Electric-hydraulic brake actuator with brake lines lets you use an electric brake controller from inside your vehicle to adjust and control your trailer's hydraulic brakes. Enjoy convenience as you achieve greater braking control and performance.

Features:

  • Electric-hydraulic brake actuator lets you use an electric brake controller from inside your vehicle to adjust and control your trailer's hydraulic brakes
  • Responds to commands from in-cab electric brake controller (sold separately) to apply trailer brakes
    • Activates trailer brakes when you apply brakes in tow vehicle
  • Includes brake line kit and standard breakaway kit
  • Gives you greater control over your trailer's brakes than that provided by standard hydraulic actuators
    • Faster response time
    • Proportional braking for smooth, effective stops
    • Quick adjustment when you change trailers or loads
  • Overcomes problems associated with standard surge brake actuators
    • No interference when you back up, even uphill - no more getting out of your vehicle to lock out brakes
    • No brake drag or pushing sensation, which can occur with surge brakes when you drive downhill
    • Improved safety - allows use of manual override feature that is included with most electric brake controllers, so you can engage the trailer brakes without having to apply your vehicle brakes
  • Constructed of extruded aluminum to resist corrosion
  • Includes built-in bleeder - lets you easily flush air out of your brakes
  • Installs on trailer, connecting into trailer's wiring and hydraulic brake lines
  • Made in the USA

Specs:

  • Application: single- or tandem-axle trailers with disc brakes
    • Requires additional hydraulic line kit (9579-01 - sold separately) for triple-axle trailers
  • Maximum output pressure: 1,600 psi
    • Check with trailer brake manufacturer for pressure specifications
  • Vehicle requires the following (sold separately):
    • In-cab electric brake controller
    • 7-Way, blade-style trailer connector mounted near the bumper (HS381-9000)
  • Actuator dimensions: 11-3/4" long x 3" wide x 7-3/8" tall
  • 2-Year limited warranty

Note: Do not power wash the Hydrastar actuator or take it through a commercial car wash. High-pressure water may damage the seals on the actuator.

The Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic trailer brake actuator applies pressure to your trailer's hydraulic brake system in response to the electrical signals sent from your in-cab brake controller. As a result, your trailer's hydraulic brakes will be activated every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle or press the manual override on your controller. You will get responsive hydraulic braking, which you control conveniently from inside your vehicle with your electric brake controller.

Hydrastar Electric-Over-Hydraulic Actuator vs Standard Surge Brake Actuators

With the Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic actuator, you can get all the benefits of towing with an electric brake controller while using hydraulic brakes. Because this actuator will activate according to the settings you have chosen for your brake controller (sold separately), you will have more control over when and how your trailer brakes engage. Depending on the features of your brake controller, you may be able to control both the rate and intensity with which your trailer's brakes activate. You can also use the manual override on your brake controller, which allows you to engage the trailer brakes without having to apply the brakes in your vehicle. And perhaps most impressive, if you have a proportional brake controller, your brakes will be activated with an intensity that matches the braking speed and power of your rig.

This pump-and-motor-based system increases response time compared with traditional actuators because the trailer brakes are triggered when you apply the brakes in the tow vehicle, as opposed to when the trailer pushes against the hitch ball. This not only gives you faster, more efficient braking, but it also eliminates the pushing sensation that occurs in setups that use standard surge brake actuators.

Hydrastar actuators are also beneficial because, unlike standard surge couplers, they allow you to activate your brakes when reversing down an incline, such as a boat ramp. Having the ability to brake in reverse gives you more control and prevents wear on your tow vehicle.

Hydrastar Installation

Hydrastar Installation Diagram

This Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic brake actuator will give you years of trailer-stopping performance. The actuator mounts on your trailer's frame with the included hardware. Then it splices into the trailer's wiring and connects to your hydraulic brake lines from the 3/16" female port. Lines and fittings are sold separately.

Durable Construction

Just like other Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic actuator models, this system is built of extruded anodized aluminum for superior corrosion resistance. The weathertight seals protect internal components from the elements.

Brake Controller Compatibility

Not all electric trailer brake controllers work with this electric-over-hydraulic brake actuator. See the following table to determine compatibility with common models of brake controllers. For best performance, it is recommended that you use an aftermarket electric brake controller rather than an OEM factory-installed controller.

Was a great tease, received box 4 of 4 and had to wait until Monday for the rest to arrive, the boxes were a bit hammered, and when a caliper mount bolt fell out I was worried how many other bolts had gotten lost, but everything was there. Service was great, free shipping, these were heavy boxes, and they are tough to pack well so they don't pop open. Thanks to the order staff and especially Sammi G for getting my order straightened out from my miss ordered parts, will be ordering my trailer parts from them again!

This has been the best upgrade hands down that I could have done, and Im sure when it comes to stopping quickly, there is no better choice than a hydraulic electric disk brake system

by:

Actuator has worked flawlessly for a year now on our 27 ft. travel trailer. Too bad I didn't get the correct sized brake line with the parts; had to wait for over a week for the replacement. And the break away pin that came with the kit broke while I tried pulling it out before I even installed it. Contacted etrailer and they said a new one would be sent to me. I'm still waiting after a year!

by:

Works perfectly, much better than the surge brakes it replaced. Tows better, no banging back and forth. I installed myself, and I'm no mechanic,

by:

Has worked flawlessly since installation. Braking has been improved immensely.

by:

The brakes work great once they start to apply. The problem with the electric over hydraulic system is they don't come on the minute you apply the brake pedal. It takes time for the electric pump to build up some pressure.

It should not take that long for your electric over hydraulic brakes to react. You will want to bleed your brakes again to make sure that there is no air in the system. Also, if you an OEM brake controller you will need to replace that with a brake controller that is designed to work with electric over hydraulic systems, like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional Part # 90195.

by:

Little dissapointed to see corrosion/rust on some of the fittings after only three months. Why wouldn't all fittings be stainless steel for something made to go in water!?

Etrailer Expert

Jenny N.

6/16/2022

You mentioned that the fittings were showing some signs of rust. The brake lines that we carry that are stainless steel typically will have fittings that are not and therefore can rust. I recommend looking at a brake line kit like part # 20TR-BLKIT which has brass fittings or you can also use a product like Never-Seez to protect the current fittings.

by:

This brake kit has held up very well! It came with plenty of adapters, tees, hoses, and pipe to make hydraulic brakes a reality on any two-axle trailer. I bought hoses and pipe for a third trailer and the brake actuator has no problem stopping my fully-loaded stacker trailer with three axles.

by:

I can't say enough good things about the staff at etrailer. They helped me pick out the correct items to install disc brakes on my boat trailer and the technical staff was extremely helpful in helping me better understand how to perform the installation. This was the first time I ever install a new brake system and their help enabled me to easily and successfully complete the installation. A+ for the product quality and for etrailer staff!

hydrastar brake kit best thing you can install for safty on a trailer

by:

Like the disc brake over the drums they work great. But they need to sell them as a kit for the different axle sizes instead of pieces. Other then that they are worth the money.

by:

Best upgrade I have purchased. Decreased stopping distance by 50%. Smooth stopping and immediate. No lag like electric

by:

Still one of the best trailer related purchases I ever made!!!

by:

Has been in use on the trailer for a year now and has performed as expected.

by:

Pat C was very helpful and patient. I received all my packages two days after ordering. Thanks for your great costumer service.
