How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

We replaced our 3500 lb jack with this one because we wanted something faster and stronger and this jack is all of that. However, the number 1 reason we bought this jack is that it is easy to mount the head 90 degrees so that you can easily drop your tailgate down while hitched to our camper. It was easy to mount and it works like a charm.

Comments
The jack is still working great.

We use this on a portable egg mobile in Maui, HI with very rough agricultural terrain. It gets moved 2 times a week and it is working like a charm! Saves lots of time in the field. Mahalo Nui Loa - Thanks very much, for a great product.
Attached is a construction photo of the egg mobile.

Great service....from ordering assistance to delivery (we ordered the wrong part first try, but noticed it overnight and called for assistance the next day.) Really like the way the jack is designed. Smaller top side so may clear the tailgate when hitched up. Great service from retailer. Ordered one day, received the next. Nice long wires for easy routing, shorter in my case. Runs nice and smooth. Would recommend this unit.

Review from a similar UF Tongue Jack in Camper Jacks

Nice jack . Fit up on travel trailer was good did have to take 3/16 off the back of round mounting plate so it would not hit the battery box I did check with Ultra-fab and they got back to me the same day ,wanted to make sure this would not effect warranty . well built and quality was very good . So much better then my old jack .

Review from a similar UF Tongue Jack in Camper Jacks

My previous electric jack shorted out while I was not home, and my battery exploded. I specifically bought this jack to plug it in when ready to use. A little inconvient, but worth the peace of mind. I have to have my engine running in order to operate the jack. Not true for all towing vehicles.

Review from a similar UF Tongue Jack in Camper Jacks

The three items we ordered arrived on time. The electric jack was easy to install, 3 bolts and 1 wire. Took less then an hour. It makes hitching and unhitching our Keystone Hideout much easier.
Customer service was very helpful when we called to add a third item to our order.
No Hassle!

Absolutely perfect in fact I used my trailer today, I had a little trouble with my first electric jack , You couldn’t ask for a better company they sent me another jack under warranty I returned the old one in the same box, took it to UPS done. It’s very satisfying to deal with an American company that really stands behind their product. Thank You

Excellent product, would have given 5 star if the cord was 12”-18” longer. The bag that covers the head is trash though.

First I would like to compliment the excellent customer service received upon ordering. Now to the product- The electric jack with a 4000 lb. rating came in tip top condition with-in two business days. Was a total breeze to install, maybe 30 minutes.

The quality of the jack seems very well made and upon operation lifted our BBQ concession trailer effortlessly. We opted to install a 7 way connector so the unit could be operated off the tow vehicle rather then an external battery.

This connector is well made durable plastic and was also a breeze to connect. The units wiring is 10 gauge wire (2) blk. ground and red power. Very pleased with the entire set up.

Review from a similar UF Tongue Jack in Camper Jacks

ordered this evening of 1st- arrived afternoon of 4th, very fast. installation was very easy especially since there is no wiring. registered for warranty, cord is just long enough to hook up without connecting to trailer, and it works great. Bought this model because it has fitting to grease it, and has cord to hook up to vehicle(no wiring) price is good. If you use a load equalizing hitch it is very difficult to raise the back of vehicle and trailer tongue by hand without an electric lift.

Bought Pro Series Weight Dist Hitch, Jameson C was very helpful picking the right one out , ordered it on Friday and it arrived on Wednesday a day earlier than expected. Placed a second order for an electric jack and misc. parts. Extremely happy with their service. I don't review stuff but these guys deserve one.

Review from a similar UF Tongue Jack in Camper Jacks

I just installed the Tongue Jack last weekend. The install was very simple although I added a simple anti-theft device in the form of a kill switch. I placed a switch inside my trailer that allows me to disconnect the power to the jack while it is stored at my shop. Installing the jack was as simple as bolting it onto the trailer and attaching the wires!

  • Troubleshooting Electric Trailer Jack that Will Extend But Not Retract
There are a few possible reasons why your electric A-frame jack is extending fine but you are having trouble retracting. If the motor is not running at all when you push retract on the jack, the switch itself is likely the issue and it just needs to be replaced. If you can hear the motor running when you hit retract but are getting very little or no movement, it's possible that the jack has been over extended. This can cause damage to the threads on the nut and other internal components....

  • Troubleshooting Powered Trailer Tongue Jack
Some powered tongue jacks like the Husky Brute # HT87247 use the mounting flange that bolts to the trailer frame to make the necessary ground connection. Other jacks like the Ultra-Fab # UF38-944014 use a separate ground wire. Either way that clean bare metal-to-bare metal contact is essential for the jack to operate properly. A weak ground may allow the jack to function under some conditions but it is possible that it may not allow full current to reach the motor. Switches certainly can...

  • Sluggish Operation From Husky Brute Electric Trailer Jack
The issue you are having with your Husky Brute Electric Trailer Jack part # HT87247 could be caused by a lack of power at the battery, insufficient ground, or possibly a failing motor. I first recommend that you check that your battery is fully charged using a volt meter. If the battery is fully charged then I suggest removing the jack, sanding down the mounting surface, and then reattaching with new hardware. If neither of these fix the sluggish operation you might want to consider getting...

  • Troubleshooting an Ultra-Fab 4000 Electric Tongue Jack That Keeps Blowing Fuses
Usually when something like your Ultra-Fab 4000 Electric Jack # UF38-944014 is blowing fuses in this manner it's because there is an overload of power caused by a short on the system. This could be from a faulty ground wire or an exposed power wire that is touching the frame of the trailer. I would start by examining the wires that you've got connected to the jack to make sure that there isn't any damaged wire that could be making contact with the trailer and causing this short. • My Discontinued Husky Brute Trailer Jack will not Operate when it Gets Hot what Could be the Issue
Jack like the discontinued Husky Brute Electric Trailer Jack does not have a temp. switch in them and I have never heard of this happening before. The only thing I can think of is that there is a wire that is close to coming loose and when the jack expands slightly from the heat it no longer makes contact. I hate to say replace something that works most of the time but if you inspect it and do not see anything loose internally it sounds like it is on it's way out. If this is the case...

Take a look at the Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack, # UF38-944014 with 2-1/4 inch outer tube diameter, and # UF38-944016 with 2 inch outer tube diameter. Both of these jacks could be mounted so that the motor housing is facing the front of the trailer or either side of the trailer. Mounting it to the side will give you a little over 2 inches of additional clearance.
