Roadmaster Base Plates - 4427-3A

  • Removable Drawbars
  • Roadmaster
  • Hitch Pin Attachment

Designed specifically for heavy-duty applications, direct-connect brackets install onto your vehicle's frame to provide attachment points for a motor-home-mounted tow bar. Front arms are easily removable when not in use.

  • Hidden bracket design - drawbars are easily removable via 2 pins
  • Computer-cut, all-steel construction provides exceptional strength
  • Black powder coat finish is durable and corrosion resistant
  • Simple installation - no welding
    • Custom base plates ensure a perfect fit for your vehicle
  • No crossbar needed - faster hookup and sleeker appearance
    • Crossbar not required because these direct-connect base plates are designed for strong, heavy-duty applications
  • Compatible with all Roadmaster tow bars that slide into trailer hitch receivers
  • Instructions and mounting hardware included
  • Made in the USA
  • Limited Lifetime Warranty

Note: Direct-connect base plates will work only with the Roadmaster tow bars that slide into a trailer hitch, such as the Sterling, Blackhawk, Blackhawk 2, Falcon and Falcon 2. These base plates will not work with tow bars that require a hitch ball.

Direct-connect brackets do not require a crossbar because of the heavy-duty nature of your vehicle's frame. Thus, installation is simplified, the hookup process is faster, and the total appearance is enhanced.

Note: The EZ Hook safety cables included with Roadmaster's Sterling tow bars will not work with direct-connect base plates. These cables connect to an anchor plate on the Quick Disconnect crossbar, which will not be present when you are using these base plates.

The drawbars, or front arms, on the direct-connect base plate kit are simple to mount and remove, easily securing with pins. Once the drawbars have been removed, the remaining brackets are virtually invisible. On most automobiles, the brackets are mounted within the grille, where they remain not only unseen, but protected from scrapes and scuffs as well.

2015 Dodge Journey

Very good fit. Easy to install. Directions were fairly easy to follow. Will be towing behind our Winnebago Journey. This is my 3rd baseplate from trailer. Great company and customer service.

Still works perfectly as advertised

2011 Ford Explorer

I love the quality of the products I ordered. Customer relations was very good as well, they kept me informed and even though it took several weeks and etrailer had to wait on items to get to them, I was communicated to well. I know it’s important in who you deal within this day and time and you can trust etrailer.

Awesome, great reliability

2015 Ford Explorer

The tow bar Base Kit was a great product. It was advertised to take 3 hours to install, and I (with help) was able to do it in about 2 1/2 hours. It fit perfect and was of great quality. You do need a second person to assist removing and installing the front bumper grille assembly, and to hold up the base plate assembly to get the first bolts started.

My only suggested improvements would be that the photos in the manual are not great, but I was able to figure them out.

Everything is great. I will be towing my Explorer next week to the NASCAR race in Vegas. Good product, easy install which I did myself in a few hours.

High quality, installed easily using the videos and instructions.

Still working great, makes us feel confident while driving down the road.

2014 Ford Explorer

I've owned this for about a year and now posting my review. 1st. Etrailer customer service is exceptional, fast shipping and well packaged. 2nd. The installation instructions included as well as the video made the installation very easy. 3rd I really liked the fact that no modification or removal of the Ford Explorer frame or structure was required. Simple increasing the diameter of two holes was the only modification of the Ford frame. Car tows like a dream. I'm very confident that the engineering of road master will allow me to tow safely for years to come.

The Roadmaster Brake sys, seat adapter, and Roadmaster base kit do a very good job towing my 2013 Explorer

2014 Ford Explorer

Pretty straight forward instructions, easy to follow, would definitely recommend watching the online video first. had to do a little bit of pounding with a lead shot hammer to get 2 of the holes to line up, but not too difficult.

Great!!! We have towed our 2014 Explorer several times between Florida and Indiana and it has worked just as it should.

Review from a similar MX in Base Plates

Every good quality and easy to install. So surface rust that I sanded and spray painted. Overall good product.

Review from a similar MX in Base Plates

Excellent service -- ordered online afternoon of July 13; shipped same day and arrived two days later. etrailer video was helpful in outlining steps for installation - especially fascia removal prior to actual install. Installation took about 3 1/2 hours which includes fascia/grill removal and reinstall. Did need to secure additional fender clips to reinstall fascia - many broke during removal as almost 20 years old -- available aftermarket from Dorman. Order arrived correct with all parts/no damage. Fit was excellent. Will order from etrailer again

Review from a similar MX in Base Plates

Perfect fit for my 2008 Honda Element SC Automatic! There were questions of whether this model was flat towable or not? After researching the heck out of it, I took the chance and I use the Honda 2005 flat tow instructions from the owners manual of that year (there were no engine or tranny changes from 2005 to 2008 that I could see). Perfect! I've now towed my Element over 500 miles without issue. This baseplate and instructions are great. I already had the Roadmaster Falcon 2 tow bar. I use the invsibrake system for the toad brake and love that also.

Review from a similar MX in Base Plates

The baseplate went on with relative ease; However, I had to do some modifications accommodate the brush guard. The instructions stated that I needed to remove the brush guard. I was able to work around that, and fixed it so that I could leave the tow bar mounted when arriving at my location. I pull my Suburban behind a diesel pusher motorhome. It Pulls much easier that I thought it would. I don't advise anyone to try this unless they have access to a machine shop, and are ready to drill some holes. It has been in place for over a year and still works good.

Review from a similar MX in Base Plates

Installed on a 2016 f250 2wd. I did have to ream out some hole for the hardware yo fit. I wasn't able to get proper thread engagement on the vertical bolts because the bolts were too short. So I had to get 2" grade 8 bolts to get the proper thread engagement.

Review from a similar MX in Base Plates

Very easy install on my 2005 CR-V. It sit's nicely tucked into the grill. I did not have to any cutting. It makes your CR-V stronger by replacing a thin frame piece with strong steel crossmember.

Review from a similar MX in Base Plates

We mounted this base plate on our Honda CRV and went on a 5000 mile trip while towing our car. The base plate worked great and we had no issues. I really like the removable arm feature. It makes for a clean look when removed.

Review from a similar MX in Base Plates

The parts are correct but didn’t come in the oem packaging that uses styrofoam padding. They clanked around in the etrailer box and the powder is scratched up pretty bad.

Knowing how Roadmaster takes pride in their packaging to receiving them in this condition is pretty disappointing. There was not even paper wrapping them up. The cardboard box is in perfect shape.

I see in your account that Customer Service is in contact with you. I am glad that we are helping with this issue.

Review from a similar MX in Base Plates

Easy installation. I watched the video a couple of times and read the PDF instructions before my order arrived. When my order arrived I verified that I had all of the parts and in an hour and a half the base plate was on and project completed. I didn't need to trim my grill at all and it looks great.

Review from a similar MX in Base Plates

it was delivered in a timely manner, I was able to do the complete installation by my self in my driveway. I love the ease of use, I can connect and disconnect in minutes. I would recommend it to anyone who is going to be towing a dingy!!

Review from a similar MX in Base Plates

Received my order and it contained all parts required to install. Installation was a breeze because each part fit as it was suppose to per installtion instructions which were also very easy to understand. Will do more buisness with etrailer in the future!!

Review from a similar MX in Base Plates

Makes towing simple.
I once had to disconnect
to make a 7 point turn in my 40 foot RV.
Disconnect and reconnect took about 5 minutes total.
Installation only require I drill a total of two holes.

GMC's construction did require I remove the front bumper to remove the existing recovery hooks. Anyone that works on a GM will tell you that you need to drop the fuel tank to facilitate changing the windshield wipers (kidding...kind of.)

Total install time was about 3 hours by myself.

Review from a similar MX in Base Plates

Had an rv install, works great, hids nicely.

  • Why Ignition Key Is Left In Accessory Mode When Flat-Towing 2015 Ford Explorer
The vehicle has to be placed in the accessory mode because if the key was locked it would not allow the steering to move as needed when flat towing the vehicle. Per the owner's manual it states that the vehicle should be started every 6 hours to maintain a battery charge. As far as the odometer, since all four wheels are on the ground, the odometer registers the miles traveled. I am not aware of any way that can be avoided.

  • Is There a Roadmaster Direct Connect Base Plate Kit that Fits 2013 Ford Explorer
Roadmaster does make a direct connect base plate kit that fits your 2013 Ford Explorer with the part # 4427-3A. • Does Installation of Blue Ox Base Plate Kit on a 2014 Ford Explorer Require the Bumper to be Removed
The Blue Ox base plate kit, part # BX2632, does require the bumper to be removed from a 2014 Ford Explorer. If you're looking for a kit that doesn't remove the bumper we have two from Roadmaster, the XL kit part # 4427-1A and the MX kit part # 4427-3A, that keep the bumper. They fit the 2014 Explorer as long as you don't have the 2.0L EcoBoost engine. If you need to connect the base plate kit to a Blue Ox tow bar we carry adapters for that. The main difference between the Roadmaster MX Base Plate Kit part # 4427-3A and the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit part # 4427-1A for your 2014 Ford Explorer has to do with their compatibility of tow bars. Yes, I did some checking and your 4WD 2013 Ford Explorer can be flat-towed behind a motorhome as long as you follow the prescribed flat-towing procedures you'll find in the owners manual under "recreational towing." For a base plate kit the Roadmaster Direct Connect kit part # 4427-3A is the easiest to use option that I'd recommend highly.
