2021 Subaru Outback Wagon - Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Connector

  • Trailer Hitch Wiring
  • 4 Flat
  • Powered Converter
  • Hopkins

Quickly and easily install a 4-way trailer connector on your Subaru Outback Wagon with this custom harness. T-connector plugs directly into existing wiring - no cutting or splicing required.

Features:

  • Provides a 4-way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights
    • Compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole and 7-pole adapters (sold separately)
  • Connects quickly and easily
    • Locate connection point in rear cargo area
    • Plug in connector - no cutting or splicing
  • Includes a tail light converter to ensure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer
    • Powered module connects directly to battery to avoid overloading vehicle's electrical system
  • Protective connection terminals resist corrosion
  • Comes with dust cap for 4-way flat connector, cable ties, and terminal grease packet for electrical connections

Specs:

  • Maximum amperage:
    • Stop/turn lights: 3 amps per circuit
    • Tail lights: 6 amps per circuit
  • 90-Day limited warranty

Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area on the driver's side. You will have to remove the cargo area cover and interior trays to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, insert the provided fuse into the in-line fuse holder.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Subaru XV Crosstrek

The installation for my subaru crosstrek was easy. The etrailer hitch came with everything I needed except the drill bit to enlarge the bolt holes on the frame. I got a kick out of using the fishing wires to snake the spacers and bolts thru the frame. All said it was a perfect fit. Also really appreciated the installation video.

Subaru XV Crosstrek

It took me 5 minutes to install and absolutely love it! Works great, super easy to install on my 2020 Subaru Crosstrek. 10/10 would recommend

2020 SubaruOutback Wagon

I didn't get this installed until well after the warranty lapsed. It didn't work. All lights were on all the time-even when the car was off. I chatted online with etrailer to see if I had made a mistake or was missing something. Their response: "The warranty has expired". I emailed Hopkins-no reply. Finally I bought a Curt off [online store] for 1/3 the price. It works great. Not much point in spending more at etrailer if their customer service is non existent.

Product works as expected. On the Subarus, it’s a little tough to find the plugin on the car, but it’s there. For my car, it was taped to the side of the panel and I had to dig around for it, but found it! Very easy to install, it’s plug and play.

by:

Thanks to etrailer's incredibly helpful video and excellent products, my Subaru is styling with a new hitch and electrical. I'm not much of a do-it-yourself kinda guy when it comes to vehicles and this was actually a pretty fun project with no drilling, cutting or other invasive procedures that I probably would not have enjoyed. Buy the right one and just go for it!

SubaruOutback Wagon

Easy plug-and-play wiring for my gen 5 Outback. Check Youtube for the etrailer video on installing this. It was helpful for me. There was also a video from Uhaul which clearly showed exactly where you can find your wiring pigtail inside the car. It's on the driver's side, behind the D-ring just behind the back seat. If you remove the D-ring, you can reach in there and touch the plug.

by:

Fast shipping! Great product and helpful install videos.

easy install

by:

Simple install good instructions. Works great but put some thin chafing protection on the wires if your tailgate closes on them.

by:
SubaruOutback Wagon

Was a bit hard to install since the instructions has not changed from the previous Gen Outback. The vehicle harness was moved from the drivers side rear fender to just inside the rear hatch. It was found after a Google search. After installation it has worked without problem.

I’m no stranger to etrailer, a few years back I found you folks and ordered a hitch for my 2009 Hyundai SantaFe the installation was extremely easy. Your installation tutorials from Ryan are spot on. The trailer light assembly installation went just as easy. So it was without hesitation I ordered a trailer hitch and light assembly for my new 2022 Subaru Ascent. Once again a super clear, well explained installation tutorial. You folks are the BEST when it comes to after market trailer hitches.
Also, for some reason the new flat plug light assembly did not have a debris cover. You folks sent me out 2 covers lickity split. Thank you etrailer for being the best, friendliest, professional, aftermarket trailer product company out there!!!!

by:
2016 SubaruOutback Wagon

This installation could not be any easier, took me less than half an hour, the video was right on and it went together perfectly. I like the fact that the plug remains in trunk when not in use and is not exposed to the weather. I would strongly recommend this product.

by:

No issues with etrailer.com all staff and operators were helpful. The product worked for a little bit but kept shorting out the built in fuse, which kept my car safe, so the fuse on the part worked. I sent the part back for a refund but I have not ordered a new part yet. Good part overall I just got a bad apple.

Typically, its a short circuit somewhere in the trailer wiring that causes this to happen. Before installing a new taillight converterharness, Id recommend closely examining the wiring on the trailer. Begin at the trailer connector and trace each circuit back to the taillights. Look for pinched wires or loose connections. Check for wire insulation thats cracked or worn through, anything that would allow the copper wire to short out to the trailer frame. If you dont locate and repair the short, youll continue to short out taillight converters.

This wiring kit lasted only part of a season. I don’t blame etrailer, they only sell the part. Just go to [retailer] and buy their kit. It’s cheaper and better built.

Thank you so much for your feedback on the harness. I am sorry to hear that it did not last for you. The harness does have a limited one year warranty. For your 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon I recommend part # C56040 which has the highest amp capacity of the harness that fit.

by:

Was high quality and the install was very easy after watching the video on installation.

by:

The instructions were not accurate for a Crosstrek, they might be right for an Outback. When I called Hopkins for support, they werent very helpful. They ended up telling me to call a dealer. I reached out to etrailer support and Joshua was fantastic. He asked me to send him pictures and he found other instructions that helped me complete the install. This harness also wont fit through any body holes, so they basically have you running it out the hatch and closing the hatch on the cable. Not ideal and not hidden, but I guess it works.

I would agree that the Hopkins instructions are vague for the 2016 Subaru CrossTrek. Each of the trailer wiring harnesses that fit your 2016 Subaru Crosstrek will be stored inside the rear hatch compartment. It can be completely out of the way though, as you can lift up the panel in the rear hatch where the connector is and simply store the connector there. Harnesses are specifically designed this way for many vehicles that are not considered full-time towing vehicles as a way to help protect it from damage. If you want to have the harness stored outside your Subaru you will need to drill a hole to route the harness underneath. The best method would be to pull up the carpet in the rear of the vehicle, looking for an existing hole or knockout. If there is a knockout, remove the center piece and run the wire through. If you cannot find an existing hole, you will have to drill one. Any time you run electrical wiring through the car body, you will want to use a grommet to prevent the wire from rubbing against the opening and eventually shorting out. You will also want to use silicone sealant to seal up the hole around the wire to prevent exhaust from entering the passenger compartment.

2015 SubaruOutback Wagon

The Hopkins wiring harness is great, came on time and packaging was good. This went on my 2015 outback easily and works good. The only thing I did different from the instruction was after plugging into the cars wiring I ran the rest of the wire into the spare tire area and cut a slot in the rubber plug in the bottom and continued the connector along under the car to the trailer hitch then mounted the plug to the hitch with a bracket I made out of small angle iron bolted to the hitch. Then sealed the rubber plug around the wire with rubber cement and made sure all the slack in the wire underneath was gone so as not to catch on anything while driving. I did it this way because I didn't want to run the wire out the rear hatch door when connecting it to the trailer And it looks and works good.

2022 Subaru Ascent

Easy install “plug and play”. The wiring past the junction box is a bit short but it works and makes it far enough to the hitch opening for the 2022 Subaru Ascent

by:

The unit worked correctly, and was not to difficult to install. The only issue we had was the connector was in a different spot that indicated. But was easy to find it once we realized the issue.

Shipped quicly, and works. So we are happy

by:

Rather than trying to snake your hand up blindly to locate the plug (seen beginning at 2:37 of the 2017 installation video), I STRONGLY recommend removing the the cargo tie-down.

Fold the rear seat down on the driver's side, and gently flip up the carpeted cover (held down with 3 push-pins). With a flat-bladed screwdriver, gently pry the plastic inner piece of the tie-down downward to expose the 10mm bolt. After removing it, and the entire tie-down assembly, you will be able to easily see the plug through the opening. This makes it much simpler to reach in from underneath to pull down the plug.

The rest of the installation can proceed as normal.

by:

Installed hitch and separate wiring harness in about 3 hours. Videos were very helpful for both, especially for wiring. I wouldn’t have been able to find the wire connection otherwise. Like some of the other reviewers i managed to keep the middle tab in the bumper and cut around it. Like the hitch so far. Thanks etrailer.

Subaru Forester

It took awhile to find out where to plug it in to, the Forester has a different place than the Outback. I did some online research and found a youtube instruction that got me there for where it is in the Outback.

I use the trailer often. The device works well every time.

by:

Wiring in the 2022 is in different location than previous models. Etrailer needs to update their videos. The plug is under the rear panel by the liftgate latch. Literally takes popping off cover and plugging it in.

  • Where is My Connector Plug on My 2022 Subaru Outback Wagon?
As far as the harness, based on your recent searches, I believe you are referring to the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Connector # HM11143885 for your 2022 Subaru Outback. Most likely what happened is the harness of the sensors got disturbed when you installed this kit. I'd recommend going over the install and seeing if you can find where the sensor might have gotten unplugged or damaged.

  • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon
Sounds like a short damaged the converter box of the harness you have. This happens typically when there was a pretty bad short on the trailer wiring. The boxes are designed to short themselves out when they sense a bad enough short to prevent the short from transferring to the vehicle's wiring. So what you'll want to do is find out where the short is on your trailer and fix that so that when you replace the wiring you don't also damage the new kit. The Tekonsha kit part # 118467 is the...
