Note: Do not power wash the Hydrastar actuator or take it through a commercial car wash. High-pressure water may damage the seals on the actuator.

The Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic trailer brake actuator applies pressure to your trailer's hydraulic brake system in response to the electrical signals sent from your factory brake controller. As a result, your trailer's hydraulic brakes will be activated every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle or press the manual override on your controller.

Hydrastar Electric-Over-Hydraulic Actuator vs. Standard Surge Brake Actuators

With the Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic actuator, you can get all the benefits of towing with an electric brake controller while using hydraulic brakes. Because this actuator will activate according to the settings you have chosen for your factory brake controller, you will have more control over when and how your trailer brakes engage. Depending on the features of your brake controller, you may be able to control both the rate and intensity with which your trailer's brakes activate. You can also use the manual override on your brake controller, which allows you to engage the trailer brakes without having to apply the brakes in your vehicle. And perhaps most impressive, if you have a proportional brake controller, your brakes will be activated with an intensity that matches the braking speed and power of your rig.

This pump-and-motor-based system increases response time compared with traditional actuators because the trailer brakes are triggered when you apply the brakes in the tow vehicle, as opposed to when the trailer pushes against the hitch ball. This not only gives you faster, more efficient braking, but it also eliminates the pushing sensation that occurs in setups that use standard surge brake actuators.

Hydrastar actuators are also beneficial because, unlike standard surge couplers, they allow you to activate your brakes when reversing down an incline, such as a boat ramp. Having the ability to brake in reverse gives you more control and prevents wear on your tow vehicle.

Durable, Marine-Grade Construction

The Hydrastar Marine actuator is ideal for use on boat trailers. Just like other Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic actuator models, this system is built of extruded anodized aluminum for superior corrosion resistance. The weathertight seals protect internal components from the elements. The Hydrastar Marine actuator also features marine-grade gaskets and stainless steel hardware that won't rust. These extra features make it perfect for marine applications.

This actuator also has a vented end plate that releases pressure, moisture, and heat to help prevent any internal damage. Unlike models that are unable to release heat and pressure, this vented actuator can be safely mounted inside of a compartment on your trailer. As a result, this actuator is great for gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers where finding space on the tongue can be nearly impossible.

Video Transcript for Review of Hydrastar Brake Actuator - Electric-Hydraulic Brake Actuator - HS481-8065

Hello, everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this HydraStar plug and play drum brake electric-over-hydraulic actuator system for factory brake controllers. Now this HydraStar plug and play system makes installing your hydraulic brake system a snap. The plug and play is designed for simple, easy installation with no hardwiring required. The system is designed to work with your factory brake controller. The system will include everything shown here on the table, starts with the HydraStar actuator.

Again, it's plug and play design, the breakaway battery kit and the breakaway cable, again, plug and play design, the plug and play seven-way harness, and right over here is the control adaptor module, which again is a plug and play design. The electric-over-hydraulic brake actuator will activate your trailer's hydraulic brakes when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle. The factory brake controller will send a signal from your tow vehicle to your actuator when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle. The improved functionality is, compared to surge brake couplers, this will give you a faster response time. The trailer brakes are triggered when you apply the brakes in the tow vehicle, as opposed to when the trailer pushes against the hitch ball, like in a surge coupler, and there's no need to manually lock out the brakes when you back up.

The trailer brakes can be intentionally activated when you reverse. Does have a manual override on the brake controller that can be activated so you can engage the trailer brakes without having to apply your vehicle brakes. On this actuator, at the very back here, you can see the vent down here. So there's this vented end plate, which will release pressure, moisture, and heat in order to protect the internal components. This allows this actuator to be mounted in places where most actuators would overheat.

So as a result, this actuator's great for gooseneck and fifth wheel trailers where finding space on the tongue can be almost impossible. Does use an electronic proportional pressure valve to ensure that the braking is smooth and effective. Right up at the top here has this built-in bleeder screw to let you easily flush air out of your brake lines. It is made of a durable extruded aluminum, provide superior corrosion resistant, does use marine-grade gaskets and stainless steel hardware, makes it ideal for marine use. Now this part right up here, this is the control adaptor module.

This is included for compatibility with your Ford, your Dodge or your GM factory brake controller. This module allows this actuator to work with your factory brake controller. And again, it's an easy plug and play install, no hardwiring is required. Now this kit is DOT, Department of Transportation, compliant. The unit will install on the trailer frame and connects to your trailer's wiring and the hydraulic brake lines. Few specs on this, the application. This is for single-, tandem-, or triple-axle trailers with drum brakes. Maximum output pressure is 1000 PSI. The power is 12 volts DC. And the last thing I wanna do is just give you a dimension on the actuator. So if you're wondering where to install it, they give an idea of the length on this, the overall length. And we're gonna measure including the mounting plates right at the bottom there, it right at 11 3/4 inches long. The width of it at the widest point is only gonna be right about three inches wide. And then the overall height is gonna be about 7 3/8 inches tall. But that should do it for the review on this HydraStar plug and play drum brake electric-over-hydraulic actuator system for your factory brake controllers..

  • Is a Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Adapter Module Needed on a 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD
What we have found is the integrated trailer brake controllers on trucks can be very temperamental when used with electric over hydraulic brakes. I do recommend using a HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Adapter Module # HBA-CAM with your factory brake controller on your 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD. This will prevent an issue from the start or developing over time since vehicles can now receive over the air updates that could cause an issue. If you are installing the electric over...
