  • Maximum amperage:
    • Stop/turn lights: 3 amps per circuit
    • Tail lights: 6 amps per circuit
  • Limited 1-year warranty

Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the interior trim panel in your rear cargo area. Once you've plugged in the converter, insert the included 10-amp fuse into the integrated fuse holder.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area. Adhere the black converter box to the frame of the car using the double-sided tape provided. Secure any loose parts of the T-connector with the provided cable ties.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plug on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

2020 Subaru Outback Wagon

Easy installation. For the 2020 Outback, instructions were wrong about location of connection. Subaru moved the harness connection to the passenger's side, against the rear of the space for the spare tire. See Image.

2018 Subaru XV Crosstrek

This was super simple on my 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Limited. Popped a few panels off the back truck area and the hook up was right there. Plugged in the wiring harness, drilled in the ground, taped down the "box" part and then tested it with the trailer. Worked perfectly. Put the panels back and I was ready to tow. 15 minutes tops to finish.

Comments
I can say that I have used the wiring harness like, 10 times in the last year. Flawless and no problems with functionality. I live in Houston, TX, so high heat and freezing temps have not effected the wiring. It is kept inside the car in the spare tire well.

2021 Subaru Forester

The placement of the connector in the back of the Subaru Forester allowed me to plug in the wiring harness and let the excess cable, box, and fuse sit in the back tray of the forester. I grounded the harness to a nearby bolt and bracket. I feed the wire out of the back of the hatch when needed.

Installation instructions- especially the videos- were straightforward and easy to follow. Installation was simple.

I give this 3 stars because of the excellent etrailer customer service and great installation information and videos. However after 8 months of minimal use, my running lights would not work. After troubleshooting, it appeared that I had 12v into the module (running lights wire). But was not exiting the module. I had to jump this wire to bypass the module. This should be a pass through wire. Why it stopped working is beyond me. It doesn’t instill a lot of confidence especially on long trips

Comments
Always check for warranties. This has a 1 year warranty so you could have called etrailer at the 8 month mark and gotten it replaced.

Easy to install, even the videos that came with it was super to follow and when I was installing my tow hitch I figure it out where I can run the cable instead of just having it run from the trunk, I’m just worried that it’s gonna brake from time but I figure to wired it elsewhere

Comments
Thank you for your feedback. I wanted to assure you that the weather stripping will protect the harness wires. The wiring is free to move in and out with little resistance that will work long term for you.

2012 Subaru Forester

Harness was easy to install but does take a bit longer than stated. I’m pretty good with DIY electrical and mechanical. It took me about an hour to figure the route and placement of the power conditioner so everything would go back nice and secure. See pics. This is for 2012 Subaru Forester.

Perfect! I was able to pull back the cover to reveal the connector once the hook is removed. As in the video, blue tape holds it.

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

5 stars for the wiring harness which works just fine in my 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon. The install took some time though (more than it took to install a Curt hitch) because it was hard to locate and expose the car's wiring connector. Would give the install a 3 star for that. The harness instructions have pictures showing where to find that connector behind a panel covering the left rear wheel well. But you don't know exactly where behind that panel, and it's a tight squeeze getting your hand & forearm in there to find it. A small mirror helped. The harness is looped back on itself so you won't see the connector, look for the loop and maybe some blue tape which holds the loop. It's finding that loop that took the time. I routed the harness out through a rubber plug in the spare tire well. It's easy & much neater than running it under the tailgate when you're towing. Remove the rubber plug, slice it from the center to one edge so you can get the wiring harness into it. Figure out how long a wire you need outside the car, reinstall the plug, and seal around the wire with 100% silicone caulk. I connected the grounding wire to an existing bolt inside the car (just secure with a second nut) rather than drilling a new screw hole.

2022 Subaru Outback Wagon

This is really a nice compliment to the wiring on the 2022 Outback Touring XL. On this vehicle the factory towing terminal is taped to the harness that runs across underneath the threshold at the lift gate. The threshold is held in place by push/pull pins, so increasingly applied upward pressure on either end will begin to pop it up and out. Drill one hole for the ground screw, and you'ready. (I chose to use thread locker on the screw as an extra measure). Curt has supplied a nice long lead from the vehicle to the trailer, or rack.

2017 Subaru Forester

The Curt Receiver Hitch custom fit for our 2017 Subaru Forester is exactly what I? was hoping for. We wanted a receiver to continue to use the bike rack from a prior vehicle. Our prior hitch bar hung below the vehicle reducing ground clearance and often scraped the ground at inclined entries to parking areas or driveways. This custom fit hitch bar is completely inside the bumper, and has no impact on clearance. Perfect!

Comments
After a year, we used the hitch more than anticipated. Weve towed a few rental trailers to move things to colleges, and just bought a cargo rack that accommodates a few large bins to add more cargo volume. Fantastic!

The Curt connector fit perfectly. The 2021 Outback factory trailer connector the Curt harness connects to is located in the spare tire compartment at the back top toward the passenger side. Only the spare tire compartment needs to be accessed. No other panels need to be removed!!!!

2017 Subaru Forester

Hitch was delivered fairly quickly but as others had experienced I had damaged packaging and needed to spray a little Rustoleum on it in a few places. I was able to follow the instructions that came with the product and did not have to enlarge any hole in the frame to fish the spacers and bolts as in the video. The video was very helpful though and I recommend watching it. I did remove the muffler and that made it much easier. I had the help of a friend with better tools than mine and it took us about an hour. This was installed on my 2017 Forester Premium. Would have given five stars if not for having to touch it up. I also installed the Curt C56040 wiring harness on my own and it went smoothly and exactly as in the video.

2015 Subaru Outback Wagon

The wiring harness was easy to install on my 2015 Subaru Outback once I had accessed the built-in connector. I utilized the video resources on the etrailer website to determine where the built-in connector was located and how to access it. This was the hardest part of the installation. The rest of the installation was very straight forward and was accomplished within 5 minutes.

The receiver hitch is perfect. The wiring harness instructions are completely wrong as far as where the vehicle harness location is. Luckily your video was available after which the installation was a breeze.

Subaru Outback Wagon

The instructions here were "ok", not great. I took out all the floor in the trunk of my Subaru Outback (2012) and turns out half of it could have stayed in. The wire harness on the car is hard to find, Subaru thing, I suppose they figure most people aren't going to hook up trailers. Overall, took about 30 minutes to complete this part of the job. About 90 to do the hitch. First timer here. Still pretty simple. The instructions also do not tell you where to run the end that goes to the trailer. I found a round black rubber plug that goes out the bottom under the spare tire. Run the wire there to the hitch and stuff the plug back in there and tape it down. And done! :)

2021 Subaru Outback Wagon

E-trailer and Curt have done it again with this cheap and easy option. This is the third time I've used their products, and it was the easiest. When I first install the wiring harness it did not activate my trailer lights, which was odd, because the trailer lights worked when hooked up to my other vehicle. After a little troubleshooting I found that the trailer ground was barely connected, so I cleaned all the rust off and put a new end on the wire. Boom, everything worked!!!

2017 Subaru XV Crosstrek

Installing this powered trailer lighting adapter was pretty easy, the most difficult part being removal of the trim panels. If you haven't done this sort of thing before you'll find that an inexpensive set of trim removal tools will be a significant help. Subaru did the wiring job properly - contrary to what I expected you don't have to run a hot wire to the battery, a hot is already present at the connector - and the actual hookup is pretty easy. The assembler who secured the connector pigtail at the factory was perhaps overly enthusiastic with the electrical tape so a sharp knife and some careful dissection was required to avoid damaging any wires. While the instructions suggest drilling a hole and using the included self-tapping screw for the ground wire, on my 2017 Crosstrek that wasn't necessary as Subaru has thoughtfully provided a tapped hole for an M6 screw in the perfect location. I used an M6-100 hex head bolt with both a flat washer and a lock washer.

Installation was straightforward and uncomplicated. Be patient when looking for the trailer wiring plug. It's buried somewhere behind the driver's side passenger seat in the sidewall. Just be patient so you don't rip the covering. The hitch installs easily and I found modification of the exhaust heat shield to be a very simple process with tin snips and a razor knife (reminder: the heat shield is very thin metal)

  • Location of OEM Wiring Connector on 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon
Thank you for your purchase of Curt 4-Pole Wiring Harness kit # C56040 which is a confirmed fit on your 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon (excluding the Sport Edition). We had the chance to install this harness for a local customer and the linked video shows the installation process. Our technician located the white plastic OEM connector behind the carpet in the front/left corner of the cargo area as shown in the video at the 3:40 mark. Please check your owner's manual starting on page 6-15...

  • Will Curt T-Connector Wiring Harness C56040 Provide Power Supply To Trailer
The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56040 will provide brake, tail, and left and right turn lights to a trailer with a 4-way flat connector. This wiring harness will not provide your trailer with a power supply. The harness requires a power supply because of the taillight converter built into the harness. The converter works to match the Subaru Forester's separate lighting with the trailer connector's combined lighting. I have attached an installation video of this wiring...

  • Can Trailer Wiring be Routed Outside of 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Instead of Hanging Out the Hatch

You will need to remove all the flooring that you can in the cargo area of the vehicle to get down to the metal. Then look for a grommet that you could route the wiring through. If there is no grommet you would have to drill. The weather stripping on the vehicle hatch will protect the harness wires provided the hatch is not closed on the harness. The...

  • Location Of The Connecting Harness For Curt T-Connector With 4-Pole On 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon
The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # C56040, plugs in with a simple connection in the rear of your 2017 Subaru Outback. Unfortunately, according to my tech contact at Curt, Subaru has not been consistant with where this plug is located. He said they have found them anywhere behind the rear seat to under the carpet near the spare tire, to even taped to the wires behind the tail light. The harness is consistent, but the location isn't other...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Location On 2014 Subaru Forester
I looked at the installation instructions for your 2014 Subaru Forester and found that the wiring harness is located behind the rear panel on the driver side. The location is very similar to the Crosstrek in the attached video. The video explains how to remove the cargo tray and the panel to access the harness. I have also attached a couple of photos that show the location of the harness per the installation instructions.
