Use this actuator to synchronize your trailer brakes with your tow-vehicle brakes. Over-center latch mechanism only engages when the actuator is fully seated on 2" hitch ball. Designed for hydraulic drum brakes and 3x3 or 3x4 straight tongue.

Features:

  • Hydraulic actuator activates trailer's brakes when tow vehicle slows or stops
  • Low-profile coupler latch ensures easy, secure connection
    • Over-center latch mechanism only engages when the actuator is fully seated on hitch ball
  • Aluminum master cylinder is better at reducing corrosion than cast steel master cylinders
  • Primed finish
  • Weld-on installation
  • Manual lockout kit sold separately
  • Made in the USA

Specs:

  • Application: hydraulic drum brakes
  • Ball size: 2"
  • Mounting: 3" x 3" or 3" x 4" straight tongue
  • Capacity: 7,500 lbs
  • 2-Year limited warranty

When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Axle Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - DX53FR

Jeff: Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this Dexter DX7.5L weld-on drum brake actuator for a 2-inch hitch ball. Has a 7,500-pound weight capacity. Now you'll use this actuator to activate your trailer's brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically, when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and the momentum will push your trailer towards the rear of your tow vehicle. So with the surge brake system, the actuator here is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows.

So basically, the inside part of this actuator will telescope back. It applies force to the master cylinder in the back here, which in turn will supply the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes. If you notice on this one, it is a low profile coupler latch. There is no lever or anything sticking up. It's very low profile so there's nothing to get damaged. This will ensure a nice, easy, secure connection.

And it is an over-the-center latch mechanism. It'll only engage when the actuator's fully seated on a 2-inch hitch ball. And I happen to pull a 2-inch hitch ball, I just want to demonstrate how it installs. So what you want to do first is pull out this tethered safety pin here. Once you get that pulled out, then what you'll do is go up to the latch here, there's this round portion, just slide that. When you slide that, that'll release it and it flips up.

And now it's in the ready-to-install position so when you get out over your 2-inch inaudible 00:01:28 hitch ball, drops right into place. All you have to do is push that latch down and it's locked onto the ball. And then for extra safety, you slide this tethered safety pin right through the two holes and that'll keep it locked into place and you're ready to go.And what's nice with that safety pin if by chance this did get moved and popped open, it won't open all the way so it still stays attached to the ball. The only way to actually remove it is to slide that safety pin out, flip that latch up and then you're able to lift it up off the ball, simple as that. So it's a very nice easy connection and to disconnect it.

Now we're just going to go close that. Slide our pin back through. Now if you notice, it does also include this breakaway cable. This breakaway cable is required by law and what this does is it prevents a trailer runaway situation. You'll take this hook on the breakaway cable and hook this to your tow vehicle and then what'll happen is if by chance your trailer would come disconnected from your tow vehicle, it would pull on this cable, which would then activate the master cylinder back here to apply the brakes and prevent the trailer from a runaway situation. Now, the master cylinder on this, let me flip it upside down here so we can see the end of the master cylinder right here. You can see, the master cylinder is constructed of aluminum rather than plastic or steel. Gives you much more increased strength and corrosion resistance. And if you look up at the top here, has a nice flush brake fluid filler cap on top. It doesn't stick up tall to where it could get damaged or broken. You just unscrew that, put your brake fluid in or unscrew it and check your brake fluid level. This does have a nice prime finish on it. It is a weld-on installation. It is designed to fit 3-inch by 3-inch or 3-inch by 4-inch straight trailer tongue. This part is made in the USA. Again, the specs on this, the application's for hydraulic drum brakes. The ball size we mentioned it fits over is a 2-inch diameter hitch ball. Weight capacity is 7,500 pounds. And one last note I do want to mention on this is because this model actuator does not include a reverse lockout on the rear here, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with either an electric reverse lockout solenoid that screws into the master cylinder or a free backing brakes on your trailer so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes. But that should do it for the review on this Dexter DX7.5L weld-on drum brake actuator for a 2-inch hitch ball. Has a 7,500-pound weight capacity.

Was exactly what I was expecting, good quality, a fair price, and will fit right on my trailer tongue.
Good job!!!

Paul is awesome!!
I was very pleased
with the way he handled the order. I was going to order it online but he suggested that he could possibly have it delivered in 3-4 days. Actually it was delivered in 24 hours.
I thought [other retailers] were quick about deliveries till I ordered from etrailer.
The coupler and the brake actuator fit perfectly and definitely was a great replacement from the Atwood coupler.
Thanks. Paul.

I ordered late Tuesday evening. It shipped on Wednesday, arrived Friday and my boat trailer was fixed by Friday evening. Product was exactly as advertised and the perfect replacement for my damaged one. Quick and accurate shipping had me back out fishing by the weekend. Very impressed with etrailer service levels.

Finished drum to disc brake conversion on my 1993 year model Bass Cat trailer. Installation went smoothly and the UFP-A60 Actuator replaced the obsolete Atwood Actuator. Shortened the outer member a bit and added a 1" flat bar to the bottom for welding of 4" channel trailer frame.

Updating my old surge brake coupler, I really like this Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout - Bolt On - Disc - 2" Ball - Zinc - 7.5K fits 3”x4”trailer tongue, it was easy to install, I did have to drill new holes, I just wish the manufacturer would have included the bolts and the information on how much to torque the bolts to, it’s about “2 drop from my old coupler. etrailer was super fast with shipping !

by:

Just what I wanted. I am building a custom trailer for my vintage boat. I have used these actuators in past projects. etrailer has great pricing and fast delivery every time.

by:

Exactly what I needed. Didn't require the outer housing, the insider mechanism slid in nicely as a replacement on my trailer. The etrailer videos for installation and bleeding were very helpful.

by:

Delivery was very fast. Quality seems very good. Installation was super easy since my Shorelander swing tongue trailer has this standard hole pattern. I love how it looks and the extra foot of distance I get between the boat and my tow vehicle (so less chance of needing to get my feet wet or crawl through the SUV).

by:

Product arrived quickly (as always, thanks etrailer!) bolted direct to my shorelandr trailer without issue. it did not come with the reservoir cover or the manual lockout which was expected given it was a full tongue assembly. Also did not come with the manual (and specifically the spare breakaway clips in case the emergency cord is pulled). Save old lockout and reservoir cap if replacing a busted tongue!

by:

Have not use the Actuator yet. However it came in a oversize box. No packing material to protect it. It was damaged when I opened the box. Scratches and damage cable

by:

I’m very satisfied. I always check out etrailer for all my trailer needs and this time was no different. In under 2 hours by myself I changed out the old with the new ( pictures) and ready to bleed the brakes. I always let people know to contact etrailer with there needs. Thanks

by:

Ordered brake actuator from Etrailer after several attempts from EZTrailee with no response. Wished I had checked out Etrailer sooner. Received notification at each billing, shipping.
It was easy to find the parts got fast shipping with working brakes now, can enjoy the boat again. This is the third trailer you helped me repair with correct parts, fast shipping
Many thanks guys

by:

The product is as expected and an exact replacement for my trailer. The exceptional part of the transaction was the speed my order was filled and shipped.

by:

Amazing price for my favorite hitch, tongue actuator system made. I own 6 trailers and have had another dozen in the past. There is no better looking or functioning system .

by:

Fantastic product selection excellent customer service

by:

Great replacement for a damaged actuator. A plan came together and it don't get much better.

by:

Very sturdy material and well made. Works as designed and the electrical lock out for disc brakes is very useful.

Manual lock out lever key could be magnetized to avoid falling off.

by:

Perfect fit. I had to notch one corner where my wiring came out of the box tubing. Really nice compared to the original that was on there

by:

I slipped this into my boat mate trailer for 2001 moomba. Took about an hour to hook up and bleed the system with a buddy. Works great! If you can use simple tools and are mechanically savvy this is a no brainer.

by:

I thought the product was good quality would have been nice if it came with some instructions.

by:

It is a very quality product and exactly what I needed to repair the brakes on my Shorelander trailer. Easy to install and functions great.

by:

Simple replacement for old UFP Actuator

by:

This is a very well made Brake Actuator, with high quality and heavy duty materials. Flat top design suits my requirements of opening the tail gate without worrying about damaging the tailgate and for fixing the sticker for Ford Pro-Trailer Back up Assist. Overall, I am pretty happy with the product, pricing and prompt shipping.

However, I have two observations to make:
1. Manual lockout plate could have been tethered to receiver. Even better, fitted with a magnet so that plate does not fall off, when you are moving the trailer back and forth. There are after market products available with magnet. I improvised on my own with a piece of strong magnet from old hard drive.
2. I bought Dexter A-60 bolt-on top mount for two different trailers. I observed that in both cases, the mounting holes in the receiver does not exactly line up with holes in trailer tongue- off by about 1/16th of an inch. Looks like the inner unit welding to outer case could be the cause.

So I would rate the product as 4.5/5.

by:

The part was exactly what I needed. I gave 1 less star because the original item I requested was out of stock. Luckily I noticed that on the order status page and switched it to another item. This caused a significant delay in me receiving the part.
