Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the trunk floor coverings, storage trays, rear scuff panel, and the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Curt T Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with a 4 pull flat trailer connector. This product fits certain years and models of the Subaru Impreza 5 Door Wagon. To ensure this is a fit for your vehicle, you can use the vehicle fit guide at eTrailer.com. It's going to provide a 4 way flat connector at the back of your vehicle, and it's going to power your trailer signal lights. It is compatible with 5 pull, 6 pull, and 7 pull adapters. Adapters are sold separately. And it comes with a dust cap for the 4 way flat connector. The black box on the unit is the included taillight converter.

This is going to ensure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer's. The power module connects directly to the vehicle battery through the wiring to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system. That's constructed using surface bond technology, which is going to offer consistent, reliable performance. What that does is that maximizes the trailer light yield and intensity while producing minimal heat, and it ensures superior operation even in rough road conditions. Now the kit is designed to install quickly and easily. All you need to do is locate the connection points behind the vehicle's taillights, and plug in your T connectors.

The connector with the green wire goes to the passenger side. The connector with the yellow wire goes to the driver's side. These are custom fit for your vehicle, so they're going to match up perfectly. Locate your connection points, plug these in, they're going to snap lock together for a nice tight, secure fit. Once you have that done, you'll need to make a ground connection. That's your white wire with the ring terminal attached to it.

You want to get that grounded at a suitable grounding surface or location with the included grounding screw. Then mount your converter box at a safe out-of-the-way location with the double sided adhesive foam tape. Once you have that done, you can run your hot lead to the vehicle battery. That's the short black wire coming out of the box. This gets connected, the one end of the bundle of black wiring with one of the included buck connectors. The other end of the bundle gets another buck connector attached to it, and connects to one half of the fuse holder.

The other half of the fuse holder gets a ring terminal attached to it and connects to the positive post of the vehicle battery. It does come with your 10 amp fuse, goes directly on there, and it's got the fuse cap that goes over to keep it safe and secured. I also want to point out that they do include a small tube of black silicone. This is a sealant and it also comes with detailed installation instructions that will walk you through the entire installation process step by step. Once you have the hot lead ran, you want to secure any excess or slack in your wiring with the included cable ties. Then once your install is complete, the connector is going to be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your trunk. Plenty of wiring there so you can pull it out when you need to use it, and tuck it away when you don't need to use it. It is recommended that you use a small amount of dielectric grease in all your electrical connections, like the plugs on the vehicle, and the 4 pull connector itself. That's going to help prevent corrosion. That grease is sold separately. It's available here at eTrailer.com. But it comes with a maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights, we're looking at 3 amps per circuit, and for the taillights we're looking at 6 amps per circuit. That's gonna do it for today's look at the Curt T Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with a 4 pull flat trailer connector.

2013 Subaru Impreza

I installed the wiring harness in a 2013 Subaru Impreza 5-door. The biggest challenge was running the power supply wire to the battery. Here's what I did.
I removed the rear seats (check online videos for details) and the threshold trim from the driver's side (both driver and passenger trim). I then ran the wire through the door jam up to the fuse box (lower left of steering wheel). I then used a fuse tap to extend an extra circuit from the unused 20 amp trailer circuit. The fuse tap allows you to install a separate fuse for the extension - I picked 10 amps (of course). The circuit is NOT switched - it's on even when the key is out. So I disconnected the tap while connecting the power wire to the wiring harness. Works like a charm and looks good (invisible).
It took a lot longer to figure out how I was going to hook the power wire up (lots of googling) than to actually do it. For other automobiles, I recommend checking for audio amp installation guides - they have similar issues.

2016 Subaru Impreza

First I would like to commend etrailer on their customer service. I received this wiring harness for my 2016 Subaru Impreza 5-Door Sport Limited. Installation wasn't too bad except that the plugs are WAY too big to fit through the existing grommets for the taillight assemblies. They say "make a small cut," but really you need to just cut a wide circle. If you cut too long of a slit, you risk cutting through the end. So just cut a wide circle. Look at my pictures for size of the grey plugs compared to the grommet.

I wired everything up, and headed out 750 miles to buy a trailer over a weekend. When I connected to the trailer the brake lights and turn signals worked, but the tail lights did not. I drove the 750 miles home anyway, just not at night. I did some trouble shooting with a voltmeter and saw that the brown wire in the connection didn't have any power. I emailed etrailer and they sent me a new one.

A few days later the new one arrived and, after having to uninstall the old and reinstall the new harness, it also didn't work. Instead of using the voltmeter I went and bought an inexpensive 12 volt light bulb tester. I was able to verify that my hot wire from the battery and the ground were working. The brown wire, which feeds the tail lights, was not. I checked the brown wire before the black box in the harness and it also wasn't getting power there. So I followed the brown wire back to the driver's side plugs on the harness.

The vehicle plug has six spots, but only 5 have wires coming in. You can see it in the pictures. The Curt harness has six wires. The brown wire was connected to the spot where there was no vehicle wire. That's why it wasn't getting any power. I called Curt Customer service and they had no explanation. They verified my VIN and that this harness should work for my vehicle; they have had no other calls regarding this harness, but they also don't know how many other people have tried my specific year. They think there is a possibility this will only effect some individual cars or perhaps my entire model year. But apparently my car has a different rear light assembly than they think it is supposed to have.

I was able to cut and splice the appropriate wires with solder and heat shrink. I now have a working harness, but I should not have had to go through these lengths for a harness that was supposedly built for my vehicle. If you want a harness for your Impreza I would recommend you give one of the other brands a try and not this Curt model.

Good Product. I am a guy that likes a challenge although this wasen't much of one.. easy instructions, straight forward application and tools this was a fun project. my best advice would be if you're putting together a project of sorts make sure you speak to a rep before you order, that way all the parts you order work well together..

Unfortunately, I don't have any video footage at this time to provide you but I have a better set of instructions with more photos that might be more helpful. Curt offers the # C56368 wiring harness that installs in the same manner as the Tekonsha # 118573, so their more helpful and clear instructions should make things a little more clear for you. • Best Hitch for 2016 Subaru Impreza 5-Door Wagon
I do have a solution for you and can provide you the information you need, however, the hitch you currently have will not fit as needed. The EcoHitch # 306-X7241 that you have does not fit on the 2016 Subaru Impreza 5-Door Wagon model. The reason the sedan model will not work on your wagon will be related to the factory mounting holes in the frame, muffler placement, and other body parts. The hitch I am selecting for you today has already been test fitted to your vehicle. Because you...

  • Trailer Hitch for a 2015 Subaru Impreza 5-Door Hatchback
Curt lists trailer hitch # C11286 as a fit for the 2015 Subaru Impreza hatchback but it excludes WRX and WRX STi models. If you plan on doing some towing use ball mount # C45521. For a ball use # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch or # 19258 for a 2 inch. Then for the pin and clip use # F-4. For trailer wiring use # C56368 that plugs in behind both tail lights.
