  • This fifth-wheel trailer hitch is not compatible with Sidewinder or Revolution king pins. Do not use any device that changes the pivot point of your trailer's king pin with this hitch.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Installation of the B&W Companion OEM Slider

To install the Companion OEM, first set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance.

To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

B&W Companion OEM Ram Feet

Then, when the hitch head is fully assembled, simply place the hitch in the bed of your truck, lining the base up with the receiver sockets in the bed. Rotate all 4 handles on the hitch base out so that the built-in puck receivers are in the correct position to install in the sockets. Once the base is lined up, fold the handles in until they are in the locked position and secure them with the included pins.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Does not fit 2022 Ford F-250 OEM fifth wheel package. Feet of the base are a fraction of an inch too close together, striking the OEM pucks. Will not seat completely. One side may seat, the other side still sits on the edge of the puck.

Comments
I am sorry to hear that the 5th wheel is not sitting into the pucks properly. It does should like that the feet may have been knocked out of alignment during shipping which can happen. I will have Customer Service reach out to you so that we can assist you.

Thanks to Etrailer for the fast shipping of the B&W Companion slider hitch. Installation was a breeze. I simply unboxed the hitch, placed it in the bed of my truck, opened the lock levers, set it over my factory installed pick system, closed the locking levers, inserted the pins, and the base was fastened in place securely. Finished by installing the pivot arm risers with four bolts each, applied a thin layer of grease to the bushings for a smoother pivot action, set the double jaw locking King pin head over the pivot, inserted the lock pins and finished. Less than 30 minutes to complete the install. Absolutely love how it works towing my new 5th wheel camper.

My wife and I have been researching options for towing our fifth wheel trailer for the past couple of months and since we had just purchased a Ford F250 short bed pickup, we decided on the B&W Companion Slider hitch based on the majority of positive reviews.
We received the slider hitch on a pallet last Friday, and it arrived in great condition and arrived much sooner than I expected! Thanks for the expeditious shipping. I decided to wait until Saturday to install as I had just installed a bedrug in the F250 we had purchased last week. (This F250 has the 5th wheel prep package installed which also aided in our decision on the Companion slider.) I had read that the Companion 5th Wheel Hitch could be installed with the bedrug installed, so I measured and cut out around the OEM Pucks in the bed. The pallet weighed about 330 lbs according to the Bill of Lading. It came in two boxes, the smaller one contained the head, and the large box had the slider assembly. I used a portable engine hoist and two slings to lift the slider assembly up onto the bed of the F250 and put cardboard under the legs to slide on the bedrug. Got it lined up and it sat in the pucks no problem. Only one of the locking handles closed on the first try. I had watched most of the install videos on the etrailer site and this made the install much easier. One thing I would recommend is to remove the covers on the sides covering the castle nuts. This makes adjusting them much easier and it only takes removing the two bolts holding the covers on. It took less than 10 minutes to get the other three castle nuts adjusted and get tension on the locking handles. From there I installed the two coupler pivot arms according to the instructions (at the highest setting) and torqued the bolts to the required 110 ft/lbs. Applied the white lithium grease to the bushings and set the head in place. Followed the rest of the install video instructions and did a test hookup to my fifth wheel trailer. Everything worked as described, and I was very pleased. Took the trailer out the next day for a test run of just over 120 miles and had no issues at all!
A fantastic purchase and very easy installation! I have enclosed some photos showing the Companion slider in the bed over the bedrug and also showing that the tonneau cover (Retrax Pro MX) has enough clearance to operate properly with no interference from the fifth wheel. This was another outstanding purchase through etrailer.com. Keep up the great work!

This is a great hitch. 2022 was the first RV trips for my wife and I and the hitch worked perfectly. It was easy to install and provides a smooth and secure ride. The slider is easy to move and provides that extra sense of security when in tight spots. I would highly recommend this hitch to anyone with a short bed truck.

I have used the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w Slider in my Ford F350 short bed about 5 times since purchasing it and it works as advertised. So far very nice product.

by:

Didn’t need the slider and it would not work with a sidewinder pin box on a short box F350. Purchased a standard B & W hitch for puck system and it’s great. etrailer telephone reps and B&W reps were knowledgeable and helpful. Have the new slider for sale if anyone is interested in purchase. Thankya……

Hitch is great regarding use to pull my 5th wheel RV, easy assembly/follow directions. Only issue was delivery to my home, seems lift gate was not specified by ETrailer, I contacted ET employees would have taken additional 4 days for me to recieve, so I personally went pick it up from UPS warehouse 2bhrs from my home

Comments
Very well, the slide allows cab clearance when turning radius is needed, no damage to truck. Easy to remove kingpin attachment for inout of truck along with lubrication. Puck system is working well, minor adjustments upon initial installation

Other than the delivery being days late and we had to go pick it up at the warehouse due to delivery being 5 days later. We are very pleased with the product. When in easy and worked perfectly when we pulled our fifth wheel:) TY

The best 5th wheel hitch I have ever owned! Easy to hitch and unhitch.

An awesome hitch and because the truck was preset up for a hitch it slipped right in

2022 Ford F-350 Super Duty

The hitch looks amazing, I just received it, as the shipping company dropped the ball 4 times. I have not installed it yet. E-trailer did a great job getting it out their door. The freight company is another thing

by:

A fantastic hitch. Positive locking jaws and very heavy duty parts. I’m grossing over 30K and this hitch handles it solidly. The slider is very handy in tight spots. I have the pin arms in the 3” forward position and my 21k Grand Design Momentum 381m rides very well. Highly recommended! etrailer is fast and knowledgeable in all their parts.

by:

etrailer did not coordinate well with the shipping/delivery team…that required a lift gate to deliver the hitch. This put me working between the company and the shipper delaying delivery several times. Not ideal or satisfactory.

by:

After selling my old truck with my old sliding hitch, I needed a new hitch for my new truck. I did a lot of research and talked to buddies with hitches and decided on B&W from etrailer. There were installation videos and instructions on line and when the hitch arrived I was ready. The fact that the head removes made it a little easier for me to install myself, but I still needed a hoist to get it into the bed. Setting the height made me nervous, but it worked great. I’ve used it a dozen times and it is by far the easiest hitch I’ve ever used. Moving back and forth to maneuver and travel positions takes less than a minute and is easy to do solo. I recommend B&W and etrailer to all my RVing friends and family.

Comments
After a year and many more uses, I’m just as happy with my hitch as before. I keep it clean and lubed and even bought a cover for it in the rare case when my sliding metal cover for the bed is open. I’ve taken the hitch out and reinstalled it about 10 times and it goes in as easy as day one. Still highly recommend!

I purchased a camper that required a 5th wheel connection be installed on my F-250. I called etrailer for help. Overall I talked with 3 different people. All were very helpful and accommodating and helped me select the hitch I needed for the weight of the camper and my truck. Unfortunately the Ford dealer told me my truck was already set up for the hitch, which I passed on to etrailer. But, when I got the hitch I realized that was not the case. I contacted etrailer to let them know the problem. A lady named Donna was very helpful and gave me what I needed to return the hitch, which you should have by now. I found a company nearby who installs 5th wheel hitches so they ordered what we needed from etrailer and it is being installed today. I have two friends who are needing hitches too and have forwarded them etrailer contact information. Everyone I talked to at etrailer was very nice, customer friendly and helpful. Great company, great people and I would recommend them to anyone.

2022 Ford F-350 Super Duty

Took 3 weeks to receive and was missing parts of the hitch. I contacted B&W company and they are sending me the missing parts to my hitch. Not very pleased.

by:

Installation was super easy. I had the delivery truck drop the packages directly into the bed of my 2019 F250 to avoid picking them up from the ground. One improvement opportunity, the release levers for the bed pins is too small for 1.5" #9 hardened shank padlocks and needs to be drilled out slightly larger. B&W should do this at the factory. Lubricating the pins allows for easier installation also. Otherwise, I'm happy with my purchase. B&W is the only hitches I trust.

by:

Hands down the best hitch I have owned!!

B & W Works Great. Wish I'd purchased this B & W from you in 2017 lieu of the Reese Elite RE-18 purchased from you back then. The Reese is garbage. Always had problems with the "slider" aspect of that Hitch.

by:

I have been using B&W hitches for quite awhile now and I love the quality of these great hitches. This is about the second time using etrailer and the experience has been great as well. From the time I ordered my hitch until delivery of about 3 weeks e trailer was right there, answering my questions or keeping me in the loop as to shipping and delivery.
Overall it has been a great experience and I wouldn’t hesitate to use e trailer again!
Thank you for the experience!

Very happy with my new 5th Wheel Hitch. I arranged through the delivery company for me to pick it up. They loaded it into the back of my pick up. Never had to unload it to do the easy install.

by:

This hitch is super easy to hook up, slide, and is secure. I love it.

by:

Picked up our new 5th wheel last December in Michigan and brought it back to California thru winter weather and even high winds around the tornados that hit the St. Louis area. The B&W hitch always gave me the assurance to not have to worry about the hitch connection. Even through the bumpy New Mexico stretches of I-40, I-25, and I-10 the hitch never gave me a worry. A solid hitch that gives an assuring performance.

2022 Ford F-350 Super Duty

Highly disappointed with etrailer. I ordered a B&W fifth wheel hitch because they said in stock on 3/29 and I would have it by 4/8 Friday. It never shipped until 4/8 so I have to wait until the following weekend to get my new camper. Now it's 4/13 and the shipping company calls to make an appointment for delivery because now it's scheduled for delivery today. They ask if I have anyway to get it off the truck. I said no, well we're gonna have to scheduled a lift gate so one won't be in your area until Monday 4/18. Just great another weekend I can't get my camper. I can't wait to see the debacle come Monday if they say they won't back in my driveway. Never again etrailer. I have to ordered a second hitch and I know it won't be here. As far as the B&W I can't review it yet.

by:

great hitch, easy install. Just wish all the parts came in the boxes and when I was told it was going to be here. They did eventually make it right but took another month. Sick and tired of hearing covid as an excuse.

  • How to Determine if Truck is Too Tall to Tow 5th Wheel Trailer
While it's possible that a truck can simply be too tall to tow a fifth-wheel trailer level, it's difficult to determine this with only the truck bed height, as the height of the particular trailer you are wanting to tow will also affect this. Also keep in mind that most fifth-wheel hitches, along with the pin box on a trailer, can be adjusted to different heights to help with trucks and trailers that don't get along height-wise. In order to see if your truck is too tall, I recommend taking...

The B&W Patriot Slider 5th Wheel Hitch won't work with any of the factory prep packages because the adapters needed for this are not compatible with this hitch. The only option would be a new fifth wheel hitch. I recommend sticking with B&W and using the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # BWRVK3370 which is a direct drop-in option.
