one thing that they really stressed in the instructions as far as getting this installed. Other than that though, it should be pretty easy. You do need two of these kits to fully convert your Hull Razor, so one for the front, one for the back. So you do need two of these parts to get that installed. And then as far as these little rubber plugs, these I'm pretty sure they go on the bottom to plug up the hole from where the original hardware went. So one side should go in there and then it just pops right in place. From the instructions that we still have access to, there's not a lot of clear designation of where those go, but I'm pretty sure that's where they're going to live. Otherwise you can find a spot on them to pat it out a little bit more, but really the main thing is getting this bracket in place around your bar.So I hope this has been helpful in figuring out how to convert your Hull Razor to the Hull Razor Arrow. Also again, replacement hardware for your Yakima J-hooks should keep you rolling with that kayak carrier for many more years to come. And I hope this has been helpful. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

Fantastic product! I am grateful to eTrailer for providing the Conversion Kit for Yakima kayak bars. It was concerning to have an older kayak system with a new car setup, and I am thankful eTrailer provided the best solution. The Conversion Kit parts are easy to set up, the video provides helpful step-by-step process, and the kit is very durable. We are about to order another for another kayak. Thank you!

Bought a pair of these for a set of old Yakima Hullraisers I had laying around. They perfectly fit the after-market crossbars I got for my 2016 Chevy Equinox.

The hardware I got from etrailer fit the Hullraisers and took all of about 10 minutes to get them on my vehicle. I was hesitant when buying but they fit perfectly.

I sold my pick-up truck and bought a crossover SUV. My truck had a kit with round bars and two pairs of Yakima Hull Raisers that we'd used for a decade of vacation rips. The SUV has the aero bars, so the round clips wouldn't work. These conversion kits do the trick. It only took a few minutes to attach them to the hull raisers, and even less time to put them on the car. Now I can get another ten years' of use out of them! As an added bonus, I received them a lot sooner than I anticipated. Excellent service from etrailer!

This item was on backorder for awhile but I finally got it! It was exactly what I needed for my Yakima style Subaru J hooks on my Thule Aero Blades. Because the width of my crossbar, no other mounting kits would fit except for this conversion kit. The assembly was really easy to put together out of the box. I am happy at how everything turned out.

by:

I needed the conversion kit to keep using my kayak cradles on a new car. Yours came right away and the directions (from email) were very helpful.

by:

Very easy to order. Fast shipping. Customer service was great. Keep up the good work !

by:

Didn't fit what I needed it to, but a well made product nonetheless! I was pleasantly surprised by the quality.

Converts old Hullraiser with clips for round bars to a rack that will fit a wider variety of crossbar shapes. Got the job done for me as far as fitting to a Subaru Outback 2013 factory rack (so kind of oval shaped vs. round). Comes with minimal instructions, but you'll figure them out.

On the Subaru racks I found that I really had to crank these down to get them secure and not risk my boat moving laterally (hullraiser and all across the crossbar!) when encountering gusty crosswinds. Since they are kind of a universal fit thing vs. designed for one specific bar, this may simply be the nature of the beast. I checked and adjusted screw-down tension regularly and used bow and stern tiedowns as well as the straps you'd normally use with Hullraisers and was able to make my trip safely, but this lateral movement was not something I'd experienced with Hullraisers previously using them with the hardware for round bars.

mine broke where 14 bolt goes through and lost kayak, smashed back window, and dented car. blessed it did not cause an accident. need to tie kayak over top and fasten to rail not depending on rack to hold. thinking of putting washers under bolt head to increase holding area.

Always a good idea to have the kayak tied at the bow and stern so should a carrier fail it's still held in place.

Product still getting the job done. Advice about making sure these are secure and checking that they stay that way regularly is still my practice and have not had further lateral movement problems.

by:

Solid construction. Converted my round bar kayak rack to Subaru factory cross bars. In my opinion Yakima needs to add a rubber pad for the bottom of the bracket. etrailer's service was excellent as usual.

by:

The adaptors got is on the water

by:

While they do fit my factory cross bars on my 2012 Dodge Durrango, the rubber pads allow them to flex too much under the weight of the kayaks and work loose. The rubber pads do not stay attached to the u shaped clamps and make it extremely frustrating to install and remove the racks with each use. I was reduced to just removing my crossbars and leaving the racks mounted to them. This combined with the height of the vehicle motivated me to buy a trailer for transporting my kayaks & paddle boards.

by:

I had been using my yakima hullraiser with universal mighty mounts on my factory crossbars on my Toyota until a mount broke and my kayak almost fell off the van. I happened to come across these just by chance and realized I was using the wrong mount and needed these. I didn’t know they existed until I found them on this site. I now have my kayak racks mounted correctly and the flex I got from using the wrong mounts is gone and they’re much lower on the crossbar now that the kayak is easier to load. We will see how long they last and I don’t quite fully trust them to do 70mph down the road yet but I did do 60-65 and got to the site and these were as tight as I left them so give it a couple more trips and I’ll start trusting them. I also found other things I need too that were in the related area that I’ll be ordering soon! The site pretty much tells you what you need.

I searched the internet trying to understand what I needed to convert my Yakima Hullraisers and Lockjaw to work with my new Subaru Outback. My old set up worked on round Yakima crossbars. The internet was not clear at all about whether there was a workable conversion to the built in crossbars of the Outback. Finally I etrailer and talked to Jordan. He contacted Yakima himself. He identified exactly the parts I needed, and then called me back. Very old school and very effectively. Everything worked as it should.

A quick note, the Hullraiser conversion kit doesn't include any instructions -- Yakima gives me more engineering credit than I deserve. For those who might be doing the same conversion, get the instruction manual for the Hullraiser Aero which shows how it is done.

Thanks Jordan

I have been using Yakima accessories for years, but most of those accessories are designed for the round bars. My new vehicle has factory flatter crossbars so I thought I was going to have to buy all new system components. With these adapters I was able to turn my old round bar HullRaisers into the new aero design. All parts are included and it's a snap to install. There are no instructions included, but it's pretty obvious how they attach. I would recommend.

by:

I have several of these conversion kits for another kayak. The ones I got from eTrailer have two rubber pad inserts for the J hook but don’t include the one for the bracket. The picture shows the bracket and rubber pad that you normally get from Yakima. I will have to make some rubber inserts for the bracket to make it work, but it would of been nice to have the third rubber insert that usually come from Yakima.

by:

A bit flimsey when I tighten them they bend and seem like they might break, and they do loosen up during use. The metal screws are very small diameter I am afraid that a strong wind pushing on the kayak may actually shear them so I use lots of straps to also connect the kayak to the rack.

by:

This kit provides hardware to convert the Yakima Hullraiser from the original round/square bar configuration to the Aero Bar (and similar). The swap takes about 5 minutes. You will need the Y8860031 replacement plug kit, as well. If you are gentle removing the plugs, you can reuse them and avoid buying the additional plug kit. Great service and fast shipping from eTrailer!

by:

it's a Yakima bracket for HullRaisers. What else can be said?
More to say about the great ordering experience with etrailer. I ordered on Saturday afternoon & had my stuff by Thursday. Using the economy shipping! I expected to see it in about a month!
Good product & good business with etrailer.

by:

I purchased the spare J-Hook parts from e-trailer and of course parts for perfect. Direct replacements and order process was a piece of cake. Will buy from e-trailer again when these or other parts come to mind.

by:

Excellent service. Our order was on backorder. E-trailer followed up and advised of the status. Product was delivered timely on the scheduled delivery date. Great follow-up communication and delivery service. Kudo's!

by:

I looked all over for this part but only etrailer had it and delivered. Will look at etrailer.com 1st before looking somewhere else. Best prices and excellent knowledgeable customer service.

by:

Does what it is supposed to to. I accidentally bought the HullRaiser rack when I meant to buy the HullRaiser Aero (the only difference is this bracket kit) so I can attach to my factory roof rack, so I had to buy these

by:

This conversion kit worked perfectly. Everything I needed to know beforehand and then during installation could be easily found on the FAQs and website. I only ordered two kits, thinking that would fit two PAIRS; my mistake. I just ordered two more.

by:

Works great on my 2001 Town & Country van factory racks for the Yakima Hullraisers, saved the purchase ($600.00) of a complete rack system.

by:

Excellent, just got these and was able to install in a few minutes. Exactly what I needed so the J Bar Yakama rack would work with my newer Thule cross bars.
