When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

EZ-Latch Coupler

Cast Coupler Cutaway

This coupler features a simple-to-use latching mechanism known as the EZ-Latch. With this mechanism, hooking up is as easy as dropping the coupler over your trailer hitch ball. The latch does not need to be tugged or manually activated to allow the ball into the coupler socket, nor does it have to be secured in place. Just make sure that the coupler is properly lined up with the ball when you lower it, and the rest is automatic. Disengaging the coupler is just as effortless. Simply lift up the handle and the coupler socket will automatically release its grip on the ball.

Demco EZ-Latch in Use

The contoured, low-profile design of the latch handle helps protect the coupler from damage by allowing any potential hazards - from debris on the road to your ball mount backing into the coupler - to simply slide over the top. This helps prevent anything from getting under the latch handle and releasing the ball, and it can also limit any damage to the coupler should an impact occur

Unlike most couplers, which have a pin hole on the handle latch, the EZ-Latch coupler features a hole on the side of the coupler itself. Inserting a coupler lock through this hole will keep the latch from lifting, preventing disconnect and theft.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

Sturdy, Corrosion-Resistant Construction

Made of sturdy steel, this hydraulic trailer brake actuator features a durable zinc coating that is designed to limit rust and corrosion. This zinc coat has a 120-hour salt spray rating. In addition, the composite master cylinder is made of corrosion-resistant glass-reinforced nylon to further ensure durability.

Great quality and price.

by:

Nice product and great price! Arrived on time!!

by:

Arrived quick (Way faster than I expected). Haven't installed yet but part is what was advertised

by:

As usual, great product, good price, super fast ship. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++++++++

by:

fit the job

by:

Looks like a good product although I haven't been able to bleed the brakes yet.

by:

I just finished the install and went well . Its was a fast install and when i call to order all the staff were very helpful

by:

Great product. It fits like a glove. All parts and component seem to be high quality.
It was a little longer than expected but still a solid piece.
Super fast delivery at no cost it is hard to beat.

by:

Far superior to the UFP junk that came on my trailer.

by:

Good price , quality and fast delivery , will buy things from etrailer again

by:

Exactly what I needed plus the best price. Shipping was free and very quick. Etrailer is always my go to for parts

by:

I was tempted to replace the parts in my old unit but figured it was more cost effective to buy a new one.
The unit bolted on perfectly and has been working flawlessly since it was installed.

by:

The bolt holes in the coupler didn't line up with my frame where I removed old part so had to cut. And the new coupler only has two bolt holes while the old one had three. I thought it would have been standardized.

by:

It would have been nice to include a set of installation instructions on the surge hitch

by:

Appears well made and designed. Like plastic master cylinder body. Iron master cylinder on unit I am replacing was hopelessly corroded to point where I couldn't get cap off reservoir.

by:

Replaced my old one with the new actuator and cannot believe how smooth it operates. No more banging or movement when I stop or go. Great product.

by:

Product arrived on time & was an exact replacement for the old one. I'm very happy!

by:

I would highly recommend this product, it was easy to install and I feel much safer on my 4 hour (each way) hauls to the ocean.

  • Picking Out Brakes for 2003 Mastercraft Maristar 210 Boat Trailer
I am sure we have a suitable replacement surge actuator for your trailer. But when I tried to look up your trailer on google every one of the pictures had the coupler cut off. If you could send me a picture of your coupler as well as the weight of your trailer when loaded I can give you our best recommendation. Do you need brake assemblies as well? That's the part that fits behind the hub/drum.

  • Can Surge Trailer Brakes Compensate for Lighter and Heavier Trailer Weights
The great thing about surge brakes like the Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit # AKFBBRK-35 that you referenced is that since they use inertia to apply the trailer brakes they do compensate for differences in trailer weights. So if you had a heavier trailer they would apply harder and for a longer time than if you were to use a lighter trailer where the trailer wouldn't be pushing on the surge actuator as hard. Electric brakes offer more adjustability but they aren't self contained like the surge...

  • How to Wire Reverse Lock Out Solenoid on Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuating Coupler
I don't have a wiring diagram, but I'd be happy to explain it for you. In order for the reverse solenoid on a Hydraulic Brake Coupler like # DM62VR to function, one of the two wires leading from it needs to be connected to the wire from the center pin of the trailer connector, which is typically the yellow or purple wire (use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to confirm). The remaining wire is grounded to the trailer frame. On the vehicle side, you'll need to make sure that the center...

  • Troubleshooting Surge Brake Boat Trailer that Makes Slamming Sound When Hitting Bumps
Is your trailer sitting as level as possible? Sounds like it could be sitting possibly nose high and combined maybe with a bit of play in the ball mount is creating the slamming you are experiencing. It's also possible your surge actuator has a bad shock and the bump is causing the actuator to apply and release the brakes quickly which is causing what you described. If you can push in on the front of the actuator you should be able to see the actuator somewhat slowly rebound to the fully...

  • Surge Brake Actuator Recommendation for Replaced Atwood Drum to Convert to Disc
Demco surge couplers like the part # DM72VR you mentioned are really great overall. We've found that they are very reliable and do a great job applying the trailer brakes. Way better than the now discontinued Atwood actuator you have that was known for problems. This part number is for drum so for a disc version you'd want the # DM62VR and you'd be set. This comes with an electric reverse lockout as well. Now I don't know your axle capacity or wheel bolt pattern so I am not able to give...

Michael, to add brakes to your Demco Kar Kaddy 3, you can use the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R35D. This will allow you to slide the rotor over the existing idler hub, and the brackets for the caliper will bolt to the brake mounting flange. You will also need to ensure that you have this type of flange on your tow dolly otherwise you may not be able to add any brakes to the system. • Trailer Coupler Needed To Convert To Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes
Hey Kelvin, From what I can find the Titan Model 6 brake actuators have their bolt holes almost in a straight line at the bottom of the coupler so you would have drill new holes in order to mount a new brake actuator. It also shows the Model 6 having a 2-5/16" ball coupler so the Demco # DM62VR and Dexter # 099-175-20 wouldn't be the right choice. If you're wanting to switch to electric over hydraulic then you'll want to go with a standard coupler like the Demco Channel Tongue Trailer...

  • Is There Demco Surge Coupler that Can be Used with Drum Brakes
Hey Al, so we have a solution but since disc brakes require a higher PSI than drum the # DM62VR would not work on drum brakes. Instead you'd want to go with the part # DM72VR which is basically the exact same thing but made for drum brakes. You can lock this to a hitch ball with the coupler lock like the InfiniteRule part # IR66FR which was designed specifically for this coupler.
