Video Transcript for Fifth Wheel Installation - 2011 Ram 3500

All right today on this 2011 Dodge Ram pickup 3500 Series Crew Cab we're going to install part number C16420-104. To start off our install we need to remove the tires and wheels and also the fender well liners to get access to the frame. We'll do this on both sides of the truck. Then we'll get underneath the truck and we need to loosen the wire harness on the drivers side. We'll go ahead and work the harness loose and just get it loosened up for work later. Now we'll go to the spare tire area and remove the heat shield.

Need to lower that out of the way as well to have access to the frame. Now we'll go ahead and put the rear mounting rail into the bed of the truck. Then we'll go ahead and measure from the edge of the bed forward to the cab of the truck using the measurements provided with the instructions. Now this will be different between 8 foot and 6 foot beds. Once we have the right distance marked off in the bed then we'll go ahead and put a rail up to it.

Then we'll make sure it's even on both sides from left to right. All right with the bed rail in place we'll go ahead and hold it and then mark and drill for our holes. We'll use a 1/2 inch drill bit to mark through our holes that we need to drill. Once we have them marked we'll go back at it with a 1/8th inch drill bit. Now for row number two we'll go ahead and drill all the way through and drill 1/8th inch holes.

We'll do this on both sides. The drill bit or piece of wire going through the bed we'll go ahead and look from the side to see where it goes through the bed support. Then we'll double check it with the frame bracket. We'll put the frame bracket in place, hold it up, align it with the hole at the bottom of the frame then we'll go ahead and check the slot that goes underneath the bed support. Now we notice our drill bit is off to one side.

This actually matches the slot on the frame bracket as it goes to one side of the hatchannel. In this case it goes towards the back. With our pivot holes drilled out for our back rail we'll go ahead and take our front rail and put it into place. We'll go ahead and use the hitch to help hold it in place. We'll go ahead and put it all together. We want to make sure our back rail is centered still and then we'll go ahead and adjust our front rail. We'll make sure that it's even from left to right. Then we'll go ahead and mark and drill our holes. Now for rows three and four we'll be using this second hole in. One thing we're going to do is use an extended length drill bit, a 1/4 inch size on the back rail. We'll use that to drill all the way through to the hat channel on the bottom. Then we'll continue on drilling our holes to a final hole size, which will be 9/16th. All right at this point we an go ahead and start installing the frame brackets. Starting on the frame bracket on the drivers side for the rear rail we'll go ahead and putit into place. We'll line up our holes and then install our U bolt. We'll push the U bolt from the outside to the inside then install a conical tooth washer and nut. Now when we install a conical tooth washer you want to make the teeth always face towards the hitch. Now there's a piece of hardware we need to run through the bottom of the bracket through the bottom of the frame. Then using a bolt leader we'll go ahead and run through the hole we're going to use and out an access hole at the bottom of the frame. In this case our block was just a little bit too wide to fit in so we actually use the rotary tool and the grinding bit to grind down just enough to get inside the frame. Oncewe have just enough room to put our spacer in we'll go ahead and run our bolt leader through and then through our spacer and then our bolt and then pull the entire assembly through back through the hole, through the frame and the frame bracket. Then we'll install another conical tooth washer and nut. Now we also want to leave all our hardware loose for now. Next we need to install a tube spacer. This goes inside the hat channel and the bed. We'll take a piece of wire run it from the inside of the bed and out to the hole on the side of the bed underneath the fender. We'll take our wire and thread it through our tube spacer, then put a hook on the end. Then we'll gently put it inside the frame and then pull our wire to pull it back into place. Now our wire won't be strong to pull it vertical so we'll get it close enough where we can get at it with a screwdriver or something else that we can use to pry with. Then we'll go ahead and pull in position and then line it with the hole that we drilled out earlier through the bottom of the hat channel. With that our brackets installed. We'llgo ahead and repeat the same process over on the passenger side. All right, now we'll move on to our front bracket. We'll go ahead and put it in place from the outside. Now we need to loosen up the hanger for the parking brake able and also remove a nut for the ground. We'll go ahead and loosen up the nut for our ground as well as the bolt for the bracket for the parking brake. Then we'll put our bracket into place. We'll seat our bracket right next to the ground and then work it behind thehanger for the parking brake cable. Then we'll go ahead and loosely reinstall the bolt for the bracket for the parking brake as well as a nut for our ground. Then on the other side we'll go ahead and install the U bolt. Working from the inside out we'll have to work our U bolt underneath the wire harness as well as the brake line. Now to give us some room at the wire harness we'll go ahead and loosen it up some more. We'll also take our bracket that goes to the brake line and we'll go ahead and gently pull it out to give us a little more working room. Then we'll slip our U bolt into place. Then we'll install a conical tooth washer and nut. We're done with the drivers side, let's go ahead and repeat the same process over on the passenger side. At this point we can go ahead and reinstall the rails over our holes. Now the back rail will just lay right in place on top of the holes. Now our forward rail we'll need a couple of spacers because where the bolts go through there's a gap between the floor and the rail. Then we'll go ahead and isntall our bolts going from the top down. Now starting with our rear rail we're going to usetwo different bolts. The bolts closest to the tailgate we'll use a short carriage bolts. Bolts for the second row we'll use the longer carriage bolts. We'll go through the space, out the bottom of the hat channel, and thenthrough the bracket. We'll do this on both sides of the truck. Then we'll go ahead and install our hardware underneath. At the bottom of the back rail we install a spacer that goes between the frame bracket and the bed. Then we'll install a conical tooth washer and nut. Now our fastener that goes through the hat channel at the bottom will also get a conical tooth washer and nut. Now going to our front bracket on the drivers side we'll install a conical tooth washer and nut. Now the bolt that's on the other side of the hat channel gets a special block. We'll go ahead and put it into place and then install a lock washer and then a nut. We're done with the drivers side. We'll go ahead and repeat the same process over on the passengers side. After the base rails are hand tight to the frame brackets it's a good idea to go ahead and test thehitch to make sure we can move it in and out. Now at this point you may want to adjust the rails to make it a little easier or a little bit tighter. We have a little bit tighter the less rattling you'll have. We'll go ahead and tighten down the bolts for the base rails to the frame brackets. Then we'll go ahead and torque down the bolts. After that's done we'll go ahead and tighten down the bolts and torque them down to spec from the frame brackets going to the frame. Now at this point we're almost done. We got two more bolts that we need to install. I like to save these for last to keep the base rails from pivoting on the center bolt while you're adjusting it. This will help lock it down in position. We'll go ahead and drill those two out and install ourhardware. We'll install a carriage bolt through the base rail and then through a spacer and then through the bed. Underneath we'll get special block, lock washer and nut. Now at this point we can go ahead and reinstall the spare tire shield, the interiors to the fender wells, and then the tires and wheels and then the spare tire. Then we can also go ahead and tighten down our ground strap that goes to the frame on the drivers side as well as tighten down our bracket for the parking brake cable. That'llfinish it for part number C16420-104, on our 2011 Dodge Ram pickup 3500 Series Crew Cab. .

Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for Dodge Ram - Gloss Finish - C16420-104

by:

I wish they had a rating lower than poor. Product installation instructions are extremely poor. Kit is so universal it doesn't fit anything. The 90 minute installation time is just what it takes to read and try to figure out the poor instructions. Curt needs to have they documentation department actually do an installation based on their own instructions to find out just how bad they really are. I now know why the installation performed on my other truck looks so bad. I thought it was they installers, but it is actually the fault of the kit and the included materials. An engineer and toolmaker for 42 years proved to be my only saving grace. It is lucky for me I have a machine shop in my garage to make the parts that were needed to complete the installation. I would not recommend this kit to anyone, pro or novice. The only part of the instruction that was correct was when they tell you to drop the spare tire for better access. A major pain to install and to make safe. This issue is more with Curt and not with E-trailer.

Thank you for the additional info. I will be sure to pass it along to the manufacturer to see if they need to evaluate their instructions.

Excellent product. I had to enlarge a frame hole in order to get the necessary pieces in. A long screwdriver and a strong punch helped get the tube spacers in place. It took me longer than 90 minutes to install, but it was not a problem. I would buy the exact same thing again. Ordered late Wed. night and I had it on Monday. Great product, great service.

  • Can Curt Brackets be Used with Husky Rails and an RBW 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch on a 2012 Dodge Ram
I cannot recommend mixing brackets and rails from different manufacturers because there is no way to determine the actual compatibility or capacity. I recommend going with a complete bracket and rail kit. That way you will know for sure that everything is compatible and you will have all new parts. We do know that the RBW Lil Rocker will fit in Reese and Curt rails but cannot confirm the fit of any other RBW hitch. You will need to go by the mounting requirements of the hitch and compare...

  • Comparing Tow Rating of Towing Vehicle to GVWR of the Trailer Being Towed
From a capacity point of view the truck and hitch only need to be rated high enough for the weight of the trailer when it is loaded and ready to tow. This is always going to be higher than the dry weight of the trailer because it is empty. If the gross trailer weight and tongue weight when loaded and ready to tow are below the capacity of the truck and hitch then you are safe. There is also something called gross combined weight rating. This is the most that both the truck and trailer...
