How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Jack is fine, mechanically and electrically. But the plastic lens over the LED lamp would not fit properly, no matter what I did. So I had to use silicone caulk to seal it up.

We actually sold that trailer, so I have no idea.

I will give 10 stars to etrailer and its employees. My 1st replacement jack didn't make out so well after a trip on the Long Island Expressway. I contacted the company, and a replacement was on the way in short order. Thank you!
The product itself does seem above average and appears great for the price point. Very easy install. I suggest taking your time with the electrical connection and hooking right up to the point of contact instead of a splice if you can, there's plenty of wire. I now cover the unit with a plastic bag, as my original lasted only 5 years and the insides were all waterlogged and rusted when it failed.

by:

The jack showed up with a damaged top cover and it was missing one of the three star washers used for the bolts. I was able to use one of the old washers and etrailer was very quick to send me a replacement cover with no questions or charges. 5 stars for customer support and service! 4 stars for the jack, works fine but it should not have showed up with the two issues and it was still sealed in the box so it wasn't someone else's return.

This was purchased for my 24 foot enclosed car hauler. Overall I think this is a decent purchase, priced under $120.

The fuse should come from the factory with dielectric grease packed in the little holder as it is located outside of the housing and it's in a pretty rough environment. The power lead length is plenty long for connecting to either a battery mounted on the tongue or service box that all of your trailer wires go into- This is where I wired mine into. I actually used a grommet to plug the hole that the manufacturer ran the power wire through and drilled another hole on the other side so the wire would run straight down the correct side of the jack and into the service box.

One of the screws that mounts the black housing on to the metal frame was pulled through by the time it arrived, so I am used washers when I reinstalled them to help prevent this from happening again.

Other notes:
I will need to get a longer hitch now, as my tailgate will hit the jack housing, and I did purchase a cover for the jack from the recommended bar at the bottom when I purchased this jack.

Final:
I've only cycled it up and down twice but it worked nicely and quietly so overall I am very pleased with my purchase

Still working well, over a year later. From -30f to 90f and I havent had an issue, except for the light lense got busted. I keep a cover over it which I believe 100 makes a world of difference.

This little rig has teeth! Much faster than i expected. About a 30 minute installation from old lift removal to new and wiring. Super simple. Great addition to my hangar 18!

by:

I decided to try this after the warranty ran out on my 4th SmartJack. So far, so good. Installation took about 30 minutes. That's with removing and reinstalling the propane tanks and tray for easier access. The power wire could have been a bit longer and the instructions will be difficult if you are not mechanically inclined. No illustrations. I love the fuse location. Much easier to access. If I don't edit my review, you may assume it's still working.

by:

Shaft is 2 1/4 inch in exterior diameter. The tongue on the Jayco Feather Sport trailer has an upper and a lower plate that the shaft must fit thru. The upper plate hole is 2 1/4 inch but the lower plate hole is only 2 1/16 thus the jack can not be mounted unless you drill the lower hole out to 2 1/4 inch. I did this but most people would not have the time or tools to under take this and would sent the jack back. The literature indicated that this jack fit this trailer.

by:

Works very well on our Lance 1475. My reason for giving it less than 5 stars is the wiring provided for the positive lead. It’s too short to run it properly secured between the jack and the battery box, the manufacturer should add another 12” or so. I had to splice more wire in to make the connection and be able to secure the wire along the trailer frame. Also, a little heavier gauge wire would be a good idea for the amps this unit is pulling. Other than that, the form, fit and function are perfect.

by:

I put this electric jack on a duel axle enclosed 16 foot trailer that I hold my off-road car, tools, spare tires, fuel containers and more. So far this electric jack has worked flawlessly.

Comments
This electric trailer jack stopped working about 4 months ago. It didn’t even last 2 seasons for us. Now I need to raise and lower my trailer by the hand crank, and being handicap makes it very difficult.

Got here quickly and was just what I wanted, easy to install actually took as long to hook up the wire as did to install. I would definitely recommend this Ram Jack to anyone wanting a electric tongue jack …

Installed the new RAM electric tounge jack on my enclosed car hauler trailer. Very happy with this unit. Quick install, like the adjustable foot pad, and operated smoothly. etrailer packages well and deliveries quick.

The Jack seems to be great quality and was very easy to install. At first I was a bit perturbed with the lack of detail and small font of the one page directions, but it’s as simple as 3 bolts and one wire to the battery(the hack is grounded inside). It raises my 2017 Jayco Baja much higher than stock crank jack. I hope it lasts the test of time as I am very happy with it this first day. The light seems bright as well.

My second jack from E Trailer, previous jack was very dependable and worked very well for years.
This one will replace the previous jack which as damaged by user forgetting to retract it before attempting to drive off, no fault of the previous jack. E Trailer service, quality and price is fantastic.
All of my RV club fellow members are E trailer fans. ??

by:

Electric jack has exceeded my expectations by lifting the trailer off the hitch. The trailer is a 16ft tandem flatbed and weighs quite quite a bit. The electric jack lifts it with ease even with something in it.
Great purchase!

by:

I bought this jack after doing a lot of research. The conclusion I came to was that most of these electric jacks are basically the same design with a different name stamped on them. I like how this one has an inline fuse, a higher lift range, and an adjustable footplate. I read a lot of forums, Facebook pages and reviews on a variety of websites. Etrailer offered the best option for what I was looking for. This jack is well made. It's heavy and solid. It was super easy to install. If you can't install this, you probably shouldn't be pulling a trailer. It was literally 3 bolts and a ring terminal. The wire lead does not come with a ring terminal attached. You have to add your own, which is no big deal. It comes this way so you can cut the excess wire to fit your application. It also came with 3 washers and 3 star washers to ensure a good ground connection on the wiring. The light is super bright as well. Etrailer kept me up to date the whole way through the ordering and shipping process. This was my first purchase from them and it was a great experience.

by:

Fast shipping, box intact with all items. Install and fit were perfect. Goes up and down, the LED light operates correctly. Quality and price seem about right. Replaced manual jack (same brand, RAM) on travel trailer. Expect to drop and hook trailer about 20 times a year. Have 1,000Lbs tongue weight as well as lifting up to set weight distribution arms.

by:

Everything was Delivered quickly. The plug fixed my issues with my trailer brakes and the new jack is so much better than the manual recommend it to everyone easy install

by:

We purchased this for our camper. Overall, the jack is a good purchase. It has plenty of power for the camper. However, the electrical cord attached to the jack was too short and there was one lock washer and one regular washer missing. Also, there was no instructions on how to connect it, so I looked it up on[line]. Other than that, it's a good purchase.

I have installed the tongue lift on my camper . It fit perfectly and it operated just fine . No problems so far . I used a small battery clip on the hot wire from the lift and when I need to use it I simply clip it to the 12 volt battery on my camper . The way my camper is wired the ground wire from the camper to the battery has to be hooked up in order for the lift to operate . But I am very happy with it so far . By the way what is the warranty on the lift ? Sending pictures also of installation .

I bought this jack to replace a Smart Jack on which the buttons/membrane broke. I have used this RAM jack for a year and have had no problems. The one minor annoyance is that I cannot open my tailgate with this jack while I could with the previous jack. I keep my jack head covered with an Ultra Fab protective cover.

by:

The unit came with a cracked cover over the light. I could work with that but the big problem is that the inner tube will not come down. The big inner screw is jammed and will not allow either the motor or the crank to lower the leg. I have taken a number of these kinds of jacks apart and I believe that the top of the large inner screw shaft is not properly set in the nut that is turned by the crank/motor.

by:

This trailer jack was almost exactly what I was expecting. Just be aware that the jack does not come with the bolts that are needed to mount it to the trailer. You will need 3 bolts (3/8”) to complete the install if you don’t already have a jack mounted.

by:

Very solid and heavy duty jack, with bright LED lighting, manufactured by Ram. Adjustable foot piece for quicker adjusting... Jack pretty easy to install, with single wire electrical connection and 3 bolts. Jack has low gear ratio and foot shaft moves slowly, but has plenty of power to lift front of trailer. Plenty of clearance behind jack for propane tank cover on our Airstream. Replaced more expensive model that was bent at mounting flange being winched onto transport trailer.

Comments
Jack is still slow and steady and has worked perfectly since installation... The adjustable foot unit is about an inch too tall for at lowest position some sites, based on low hitchball height of our tow vehicle, but we have used the shorter foot from prior jack as an alternate, and that solved problem...
