Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

The last thing you want is for your horses to get jostled around while you're on the road. Driving over bumps, potholes, and uneven terrain causes road shock, which can result in a rough, uncomfortable ride for you and your ponies. It can even potentially damage your trailer. The Pegasus from Gen-Y Hitch is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth, and stable ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the coupler, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

pegasus torsion

Pivot points are built into this gooseneck coupler. This allows for movement between the base of the coupler, which connects to the ball in your truck bed, and the top tube of the coupler, which connects to your trailer. When your vehicle hits a bump, the base of the coupler will move up or down accordingly.

torsion

Built into the Pegasus are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler's base rises or falls, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the base's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

Offset Design Gives Extra Clearance When Towing

This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has an offset design. The bottom of the coupler, where it attaches to the ball, is positioned 11" away from the coupler tube, which inserts into the outer tube on your trailer. This provides 11" of extra clearance, giving you more space between your truck cab and trailer when making tight turns.

Easily Check Your Vertical Load

pegasus weight scale

The vertical load, or tongue weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.

This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has a built-in mechanical scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The highest arrow on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (3,500 lbs). The lowest arrow indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). A vertical load of at least 2,000 lbs is recommended for the built-in shock absorption to function effectively. This means that the scale's white indicator marker should be between the highest arrow and the middle arrow when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Video Transcript for Gen-Y Pegasus Shock Absorbing Gooseneck Coupler Review

What's up guys, I'm here with etrailer. Today, we're taking a look at the Gen-Y Pegasus Shock Absorbing Gooseneck Coupler. So, this is gonna be set apart from all the other ones that we have, just because we have some shock absorbing technology on the inside here. This is gonna make for a lot smoother ride. So, all the chucking that you feel whenever you're going down the road, basically, that's just when a lot of the surges go from your trailer into your truck and you feel it in the cab. It's not really something you'd like to feel, especially on those longer trips, but also with porpoising, basically what that is, is whenever you're kinda hitting bumps on the road, your nose end of your truck kinda starts going up and down.

It's not necessarily something that you want. And it's just gonna limit all that shock from transferring from your trailer to your truck. Basically, this is just gonna give you a lot smoother ride, and it's gonna be a lot easier on your trailer and all of your trucks components. So, I am gonna go over some of the nitty gritty details, but not yet. What I wanna do is just show you what this thing really does, really gonna see this thing kind of start to torsion out and start to flex and absorb a lot of that shock.

So, let's just show you because the footage is gonna do a justice. So we went ahead and took this thing through our test scores. And if you guys look right here, you'll see how it's really flexing. So, I wish you guys we're in the cab with me. I have driven a lot of different gooseneck and with airbags on the back, it's usually really, really rough.

But as that flex starts to happen, it really doesn't transfer a lot of that shock in there. It felt super buttery, whenever I was going over the speed bumps and we went over a lot of them. So it's kind of an extreme case here at etrailer with our test scores, but you can 100% feel it and you could see it too. So, let's take a look the component that really gives us that flex that you saw in the footage. So basically what's going on here and all of these different sections, we're gonna have a circular inner tube, and then, there's gonna be a square outer tube.

And then in between those, there's gonna be a cylinder shaped different pieces of rubber. And basically as the circular cylinder starts to kinda try to rotate, it starts to kinda push on that rubber. And that rubber is really what's giving us that shock absorbing feature for this specific type of coupler. So, that's really kind of how it works, but you can really to see it in the footage. And I can definitely feel it up there in the cap. And it's gonna give us about one and 1130 seconds inch of a travel. And right here is where we're gonna measure that travel. So, as of right now, we're, you know, we're just sitting right close to the max, but not enough. This is as heavy as the trailer's gonna get. So, if we did hop up to a larger one, it might bring us out of our range. So, we wanna make sure we're gonna be putting enough load on it, to where we can get that flex. Cause if we grab a 5.5K, it's probably gonna be really close to the minimum, if not in the breadth, which then we're not even gonna put it under enough load to really get the benefits from the coupler. We have three different options for the Pegasus and it's gonna be a 3.5k, we have it right here, a 4.5k and a 5.5K. While you guys are wondering how to figure out which one's best for you. Well, what we can do, is we can just take our gross trailer weight with all the stuff loaded in it. What we could do, is take 15 to 25% of that gross trailer weight. And that's gonna kinda give us a rough idea of what our pin weight is gonna be. Once you figure out the pin weight, basically just take that and times it by two, the pin weight is 2000, times by two, it's 4000. So, we should probably go with the 4.5 K. And the reason why we want to do that is we get the most out of our shock absorbing gooseneck coupler, when it's using 50% of that tongue weight. So, that's something kinda think about, if you get in that sweet spot, we're gonna reap the benefits fully to this whole entire setup. So, you saw it perform on our test scores and we told you how to find out which one's gonna be best for you. So what do you get Well, what we're gonna get is we are gonna get a pin. It does not come with the locking core. I highly recommend grabbing the locking core. And you can find that here in etrailer. And we are gonna have a tube, diameter of four inches. So just make sure that the inner diameter of your trailer, is gonna be able to accommodate for that four inch diameter tube. We are gonna have five different holes here, and they are kind of staggered side to side. Cause sometimes with some of these different setups that you may have on your trailer, they sometimes just have different positions and different holes. So, the staggered adjustment is gonna help with that. And from the center to center, we're gonna have a jump of about an inch and a half each. One thing I really like about this Pegasus is just the fact that we have a massive offset. So, about 11 inches from the center of your ball to the center of our tube here, so that's gonna give us a lot more turning radius. So, whenever we're turning, we have 11 extra inches, just so our big old trailer doesn't hit the cab of the truck. So if you have a fuel tank, maybe you have a toolbox in the back of your truck. Sometimes, you have to take into consideration whenever you're at a 90 degree turn, it's gonna pivot around. So, I'm gonna give you this measurement just to make sure that you have at least about four and a quarter of an inch from this point here to about here. Because this way, if you have plenty of room there, we're not gonna hit your toolbox or your fuel cell, something to kinda think about. And another thing that's kinda nice about this, it just looks awesome. I really liked this, powder-coated finish. I have seen these on a lot of trailers and they don't really rust away. It does a really good job of keeping it nice and pretty throughout its life. And then, one thing you do need to make sure you have, is a 2-5/16 inch ball. And if you don't have one, we have them here at etrailer. Well, we hooked this thing up earlier and basically all you got to do is line it up, drop it down and put the pin that's included with the kit, put that in there and you're good to go. This isn't a auto latch, but I honestly trust this a little bit more than the auto latches. That's just me. I put the pin in there and nothing is gonna happen to where it's gonna come out. And that's basically it. Honestly, in my opinion, if you we're gonna get a gooseneck coupler, grab one that shock absorbing is just gonna make the ride a lot better and might as well just get one that you're gonna get more benefit out of. And the Pegasus shock absorbing gooseneck coupler is gonna do that for you..

  • Will Gen-Y Pegasus Shock Absorbing Hitch Work With Tongue Weight Under 2,000 lbs
So the Gen-Y Pegasus Shock Absorbing Gooseneck Coupler # 325-GH-7006 will really only be effective if your trailer's tongue weight is between 2,000 lbs and 3,500 lbs.
