When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Electric reverse lockout with solenoid is automatically activated when the tow vehicle is shifted into reverse. To use this feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round or 7-pole wiring harness.

etrailer.com is a great company to do business with, and they definitely get 5 stars from me. Great website (love the videos and things are easy to find) , great selections, good prices, fast delivery, great customer support, etc. Now, for the surge actuator...

I'll give the surge actuator 5 stars, too, but with some hesitation about a couple of minor things. First, let me say that I was absolutely thrilled with the performance of the actuator on its first road trip. We have a 5000 lb. combined boat and trailer weight, and while creeping down a very steep hill, just to see what things felt like, having the trailer behind me didn't feel any different than just driving my Yukon without the trailer. Also, stopping and then starting up from a stop sign was as smooth as silk -- no jerking or tugging feeling whatsoever. After pulling the trailer for about 30 minutes, I stopped and measured the temperature of the trailer wheels near the hubs, and they were at 75-80 degrees on a 60-degree day. Like I said, I was trilled, especially after previously dealing with an actuator that performed badly in all of the ways that this new one performed so well. That's why I'm giving the actuator 5 stars, but like I said, it's with some hesitation and here's why...

I'm not sure I'm a fan of the screw-type ball latch that's on the actuator. I wrestled with it for a long time before I finally figured out what was wrong and managed to get the latch onto the hitch ball. There's a small rectangular bracket on the bottom side of the latching mechanism, and it holds the hex head of the bolt that you're screwing down on when the latch is closing. The latch is spring loaded, so normally that little bracket is held in place where it needs to be, but if the spring is compressed, it's possible for the little rectangular bracket to get turned 90 degrees from where it should. And if that happens, you're not gonna get a 2" ball onto that actuator -- I tried and failed for a long time. The other thing that causes some hesitation is that that latch mechanism seems like it might not be quite as corrosion proof as I would hope. I've decided to spray it with WD-40 to see if that helps to keep it in good shape.

I'm including 3 photos with this review. One shows the little rectangular bracket that holds the bolt's hex head in its correct position, another shows what the latch should look like when it's fully opened, and the third shows the beginning signs of a little corrosion after the actuator has been outside for only a couple of weeks. We did launch the boat once in salt water, but I don't think the actuator got wet when we did it, so I think the slight corrosion is just from being outside in the rain, and not from salt water exposure.

Like I said, the actuator performed extremely well, so even with the minor criticisms, I'll still give it 5 stars. And etrailer definitely gets 5 stars!

I installed this new actuator, since my old one was leaking fluid. The installation was straightforward and I had no issues bleeding the new actuator. I had an issue with the ball retainer (it was a cast part, not a stamped part like my old unit) engaging and releasing from my 2" ball. I contacted etrailer and explained the issue and Tiffany immediately sent me a replacement kit for the ball retainer free of charge! I installed the kit, and it works perfectly! Thank you Tiffany and etrailer for helping and responding so quickly and professionally to my issue!

This Actuator is perfect for my project; a light weight tear drop trailer. Really well made, and the shipping and customer service is really first rate. Great to deal with etrailer. More later after I get a chance to test it.

  • Disc Brakes Do Not Appear To Be Working Properly On Tandem Boat Trailer With Surge Coupler
It sounds like you have been testing this system quite a lot. There are several steps you can follow to trace where the problem is. First, you did not say if this is a new brake system with disc brakes and was upgraded from drum brakes. If that is the case, the actuator should have been upgraded as well. The disc brakes require a higher amount of pressure to work than the drum brakes. If you have a disc brake actuator you can move on. Next, check the calipers, and rotors for signs of...

  • Parts Needed To Upgrade Drum Brakes on Boat Trailer to Disc Brakes
Given the size of your wheels and the bolt pattern, it's likely that you have a 3500 lb axle. You can confirm this by checking the reference numbers on your inner and outer wheel bearings. The reference number can be found on the side of the bearing cages. If you have an L68149 Inner and an L44649 outer bearing, and the diameter of the spindle where the grease seal rides is 1.719 inches in diameter, I'd recommend the Kodiak 10 inch hub/rotor kit, part # K2HR35D. • Bleeding a Manual Actuator like the Titan Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout
Yes you are exactly right. You want to bleed the Titan Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout part # T4745720 after you have the lines installed and it can be bled just like you do normal brakes. You can use a power bleeder or the way I prefer by hooking the safety chains together and using a lever to manually operate or push the actuator. Either way is effective just ensure you do not have any power going to the lockout solenoid so the fluid will flow freely.

I also recommend using the Kodiak Hydraulic Brake Line Kit - Single Axle - 18' # 18SI-BLKIT which will give you flexibility for your brake calipers and folding coupler connection. Then you can use the Titan Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout - Disc - Multi-Fit Ball - Bolt...

  • Replacement Surge Brake Actuator For Tandem Axle Boat Trailer with Disc Brakes
Thank you for the pictures! I sent them to my contact at Titan and he said that you have the Titan Model 60 but that it was installed inside of the trailer tongue instead of on top of the tongue as designed. He mentioned that you will be able to use the Titan Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout # T4745720 which will work with disc brakes, is rated to 6000lbs, and will accept a 2" or 1-7/8" hitch ball. • Electric Trailer Brakes Recommendation for a 1,400 lb Loaded Trailer
For that light of a trailer I would recommend you go with electric brakes. I would be concerned that the surge brakes would not activate properly, and since there is no adjustment for them you would be in a bind. One of the advantages to electric brakes is that they are able to be fine tuned easily and efficiently. To see everything you would need to install electric brakes on your trailer check out the FAQ article I attached on that subject. For a brake controller I would strongly recommend...

  • What is Needed to Replace Hydraulic Drum Brakes with Disc Brakes?
You can definitely replace your current brakes with a disk brake set up. However, there are a few things that will need to be checked and upgraded to accomplish this task. First, you will need to determine which inner and outer bearings fit your spindle. As an example, the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 10" Hub/Rotor - 5 on 4-1/2 - Dacromet - 3,500 lbs # K2HR35D is designed to fit spindles with an # L68149 inner bearing and # L44649 outer bearing on a 3,500 pound axle. • Disc Brake Surge Coupler for a Tow Dolly
Your best pick is the Titan Zinc-Plated Actuator, part # T4745720, which includes an electric backup lockout and compatibility with disc brakes. This kit will bolt onto your tow dolly and is rated for up to 6000 pounds. I did check into your owner's manual and it looks like the 2015 Jeep Wrangler two door variants are only rated to tow 2000 pounds, and I'd recommend using another tow vehicle if possible.

For a replacement master cylinder on your Dico Model 60 Actuator for drum brakes, you will need part # T4395100. The 85837 master cylinder and Atwood brake actuators have all been discontinued which explains why you have been unable to find the right parts. This means that your best option is to replace the entire brake actuator. The Brake Actuator # T63FR you are referencing was something suggested as a replacement. Both options have the same weight rating, fit on a 3" wide channel tongue, and have mounting bolts holes with 3" on center distances between them. For your brake actuating coupler, I recommend the Titan Zinc-Plated, Leverlock Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout - Disc - Adjustable Ball - 6,000 lbs # T4745720.
