Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

I had this installed by a mechanic. The installation is difficult if you don't have a lift and all the tools. However, once installed, the product works great. I highly recommend this product.

Worked out perfect. I traded the vehicle and it helped with the trade in value.

by:

I installed the kit. It worked ok for the 2-3 times I used it. I believe on the third time I used it I noticed the running lights on one side were on in even though I didn't have then on. The brake lights and turning lights were not working. I managed to get through the short trip on that day and checked all the wiring. I hadn't made any mistakes installing the kit. Next time I hooked things up the fuse had blown. I took the vehicle to my cousin who has a business for pickup trucks. He took the taillights out and said one of the wires in the harness had pulled out. He said the wire was not secured in it's place when the harness was assembled. There was no way to see that when I installed the unit. I threw the unit away and my cousin installed another brand unit.

Wiring harness has quit working less than a year after purchase, one trailer brake light is always on, neither of the turn signals or the other brake light is still working.

It sounds like the harness has shorted out. To do a bit of trouble shooting, start by using a circuit tester to check the functions at the 4 flat connector. Also check the ground wire remains as a good solid ground to bare metal. You can then next check the signal of the wires leading into the converter box and out of the converter box. If you have a signal entering in the box and not out the other side then the harness will need to be replaced. I have a FAQ below that can help with testing the harness.

Easy to install, I like how it isolates the electrical system and it works great. Your video instructions were outstanding. With the video a five year old could install the wiring. This was installed in my 2019 Kia Sorento. The first pix shows in the back very low profile, the second pix shows inside the engine compartment, truly cool.

Ive had no issues at all. Works great. I did bottom-out once but it was my fault, deep ravine. The hitch seems to stabilize my rear end somewhat. Dont know if its good or bad. Forgot to mention, your wiring harness is super cool and easy to install.

by:
2019 Kia Sorento

These were exactly what I needed. The only things I wish were different was the hitch is very heavy and the bolt alignment was a little off which made it hard to get all bolts in. The wiring kit is good. If your able to put your vehicle on a lift, it would be recommended to make it easier to run the power cable. Overall this is a good aftermarket kit.

2014 Kia Sorento

This is the second trailer wiring harness that I have installed on a Kia Sorento. The first was on my 2012 Sorento. This one is on my 2014 Sorento. Having used the online video installation instructions the first time around and having no problems, I went straight to the video for my 2014 Sorento. The Curt T-Connector kit makes wiring easy. No splicing, just plug in the matching connectors, mount the power converter and run a few wires for a ground and forward to your battery. Hiding the wires behind the hitch as per the instructions with cable ties gives a clean look. I also mounted a Curt plug receptacle to the hitch so that the connector is not just hanging on the safety chain holes. As you can see from the photo I believe this gives a clean , professional look.

The trailer receiver was an easy installation, installing the wiring kit in a Kia Sorento was a pain.
We have been using the package for one year with no problems. Yes, I would order from Etrailer again.
My order was shipped promptly and arrived in good condition it was excactly as described.

by:

I finally got it installed everything works great and the instructions and pictures were a big help .the items arrived on time as you indicated and the customer service was great thank you .

by:

My husband said it works great. The only issue was he had to run a wire from the back of the vehicle to the front to the battery. But, that is just because of the vehicle we have no fault of etrailer.

2015 Jeep Wrangler

This wiring harness fit as it should on my 2021 jeep wrangler 4xe. I am quit happy with the results. There is only one item would change and it is the metal bracket that holds the 4 wire plug. It doesn't have a great design.

by:

"first impression was that this harness is pretty high quality and seems complete. as i worked with it, using the directions as needed, i felt it was easy to follow and accurate. i followed exactly what was explained for the 2 tail lights. they went somewhat smoothly, the only exception being getting them off the car. i ended up referring to several videos to get them out. what finally worked was using packaging tape attached to the long outside portion of the lens. pulling this and wedging my fingers just inside the black plastic edges on the inside. after quite a few pulls, each came loose. be sure sure to use your body as a stop, to keep the light assemblies from jerking out too far from the body, lest you break plastic or the wire connector.
for the ground and the power wires, i did things differently. basically i spliced a much longer ground wire to what was there and ran it together with the extra length of hot wire (black wire). my car has a 12V 180W cigarette type plug-in near the back on the passenger side. i opted to route the ground/hot wires behind the panels up near this cigarette plug. i cut a small hole in the bottom of the passenger light assembly plastic access panel, and routed the ground/hot wires out here nearly next to the cigarette plug. i ended up buying a fused cigarette plug and connected the ground/hot wires to it, then plugged it in. it might be nice to include a cigarette plug in the kit as i suspect all sorentos have this rear 180w outlet.
lastly, i routed the 4-pin connector wires differently too. i did not want this plug just hanging out the back of the car when in use. so, with the spare tire out of the way anyway from the hitch installation, i looked for a body plug there. i gounf 2 metal plugs about 3/4" in diameter and removed the one closest to the driver rear light assembly. i enlarged it to just barely allow the 4-pin connector to pass through (1.5" x .75"). the 4-pin connector wire are then routed and secured out of the way of the spare tire, the hitch and comes out from below the rear bumper facia besides the hitch. my trailer has a 7 blade round connector, so i needed an adapter to the 4-pin connector.
finally, the control unit is anchored with the supplied 2-sided tape below and to the right of the driver access panel. there is a flat area there that hold it securely.
... and now all camper trailer lights work as intended, night lights, brake lights, turn signals. i've attached some pics to hopefully help with the above explanation."

Good price, nice

The second install - a "Upgraded" system worked great. It was a plug 'n play so I didn't have to splice, solder and tape wires. Your video and printed instructions were very clear and spot on. Screwed the flat 4-pole mounting bracket to the hitch frame and used JB Weld to bond the flat connector to the mounting bracket.

Nicole T was a great saver of Get to g my vehicle ready to pull my trailer. The wiring harness I purchased thru a different supplier failed to ask a crucial vehicle option. It caused the wrong wiring harness to be purchased. I contacted Curt directly and Nicole T was on the job with her "A" game. She asked the right questions, allowing me to select the correct wiring harness. She arranged shipping to ensure I receive it as early as possible, the next day. Installation was quick & easy. Thank you Nicole T.

Couldn’t be happier! This was such a better experience than Amazon. I ordered one from Amazon originally, it took forever to arrive, and it didn’t fit. So I came here to etrailer the price was comparable, the quality is better, they shipped it faster(I payed for the 2 day shipping), it was easy to order, the online instructions for installation on YouTube were great. Next time I’m coming straight here.

Have had one issue with it in a year. My right rear marker light will stay on if I leave the in line fuse in when no trailer is connected. Simple enough fix I dont pull a trailer that much so I just pull the fuse when Im not using it. Not sure if its auto manufacturer issue or trailer wiring issue but eh not that hard to overcome

Sounds like this wiring harness has a bad modulite if there is still a signal on while the trailer it not connected. If your current solution of pulling the fuse becomes an issue I would recommend removing this wiring harness and replacing it with the # 118269.

2014 Kia Sorento

The f/irst unit did not work properly for the passenger side, replacement worked perfectly. 2014 Kia Sorento i4. The instructions and the video were both very incorrect for this vehicle. The installation for the power cable is the only thing you have to follow and the video shows where I ran the cable, before I viewed the video. This unit can be installed by removing the 2 tail lights if the power cable is already ran, otherwise you only have to remove 5 plastic screw plugs to remove the cover underneath the driver side of the vehicle to run the wires. Much easier if you put the rear on ramps or jack it up. The unit plugs into the drivers tail light and all of the other cables, after the black power cable is connected and you screw in the ground cable, simply drop down and you can reach them from the bottom, even with large hands. You can shine a light underneath the vehicle if you are in a poorly lit area and can look down the tail light holes to see the opening where you will reach in and pull the wires out underneath the vehicle. It is easier with the cover removed, but I did not need to do that for the re-install nor did I do it at all for the passenger side either time. I did not have to remove any of the interior, nor mess with the grommet behind the driver side interior panel. I do not have any idea, even after repeatedly viewing the video (which is much more informative for a non-mechanic than the instructions) and re-reading the instructions. Also note, this kit is plug-n-play. No blue splicing connectors like the video shows on the same page. You unplug the tail light from the car, plug the controller in (don't unwrap the driver side wires either) to the car and the other end into the tail light. This is how simple it is. Took me 1 hour to install it the first time and 45 minutes to run the power cable because I had to figure out a safe route, which turned out to be along the round wheel panel an then the same path the video shows going forward to the battery. It took about 5 minutes to do the re-install now that I knew nothing had to be removed from the vehicle except for the 2 tail lights.
5 stars for simple installation. Wish the instructions were made for someone who has never done an install before and again I have no idea what they wanted to run through the grommet. I suppose maybe they want the passenger green wire ran inside the car instead of across the hitch??? I was not able to make out what the instructions wanted- too vague. The video is not for this kit and lacked the grommet area along with how to begin the black power cable – only shows from the front of the rear wheel to the battery and has no specific instructions on how to route it.
Oh, it also tells to disconnect the existing cables, if any, going through the grommet and to be careful not to break the plastic tabs on the connector. I was not able to figure out how to unplug the connector, but luckily none of that that was needed. If it is needed, I was not able to make out what they wanted me to do with the grommet section.
In case it helps, I would do it this way:
1) Remove the 2 taillights and place them in a safe place.
2) Connect the black power cable, run it to the battery, leaving about a foot sticking out of the tail light hole. Ensure you can always get to the but connector in the future.
3) Watch the video and ensure the ground wire and screw are EXACTLY where they tell you in the video. You must screw through 2 layers of metal and be in the area where the tail light will go back in place all of the way.
4) Do not unwrap the drive side wiring. Unwrap the other cables and drop them down the hole, reach in the whole, or remove the cover, and pull the wires underneath the vehicle.
5) Stick the unit to the same place the video shows.
6) Plug in the driver side taillight and screw it back to the vehicle.
7) Run the green wire to the passenger side. Use a pull wire or bungy cord down the hole and pull up the green wire. Connect it to the tail light and screw the light back on the vehicle.
8) The video shows large wire ties for the wiring, but there is only ONE, use it for the green wire and the 4 connector as the video shows.

There are two hitches that are a fit for your 2017 Kia Sorento though neither the Draw-Tite # 75908 or Curt # C13195 are rated for use with a weight distribution (load-leveling) system so you would be unable to use this to tow your 3,000 lb camper. I looked up your '17 Sorento's owner's manual and it does state that the maximum towing capacity for this vehicle is 3,500 lbs (for the Theta II 2.0/2.4 engine) or 5,000 lbs (for the Lambda II 3.3 engine) only if you have the trailer towing...

  • How to Tell if 2020 Kia Sorento Has Factory Tow Package
If your 2020 Kia Sorento has the factory tow package, there will be a tail light wiring connector behind the rear tire of the driver side, on the outside of the frame rail. As shown in the attached photos, an underbody cover will need to be removed to gain access to the factory tow ports. If you click on the installation video link provided for the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package # C56332, you can get a clear idea of how to remove the cover and locate the...

  • How to Determine if 2015 Kia Sorento EX Has Factory Tow Prep Package
The easiest way to determine if your 2015 Kia Sorento EX has the tow package would be to call your dealer's service department and have them run the VIN of your vehicle. They may even be able to send/email you a print out so you know exactly how your Sorento is equipped. When it comes to a hitch for your vehicle I recommend going with the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch, # C13152. This hitch will fit all models of the 2015 Sorento and installs with no welding or drilling required. If you...

  • Best Trailer Hitch for a 2020 Kia Sorento
The best trailer hitch for a 2020 Kia Sorento is the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver part # e98843 because unlike the other options for this vehicle it has a dull finish which we have found to not stand out nearly as much as the other glossier options. I know this may not seem like much but it really helps retains a factory like appearance as the shiny finishes tend to draw your eyes in which makes you see the trailer hitch first when looking at the rear of the vehicle. The etrailer Trailer...

  • Is Installation Hardware Included with Trailer Hitches for 2017 Kia Sorrento
Yes, both of the 2-inch Class III trailer hitches we offer for your 2017 Kia Sorento, the Curt # C13195 and the Draw-Tite # 75908, include all required installation hardware. I linked an installation video showing the Curt hitch installed on a 2016 model year; written instructions are linked too. Both install in the very same manner on your Sorento. If you need a 4-pole wiring harness you can use kit # C56256. This plugs in at your taillight assemblies and requires only one wire be connected...

  • Wiring 2016 Kia Sorento to use Curt Echo Trailer Brake Controller
The Curt Echo Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 will not actually require you use that kit for installation. What you would need to start with on your 2016 Kia Sorento instead is a 4-way connector (if you don't have one), either Wiring Harness # C56256 if your '16 Sorento does NOT have the factory tow package or Wiring Harness # C56332 if your Sorento DOES have the factory tow package. The install will be different depending on which harness you need and I have added links to videos showing...

  • Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector to a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe with 4-Way Flat Already Installed
Since there aren't any 7-Way trailer connectors that will plug into the 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe you will need to hardwire one in. Half the work is already done since you have a 4-Way installed already. All you will need is kit # ETBC7 to add a 7-Way and retain the 4-Way. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.

  • Powered Trailer Wiring Harness for 2014 Kia Sorento
All of the 4-pole trailer wiring harness kits we offer for the 2014 Kia Sorento, shown on the linked page, are the powered converter type. This means that a secondary 12V power connection for the harness is made directly to the vehicle battery, which provides the actual power to illuminate the trailer lights. This harness type does isolate the car's wiring from any potential faults or shorts on the trailer. The specific powered harness you need depends on how the car was equipped from...
