This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery and connect it to the positive terminal. Then insert the included fuse into the integrated fuse holder.
Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.
It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.
A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.
Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.
Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.
Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

I came across this site by accident and am glad I did. My girlfriend and I do a lot of canoeing and have been dealing with portage problems. This will now allow her to pull a small trailer behind her Prius for the canoe when needed for the 2nd vehicle.
The installation was simple and straightforward enough that with my guidance she was able to do both the hitch and the wiring harness with me as HER assistant.We almost didn't go this route because of other makers' products having to be spliced into the harness.

The only glitch was the extremely convoluted way Toyota hides the connectors inside the rear hatch. Once I figured out where they were, the installation went very smoothly.

Good kit. Only negative of the kit was that the double sided adhesive tape for the power module was not particularly sticky, an issue remedied with a piece of additional double sided foam tape.
It fit perfectly and was simple to inst all.
While easy enough to install, there is an issue with the bulbs. Perhaps it is because the trailer (with two kayaks on it) is quite lightweight, but the bulbs go out every time I use the trailer. I’m thinking there may be a better light system for my trailer.
No instructions in box, but very simple to install. Second time purchaser, love the product and love the brand Curt.
Complete kit, easy to install in less than an hour on my 2010 Prius. No need for a multimeter no stripping wires and no drilling since I connected the negative wire to the battery and the module mounts with double sided tape. Trailer lights are nice and bright and correct. This is the way to go.
Jacob - 09/18/2017It was very easy to install and use, and tuck out of the way when not needed. I use it many times over the past year on my 05 Prius for towing a utility trailer (have also installed overload springs). I have been very happy with the product and have recommended it to friends.
Bob J - 03/10/2017Went on without a glitch. Lights work right from the first hook up and every time! Will have to somehow secure the flat wire inside the trunk before it gets caught by the trunk latch - couple of pieces of velcro might do the trick.

Installed this on my 2013 Prius to tow my 8 foot trailer. This system included eveything I needed except for smaller hands to get into the tight spaces that Toyota provides.
Other than the ergonomics, which isn't the fault of eTrailer or Curt, this was a plug and play operation with clear and concise instructions.
I normally have the flatpack pigtail under the floormat, resting on top of the spare tire, so when it is not in use, there is no interference.
I give this device 5 stars, and have no problem recommending it to others.
I also give 5 stars to eTrailer for their prices and shipping speed.
You can't go wrong with this T connector harness, and eTrailer.
I have Thule 990XT hitch rack that I bought from ETrailer mounted on a 2005 Toyota Prius. A unique problem arose with it - the thin rear turn indicator lights are blocked by the rack in its up position, which led to a number of angry drivers honking at me and a couple of near collisions on the highway entering a lane that a driver two lanes over was also entering.
I found that expert Mike L of Etrailer had posted a suggested fix of mounting the Rola LED light kit for cargo carriers on the rack and connecting it to the car with the Curt Wiring Harness. My mounting is a bit kludgy but durable and functional. In fact, the lights hang so that they operate in both the up and down position of the rack.

Cheap and easy, but in cold weather the fuse trips and I had trouble on my Prius.
A co-worker told me of the great experiences he has had with etrailer which prompted me to check them out. My order and delivery process was very seamless. External packaging could have been a little more robust as one end of the hitch (Draw Tite) wore through the box. Thankfully, the loose items were not only bagged, but secured with additional taping to the hitch. The particular hitch I purchased installed in a little over an hour and the wiring harness (Curt - C56147) installed in about 1-1/2 hr.
We are purchasing a light-weight camper, 265 lbs with 18 lb tongue weight, and plan to use our Prius to seek out adventures in the great outdoors.
[Online] videos of installation helped build my confidence to install myself. I would order from etrailer.com again.
The trailer wiring harness kit fitted well on the Prius. Neat installation. When not in use the trailer wiring is out of site in the rear storage compartment, and deploys easily out of the hatchback. Worked perfectly ever since, coupled to a GO camper (840lb). The installation videos are very good.
