Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area, either behind the driver's-side trim panel or in the spare tire compartment. You will need to remove some interior paneling to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, insert the provided fuse into the in-line fuse holder.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plug on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

This trailer wiring harness is just what I needed, but even with the help of your instructional video I struggled to find the factory pre-installed writing to attach it to under the wheelwell trim. The trick, found in a Subaru owners’ forum, is to first remove the cargo tie-down on the wheelwell just behind the left rear seat. After doing that, you can extract the bundled wire from that hole, cut the two pieces of plastic tape that secure it, uncoil that wire and then feed it back into the hole and follow the instructions to finish up. I’m uploading pictures to show that simple process.

I received the Draw-Tite Max-Frame trailer hitch receiver class lll 2" custom fit for our Subaru 2019 Outback on the 12th of March, 5 days after ordering it, almost to the minute. It is in pristeen condition. It will be some time before I can get it installed because of the covid19 but I will review it in detail when I can. So far this has been an excellent company to work with.

Comments
The wiring was easy to install except for the one spot in the Outback that is a little difficult to get the wires through. Other than that the wires are just the right length and well made.

Installed on 2018 Subaru Outback. Very simple plug and play connector. Bought the affordable tester and made sure it worked...it did! The video was very helpful, but I’ll add one helpful tip. The video shows you having to reach up from the bottom of the upholstery to reach the connector and cut the blue tape holding it in place. Don’t waste that time and pain (the space is small); cut the bottom blue tape near the loop by accessing it as the video shows, but unbolt the net loop (see photos) with a 10mm socket to access the top blue tape from that hole. Once the top tape is cut you can easily pull down the wire from the bottom.

Always great service, communication. Website very informative as to installation. I would include pictures and/or video but the wiring harness bought for my vehicle was as easy as plugging in a toaster. My Subaru Forester comes equipped with factory installed trailer wiring located by the spare tire so all you need to do is plug and go.

Well i did get the hitch for my 2020 subaru outback. I installed it in around 90mins pretty easy, e- trailer made it very easy. Now i ordered the wiring harness, & it looks very easy to install. E- trailer provides a step by step video how to do it. Thanks everyone at E- trailer great service.

Bought a trailer hitch for my Subi so I can pull my trailer. It was pretty easy to install. The electrical connection wires for the lights were really easy to install. Everything just plugged in (i'm used to cutting wires, soldering, etc.) It was so easy to install. But, i am a mechanic so you will need basic tools and some basic intelligence to install it. Or, just get someone else to do it! :)

The trailer light wireing harness was recommended by e-trailer when I purchased a new trailer hitch and I'm glad the did because I totally forgot about it. It was so easy to install it plugged right into my cars wiring effortlessly and it came with zip ties to secure the wires under the car I just wish everything could be this easy. I will definitely recommend e-trailer to everyone and I'll be back again.

EZ 3-beer driveway installation even with some MacGyver tools (I had to use a cutoff piece of EMT conduit as a pry bar). I didn’t need ramps too, but a buddy to lift the mount into place is a good call. The shipping box made for a great work pad.

2021 Subaru Forester

Very easy to use and works like a charm. When I first wired the trailer all the lights worked perfectly. While working on the trailer a few days later I inadvertently cut the wires at one light. When I plugged the trailer to my car later that evening none of the lights worked. Once the cut wires were repaired everything work as it should again. The ground fault interrupter kept me from potentially damaging my car's wiring. Excellent product.

The wiring harness is just as advertised. What is lacking in the descriptions and videos is ANY detail of just where the wiring adapter pigtail is located, how to find it and how to accommodate it in your vehicle. So, without further ado... The wiring pigtail in my 2018 Subaru Outback is UP and Under the trim panel on the drivers side just behind the back seat. You need to remove ALL of the flooring pieces on the drivers side, and then remove the cargo hook in the left side wall so you can pull the finish panel away from the body a little bit better. Breaking the TAPE with which the pigtail is attached to the main harness in this blind cavity is a chore but manageable once you find it and get a hold of the right part. Pull out the connector, plug in your wiring harness, then push the plugs back up under the side panel. I left mine in such a way that the 10A fuse holder remained in the rear compartment so as to facilitate fuse changes if needed. I placed the (nicely potted) control module in the forward part of the spare tire well and attached it with double sided tape. (The instructions say to use the tape, yet none was included in the kit! Fortunately I had some of my own handy.) I then taped the wires down to the sheet metal using 2 inch wide duck tape and routed the wiring out through the rubber grommet at the rear-most part of the spare tire well. I think this yields a much more finished and professional installation than just leaving the wiring rolled up in the spare tire area and dangling it out the rear hatch when you want to use it. There is - in my opinion - just shy of enough wire length to get the control module into the spare tire compartment, so I had to trim a little bit of the foam off the bottom front corner of the foam tray that sits above the spare tire. No biggie; just something worth mentioning. All in all the harness installation was easy once I figured out where the darn thing was hidden and how to get the pigtail out.

Works great! Plugs right into my 2018 Subaru Forester. I bought this so I could rent a Uhaul trailer. This cable reached my hitch comfortably but I did need a cable extension for that trailer, Uhaul has their trailer's plug about a foot away from hitch coupler.

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Works perfectly on my 2017 Outback - as advertised. Easy to stow in the wheel-well storage tray. For installation, I found it easier to reach the Outback's plug-in by removing the front, left tie-down hook, and then pushing the plug down below the fabric, vs reaching up under the fabric. After that, installation was extremely simple. Good product, good service.

Subaru

This is the 2nd time I've bought a wiring kit from etrailer that was "Plug & Play". The stock Subaru trailer connector was right where they showed to be in the video & was easy to get to. I don't care for the idea of running it over the tailgate & body seal so I chose to run it through a conveniently placed rubbed plug in the spare tire well. The tire is held up off the harness by the hard insulation in the tire well bottom. A little silicone sealant around the harness where I snipped the plug to keep the water out & we're done!

Comments
It looks like you didnt put the converter box under the wheel well cover like the installation instructions suggest. Did you cut out some foam from the compartment tray to fit around it on the floor? Thanks, I like the idea of going the through the plug in the floor and putting the wire directly outside.

Hi Dennis,Yes, I simply cut out a little bit of the foam panel. I wanted to keep the convertor box easily accessible. On the off chance it were to fail in the future it would keep it easy to test

The instructional video was great in locating the Subaru's wiring harness plug without having to tear half the car apart to find it. Everything went together without having to make any modifications. The only thing I did different is that they show laying the pigtail out the floor to the outside and closing the tailgate on top of it. That's fine but I wanted something cleaner so I took out the spare tire and popped out a rubber plug close to the hitch and ran the harness through the hole and then rearward to the hitch. And the wiring harness was still long enough to run it in this direction. I fabricated a new rubber plug with a hole in it to seal where the wire goes through the hole. When the season is over and i'm not trailoring for a while, I pull the wire harness back through that hole and put the original plug back in the hole and just store the harness inside with the spare tire.

Good product. I set a 2x6 that was slightly wider than the hitch plates, centered the 2x6 on a floor jack, pushed it under the vehicle and pumped it up into position, put the wires through the hitch holes to keep bolts from being pushed up into frame of vehicle, lined it up so bolts went through hitch holes, removed wires and installed nuts to hold hitch while I finished the installation.

2019 Subaru XV Crosstrek

This is the second time that I have purchased and installed a hitch that I purchased from ETrailer.com. The hitch and wiring harness and hitch cover arrived in a very timely manner and were just as I expected them to be. The videos provided in the follow-up email saved me the time to re-look them up on the website. Installation of the wiring harness took about 10 minutes. Installation of the hitch took about an hour. I had access to a lift at my brother's house which made the job quite simple. I modified what the video's said to do about hanging and lowering the muffler with a strap. Instead I removed the muffler which required removing 2 nuts and bolts on the muffler flange and only removing the three rubber hangers on the muffler. This gave much more working room to tighten up the four mounting bolts. Re-installation of the muffler was simple. My only suggestion for product improvement would be to provide slightly longer mounting bolts, perhaps 1/4 to 1/2 inch longer. This would make getting the two forward bolts easier to get the nuts started on. Now I have a 2019 Crosstrek with this E-Trailer Hitch made by Curt and a 2018 Crosstrek with a Drawtite Hitch that I bought from E-Trailer a couple of years ago. The older hitch has worked well for my needs and I anticipate that the newer one will work out just as well. I do like the cleaner look of the newer hitch where only the receiver is visible externally instead of a visible cross tube and the receiver.

2022 Subaru Outback Wagon

Compared to a wiring harness I bought from etrailer.com, in 2005, this one seems slightly substandard. The main disappointment is the lack of indicator lights on the dust cover (which my old one has), leading one to go to another online retailer to buy their $x dust cover with test lights. The other real concern is the shortness in length. It could stand to be about 12 inches longer (for a 2022 Subaru Outback). Other than those two points, it seems okay. I won't know for sure until I get the dust cover with test lights. On the positive side: It's absolutely great that it simply plugs into my Subaru's plug (Just raise the floor and plug it in...five minutes from opening the rear door to being finished.).

by:

Unfortunately the etrailer video outlining the installation of this harness omits the necessary step of removing another cover to expose the connector for the harness. Otherwise the video was helpful and its installation quite simple and straightforward.

Well for starters I was skeptical about how easy the installation and wiring would be according to the videos provided by etrailer . Contrary to my belief , this was an easy installation with proper instructions according to the paper manual. Also the wiring connectors location and plug in were accurate Thank you etrailer ( George & Carol ) Best regards Fidel

This is the second or third hitch I have ordered from etrailer. The selection is excellent & the delivery is amazingly fast. This hitch is for a 2022 Subaru Outback. I have found these hitches to be superior to the Subaru factory hitch.

Your video on how to install hitch and wiring was so simple to follow and easy to understand that I did not even need the instruction sheets. This video convinced me to do it myself and save money allot of money! The only problem while installing hitch I had was in enlarging the holes in my car. This was because of the material this section was made of , aluminum. or something of the kind, very soft. A die grinder would have made short work of this task. This part took the most time, about 30 min. the rest of the job was complete in another 15 min. I am speaking about the hitch, wiring took another 30 min., you will see why when you view my pictures. The wiring harness connectors fit into my cars harness like it was manufactured a the plant which built my car. The car dealer where I bought the car tried to sell me on them installing hitch and wiring because they claimed your products would need a lot of retrofitting. This was not the case at all. Everything you supplied fit perfect without any necessary modifications, however I did make a modification to the wiring harness to fit my own needs. I did not like the idea of sticking it out the trunk, so I went to local parts store and picked up a special bracket and connector to install onto the trailer hitch, thus having connector outside car as it should be. If I did not make this mod it would have only taken 10 min. to install. You can see this connector mod in the picture I am sending you. I have recommended this site to many other people in my fishing club and at work. My brother-in law has just ordered one for his car, seeing how easy my in-stallion was. With your help and a desire to save allot of money anyone can install a hitch, even if you never did one before. The two wire feeders for the bolts worked great, I never saw this technique before. Without them the job would have been tough to say the least. As you mentioned, it is wise to have another person help when it comes time to lift the hitch into position. My brother in -law helped me, now he is buying a hitch and I shall help him lift it into position. Maybe if I was not 63 I could have done the job myself.

2018 Subaru Outback Wagon

The Tekonsha wiring harness arrived without delay and was exactly as expected. Installation on my 2018 Subaru Outback went smoothly thanks to the excellent instructions and video that e-Trailer.com provides. The feedback and reviews of other customer are also very helpful. I reviewed the instruction video several times and read some of the reviews. I had absolutely no issue to install it in a few minutes. It is a little tricky getting my big fingers behind the panel to pull the connector down that is taped up with blue tape. Once you have that down, the rest is a piece of cake. I would also like to comment that I also installed the DrawTite 2" Receiver hitch. This installation went quite well, although I must say that the e-Trailer video, and instructions supplied with the hitch are not as good as the explanations of some of the reviewers. For example, it is much easier to pass the bolts and spacers from the top (inside the truck area) by enlarging the existing holes in the cargo area floor, rather than drilling a new hole in the bottom of the frame as per the instructions. I also discovered that it is possible to do this by only enlarging the two forward holes in the cargo floor, rather than all four. It is very easy to fish the rear bolts from the front hole if you pass the fish wire in from the bottom rear hole in the frame. Another trick from other reviewers that was very helpful is to mark the heat shield with a Sharpie from inside before you remove it and then drill it rather than trim it with metal shears. It gives a much nicer looking job. Finally, I discovered a trick that really helps to align the hitch when bolting it up. Take four of the M6 bolts that were removed from the heat shields and put them into their holes through the hitch. Once this is done, the hitch is perfectly aligned and you can tighten and torque the four large nuts holding the hitch in place. If you do this, your heat shield will bolt up easily without any issue of the bolts not aligning with the holes. Actually, there was one issue that is not mentioned in any of the reviews that I read, and it would be really nice if DrawTite could fix. This is that fact that the 2 forward original M6 bolts for the heat shields next to the frame that must pass through the hitch flange are too short with the spacer washer placed as per the instructions. The installation kit should include replacement bolts that are about 1/2 inch longer so that they can pass through the hitch flange and the spacer. Unfortunately, the original bolts are too short and stripped when trying to install because they were only holding with a few treads. Now I have to go an buy some longer bolts and repeat the process of lowering the mufflers and exhaust pipe to install them. It would have been nice to know before as I could have easily purchased them in advance. I am very satisfied with e-Trailer.com and their excellent website and service. It certainly is my first stop when looking for anything related to trailers.

  • How to Install 7-Way Connector on 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon
We have exactly what you need to install a 7-Way connector on your new 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon so you can connect with the 7-Way on your trailer. You will need to start with a 4-Way harness and for this the Tekonsha T-One # 118467 will work perfectly. Since your 2021 Subaru Outback Wagon does not have factory trailer wiring you'd need to first install a 4-way with part # 118467 and then convert it to a 7-way with a 7-way adapter like the part # 37185 to give you the 7-way. But since you are wanting to have the 12 volt circuit active your best solution is the adapter # ETBC7L instead of the 37185 as it comes with the wiring needed to complete that circuit. For your 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon I highly recommend the Tekonsha T-One Wiring Harness # 118467. This custom harness will plug right into an existing port in the vehicle's rear cargo area, either behind the driver's side trim panel or in the spare tire compartment. This is a simple "plug-and-play" install and the Tekonsha converter boxes tend to hold up much better over time than those from other manufacturers. This will provide you with a 4-Way connector to power the trailer's basic...

  • Finding Trailer Wiring Install Connector for 2020 Subaru Outback for Tekonsha Trailer Wiring
Sounds like you did find it. We've heard the trailer wiring harness the 2020 Subaru Outback has for installing the # 118467 can be buried a bit and that you have to reach pretty far back to get it so based on what you described you have found it. I attached an install video link to this page that shows how we found it on a similar 2019 Outback. Here's text from a review we got from a customer detailing their experience finding the harness as well: "The only problem I had was in "finding"...

  • Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness for 2019 Subaru Crosstrek
For your 2019 Subaru Crosstrek I highly recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118467, which will plug right into the factory port that's either located behind the driver's-side trim panel or in the spare tire compartment in the rear cargo area. I like the Tekonsha harnesses because they use a superior converter box that's known for its durability and long lifespan. This will provide you with a fully-functional 4-Way connector to power the basic signal lights on your...

  • Comparing Curt, T-One, and Hopkins Trailer Wiring Kits for 2018 Subaru Forester
We have three trailer wiring options for your 2018 Subaru Forester. We have the Curt option # C56040, the T-One option (my favorite) # 118467, and the Hopkins # HM11143865. The reason I favor and recommend the T-One kit part # 118467 is because the converter boxes on the T-One kits have been proven to us as being the most reliable. Trailer wiring shorts will easily damage the converter boxes of these kits which renders them totally inoperable but we have found that the T-One converter...

  • Plug and Play Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2013 Subaru Outback 2.5 Premium
It sounds like the shop installed a hardwire harness with a powered converter that would require a direct connection to the vehicle battery. Harness # 118467 does not require a connection to the battery because the power wire is part of the factory wiring this harness plugs into. The wire you are talking about under the car should have been secured with loom clamps, or even zip ties. Perhaps this shop needs to take a look at the FAQ article I wrote which I have linked to the right on...

  • Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness for 2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i
The T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118467 is the one I recommend over the other two for your 2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i. This brand of harness has less issues than the others. The Hopkins # HM11143885 and the Curt harness # C56040 are very similar as you stated and all three will work well. It is the same product made by 3 different manufacturers. I personally would get the Tekonsha based on the reputation of reliability and customer feedback.

  • Installing a 7-Way Trailer Connector on a 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon
That is correct for your 2017 Subaru Outback we only carry 4-way trailer connectors that are a direct fit. However, once you install the 4-way it can be converted to a 7-way, if that's what your trailer needs. Of the 4-way connectors for your Outback I recommend the Tekonsha # 118467 because we always have great success with them. To install the harness you'll need to locate the factory connector in the Subaru's rear cargo area. Then install the included fuse. I've linked an install...

  • Installing a 7-way Trailer Connector on a 2018 Subaru Outback
We do have what you need to add a 7-way trailer connector to your 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon but there isn't a specific custom harness that fits. If right now the Outback has no trailer wiring at all the easiest way to add a 7-way is to start with a plug and play 4-way and then convert it. I recommend using the Tekonsha, part # 118467, for the 4-way. It plugs in to a connector that's either behind a trim panel in the rear cargo area on the driver's side or in the spare tire compartment....

  • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon
In terms of keeping trailer wiring protected there is no better way to accomplish this than how the Tekonsha wiring harness part # 118467 is designed to be used. The 4-way is stored on the interior when not in use which protects it from road debris and developing corrosion from weather and then when needed pulls out of the hatch and the door is shut on it. The thick rubber door seal protects the wiring.

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon That Doesnt Require Running Wire to Battery
For your 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon XT the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118467 will work perfectly. This custom harness is going to plug right into existing ports in the rear cargo area and you will not have to run a separate hot lead to the battery. This will get power from the tail light circuits on the vehicle so it's a simple plug-and-play install without any additional connections or wiring. I have attached an installation video on the 2019 model Outback Wagon that you...

  • Recommended Trailer Brake Controller and Wiring for 2018 Subaru Outback
You can absolutely install a trailer brake controller on your 2018 Subaru Outback. Starting with the brake controller itself, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is an excellent, proportional controller that will activate the trailer's brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your Outback. It features an easy to read digital display and continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues. This unit is well known...

To activate the additional circuits in the 7-way new wired connections need to be made to support those additional functions.
