Hopkins Flat Tow Wiring Harness - HM56108

  • Wiring Harness
  • Plugs into Vehicle Wiring
  • Tail Light Mount
  • Hopkins
  • Custom

Plug-and-play custom harness gets turn and brake signals on your towed car with no hardwiring or splicing, and no effect on your warranty. The built-in diodes protect your car from electrical feedback.

Features:

  • Allows your RV's tail, brake, and turn signals to display on your car's tail lights
  • Plugs right into car's connection points - no cutting or splicing
    • Custom designed for your vehicle
    • No effect on your warranty
  • Prevents feedback that can damage your vehicle's electrical components with diodes
  • Provides 4-way flat plug at front of towed car
    • Requires additional harness to connect to motorhome - sold separately
  • Includes wiring harness, mounting bracket, and installation hardware
  • 90-Day warranty

Notes:

  • A brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if used with a flat tow brake system. (See below.)
  • A wiring converter (118158 - sold separately) and 2 additional diodes will be needed to retain separate turn and brake signals. (See below.)

Combined Lighting System vs Separate Lighting System

Combined vs Seperate Lighting System

A combined lighting system, or 2-wire system, uses the same light bulb to signal both braking and turning. (In other words, the car signals a turn by flashing the brake light.)

A separate lighting system, or 3-wire system, has the brake signal and the turn signal light up independently of each other. Typically, the turn signal is amber.

To keep the separate lighting system on your car functioning properly while you're flat towing, add a wiring converter (118158 - sold separately) and 2 additional diodes.

Do I Need a Brake Light Relay?

If the engine is off and your car's brake lights illuminate when you press the brake pedal, you need to install a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) with this kit. Without a relay, your car's brake signal will override the turn signal sent by the RV when you are slowing down to make a turn, creating a potentially dangerous situation. Other drivers will see that you're slowing down, but not that you're making a turn. With a brake light relay, you can signal both and travel safely.

Still working great. Haven’t had any issues. Highly recommend.

2015 GMC Terrain

Works great. Easy to install. So much better then having additional lights to carry around and install each time I tow. I just plug in the "Towed" like any other trailer, and it's all done. Would do it again if I got a new "towed."

I love both products. Getting the wire harness was such a good idea. Im happy you had it or I would be using magnetic lights and that would suck. The base plate and tow bar are perfect for towing our GMC. Unfortunately the Blue Ox cover was lost on a drive without the tow vehicle. I think they need to make the straps better to ensure they stay on during no tow driving. That is the only suggestion I have.

2015 Chevrolet Equinox

I installed a tow bar setup on my parents Chevy Equinox about a year ago so they could pull it behind their motor home. With that I installed this wiring harness for the towing lights. I have to say the installation went very well and did not require a masters degree to do it. Some simple tools a little planning and a couple hours of your time and you can have this installed and working. It made the hook up a lot easier for my father because it is one plug just like plugging in a trailer. The quality is vary high and so far it has been completely trouble free. It also does not interfere with the proper operation of the lights in the car. If your going to tow a car behind your motor home I highly recommend this harness. This review setup offers a place to add pictures but the harness installs so nice that you can not see it to take a picture of it. So just imagine the wire comfortably installed along with the original wires in your car. Also along with all the other good stuff I mentioned they also have a video you can watch that will show you exactly what to do. What more could you ask for. Worth every penny.

2017 Chevrolet Equinox

Have had the product installed on my 2017 Chevrolet Equinox LT for one year and it has performed flawlessly! Easy item to install with a great video from etrailer.com. It is a quality product that does not have to cut into the OEM wiring harness. It just plugs into the existing connectors. I recommend this wiring harness to connect my RV to my Equinox for dinghy towing.

by:

This wiring kit is the way to do it right. I was using a magnetic light set which is OK, but the is so much better. The connections are custom designed for your vehicle with factory style plugs. No tow light wires draped over your vehicle since you run the wire along the frame to the front of the towed car. I should have bought this when I bought the tow bar.

by:

Ordered and install base plate over a year ago and finally got to use it a couple of weeks ago because motorhome was in shop waiting on parts. Pandemic and supply chain issues. Anyway, the base plate and accessories work great. Dinghy tracks well. Hardly know it’s back there.

by:
Chevrolet Equinox

I purchased both wiring and base plate of tow bar of my Equinox and it fit beautiful. I then purchased a trailer hitch and was pleased by all.

by:
2017 GMC Terrain

This plug and play wiring kit is the only way to go. I've done the individual diode kit before and the small cost-saving is not worth the hassle. If a custom kit is available for my next vehicle, I will be sure to use one again. By the way, the etrailer video was a big help in the do it yourself installation process.

by:
2015 Chevrolet Equinox

The large library of 'how to' videos' that Etrailer offers are just super. They answer so many 'pre-purchase' questions. No other site seems to offer so much help. I was originally sent the wrong light kit by mistake. They had a replacement in the mail the same day I called. GREAT service.

by:

Excellent wiring harness. All connectors fit perfectly, and the utube videos helped me complete the wiring.

Easy install and still working good

e-trailer was very helpful and had all the items we needed to add to the Equinox so that we could tow with confidence. I had my local Chevy/GMC dealer's service center do the work and everything works great just like it should!

  • Base Plate Kit Recommendation for 2016 Chevy Equinox
For your 2016 Chevy Equinox we have the Roadmaster base plate kit part # RM-523184-4 which is a confirmed fit as long as you don't have adaptive cruise control or active air shutters. This would work well with the Sterling tow bar you have part # RM-576. For lighting you can use the diode kit, # RM-15267, and not have to worry about cutting into the taillight housing. This will splice into your taillight wiring to allow your tow vehicle to control the taillight assemblies of the towed...

I have listed each part below along with an explanation. I have also attached all of the installation instructions and linked installation videos when available. Tow Bar, Safety Chains, and Wiring...

Between the MX and EZ4 base plates for the 2011 Chevy Equinox, both have removable draw-bar arms that you can take out when not in use so either one would be virtually invisible with the arms out. I recommend going with the EZ4 base plates, # RM-523160-4, because they are compatible with more tow bars. Before going any further you will want to consult the vehicle owners manual to make sure your Equinox can be flat towed and if there are any special requirements or procedures you need to...
