Specs:

  • Application: trailers with hydraulic drum brakes
  • Gross towing weight: 20,000 lbs
  • Maximum tongue weight: 2,000 lbs
  • Channel width: approximately 3"
  • Channel height: 12"
  • Mounting: straight, 3" wide trailer tongue
  • Model number: DA20
  • 1-Year warranty

Note: Because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes.

When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

Unassembled

Because welding can cause damage to the internal components, this actuator comes unassembled for your convenience. No need to waste time taking apart an actuator or risk losing important parts. Once you have the actuator welded in place, paint it to match your application.

Adjustable Channel Design

The adjustable channel on this trailer brake actuator allows for ultimate versatility. Mount almost any type of coupler (sold separately) - from a standard ball coupler to a lunette ring or clevis attachment - to fit your specific application. In addition, the 5 mounting positions on the channel let you adjust the height of the coupler. Just place the coupler so that it matches the height of the ball mount or other hitch attachment on your tow vehicle and you will be able to tow your trailer levelly.

This actuator is great for tall trailers. This is because the adjustable channel is positioned so that the mounted coupler can sit below the actuator tube, allowing for a greater drop than with a standard center-mounted channel. As a result, you can line up your tall trailer with your tow vehicle's hitch for a level setup.

Video Transcript for Review of Demco Brake Actuator - Unassembled Surge Brake Actuator - DM5947

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Demco unassembled hydraulic drum brake actuator with the 12 inch adjustable channel down. It has a 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity and a prime finish. Now, this actuator will come unassembled and primed for your convenience, so there's no need to waste time taking apart an actuator or risk losing important parts. Now, once you have the actuator welded in place, it's already primed and ready for paint to match your application. This kit will include everything laid out here on the table.

It's all the parts necessary for complete assembly. The outer case right here; the inner slider tube right here that'll slide in and out, that's included; the slide channels, which will install between the inner and outer parts; the emergency lever and guide; safety cable with the hardware. Over here, we have the master cylinder and the push rod assembly, the shock dampeners, and the clevis pins and the shock pin. Now, it does come with a nice set of instructions that'll describe how this all goes together. Now, this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops.

Basically what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration is gonna occur and the momentum's gonna push the trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. So with the surge brake system, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. So when this happens, the actuator, the inner portion will contract into the outer case, applies force to the master sonar in the back here, which internal supply the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes. Now, we talked about these liners here that'll go between the inner slide and the outer case. They are an acetal copolymer lining, so they will provide a nice smooth operation as the actuator telescopes in and out.

Now, the adjustable channel, I'm gonna zoom in on here and show you it has five different mounting positions for your coupler. Now, the coupler's not included. We do sell that separately. And as we mentioned, you can see it as a channel down design. So it allows for a greater drop, which works great for tall trailers.

The channel height is 12 inches. The inside width is gonna be right at three inches. And this is a heavy duty steel construction. Now, the master cylinder right here, this master cylinder is a composite master cylinder. It is durable and efficient. It has a glass reinforced nylon construction, which will resist rust and corrosion. Very large reservoir provides increased capacity for your brake fluid. And at the very top, it has this automotive-style diaphragm cap that'll create a completely enclosed system to help prevent contamination of your brake fluid. Now, the breakaway cable right over here and the hook is all included. That is required by law 'cause it does prevent a trailer runaway situation. We mentioned this is a weld-on installation. It is designed to mount to a straight three inch wide trailer tongue. And this part is made in the USA. Now, the application, it's for trailers with hydraulic drum brakes. We mentioned the gross towing weight capacity of 20,000 pounds. Maximum tongue weight of 2,000 pounds. And the last thing I do wanna mention, just one note, is because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with either a reverse lock out solenoid or a free backing brake so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes. That's gonna do it for a look at the Demco unassembled hydraulic drum brake actuator with the 12 inch adjustable channel down.

Overall, the product works well. I would advise to keep tung height above level for extremely heavy loads. Otherwise, you may experience a delay in release of the brake. So far it's been a better than the Titan equivalent, partially because this system requires no grease.
