Video Transcript for Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness Installation - 2020 Honda Passport

Hello everyone. Clay 00:00:01 here @etrailer.com. Today we'll be working on a 2020 Honda passport. We'll be taking a look at and I'll show you how to install the Curt T-connector 7-way wiring harness. Our 7-way is going to give us all the proper lighting functions to travel safely down the roadway. And most vehicles have a 4-pole, but having a 7-way is going to allow us to hook up to a lot more trailers.

We have a few extra functions. We have our breaks. We have our reverse lights and we have our charge line, whereas in just a regular 4-pole we have a ground, left turn, right turn and running lights. This is what our 7-way is going to look like installed. As you can see, it has a nice sprung door, has a nice weather stripping on the inside just to keep our connector protected from all of the outside elements.

One really nice feature about this kit is it's all plug and play. So you don't have to splice into any of our factory wiring or anything like that. It's going to be super easy to get installed. In fact, the hardest part about this is just taking everything out of our trunk. While we're talking about installation, I'll go and show you how to get it installed on your passport now.To start our installation, we want to lift up on our cargo cover.

We'll go ahead and take this out. We now want to remove this cargo bin here. I'm going to twist these tabs on each side to release our plastic, and we'll just lift this out of place and set it off to the side. We now want to remove our spare tire. We'll unthread our nut here in the middle that holds our spare tire down.

Now we can pull our spare tire up. We now want to pull out our spare tire kit. This styrofoam simply just pulls out of here. You do want to pick it up by the Jack so we don't break our styrofoam. We now want to take off the trim for our rear hatch. All we want to do is simply lift up on this and pop these snaps out place. We'll set this off to the side inaudible 00:01:57 re installation later. We're now ready to lift our carpet out of place. There are going to be two plastic push pins, one located on each side right here in the back corner. We're going to take our trim panel tool, slide it behind here and just pull out. We now just grab this and slide it out of place. We'll set this off to the side. We're now ready to remove this plastic cover over our hook, we slide our screwdriver behind that crack there, and then pull out. That's going to reveal a inaudible 00:02:26 meter screw. We can go ahead and take that out. We now want to lift up our cargo latch. Now we take that small flat blade screwdriver and just pry behind here, carefully lifting up, revealing a Phillips head screw down there. We can set our cargo latch off to the side.We now want to grab a nylon pry tool. It's going to reach in behind this gasket, kind of pry out at our panel. Should work our way down releasing the tabs. You see that white connector there That's the one we're going to be using. Now we'll grab a trim panel tool and pry up on this black plastic piece located here in the middle. It's not going to take much because you do want to pry very carefully so you don't want to break our plastic. With all of our tabs removed, we can pull out on this to reveal our grommet right here. That grommet we just got access to on the top is going to be located right here on the bottom. We're simply going to pull out on it. You grab our new harness. We're going to have to maneuver our factory wiring around to get our new plug to fit through here. That's most of our wiring pulled through. We can move back up top and I just want to pull everything back up through our grommet. Now we're going to take our new harness throughout it up behind our panel here and we'll pull back our pannel like so. Make our connection with this plug to the factory plug behind our panel. You hear a nice click, give it a little tug and make sure it's not going anywhere. And we just want to add our 10 amp fuse to our fuse holder here. We're now ready to add our two-sided tape to our module. We'll peel back one side, stick it on there. Make sure to press it on pretty good. We can now take our backing off. I'm going to pull up on our carpet right here. Just slide this underneath and then we're going to stick it down to the body. Now it's going to be hard to see, but it is going to be right there. Make sure to push down on it for a while. Just keep it in one spot. Now I want to reach down and pull our grommet up from underneath. Then we grab our snips and cut our grommet. Our goal here is to slide our new wiring harness through this cut that we're about to make in our grommet. We can pull the last part of our grommet apart like that. Slide our wiring through and push our grommet back down into the hole on our floor board. We now want to determine a good mounting spot for our inaudible 00:05:27. I'm going to mount ours right here. It's a good solid location. We'll be able to tuck our wiring up and hide it. We have our self-tapper provided and rundown inaudible 00:05:41. Now I'm going to shake around and make sure it's not going anywhere. We can zip tie our wiring up out of the way.We are now done working in the trunk of our vehicle so we can reinstall our trunk components in the reverse order that we took them apart. We now want to come back and secure our wiring with zip ties up here around our factory wiring. You don't want to get this as tight as possible so it stays away from the sway bar. We're now going to come up to our engine compartment and add a few fuses. Our fuse panel is going to be located right here. There's going to be three tabs. We're simply going to push in on each tab and then lift up on the cover. That'll reveal our fuse panel. Our kit is going to provide us with four fuses, the 10 amp fuse and the standard size is going in that fuse holder and the wiring harness. Then they provide us with a 30 amp fuse and then two micro 20 amp fuses. We're going to add our 30 amp fuse right here. Complete just set it on top, then push straight down. Then our 20 amp fuses are going to go here next to the 30 amp and here next to the 10 amp. Check and make sure all of our fuses are pushed down. We now want to grab 7-seven way mounting bracket. If you don't have one of these, you can find them here @etrailer.com. We can come back and inaudible 00:07:06 at our mounting hardware. We just want to grab our wiring like this, plug it into our 7-way, give it a nice tug and make sure it's tight. And we can mount our plug into our bracket. You now come back and tighten everything down. With everything hooked up to our tester, we can go ahead and test out all of our lighting functions. To start, we'll start with our brake lights, our running lights, our right turn, and our left turn. That's going to complete our look at and the installation of the Curt T connector 7-way wiring harness on our 2020 Honda passport.

I received the wiring harness in just a couple of days. When I went to install it I discovered that there was one already in the vehicle. The dealer had told me there wasn't one. etrailer followed right up with me to do a return. Great service! I've used them in the past for other camper related items.

Thumbs up!

2017 Honda Pilot

Second wiring harness in about a year the computer module between plug in for car and trailor plug stoped working. No brake lights. Be aware this is a problem with all of these wiring harnesses be sure to check brake lights often. Blinkers will work fine but no brake lights.

Comments
Please be aware of the 1 year warranty on these wiring harnesses.

The wiring harness is excellent. Installation was not too complicated for a do it yourself install. Instructions/pictures were clear and understandable. We are very happy with the result and performance of the trailer wiring harness ordered from etrailer. This wiring harness along with a new Hitch receiver was mounted on a 2021 Honda Pilot.
Overall great product and service. We would buy again.

by:

Plugging it in and adding the fuses was the easiest part. Trying to snake it through my vehicle was the real challenge. But it all worked out in the end.

by:

Superior quality materials and workmanship on the actual hitch, BUT I am surprised a 7-pin trailer connector will not fit the flange on this hitch!!!

by:
2020 Honda Passport

So glad that these custom harnesses are available. It made the job of wiring in the trailer connector so much easier on my 2020 Honda Passport. Great detailed instructions with color pictures. It's hard to go wrong!!

Everything that was provided by etrailer was excellent. The only thing that needs improvement is the installation instructions. [video] filled in the bad spots so the installation went well. Alex was great to work with.

Honda Pilot

A bit harder to install than the hitch, but manageable. Went on a Honda Pilot.

by:

Excellent arrived early and safe packag ing

by:
2021 Honda Passport

Per instructions the grommet it is supposed to pass through is NOT big enough. I had to cut the wires and splice them after feeding it into the cargo area. For the price I paid for this kit there should be no modifications required.

Comments
The USCAR connector will fit through the oval grommet if turned sideways according to the installation instructions.

2016 Honda Pilot

Everything worked well as the instructions laid it out. A very tight fit to get the 7 blade receptacle socket through the floor pan hole in my 2016 Pilot, but eventually got it worked through.

by:

Plugged into the wire harness exactly like it was supposed to.

by:

Worked great and easy install on 2021 Honda Pilot Touring

by:
2018 Honda Pilot

Very easy process to order. Delivered within a reasonable time. Overall happy dealing with etrailer.com

2021 Honda Passport

We were missing the 2 20amp fuses, but we had some on hand so not a big deal. The walk through videos are incredible and easy to follow along!

by:

Fits as if it were from the factory. Very easy to install. As always great service from etrailer.

by:
2016 Honda Pilot

nice easy install

by:

Worked as described.

by:

Everything worked fine but the connector to the trailer hitch needed new holes drilled.

by:
2019 Honda Passport

Easy to install, no problems i like it.

by:

Flawless fit and install.

by:

This was easy to install, but a few pages of the directions were missing. That was not a big deal as the website had the complete PDF file. The Curt brand has a tradeoff between the T-one. The T-one requires you to assemble the plug, but came with a grommet installed. The Curt had the plug installed, but you had to cut the existing grommet and re-seal.

by:

Product was great and installation was a breeze. Handling and shipping was a little slow

  • Do Both Connectors On the Curt T-Connector for a 2019 Honda Passport Need Plugged In
In regards to the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # CU86FR, there are two white connectors. The larger rectangular connector contains the trailer lighting circuits and the smaller square connector contains the reverse sensor wire. If you don't have reverse sensors then you won't have to plug this into anything. I think that is what you are asking but if not take a look at the installation instructions which are attached below.

  • Installation of Honda Pilot Wiring Harness Does
Installation of the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector, # CU86FR feeds through the bottom of the vehicles cargo area by removing the rubber grommet. See the attached image. I have linked an installation video of this item on a 2021 Honda Passport. It will install similarly on the Pilot. If unable to feed this through for whatever reason, then yes the cutting and splicing the wires is an option. But I suggest that you first remove the grommet completely...

  • Troubleshooting Curt 56421 7-Way Trailer Wiring Harness on 2019 Honda Passport
According to my contact in the Tech Support department at Curt, a diode in the Curt 56421 harness which we sell as # CU86FR has shorted out which allows voltage to feed back into the trailer with the vehicle off. This is typically caused by a short circuit somewhere in the trailer wiring or by a dirty or corroded 7-way connector on the trailer. If the connector is showing green or white corrosion on the sockets, there's a good chance the corrosion has spread inside the connector which can...

  • Does Curt 7-Way Require Mounting Bracket For 2021 Honda Passport With OEM Trailer Hitch
From what I saw of the OEM trailer hitch for your 2021 Honda Passport, it does already have the mounting area like you said, and will in fact line up with the Curt harness, so you will not need a mounting bracket. The correct Curt 7-way for your 2021 Passport is the following: - Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector # CU86FR

  • Troubleshooting the Curt 7-Way Harness for 2016 Honda Pilot with No Brake Lights
It definitely doesn't sound right to have your brake light wire bypass your module. The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector # CU86FR has multiple fuses that all need to be in the correct locations and functional and then you also need to make sure the ground wire connection is good. Often when a one function doesn't work, the fuse or a weak ground connection is the issue. I recommend making sure the ground connection is bare metal to metal (even free...

  • Does Curt 7-Way Harness part # CU86FR Come with Converter Box
The Curt trailer wiring harness part # CU86FR that you referenced does come with a converter. It is mentioned in the description and pictured in product pictures as well. So the easiest to install brake controller that also works really well is the Curt Echo Mobile part # C51180. Basically this just plugs into an active 7-way and once you sync it to your phone it's ready to go. This brake controller is proportional which means it senses the amount of deceleration your tow vehicle is applying...

Your owner's manual should show the exact location of the fuse box you need to get access to, but it will be the smaller one in the engine compartment of your 2020 Honda Pilot. The ports you will need to check are in the 2, 3 and 11 positions. These will cover the Trailer Main, Trailer Brake, and Trailer Charge respectively. Also, this converter is better quality than the competitor Curt # CU86FR. For the brake controller itself, I recommend the Curt Echo # C51180. The difference between the 7-way harnesses available for your 2018 Honda Pilot comes down to quality and reliability. Over the years we have found the Tekonsha brand to be far more reliable than Curt so I strongly recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 7-Way Trailer # 118286. A taillight converter combines 3 circuits, left turn signal, right turn signal and brake lamps into two circuits. This is necessary because the trailer uses a 2 wire system instead of the 3 wire system used on the tow vehicle. I'd recommend the Tekonsha # 118291. The Curt wiring harness # CU86FR is the 7-way wiring harness that connects to the same location.
